Tag Ribary (1:00 PM)
Hello everybody. Welcome to the Tuesday chat. Let's get started.
Isaiah: Dayton OH
Hey im the biggest Panthers fan in Ohio, I gotta know Ribary why Jake Delhomme why is Carolina so obsessed with keeping him he hasnt got a ring in what 7 years or more dont you think its time for a change. Also why wouldnt Vick be a candidate for the Panthers, yes he had some off field issues but hes surved his time and im possitive this guy is gonna be on his best behavior. Lol one more question when are the Panthers gonna give Steve Smith some real help on the other side of the field Muhammad is a good guy but after this year he will no doubt retire.
Tag Ribary (1:04 PM)
Hey Isaiah. I still think Jake can get the job done for Carolina and keeping him is their best option. It will be interesting to see where Michael Vick lands, but I don't see him as a Panther in their current system. I agree with you on Muhsin (the end is near) but he is still reliable and can be productuve this season. D. Jarrett needs to become more consistent and if he can make some progress he'll be their #2 some day.
Jim (Detroit Rock City)
Tag Team, Where does Matt Jones end up?
Tag Ribary (1:09 PM)
Good question. I don't have a crystal ball but it wouldn't surprise me if he were picked up sometime during training camp once injuries the start to pile up.
Brett (San Antonio, TX)
So what's Drew saying about Rexy now. He promised he'd be on a team before training camp.
Chad (Las Vegas)
It was just announced that the NFL will not be going after the Williams' suspenstions. Will this have any effect on the Saints players with the same case/problem?
Tag Ribary (1:13 PM)
They are probably wating to see how the William's decision comes out but I don't know for sure if it will directly improve their chances. I will say that I'd be surprised if the players win.
T-Rib, as a former pro scout, could you have ever imagined all of the changes in the game the last few years? The Wildcat, the focus on 2 or 3 running backs, etc? It's amazing watching the evolution of the game.
Tag Ribary (1:14 PM)
Ricky, I agree some of the changes are dramatic. The number of players that teams can suit up on game day has brought about quite a bit of creativity by the coaches and a demand on a players ability to be used in multiple roles. It sure keeps things interesting.
Who will b the Detroit lions starting QB?
Tag Ribary (1:17 PM)
If you're talking week one my money would be on Culpepper. I'm anxious to see Stafford play but I'd be shocked if he were able to get up to speed in time to win the job outright during training camp.
Chad (Las Vegas)
Follow up on Ricky (Dallas) Q. Is the NFL just becoming too pysical to have 1 RB, WR, or even QB. These guys are getting bigger, faster, stronger every year.
Tag Ribary (1:21 PM)
A teams ability to stay healthy is critical so you have to have quality depth. You're right, the players are getting faster each year and you have to have good depth if you are going to survive a 16 game schedule. If the league decides to go 18 games I hope they increase the roster limits becuase that is a lot of wear and tear on the players bodies. It also makes a good case for having quality personnel in your scouting departments, ha.
do u think the redskins will try to trade the farm for vince young no that he says he wants out if he not playing
Tag Ribary (1:22 PM)
I don't see that one happening.
Tag- Do you think James Davis has a legitimate chance to be the Brown's starting RB by the end of the year?
Tag Ribary (1:24 PM)
Only if there are some injuries and they are left with limited options.
At this point is it safe to assume the Browns will franchise Braylon next year? If Quinn develops and they have a decent year, could all the young talent convince Edwards to sign a long term deal?
Tag Ribary (1:28 PM)
Hi Kevin. I could see the Browns putting the franchise tag on him next year if they don't get him signed to a long term deal at some point. He obviously has a lot of value and that's probably their best option for either locking him up for one more year or trying to get something in return if they are going to entertain trade possibilities. There is a lot of time between now and next offseason however.
Tag, Shouldn't the Lions let Stafford wait a year before thowing him out to the wolves. It isn't like they have a OL that can protect him. I loved Stafford when he was at UGA and I think he is going to be extremely successfull but not until the OL improves. It seems like a waste to just let him get pummled for 16 games.
Tag Ribary (1:31 PM)
Jeremy I usually agree with the idea to let young QB's sit for a year to watch/learn. Unless he shows unbelievable progress and they have really good success running the ball it can be detrimental to throw him out there too soon.
Who thinks the Steelers will go back to back?!!
Chad (Las Vegas)
Does it matter who the Browns franchise? They will stink anyway.
Tag Ribary (1:35 PM)
They need to keep as many good players as they can at this point and he's a guy you can build around. Without him they don't have a lot weapons that they can rely on. Cleveland is rebuilding so be patient
Tag, I am a big Packers fan and seem to be the only one excited about Ryan Grant. I truly believe the Green Bay brass used Rodgers too much to overcompensate for the Favre fiasco, and will resort more to a power running game this year, that is of course set up by the potent passing game. I hear they are implementing a new zone-blocking sceme, and if Grant is healthy all year I can easily see him eclipsing 1500 yards. Last year he got 1200 when he played poorly. What do you think Grant will do this year?
Tag Ribary (1:37 PM)
Grant could be very productive this year. Rushing for 1500 is challenging and the health of the offensive line will be a huge factor if he is going to have that kind of success.
With the Stafford/Johnson tandem,(if they can find a OL) we could be looking and the next great QB/WR tandem. Maybe one of the best ever!!! Johnson is a FREAK of Nature and if Stafford develops that is one nasty combo for opposing defenses. What ya think?
Tag Ribary (1:40 PM)
I'm a huge C. Johnson fan and he can make a lot of QB's look very good. If Stafford develops quickly Detroit fans could have a lot to be excited about in a short amount of time. Remember though, they have a long way to go, so be patient.
Jeff (East Bay, CA)
Tag...doesn't it make sense for the Jets to go after Matt Jones?
Tag Ribary (1:43 PM)
If they are comfortable with the character and supension stuff, sure. I don't know if that is the case however.
John (Columbus, OH)
Where would you rank Darelle revis among the top DB's in the league?
Tag Ribary (1:45 PM)
He's almost top 5 in my opinion.
Tim (San Diego)
Tag, if Merriman and Cromartie both return from injuries to 2007 form, do you see the Chargers as serious super bowl contenders?
Tag Ribary (1:48 PM)
Tim, I liked them last year before the injuries and I think they have a chance this year if they stay healthy.
Tag, Should I curb my enthusiam surrounding Rashard Mendenhall? I see his tape and trust the Steelers coaching so much that I think he could have a great future with them, starting with a solid season this year.
Tag Ribary (1:50 PM)
No, Mendenhall could be a huge factor for them this year. Particularly late in the year when they might have to rely on a power running game in bad weather.
Robert (Deep South)
Top of the morning to ya Tag! Hey bud, which NFC South team do you like this year to take control? Which team should everyone watch out for?
Tag Ribary (1:55 PM)
That's a tough one. Whoever is healthiest. I'll take Carolina but only because I'm biased. Atlanta and New Orleans could easily win the division if they get the defensive production they are hoping for.
If you were the Bills would you rather keep your current O-line and try to gel them by Week 1, or would you sign Levi Jones and move Walker back to RT?
Tag Ribary (1:56 PM)
I might try to add L. Jones for insurance. Don't really see the downside.
Steve (Rochester, NY)
I really like Oakland's signing of FB Lorenzo Neal for two reasons. First, it provides insurance in the event that Oren O'Neal isn't fully healed. Second, Oakland is a very young team and could use some veteran leadership particularly on offense. What kind of impact do you think Neal will have in Oakland both on the field and in the locker room?
Tag Ribary (1:58 PM)
If he can stay healthy he will help them on and off the field. That's a big if at his age though.
Shane (Los Angeles, CA)
TR: Putting aside for the moment contract issues, what do you think of a 3 way trade involving Peppers (to AZ), Boldin to (PHI), and draft picks (to CAR)? Reasons: Ariz O can still thrive without Boldin while their D could use the boost, PHI (more than any other contender) needs to win sooner than later with aging stars (McNabb & Westbrook), and CAR has a good team that can continue to contend with more draft picks since its not likely they will resign Peppers.
Tag Ribary (2:00 PM)
Shane. Good luck getting all that to happen but most of it makes sense.
Tag Ribary (2:00 PM)
Thanks for the chatter everyone. Have a great week.
