Chat with Michael Johnson

The world record-holding Johnson is up for election as a member of the 2009 class for the U.S. Olympic Hall of Fame presented by Allstate. Fans have a chance to vote for the nominees at TeamUSA.org. The class will be announced in July and the ceremony will be held on August 12 in Chicago.
Johnson is perhaps best known for his 200-meter and 400-meter double gold at the 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta. He won both races for the first time in Olympic history. He set world records in both races, with his 400 time still a current record. The 200 time was broken by Usain Bolt at the 2008 Games in Beijing. Johnson enjoyed watching Bolt run his races during the Games.
Since his retirement from racing, Johnson has moved on to training, opening the Michael Johnson Performance Center in Dallas, for both professional and youth athletes. Five 2009 NFL first round picks trained at the facility.
Send your questions and join Johnson at 1 p.m. ET on Wednesday!

Former Olympian Michael Johnson will be here soon to take your questions!
Buzzmaster (1:07 PM)
We've got Michael!
Matt (IN)
So Michael, are you wearing your gold shoes for the chat?
Michael Johnson (1:07 PM)
I'm wearing some white ones right now. The gold shoes were auctioned off for some good charities after the Olympics.
Will, NYC
Were you disappointed to see your 200 record fall to Bolt?
Michael Johnson (1:08 PM)
No, I wasn't disappointed. The great thing about breaking records is the accomplishment. 10 years after my career and still holding the record. I wasn't disappointing, I was happy that I could see it because it was one of the best track and field performances I've ever seen.
Josh (Vermont)
How special was it for you to have the great meet that you had in 1996 and have it be in your home country?
Michael Johnson (1:09 PM)
It was extremely special. It's special that I had the opportunity to participate in the Olympics and represent your country. But then have the rare opportunity to compete in your home country. It's something that not a lot of people have the chance to do. It was a very very special opportunity for me.
Dave (Charlotte, N.C.)
Not that you need any help getting into the U.S. Olympic Hall of Fame, but have you reached out to all of your family and friends to get them to go to teamusa.org to submit votes on your behalf?
Michael Johnson (1:10 PM)
I haven't actively gone out and recruited, but I know that many of them have done that. There are some great candidates out there..I wouldn't say that I don't need any help. I would say that I do, just to be on the safe side.
nathan (Michigan)
What is a way you use to try and zone out the pressure before a run?
Michael Johnson (1:12 PM)
It's not necessarily zoning out, it's zoning in moreso. Making sure my focus is on the task at hand and running the way I trained to. During that time just before the race, just as I teach athletes now, to keep the nerves down and keep the focus off the potential poor results or any results. It should be on the execution, visualizing yourself performing the way you've been training to.
jimmy (flint,mi)
how do you feel about what usain bolt is doing?
Michael Johnson (1:13 PM)
I think it's great for the sport. I think he's a phenomenal talent. He's one of those athletes that every 10-15 years is special and has extraordinary talent, starts to re-write the rules of what we thought was possible, or for Bolt, what we thought was the ideal height for a sprinter. He's shown us that 6-1, 6-2 might not be the ideal height for a sprinter.
Kyle (Kansas)
How long have you had your training center in Dallas?
Michael Johnson (1:14 PM)
Next week we will celebrate our two year anniversary. We help athletes at all levels to improve their athleticism. It's not just for athletes that will become superstars or think that they will be. We train them to be stronger, faster, quicker relative to the sport atht they play.
Hook (Southern Maryland)
In your prime, do you think you could bea Usain Bolt?
Michael Johnson (1:15 PM)
Absolutely! I think that he's a great athlete. I think he's a great 200 meter runner. I think I was a great 200 meter runner. It's great when you have two of the best over a period of time in their prime. If I were running against Usain Bolt, absolutely I think I could beat him.
chauncey (teaneck)
What are your feelings on track athletes who used steroids?
Michael Johnson (1:16 PM)
It's obviously unfortunate when an athlete in track and field or any sport chooses to cheat. Any time I see an athlete get caught, it's a double edge sword that they're a track and field athlete cheating, but they're getting caught.
Mark, Chicago, IL
What do you think of the company you are keeping as one of the nominees this year? Who have you voted for?
Michael Johnson (1:17 PM)
I think you know there are a lot of great athletes worth being considered. I've always been a fan of Ruthie Bolton, a great basketball player who I believe was the captain of the 1996 women's basketball team.
CAL (St. Paul, MN)
Which one of your Olympic victories are you the most proud of?
Michael Johnson (1:18 PM)
I'm proud of all of them. It's difficult to take one and single it out and say this one is more special. They all take hard work and are all great accomplishments. They're all great and special for their own reasons.
Nick (Indy)
Who do you think is gonna win the NBA Finals?
Michael Johnson (1:19 PM)
I do watch a lot of other sports. I'm a big NFL fan. The NBA, I watch during the finals. I would have to go with Orlando at this point. They have so many more weapons and they're a much more complete team.
CAL (St. Paul, MN)
Who was the toughest competitor you ever faced?
Michael Johnson (1:20 PM)
The toughest would have to be Frankie Fredericks, the silver medalist in 1992 and 1996 in the 100 and 200 meters. We competed in college as well.
Michael Johnson (1:20 PM)
I appreciate the support! Go vote for me.
