AJ Mass (10:57 AM)
Welcome to the chat --- grabbing that second cup of coffee and ready for the next sixty minutes of caffeined fantasy goodness. Who's up first?
alex cora (new york mets)
with reyes still out, do i get a lot more playing time?
AJ Mass (10:58 AM)
Not only with Jose Reyes out - but with Argenis Reyes in and like 0-for-his last 20... I hope Cora gets more PT than he does.
Peter (West Orange, NJ)
3 steals last night for Pierre. Seems like he wants to go out with a bang before Manny returns. is there any reason to hold onto him though, or any chance he gets traded or sees increased playing time when Manny returns?
AJ Mass (10:59 AM)
I'd hold on to him. He's going to play some, but certainly Ethier's recent power surge makes it less likely. I still think the Dodgers would be best served by trading him - but probably won't find too many takers.
how many save do you think howell 'll have at the end of this season?
AJ Mass (11:01 AM)
Maybe around 15. Not convinced he's the guy going forward, but I'd ride him while he's hot, as that's what Maddon will do.
Hi AJ, I'm sipping on a grande Sumatra from Starbucks myself - good stuff! Wondering who you like more from here on out between D-Lowe and Liriano? Pretty even in my opinion...
AJ Mass (11:03 AM)
Two very different pitchers... but if K's are involved at all, I think you have to like Liriano more going forward.
Can Kevin Correia keep up his domination, or is he primed to fall back to earth? Him or Blanton for the rest of the season? I need to make a pick-up.
AJ Mass (11:04 AM)
I'd go with Correia. He's no Peavy, but he's getting the job done and outside of Happ, there's no Phillies pitcher who has looked remotely good of late.
AJ, I can deal Aaron Hill for Ellsbury to fill my Utility position. Should I pull the trigger?
AJ Mass (11:06 AM)
If you need steals, I wouldn't hesitate.
I drink mt dew, not coffee... Sizemore and King Felix for Braun and DPrice... which side do you like?
AJ Mass (11:07 AM)
I'd take the Braun/Price side. Felix is the better pitcher, but I'm not convinced Grady makes it all the way back to his former self this season.
Jason (Baltimore, MD)
Take your pick: Matt Kemp, Matt Holliday or Justin Upton?
AJ Mass (11:08 AM)
Unless and until Holliday moves, I'm going with Kemp - especially with Manny's return sure to help stabilize that lineup.
Is it fair to veto the first place teams trade??? Casey Blake and Mcctuchen for Zambrano??? Vetoable?? And yes I am the team in first and yes someone needed both of those psitions filled.
AJ Mass (11:09 AM)
Not in the least bit vetoable, and reason number 456927472 why I don't play in leagues where votes on trades exist.
Why isn't Zimmermann starting today? The most recent edition of Daily Notes has him starting but Stammen is scheduled to start today. Is he injured?
AJ Mass (11:10 AM)
Just a reshuffle after Martis' demotion - Zimm takes the mound on Wednesday.
Not fond of either, but out of Wandy rodriquez and Kuroda, which would you keep?
AJ Mass (11:13 AM)
I like Wandy better right now, but I think Kuroda will win more games over the course of the season, especially once Manny returns.
Michael (Portland, ME)
Is Chad Gaudin a must start in NL-only leagues?
AJ Mass (11:14 AM)
Still think he's a spot starter, though obviously if you are thinner than others, you do what you have to.
what's your take on Nate Schierholtz? Expectations the rest of the way?
AJ Mass (11:16 AM)
I like him, I'm just waiting for the Giants to realize they have a better shot at Winning without Randy Winn and put Nate in 100 percent of the time.
I can only start one - Baker or Smoltz?
AJ Mass (11:17 AM)
Baker - I need to see Smoltz get through a game far better than his first outing vs WAS.
Todd (San Francisco)
Rookie fantasy baseball question: should I ever start Juan Rivera or Cody Ross over Matt Kemp? Trying to figure out if I should play matchups or just ride the top players everyday regardless. Thanks!
AJ Mass (11:18 AM)
If you're talking straight Roto, then I leave my best guys in for the long haul. If we're talking H2H, then it's a little more palatable to play the matchups game.
AJ, I'm getting that fantasy football feeling. Are you involved with the draft kit? When will it be published?
AJ Mass (11:19 AM)
Draft Kit will be coming this week. We've got plenty of good stuff in there, and as soon as this chat is done, I'm finishing off my Ravens preview... almost there, Drew.
billy stevens (lake joe)
who is the more valued OF from here on out. Pods or Ross? I need to drop one to get Cabrera back in my lineup....
AJ Mass (11:20 AM)
Ross, but of course, it comes down to need as well. SBs are more Pods' game as opposed to HR.
Would you rather have Adrian Gonzalez or Victor Martinez at 1st?
AJ Mass (11:21 AM)
I'd rather have V-Mart, even though I think Adrian is the better player - but he's not going to get anything good to swing at with runners on base.
Hey AJ, Carlos Lee has a lot of empty numbers in terms of fantasy value even though his numbers look good overall. Do you see him doing some more damage in the second half? Thanks!
AJ Mass (11:23 AM)
I agree with you. Lee is #56 right now in my rankings, but has plenty of momentum and I see a better second half from him. Hang tight.
Surgery for Beltre makes him 100% droppable? I have Kouz and Harris to fill in @ 3rd, need to make room for Ibanez.
AJ Mass (11:24 AM)
Yes. It's a two month recovery minimum once he goes under the knife from what I understand.
Looks like you got the new system down...working much faster this week. When it comes to bein in first place in categories, when is the lead good enough to work on your other needs??
AJ Mass (11:25 AM)
I think you need to analyze the gap and average numbers per week. For example, if you are ahead by 10 in a category, but expect to lose only 1 of that category each week, that's better to deal away than a lead of 100 where you expect to lose 20 each week.
So if you don't play in leagues with votes for vetoes, how do you prefer vetoes? LM decision?
AJ Mass (11:27 AM)
I think the best scenario is to play in leagues with people you know and trust. They're far less likely to make "nefarious" deals. Then I let every deal go through. In a league with strangers, you're begging for collusion or cheaters, and you should expect vetoes of every deal, so what's the point?
Why no talk on Beltran? he is probably the most valuable player that has issues right now
AJ Mass (11:29 AM)
Not much that we know for sure, other than he's out and that the prognosis appears worse today than it did before. I'd assume he's not back this season and be happy if I'm wrong.
TRADE POLICE (Bristol, CT)
I know you said earlier you hate playing in leagues where vetoes exist, but this trade just passed over the wknd and many in the league feel it needs to be reversed. HanRam, Price, Blake, and Bruney for Burnett, Renteria, Lowell, Scott, Buckner, Figaro. Do you feel it is so bad that it needs to be over-turned? Thanks
AJ Mass (11:33 AM)
I look at it this way - if the first place team made the trade and got the Burnett side, would we veto? Would it be different if the first place team was getting HanRam? It shouldn't matter, and yet it does. Rather than veto, I'd rather have a window where other teams can offer a deal in response and let the owners decide on the best deal possible - but to allow vetoes without offering up your own deal is just sour grapes in my opinion.
You posted a question about Carlos lee but didn't answer it before, what are your thoughs on him for the 2nd half?
AJ Mass (11:34 AM)
It posted here in my caht list, but just in case - I said he was in 50's in my rankings with a lot of momentum and expected a solid 2nd half.
This is most certainly a stupid question, but is there any way that McGehee keeps up this pace?
AJ Mass (11:35 AM)
Perhaps not to this extent, but I think he's definitely legit and a solid NL-only starter right now.
Doug Davis (Arizona)
Am I really a top 50 starter?
AJ Mass (11:36 AM)
No, I'd have you as a spot-starter in a 10-team mixed, but not a must own right now.
MC Welk (SLC)
Would you mess with the Johan by trading him?
AJ Mass (11:37 AM)
MC there is no such thing as an untouchable in my book. It's all about value in return, and what your team needs.
How's Berkman's momentum?
AJ Mass (11:38 AM)
It's at a negative 5 right now, meaning he's poised for a bit of a slump, but nothing too serious that should warrant a huge amount of concern.
Ryan (East Lansing)
Would you rather have Leo Nunez or Jason Frasor?
AJ Mass (11:39 AM)
I'd rather have Frasor. I don't think Nunez is all that.
JJ Hardy (Milwaukee)
Was last night's performance the start of my big second half everyone has been praying for?
AJ Mass (11:41 AM)
Certainly it was a good night, but it was against Nieve. Not exactly Johan. I'd need to see more.
What are your thoughts on JA Happ? He looked pretty spectacular over the weekend. Is he worth a roster spot in standard mixed leagues?
AJ Mass (11:42 AM)
If you read my Out of the Box on Sunday, you'd know that I'd rather have Happ than Hamels right now. I think that answers your question.
Brian (San Diego)
Jose Lopez or Ian Stewart at 2nd in a keeper league?
AJ Mass (11:43 AM)
Lopez, and with Beltre going out, he might even manage 3B eligibility in some leagues.
COFFEE NOW!!!! Matt LaPorta will be a fixture in the Indians starting lineup by _____.
AJ Mass (11:43 AM)
Pete (Ellicot City)
Who are the top 5 momentums right now?
AJ Mass (11:45 AM)
Callaspo, Carp, Dusty Ryan, C. Guzman and Schneider. Players who have seen sudden upticks in PT often get high momentum scores.
Webb (Operating Room)
Am I done? Should I be kept for 2010 in the hopes I come back strong next season
AJ Mass (11:47 AM)
In a keeper league you don't write off a pitcher like Webb going forward. The question is whether your 2009 fate will suffer from trading/cutting him - but you don't rid yourself of a Webb or a Beltran in keeper leagues.
Gilligan (The Island)
Ginger or Mary Anne ??
AJ Mass (11:48 AM)
Mary Anne - she was the glue that held the HoneyBees together.
Alan (San Diego)
Marmol was just dropped in our league. Should I use my top waiver priority on him?
AJ Mass (11:49 AM)
No. As a Marmol owner is several leagues, I can attest that the WHIP damage isn't worth top waiver priority.
How about the top 5 momentums on regular starters
AJ Mass (11:51 AM)
Morneau, V-Mart, Lind, Scutaro, Zimmerman, M Young, Tejada, Sandoval - all have high momentums.
Chris (Hoboken, NJ)
Any system that contains the word "Scneider" in it in a positive light, is a very serious flawed system.. sorry AJ.
AJ Mass (11:53 AM)
I respectfully disagree - the system is designed to identify players with a huge surge in stats. As Schneider went from DL to actually producing stats, if he wasn't high on the list, I'd say the system didn't work. You still have to use in conjunction with other value stats, but it is valuable.
AJ Mass (11:54 AM)
Breaking trade news--- one moment.
AJ Mass (11:56 AM)
Pittsburgh Trib reports Hinske to the Yankees for minor leaguers. OF Garret Jones called up from Triple-A. Not huge but AL-only power seekers could rejoice. Probably also means Nady not coming back.
Jason (San Diego, CA)
Derosa or Sandoval?
AJ Mass (11:58 AM)
Sandoval. I don't like DeRosa behind Pujols. Now, if he goes to 2-spot or LaRussa moves DeRosa to 3 and Pujols 4, then we'll talk.
Hinske (NY via PA)
I just got traded and even I don't consider that post worthy.
AJ Mass (11:59 AM)
Hey, I didn't say earth-shattering - just breaking.
Michael (Portland, ME)
Do you mean Jordan ZimmermanN in the momentum stats?
AJ Mass (12:00 PM)
No, Ryan. Momentum is a hitters stat.
Juan Rivera worth a top 10 closer?
AJ Mass (12:01 PM)
I'd make the deal if I were giving Rivera, but not the other way around.
AJ Mass (12:02 PM)
Well, that hour flew by, folks. Time to run, but there's another chat at 3pm. We'll be back on Thursday at 11. Thanks for the Q's. Until then, we'll see you the next time on Villa Alegre!
