Chat with Beano Cook
Welcome to SportsNation! On Wednesday, ESPN's Beano Cook makes his monthly stop in SportsNation to chat about the college footbal offseason.

Send your questions now and join Cook Wednesday at 3 p.m. ET!
Beano Cook (3:00 PM)
Good afternoon and welcome, nice to be back chatting with you. We are almost in August, and I cannot wait for the season to start. I know some people are excited about the baseball trade deadline, but Alabama-Virginia Tech on ABC on September 5th is more interesting to me. For those who still care about baseball, you should go see your psychiatrist. Let's begin.
Brian (Salt Lake City, Utah)
When is the Big 10 going to get serious and add another team so they can split the conference and finally have a conference championship game?
Beano Cook (3:01 PM)
The Big Ten has to stop waiting for Notre Dame. The Irish will never join a conference as far as I believe. They don't want to split the TV money. I have always said the logical team to add would be Missouri. I said that 30 years ago and I still feel that way. It is more like the Big Ten schools than the Big 12 schools.
Cookin' with Beano!! The old man in State College seems to have some added jump in his step since getting the hip replaced. Recruiting is up, the wins are up... Any chance you see PSU winning or playing for a national championship before Joe decided to hang them up?
Beano Cook (3:04 PM)
Penn State could play for the national title this year because of an easy non-conference schedule and a favorable league schedule, compared with the Big 12, ACC and Pac-10. Non-conference games are Akron, Syracuse, Temple, Eastern Illinois -- not exactly an SEC schedule, is it? So the answer is yes, the Nittany Lions could play for the national title this season. Remember, Iowa knocked Penn State off last season or we could have seen Paterno and company playing for the title a year ago.
Tom (Gainesville, Fla.)
What did you think of Steve Spurrier's omission of Tim Tebow from the SEC First team?
Beano Cook (3:06 PM)
His director of operations filled out the ballot and obviously made a big mistake. I believe what Spurrier said. I hope his director of operations books charters better than he picks players!
Jason (State College)
Any chance of BCS changes taking place in the near future? Playoffs?
Beano Cook (3:09 PM)
No, John Swofford said it the other day, that due to TV deals, there won't be changes in the BCS. That is a poor excuse. You can have a plus-one, and TV won't complain, believe me. Not having one game, or three games involving four teams, doesn't make sense to me. At one time, college football was bigger in this country than pro football. For instance, in 1970, NBC would have taken the NCAA football and not the AFC. When the NCAA stayed with ABC, NBC took the AFC. The colleges have never promoted its game the way that the NFL has. Very few people know that.

Beano, so glad you're back. I always have wished that if I had grandfather, he would have a friend just like you.
Beano Cook (3:10 PM)
I take that as a compliment, even though you didn't mean it. In a couple of years I could be a great-grandfather.
The Gipper (Bloomingdale, N.J.)
What's your toghts on Notre Dame's chances to be in a BCS bowl this year? And will Jimmy Clausen ever be a Heisman candidate with Ron Powlus as his QB coach?
Beano Cook (3:12 PM)
A Notre Dame QB always has a chance to be in the Heisman race. Look how many have won the award over the years. As for a BCS bowl, Notre Dame is a shoo-in for nine wins against that schedule, and with 10, yes, a BCS bowl...I can't wait for Tulsa-Notre Dame on NBC in 2010!
Tommy (Lion fan)
What did you think of Penn State being named best party school in America?
Beano Cook (3:14 PM)
When I was an undergraduate and visiting two friends, I thought it was a good party school then. Maybe they redshirted a few party kids last year to be number one this year. Some of the best college parties I went to were at the Phi Delt house.
Is Beliema gone if Wisconsin has another sub-par year?
Beano Cook (3:16 PM)
No. There is pressure, but I think he can survive with one more bad year, though not with two. I am not saying he will, and he gets a break not playing Penn State the next two years. Wisconsin does have to go to Ohio State,
The Mighty Thor [via mobile]
I'm ashamed to admit this but I've started watching a TV program called "Paris Hilton's New BFF" where she auditions people to be her new best friend. I started thinking ESPN should do a show called "Beano Cook's New BFF". Any interest in doing this? I know some people that work there.
Beano Cook (3:17 PM)
At my age, I don't have the assets that Paris Hilton has.
Beano, my man, how do you handle the long college football offseason? I think if the only thing I get to read about for much longer is recruiting rumors I'm going to go nuts!
Beano Cook (3:19 PM)
It is tough. I have had some health issues, so my mind wasn't completely on football. It really is tough. It is like not having iced tea, or missing re-runs of Hart to Hart or Casablanca.
How will Georgia do without Stafford and Moreno on offense?
Beano Cook (3:21 PM)
That is a problem for Mark Richt, though guys have waited in the wings and depth is there. Playing a tough non-league schedule with Oklahoma State and Arizona State, you see Vince Dooley is not the coach any more. There is some pressure growing in Athens, and it doesn't have to do with the pantheon.
J.B. (Dunmore, PA)
Who still shows reruns of Hart to Hart? I loved that show!
Beano Cook (3:22 PM)
That's the problem. Robert Wagner and Stephanie Powers were great, perfect casting.
Matt The Intern (Dumont, New Jersey)
There's been many complaints by NFL players saying that the NFL is becoming a "soft" sport. Do you think that this might rub off on the college game?
Beano Cook (3:24 PM)
First of all, what I see on Sunday is far from soft. I live in Pittsburgh and I guarantee you this city is not soft. You are entitled to your opinion. I don't feel college football is soft anyway.
Adam R (Connecticut)
Beano, what one player has excited you the most over the last 10 years?
Beano Cook (3:26 PM)
Tim Tebow. That's any easy question. I think he is one of the five greatest offensive players in the history of college football. I don't rank him among the top five best players of all-time because I don't know he'd fare on defense, like guys to go both ways like Red Grange, Johnny Lujack and Doak Walker and were outstanding on both sides of the ball.
Alex Ballentine (New Philadelphia, Ohio)
Beano, on behalf of everyone participating in this chat and college football fans around the world, I would like to take this time to thank you. You are a breath of fresh air to the SportsNation chats. You know how to relate to the fans and make us laugh. You are a true inspitation to aspiring sports analysts around the world. Once again, thank you for your contribution to making the world a better place to live. You are a true Hall of Famer in my book. You will always have a special place in my heart, mind, and soul. Have a great day, and continue to do what you do. Stay safe, Beano.
Beano Cook (3:28 PM)
I don't print the bad ones. Some don't feel that way. The people who like it great, the people who don't, sorry. Nice to see my relatives are checking in on the chat.
How much pressure is there on Miami's Randy Shannon? The Hurricanes have a pretty tough early-season schedule...
Beano Cook (3:30 PM)
The September schedule is one of the toughest I have seen in recent years. Florida State, Oklahoma, Virginia Tech, Georgia Tech ... would it be a total shock if this team went 0-4 against that schedule? No. Shannon is under some pressure. It would be a bigger shock if the Hurricanes went 4-0 against that schedule.
Matt (Sterling Heights, MI)
What do you expect Michigan's record to be this year under Rich Rodriguez?
Beano Cook (3:31 PM)
Good question. That is one of the toughest teams to figure their record in 2009. The non-conference schedule is easy except for Notre Dame. Let's say 3-1 in non-league, and since the Big Ten is not the SEC, I would say Michigan should win at least seven games.
Anil Palep (Pensacola, FL)
Hey Beano....Which SEC matchup intrigues u the most? And why?
Beano Cook (3:34 PM)
That's easy, Florida vs. LSU on Occober 1oth. It is a great college football day with Alabama at Mississippi and Gators-Tigers at night. Of course people will be curious to see what Urban Meyer does to Lane Kiffin...Meyer is not one to get mad...just ask Mark Richt and Georgia!
Are you sure that was such an easy question regarding Tebow Beano??? I mean wow Vince Young and Reggie Bush were such talents, you couldn't miss any snap they took because they could take it to the house on any play and make 6 or more guys miss tackles along the way! Tebow's amazing but not the most exciting player of the decade!
Beano Cook (3:35 PM)
To me Tebow was an easy choice, winning two national titles and a Heisman Trophy. I understand those other guys were great, and if you go back further to the Rocket at Notre Dame in terms of exciting players...
Is Florida State better off without Bobby Bowden?
Beano Cook (3:35 PM)
That is a ridiculous question.
Jeremy Rose (Jacksonville, Fl)
Hey Beano, is Ole Miss overrated this year or do you think they are an actual contender?
Beano Cook (3:37 PM)
I think they are a legitimate contender to win that division. Alabama and LSU have to go to Oxford. When you are making picks, the schedule is very important. Florida has won its national championships in its three even years with the more favorable schedule; LSU has won in its odd years.
Cory (Avon, CT)
You think Tim Tebow is one of the top 5 offensive players to EVER PLAY COLLEGE FOOTBALL?????? This is a joke right? If not please explain, because the kid lost to Ole Miss last year and was easily beaten out in the Heisman race by Bradford.
Beano Cook (3:38 PM)
Again, look at his overall body of work. They won the national title last year, isn't that more important than the loss to Mississippi. By the way, Snead is really good for the Rebels.
Donald D (Eugene, OR)
Can you lend your voice to try to stop any talk of the PAC10 adding teams or doing anything else that gets rid of the full round-robin schedule? So what if a couple average teams don't get enough wins to qualify for a minor bowl? The PAC10 is the only conference that does it righ.
Beano Cook (3:39 PM)
The Pac-10, if it took two teams like BYU and Utah, would make some sense. There is nothing wrong with a round-robin schedule, and I know of no plans for the Pac-10 to expand.
Fact or Fiction...Nick Saban is the best coach in college football
Beano Cook (3:40 PM)
Fiction. I would say the best coach is Urban Meyer.
Steve (Blacksburg, VA)
Beano - What do you expect from the VA Tech/Alabama game on Sept. 5 in Atlanta?
Beano Cook (3:41 PM)
Ask me next month when I chat. That is an excellent game. I think it is a smart move on Alabama's part to play somebody good the first weekend of the season.
wes dennis (hixson,tn)
Hey Beano, what do you think about Lane Kiffin as a head coach? What do you most like and what do you most dislike about how he has stirred the pot?
Beano Cook (3:44 PM)
We will find out. Kiffin certainly annoyed some people, and we will see if there is payback. His talent will be challenged. By the way, news flash. Connecticut wlll tbe first opponent for Michigan in the refurbished stadium next season. The Huskies have come a long way in a short time. Randy Edsall's program has a six-year deal with Notre Dame and now a deal with Michigan. Also plays North Carolina this year in non-conference at Connecticut.
Beano, are you back weekly or was this a one-time chat?
Beano Cook (3:45 PM)
I will be back in late August for the weekly chats... this one still has some more time left,
I wasn't aware this was an SEC chat, I thought it was all NCAA FB. Urban Meyer best coach? Pete Carroll, Stoops, Tressel? Urban Meyer is definitely in the conversation, but is he really above any of these guys? I'd think they're all at roughly the same level. Maybe not Stoops...
Beano Cook (3:46 PM)
I am only picking one coach and I stay with Meyer.
Do you think the heismann voters might choose McCoy over Tebow because Tebow's already won the heismann
Beano Cook (3:47 PM)
Yes. That is a possibility. It all depends on what happens. If you look at Texas, there are two tough games -- at Oklahoma State, vs. Oklahoma. You have to love a player named Colt. I also liked Colt Brennan! My favorite name of any college player was Doak Walker.
Alexander (San Francisco)
Is Cal for real this season?
Beano Cook (3:49 PM)
We ask that every year and we usually say no. This year could be different.
Beano Cook (3:50 PM)
By the way, Meyer was great at Bowling Green and Utah. I know Saban fans will say Michigan State and LSU besides Alabama. You can make a case for Saban.
We're still waiting for "Haven't They Suffered Enough: The Autobiography of Carroll H. Cook." When will our patience be rewarded?
Beano Cook (3:51 PM)
I am working on a book. Four chapters are done. We are looking for a publisher. Very good.
Ken (Scottsdale, AZ)
In your lifetime of covering college football, have you seen a more ridiculous story covered at such great length as as the Tebow/Spurrier missing vote nonsense?
Beano Cook (3:53 PM)
I have seen many more that were more ridiculous.
Chris Le Baron (Jacksonville, FL)
Which coach is on the hot seat this year?
Beano Cook (3:53 PM)
Charlie Weis is number one. And he knows it.
Beano Cook (3:54 PM)
Thanks for all of your questions. I will be back for the first of our weekly chats on Wednesday, August 26th...see you then.
