James Quintong (3:01 PM)
Good afternoon everyone. Lots of questions already in. I'll try my best to answer both baseball and football questions today. Heck, maybe there's some fantasy curling or pro wrestling questions I might get to as well.
Nyjer Morgan (Washington)
Believe in me now?
James Quintong (3:02 PM)
I'm believing now. I was taken aback when I saw the 40 steals this season. Serves me right for not keeping him as a cheap sleepers guy in my NL-only league. Take the speed now, but just be wary not to overspend on his steals next year. Just keep running, Nyjer.
Jason (St Louis)
Chad Ochocinco kicked an extra point last night. We can now use him at kicker right?
James Quintong (3:03 PM)
No, you can't use him at kicker. However, you would get credit for his extra point if this were a regular-season game.
Mitch D (Harrisburg, PA)
Hey James, Settle an argument us Phiily fans are having. I say Hameks will once again be a top 10 dominant pitcher in the future, having not even reached his prime. He'll eventuallly equal his counterpart Cliff Lee. True or False?
James Quintong (3:05 PM)
I think Hamels still has a bit more overall upside than Lee, although Lee has been ridiculous since joining the Phillies. This year, it's Lee, but for future years, I wouldn't be surprised if Hamels has a dominant season or two in him.
In an non PPR league, assuming the top 4 are AP, Turner, MJD and Forte....who would you take 5th? I have been agonizing over this selection
James Quintong (3:06 PM)
Opinions around here are all over the board, but I actually would be fine taking Tomlinson at this point.
Josh Kirby (Royse City)
How high is Tommy Hanson's ceiling and will be a fantasy ace next year?
James Quintong (3:08 PM)
I think Hanson could be close to fantasy ace material in a couple of years, so the ceiling is way high. As for being a bona fide fantasy ace next year, I'd be slightly hesitant. However, he could be a top 25-30 starting pitcher at the least next year.
Zach H. (Grand Rapids, MI)
Brees or Brady??
James Quintong (3:09 PM)
I'm still in the Brees camp. He just keeps on throwing and throwing, rolling up the numbers. I think Brady will be fine this year, but let's hope you're not expecting him to match his 2007 record campaign.
Al (Swedesboro NJ)
Who is a better in a keeper league J. Happ or Randy Wells or should I try to keep both of them?
James Quintong (3:11 PM)
I like Happ a lot, and I think he's got the better upside for a keeper league. Depending on the price to keep Wells, I wouldn't have a huge problem with it, although I'd also prefer keeping more hitters than pitchers.
Andrew C (Chicago)
Better keeper? already keeping utley and braun and i need one more. King Felix as a 5th rounder, Votto as an 8th rounder, verlander as a 16th rounder, nelson cruz as a 21st rounder, or reynolds as a final rounder?
James Quintong (3:12 PM)
Lots of nice options there, but I think Reynolds in the final round has to be the guy.
Is the number 7 pick too early to take Andre Johnson in a 12 team league?
James Quintong (3:13 PM)
As the first wide receiver overall, maybe not. It might depend on who else is going before him. And if it is a PPR league, then you might want to consider him.
MIKE (TAMPA, FL)
Smoak a $1 keeper in a very deep AL only league???
James Quintong (3:14 PM)
Stashing him away for the future is fine. In that lineup and that ballpark, he'd be a great bargain for future years if he's anywhere close to the hype.
JQ help me out - my wife is due today! Billingsley or Halladay, rest of '09 only?
James Quintong (3:15 PM)
Congratulations! And go with Halladay, there have been some hiccups with Billingsley that concern me.
Wilson, Gonzales, Gregg, Lindstrom...who gets the most saves the rest of 2009?
James Quintong (3:16 PM)
If that's Brian Wilson, then him.
Fantasy Football settings question...Are you a believer in having consistency in how many pts are awarded certain plays (positively and negatively), i.e., INT's being worth (-2) for QB's, while at the same time being ( 2) for IDP's?
James Quintong (3:18 PM)
Somewhat, but I wouldn't overthink it too much. Remember, most of your IDPs aren't getting yardage points, so it'll be hard to balance that out.
Please rank these potential OF keepers for 2010....Bourn, Pence, Markakis, Span
James Quintong (3:19 PM)
Let's go Markakis, Pence, Bourn, Span
How long until the fantasy experts release keeper rankings for 2010? I noticed Matt Berry made some early mentionings with his Ten lists of Ten column....how about yours and everybody else's input?
James Quintong (3:19 PM)
We've been talking about it in here internally. We'll probably have some deeper keeper rankings later in September, closer to the end of the season.
James, Slaton plays in a MUCH better offense than SJax. Does he put up better numbers this year in PPR leagues ?
James Quintong (3:21 PM)
Slaton may play in a better offense than Stephen Jackson, but with Jackson being the primary option, he could get a lot more looks. I guess I've been relatively high on Jackson in the past, so I'd give him the nod over Slaton, rankings-wise. However, I think there's a lot more downside to Jackson because of injuries, etc., compared to Slaton's downside.
Marlon (State College, PA)
I am buying the WR-WR in 1st and 2nd round for someone with late 1st round pick. Who besides Fitz, C and A Johnson, and R. Moss qualify for such expensive picks? S. Smith maybe, anyone else?
James Quintong (3:23 PM)
I think you've got the guys there for the WR-WR option if you want to corner the market on stud wideouts. I did it in the mock draft and felt fine with receivers, but felt a little lacking in running backs (although there's more chance to catch lightning in a bottle with some random out-of-nowhere back or sleeper guy who wakes up).
Mike (Tampa, FL)
Brett Wallace is on fire in AAA! If he gets called up in September, how much would you value him at to use him as a keeper in AL only leagues?
James Quintong (3:24 PM)
He's a must-add for AL-only keeper leagues, probably even right now, if you can get him on the roster and stash on the bench. If the A's bring him up, they'll find ways to get him in the lineup and he should produce.
Whats up JQ. In your drafts so far, where are you looking to take a TE? One of the big 4 early, or another guy later in the rounds?
James Quintong (3:26 PM)
Honestly, it depends on the flow of the draft. I took Gates relatively early in the most recent mock draft because I'd already gone WR-WR and wasn't enamored at taking another mid-level RB for my No. 3 back right away. I don't necessarily target one of the top four TEs immediately, but if I don't like the WR/RB or even QB options in the round 5-6 range, I'll take a swing at Gates/Gonzalez/Witten/Clark. Otherwise, I have no problem waiting a few rounds for Cooley/Daniels/Olsen.
In need of rotation help. Talking about ZITO. That's right. Barry. Super hot for a few weeks. Two games v Colorado this week and a quick check shows hes been very good against them in the past.
James Quintong (3:27 PM)
You could probably do a lot worse for a two-start pitcher. It's a risk, for sure, but worth a gamble.
Thanks for taking my question. What do you see from Matt Cassel this season? I have him and traded Chris Johnson for Aaron Rogers because I'm a little leery of Cassel's situation with the Chiefs. I figure Cassel is going to have to throw it a lot but I'm not convinced how good he can be. What do you think?
James Quintong (3:30 PM)
Cassel could throw for a lot of yards in that offense, and given that the Chiefs could be behind a lot. However, I do like that you have Rodgers, because I'd rather have him as my main guy over Cassel. There have been rumblings in camp that Cassel is not impressive and that Brodie Croyle has played well. I don't read much into it overall, but the fact that the word is filtering around does make me feel hesitant relying on Cassel by himself.
Hey James - I have my final supplemental draft for a keeper league tonight. For next year, who makes the most impact - Bumgarner, Smoak, or Posey?
James Quintong (3:32 PM)
I'm going to say Posey, especially since he's a catcher.
Phillip (Raleigh NC)
What are your thoughts on the fairness of a Peavy/Ordonez for Dan Haren trade? I know Peavy is on the DL, but is expected back soon. Thanks,
James Quintong (3:33 PM)
I don't have a huge problem with it. Haren has struggled in the second half, although Peavy and Ordonez are full of question marks themselves. A downside guy for a bunch of risk, no problems about fairness here.
Okay, so Wandy is officially a start-at-home-only pitcher, right?
James Quintong (3:38 PM)
No, you start him all the time. He's had that "start at home only" tag for a few years, but he's better than that. While he did get bombed for 10 runs in his last road start, he was pitching relatively well away from Houston before that. Obviously there's more risk with him on the road, but he's not necessarily night-and-day.
kevin streaty (san fernando)
Should I hold on to brandon marshall or try and trade him?
James Quintong (3:39 PM)
I'm a bit concerned with Marshall and his overall value. He's still recovering from a hip injury and now he's feuding with the coaching staff. I think if you can get a pretty good player for him (close to a top-10 receiver, for instance), I'd pull the trigger.
In a 14 team league would you be comfortable with Cassell and Favre as your QB's? only 4 pts a TD, 1 pt every 25yds
James Quintong (3:41 PM)
In a 14-team league, I think it's OK. While I mentioned I wasn't that high on Cassel, that's very much in a 10-team league with some potential bench options. I guess you can play the matchups with Cassel and Favre and be fine. I just hope you're strong in other areas, because your QB situation is so-so.
Thoughts on Manny down the stretch...hasn't had the power of late, could it be a lack or 'roids or do you see him finishing strong? I was under the impression he could be a free agent after this year...which may help motivate him
James Quintong (3:43 PM)
I think Manny will turn things around again to get himself ready for the playoffs. Remember that he is 37, so age may catch up with him a bit more. The power will come back a little.
Mike (the Bay)
In a 12-team football league would you rather pick 4th or 10th this year in order to maximize value in rounds 1-4?
James Quintong (3:47 PM)
Very good question. I think I might still pick fourth to pick from the group of "elite" backs then get a solid second-tier wideout and running back in the second and third rounds (in some order), then finding "best available" in the fourth. The 10th pick in a 12-team league is intriguing to me, though, since you should get an elite wideout for sure at 10, but I'd be wrestling with getting another elite receiver (if one is available) on the way back, or going with a decent running back. Because by the third round, the pool of running backs thins out a lot. (As you might've seen when I drafted 10th in a 10-team mock.)
Short term CF fix 'til Bruce is back: Fowler, Swisher, Hairston, or Byrd?
James Quintong (3:48 PM)
I'd go with Fowler -- will get you some speed, and is still improving.
should i pick up mickel vick
James Quintong (3:49 PM)
Maybe in the final round of a really deep league. There's too many unknowns about his eligibility and his role right now to be any more than a speculative pick.
Any chance Billy Wagner goes to a contender. What about Myers closing for Philly? Thanks much!
James Quintong (3:51 PM)
It's very possible that Wagner could get moved. I'm sure the Mets would be fine with it. However, there's no guarantee Wagner would close if he moves on. He's still recovering from surgery and it would be asking a lot of him to be the closer right away.As for Myers, he has the closing experience, and I think the Phillies would love to have him ready to go in the bullpen if they can't keep on relying on Brad Lidge. There doesn't seem to be room for Myers in the rotation, that's for sure.
Bill (Johnson City, TN)
Where does Wes Welker rank for WRs in a PPR league?
James Quintong (3:53 PM)
Pretty close to the top 10, above the 14 he's currently ranked in our rankings. Welker is awesome for PPR leagues, that's for sure.
Shane (Los Angeles, CA)
You seem to get a lot of "should I pick up XXX" questions...Those certainly are loaded when folks dont give you relevant information for you to give an assessment (I.e, size of the league, position you're drafting, where that player might be good value, etc.)...That being said, do you think Favre is a solid #2 QB pickup at draft day in a 12-team league for a very late round pick? By the time your #1 QB has his bye, we will all know if Favre is boon-or-bust.
James Quintong (3:55 PM)
A "solid" No. 2 is a bit much, but yes, that's exactly how you should approach drafting Favre, although I don't know if he's going to last until the very late rounds in your draft.
If you had to guess, what will Travis Snider's sophomore season look like? Would something like .275/.340/.500 be too much to hope for?
James Quintong (3:57 PM)
I think that's a nice level for Snider to shoot for. There's still plenty of upside, and hopefully the Jays will give him the chance to get close to those stats next year. I think he's also a nice bet for the rest of the year to prove he's still got the goods.
Do you think Hasselback can have a rebound year and be a "sleeper" since he is healthy and has a bona fide WR?
James Quintong (3:59 PM)
I was a lot higher on Hasselbeck being a "sleeper" type a few weeks ago before Walter Jones had another knee surgery. A big hole on the offensive line could get to him. Otherwise, yes, the pieces were in place for him to break out, especially with T.J. Houshmandzadeh there. I'd be fine with Hasselbeck as a No. 2 QB and hope to catch a good matchup or two.
Name a pitcher not currently a closer with the best chance to get some saves this year?
James Quintong (4:00 PM)
Well, I wouldn't be surprised if Kevin Gregg gets his closer's job back from the Cubs sooner rather than later.
James Quintong (4:01 PM)
OK, that's all the time I've got for today. If you want more fantasy football draft help, you can tune into ESPN2 shortly for the SportsCenter Fantasy Draft Special.Have a good weekend and good luck with all your teams.
