AJ Mass (11:01 AM)
Morning and happy September all. What's the good word today? Football on the agenda, so let's kick it off, shall we?
Jason (Ellicott City, MD)
Viva la AJ Mass!
AJ Mass (11:01 AM)
Which QB to start - Orton vs Farve vs Pennington?
AJ Mass (11:02 AM)
For Week 1, I go Favre. As the season progresses, those injuries may start to take their toll, but out of the gate, I see him doing quite well.
Good morning AJ, please help with the Browns backfield. Do you see any validity to the rumors that Jamal might not make the team out of training camp? Also, is Harrison still the #2 or has Davis actually passed him?
AJ Mass (11:05 AM)
I find it hard to believe that Lewis won't be on the team, but I also thought Brady Quinn would have been named starter two weeks ago. I think Harrison is the 2, but that brain trust seems to have an agenda of its own.
AJ Mass (11:05 AM)
Forgive the slow responses - the system is acting funny today.
What up AJ? Big draft tonight, who have been some of your biggest "movers" up or down the draft board in the last week or so?
AJ Mass (11:06 AM)
We're actually posting another round of ESPN experts' sleepers and busts this week. Personally I love Kevin Smith and really sour on Brandon Jacobs at RB.
Andy (St. Louis)
Do you think Robiskie is worth hanging on to as a backup? Or would guys like Williamson or L. Robinson be a better choice? Thanks
AJ Mass (11:07 AM)
Robinson is another guy I really like, especially if Bulger can stay healthy. I'd steer clear of Robiskie,as I think Massaquoi is better.
Who are the No. 1 and No. 2 WR's for the Giants going into the start of the season?
AJ Mass (11:08 AM)
I'd say Nicks and Smith, based on what I've seen, but nobody there has exactly lit the world on fire.
witten at pick 11 in 1st round of 1 ppr for tight ends only. still got jacobs, pierre thomas and ray rice at rb.
AJ Mass (11:09 AM)
Never played in that system, but certainly it makes taking a top-TE plenty intriguing. I think I'd take one of the "top 4" once the first was taken off the board, but I wouldn't break the seal on TE at 11 if the wraparound was close enough.
AJ! Can I get your thoughts on Rookies this year: Chris Wells, Donald Brown, Shonn Greene, and Percy Harvin?
AJ Mass (11:11 AM)
Greene = role player at best. Wells = not sure on him yet, I have concerns on durability. Harvin = don't grab him too soon, but that speed and Favre makes him a quality late-round pick for WR4. Brown = really like and think he gets plenty of carries, even usurping the starting job by Week 4 if not sooner.
Hey AJ, Have the third pick and have a tough time deciding. Assuming Peterson and Turner go 1 and 2 - Who are you taking? A lot of opinions go MJD, but I just don't know if i trust him, There's also Forte. Thoughts?
AJ Mass (11:12 AM)
I go Forte. MJD is not a bad pick, but I think with Cutler in Chicago, Forte's value goes up and MJD's drops just a bit without the Fred Taylor "protection"
How much playing time will stafford get in detroit? And also, how do you see the lions season playing out?
AJ Mass (11:13 AM)
I see 6 wins for Detroit. Daunte, assuming this toe injury isn't severe, should start Week 1 and pretty much stay in there until Week 10, when you can begin to slowly work Stafford in, assuming the Lions aren't 8-2 or something ridiculous like that.
ED (Washington DC)
Is Martellus Bennett a good number 2 TE option?
AJ Mass (11:15 AM)
I generally don't bother drafting a backup TE, as there's always a guy like Bennett on the waiver wire for the one week when you need a "bye week repalcement" - certainly, Bennett will have some value, but unless it's required, I don't see the need to use the roster spot.
Jason (Ellicott City, MD)
But without Fred Taylor's "protection," which I think was limiting MJD's fantasy potential, won't he put up bigger numbers with more touches and less split carries/vulture touchdowns?
AJ Mass (11:17 AM)
I actually think it hurts, because now there's no "Plan B" in place where if one of the two reliables went down, there'd be another to step up (as MJD had to do) -- I still see Greg Jones playing vulture, and if you look at last year's MJD stats without Taylor, he didn't really see too great a boost in touches. Mind you, he's still a back with top-5 potential... I just don't see the huge jump.
Care to elaborate on your sour for BJakes?
AJ Mass (11:18 AM)
Just scared to take him as my No. 1 given the injury history - and heck, he even got hurt vs NYJ, though not as bad as it could have been. Right now his ADP has him as a RB#1, and I'm not there. RB2 yes.
Chris (Charlotte, NC)
How much separation is there between Welker and Anthony Gonzalez this year?
AJ Mass (11:20 AM)
Plenty, because as much as I'd like to believe Gonzalez is finally going to step up and fill Marvin's shoes, he's had ample opportunity in the past and failed. On any given Sunday, he could get 8-100, but half of the time, I fear Tom Santi will have better numbers. Welker's a lock for 7 catches, 80 yards week in, week out.
Will Ward be a serviceable #2 RB this year? The committee scares me...
AJ Mass (11:22 AM)
You're not alone. Graham and Cadillac both could easily get Week 1 starts and although Gruden is no longer there, which would make me avoid the situation entirely... with the QB issues as well, I'm not sure even Raheem knows what he's going to do yet.
How early is too early to take Ray Rice in a 10-team PPR league?
AJ Mass (11:23 AM)
I like the Ravens offense this year and Rice should be a big part of it. I'd go 3rd-round with him easy.
I have a draft tonight in a league where we get .5 pts for recepetions. Should I not overthink things and stick with the standard ESPN rankings, or look more at the PPR rankings?
AJ Mass (11:25 AM)
I think in general, WR's get too much of a boost in PPR from most drafters, though I do think our rankings do a good job of weighting it appropriately. Many owners will go WR-WR in a PPR league, and I'd much rather go RB-QB-RB and take the top of the heap in those positions, then see what's left at WR.
Anthony (Brownwood, TX)
E. James worth a look at all?
AJ Mass (11:25 AM)
Sure, but not as anything more than a bench player.
David (Sothfield MI)
what are your top 3 defenses?
AJ Mass (11:26 AM)
PIT, NYG, NYJ
If you had a draft tonight would you take Royal before Marshall?
AJ Mass (11:26 AM)
I'd take Penny Marshall over Brandon Marshall with a draft tonight.
Is it okay to go WR/WR in a PPR league if you have the 10th pick out of 10 teams?
AJ Mass (11:29 AM)
Outside of going K/D - it's good to go in any way you want. No hard and fast rules...
What is your take on basically throwing a bye week? I wasn't really paying attention to bye weeks, and drafted Forte, Rodgers, Jennings, and Colston with my first four picks. All of which have the same bye.
AJ Mass (11:32 AM)
There is something to be said for that. After all, why play shorthanded every week for seven weeks straight, when you only have to do it once. Now, personally, as a commish, I'd require you to have live bodies in your lineup that week from your bench or face a points penalty --- but again, you're going to lose anyway. When it comes to draft day, I always draft best available player, and outside of being a tie-breaker on even talents, I never look at bye weeks.
So, you're drafting QBs early this year?
AJ Mass (11:33 AM)
In a PPR I would, if I can get Brees or Brady while others are going WR-crazy. However, in any other format, I'd stick to the 6th round and on strategy for QBs...
Robert Meachem or Earl Bennett as a better sleeper?
AJ Mass (11:34 AM)
I like Bennett myself. That prior relationship with Cutler makes him at worst No. 2 in Chicago.
no Minn in top Ds?
AJ Mass (11:35 AM)
I think they take a step back this year - not too great, but call it the Favre factor - being on the field and in the red zone far too often after those Favre-picks. Especially since in most leagues, pick-6 count against the D.
Whats up with crabtree... if he signs, what do you expect out of him... fantasy value wise??
AJ Mass (11:36 AM)
"IF" he signs, I'm not taking him in 2009. It's hard enough to get timing with a QB when you're in camp.
Can you explain why you would take a top QB in a ppr format and not in a standard?
AJ Mass (11:39 AM)
Because you need to get your 2-3 RB early, and I'm not willing to give that up in a regular league. In a PPR, because most owners go RB-WR-WR or some variance like that, and I'm willing to wait on WR, there are far more RBs avialable Round 4-5. I'm willing to use a high pick on one of the big QBs with that in mind.
Do you think the Ray Rice fan club is forgetting that willis mcgahee is still there? Do you agree that Willis and McClain are going to take away to many carries from Rice? Would you still rank him ahead of Beanie and Knowshon?
AJ Mass (11:41 AM)
I don't think McClain takes away carries between the 20s. Possibly as a vulture, but remember Le'Ron will be used as the blocking fullback this year with Neal gone. Willis is going to get carries, but I see this as a Taylor/MJD tandem at worst for Rice, and possibly more one-sided in his favor.
In a deep draft, do you draft talent and hope to trade or make sure you have depth everywhere? I took a lot of RBs early, just because I felt i couldn't pass them up
AJ Mass (11:43 AM)
I always try to draft my starting corps of RB/WR first and then I go best player available. However, I also assume trades won't get made - just the nature of the beast with vetos and hesitant owners - so I do make sure when in doubt, go RB since there are fewer out there.
Josh Morgan or Dominek Hixon. The ESPN rankings are close. PPR League.
AJ Mass (11:44 AM)
Morgan. Giants are and always will be run-first.
What are your thoughts on Carson Palmer this year? Can he be a legit QB1? Thanks.
AJ Mass (11:45 AM)
Absolutely. The receiving talent is there, especially if 85 is motivated... It comes down to the injuries, but if healthy, he's a stud.
Eddie (Hoboken, NJ)
Let me ask another way.... talk to me about the RB situation in NE?
AJ Mass (11:47 AM)
Throw darts and flip a coin. Maroney seems to be the best option, but you never know with them. Worse, I don't think Bill cares who goes in the huddle - Taylor, Green-Ellis, Eddie from Hoboken... As such, none can be taken before you have your full starting complement.
Rash (Floral Fruits)
How do you see D Bowe doing with Haley as O-Coordinator?
AJ Mass (11:48 AM)
I think the bigger issue is Thigpen at QB and when (if?) Cassell comes back. It's far too late in the game for much to change in whatever they've got planned, so Haley has little impact.
Jake (Eden Prairie, MN)
Can Roddy White be a top 5 WR?
AJ Mass (11:50 AM)
Certainly. At the top of the board, it usually comes down to whether or not those 70 yard bombs go for scores, or whether the receiver gets pushed out at the 5. There's a gaggle of names like Moss,TO, Megatron, Fitz, etc. that will be in the mix.
If I've taken Jennings in the 2nd, does that push Rodgers up my QB and take him a little earlier than I normally would? That is, do you like to take QB1/WR1 tandems if you can, or do you avoid them?
AJ Mass (11:51 AM)
I do tend to avoid them, but at the same time, I'm not passing on Warner for Jamarcus Russell just b/c I have Fitz or Anquan.
Quick hit: Crayton or Breaston?
AJ Mass (11:52 AM)
I like Breaston.
Royal or DeSean Jackson?
AJ Mass (11:53 AM)
DeSean. Not sold on Orton handling that offense, and with all the reverses and returns that could add to Jax's value, I go with him.
Antonia Bryant, yay or nay?
AJ Mass (11:54 AM)
Yay in a big way. Dude did everything right last season and now gets close to 80 percent of the WR targets.
Shockey having a rebound year? It seems like alot of people hate him, even in that NO offense
AJ Mass (11:55 AM)
Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice, shame on me... fool me four times?
Bradshaw or The Departed D. Ward?
AJ Mass (11:56 AM)
Bradshaw - he'll get carries for the change of pace/Jacobs rest role that Ward used to have - and while Ward could easily be a 100-yard back in any given week, I'm not sure he gets the rock out of the gate.
First week QB2 starter -- Shaun Hill, Jamarcus or Culpepper??
AJ Mass (11:57 AM)
Daunte. Throw it to Megatron and let the stats come.
Best chance to be a top 10 back in 2010, McFadden, Kevin Smith, Pierre Thomas, Ryan Grant.
AJ Mass (11:57 AM)
I have done drunk the Kevin Smith Kool-aid in a big way, as you'll see in our new sleepers list whne it arrives.
Have any issues with taking Rodgers over Peyton? I am really worried about the offensive line in Indy from what I have seen in pre-season
AJ Mass (11:58 AM)
Feel free. Without a guy like Marvin, I don't think it's a done deal that Peyton moves this offense swimmingly every week, especially with my concerns on Addai.
Flacco will finish as a top _ QB
AJ Mass (11:59 AM)
15 - with an outside shot at top 10.
Do you change strategy in a league that awards points for Return Yards, or do you leave the rankings more or less the same?
AJ Mass (12:00 PM)
I think you'd have to bump up guys like Cribbs, DeSean and Washington... but if you still start them in a RB or WR spot, then you don't need to go nuts with revising your lists.
Which rook has the best chance of starting by seasons end? James Davis, Donald Brown or Lesean McCoy.
AJ Mass (12:01 PM)
All have good chances - I think Brown due to my distaste for Addai, while McCoy won't necessarily start with a healthy Westbrook, though he'll spell him frequently throughout.
AJ Mass (12:02 PM)
That's the buzzer, gang! Thanks for the Q's. I believe Brendan is in at 3pm with a baseball chat, but check your local listings. We're back on Thursday - follow us on Twitter - and until then, we'll see you the next time on Villa Alegre.
