After watching the latest preseason games for each BEAST team, do you still stand by your rankings? If not what has changed?
Mosley (12:02 PM)
Haven't seen anything to change my mind on the rankings, but all those dropped balls by the Giants has me concerned about them a little bit.
Kevin (N. Potomac, MD)
Do you think Marcus Mason finally makes the cut on the Skins?
Mosley (12:02 PM)
Oh yeah. Put him on there.
KK (Reno)
Morning Matt - great work; love the beast. This is my first ever participation. Two continuous losses in preseason - anything to worry? Barden - with all the excitement he created before pre-season, why aren't we seeing enough of him - is he being prepared to surprise opponents in regular games?
Mosley (12:05 PM)
I don't think it has anything to do with the surprise element. He just hit a little wall -- that's all. He'll be fine.
Mike Hazelwood (Maryland)
Your thoughts on Marko Mitchell? Is he the 5th and final receiver for the SKINS??
Mosley (12:06 PM)
He has to make the roster. It's a no-brainer.
Phil S. (NJ)
Who starts opposite Santana Moss at WR for the Skins?
Mosley (12:07 PM)
Devin Thomas
Lynard Skynard (Bama)
I believe the Wildcat will be too dangerous for the Beast . Would you risk putting Mcnabb in a WR slot ?
Mosley (12:09 PM)
I don't think McNabb can do anything at receiver -- other than be a decoy.
Sanjay (da Iladel)
Do you think Giants fans will stop talking about how that Hixon drop completely changed the playoff game against the Eagles last year? Looks like that is going to be the norm for the Gmen.
Mosley (12:10 PM)
It doesn't matter. He dropped the ball and they lost the game. But that happened WAY early in the game. You can't convince me that everything hinged on that one play. The Eagles came out and manhandled the Giants twice, once in that game and once in the playoffs.
Chad Hensley (Luray, VA)
Who do you see as the surprise cut in Dallas? Stanbach doesn't count.
Mosley (12:11 PM)
I don't really see any surprises. I'm trying to think of a vet. There's not a cut that will floor you in this division. I mean would Brown or Baskett surprise anyone?
brad (GA)
What Beast team has looked the best over this preseason?
Mosley (12:12 PM)
I haven't been particularly impressed with any of the teams in the preseason. I guess the Cowboys' first-teamers have looked pretty solid the last couple games. I don't get caught up in the preseason too much. A lot of teams are sort of hiding stuff.
J.R. ((Dallas, TX))
BeastMaster, Happy Tkabbin Day. Who is better? Stephen Bowen or Marcus Dixon?
Mosley (12:12 PM)
If he does it 40 percent of the time, the Cowboys will be pleased.
J.R. ((Dallas, TX))
BeastMaster, Will the Cowboys keep Ryan Gibbons on the 53-man roster or on the practice team?
Mosley (12:12 PM)
May try to get him to the practice squad. But if Procter doesn't make the team, Gibbons could slip in there.
Shawn (Plainview, Long Island)
Hey Matt, how many receivers do you think the Giants will use in Game 1 against the Skins? How big a role do you think Hicks will get early in the season
Mosley (12:13 PM)
Hicks is making his case right now. He'll be in the rotation. Smith and Hixon will start. And Manningham will be the third guy. But Nicks and Barden might be the next guys in line.
B (NC)
Matt, is Feagles too old to hit the Godzillatron, or will we start the ongoing controversy in week 2?
Mosley (12:13 PM)
I don't think he'll hit it.
Jim (Montclair, NJ)
A lot of emphasis has been put on converting in the "green zone" for the G-men this year. Do you think they can get guys like Ramses Barden to step up and contribute?
Mosley (12:14 PM)
I think he could be a major threat in the green zone. Barden has unique skills to go along with his 6-6 frame. So yes, he'll be an immediate weapon in that area.
Dave (Philly)
Is there any chance an NFC East team brings in T.J. Duckett? I think the birds could use him to actually RUN the ball inside the 5 instead of always trying to throw for TD's. If not Philly, where are some places Duckett could end up?
Mosley (12:14 PM)
Haven't heard anything about him coming to the Beast
Keith (Ashburn, VA)
Provided Jason Campbell doesn't lead the team to the playoffs this year he won't be back next year. Do you see another team actually bringing him in as a starter or would his best case scenario be a chance to start somewhere else?
Mosley (12:16 PM)
It sort of depends how he plays. He could have a nice season stats wise and the Skins could still miss the playoffs. If he becomes a free agent, there will be a team that tries to give him a shot to win a job in camp. Jacksonville has to be getting tired of Garrard's act and Tampa Bay always needs a quarterback. Will Orton still be the man in Denver? I think not.
Mike (NJ)
Matty..Giants trimmed their roster to 74 today any chance Harrisons on the way?
Mosley (12:16 PM)
I have not heard that, no.
Jackie (Jonesboro)
Do you see Buckley and Gibson making the Eagles roster? I saw some bad ball handling from Buckley but besides that he looks pretty effective. Do you think he makes the cut over Booker? Gibson has played too well not to make the team. I think they keep him and Baskett and lose Brown. What about you?
Mosley (12:17 PM)
Gibson for sure. And probably Buckley. They may be able to get Eldra on the practice squad -- even as good as he's looked at times.
Thom (Shippensburg PA)
Marcus Mason? Replaces Betts? Feelings?
Mosley (12:18 PM)
yep, he's on the verge of replacing Betts. He's just a better change of pace guy than Betts, who gets banged up quite a bit.
aasimon (DC)
Personally, I saw the single most important person to the recent success of the Eagles pass away (RIP -- and yes, he was more important than McNabb, as they twice made the playoffs without him), both the Eagles and Giants dropping personnel like flies, and both of them showing signs of drama with some pretty crucial players (McNabb and Osi). You don't need preseason film to know that affects their former offseason outlook.
Mosley (12:19 PM)
Solid points, aasimon. But the Giants and Eagles have both shown they can overcome adversity.
RayRay (DC)
Case for Chase (Daniel) or Cult of Colt (Brennan)?
Mosley (12:20 PM)
Give me Chase Daniel. I think he protects the ball better and he seems to get the ball out quickly. I sense that Z loves him.
Sam (Chicago, IL)
Hi Matt:I immensely enjoy your chats. Question: Watching the Redskins / Pats game on Friday, it seemed that the Redskins had difficulty getting to Brady. Do you attribute this to the strength of the Patriot's offensive line or is the Redskins' defensive line overrated?
Mosley (12:20 PM)
thanks, Sam. I don't read too much into the preseason. The Pats have a good offensive line, but it's not like Blache was playing a lot of games at the line of scrimmage in a preseason game. Too early to worry. Wait until after the first real game.
Tom (Dallas, TX)
Jenkins or Scandrick...who wins the starter role??
Mosley (12:21 PM)
Jenkins wins it, but Scandrick's the better player. Cows have a bigger investment in Jenkins, so they'll go with him. Not saying that's right.
RAY GORDONREID ( NEWARK NJ O7102)
QUESTION TO MATT MOSLEY AT 12.40 HI MATT WILL OSI PLAY AGAINST NEWENGLAND AFTERWHAT HAPPEN IN CAMP YESTERDAY
Mosley (12:22 PM)
I doubt you'll see many of the starters. Maybe for a series or two tops. You don't send a message by sitting a guy down for a preseason game. Coughlin needs to bench him for the start of the Skins game -- in my opinion.
mark (nyc)
which 7th round picks have the best chance to make an impact this year for a team in the beast?
Mosley (12:23 PM)
Well, I'm a huge fan of Eagles LB Moise Fokou. Looks like he could make an immediate impact. And the Skins hit on Marko Mitchell late.
Keith (Ashburn, VA)
Ogletree has looked good in the preseason so far. He appears to be a lock to make the team. With Romo's apparent trust in him what are his chances of moving up the depth chart? It's not like Austin
Mosley (12:24 PM)
Not a good sign at all. Sometimes even the team leaders make a mistake. Sounds like Umenyiora got his feelings hurt and did something he quickly regretted. Not a good thing, but I don't think it will have a lingering effect on the team or anything.
Esan (College Station)
Love the blog Matt. Your thoughts on the cowboys secondary and giving up the big plays on defense?
Mosley (12:24 PM)
I'm worried about the lack of depth at corner. If Newman or one of the other guys goes down, the Cowboys have to look to Alan Ball. Uh oh!!!
B (NC)
Matt, Osi does not need to be benched at all. Plax was a habitual offender and it took a hell of a lot more than what Osi did before they sat him down. Just fine him and move on.
Mosley (12:25 PM)
I hear you, but what kind of message does that send to the rest of the team. That a star player can walk out because he gets criticized by an assistant. A fine doesn't cut it for me.
Robert (MD)
How do you like Romo's fantasy value this season minus Owens?
Mosley (12:25 PM)
He'll put up big numbers. He always does.
Tom (Coon Rapids, MN)
The Giants defense has been shaky at best this preseason. What does your crystal ball tell you about how they will do this year?
Mosley (12:27 PM)
I think they'll get it going in October and I think Umenyiora and Tuck will combine for 24 sacks, which is about where DeMarcus Ware could end up. If the Giants' depth ever shows up, they'll be scary. I'm not that worried about them. Still the best team in the Beast at this point.
Elvis Presley (Burger Joint)
Barden should see some more touches against the Pats, Do you think he can show some Moss prototype skills ?
Mosley (12:28 PM)
He's not even in Moss' league right now, so I hate to make any type comparison. Barden has unbelievable size and he appears to have exceptional body control. I'm looking forward to seeing how he does in the final warmup for the season.
Brad (GA)
Which players do you think will be fantasy studs coming out of the BEAST this year?
Mosley (12:29 PM)
D-Jack, Westbrook (I have them both on my team), Romo, McNabb, Giants D, Jacobs, Felix, Barber and Hakeem Nicks is a good sleeper pick.
McNabb (Philly)
Why do think theres goin to be a problem with Vick in Philly this year? Are you just a Vick HATER Matt?
Mosley (12:31 PM)
No, certainly not a Vick hater. I just know that Vick is young and talented enough to not think of himself as a backup. At some point this season, McNabb will play poorly for a stretch. And fans will be begging for Vick. Just saying there's a potential controversy -- and I think there's been some naive coverage of this story from the some in the national media.
Joe (NJ)
Chances the beast sends 3 teams to the playoffs this yr?
Mosley (12:31 PM)
would not surprise me one bit.
Rigidy (Hartford)
Any chance we will get to see Eli on the field with Nicks and Barden for a couple of series in the final preseason game?
Mosley (12:32 PM)
A chance, but I wouldn't risk it.
Alex (Silver Spring)
From what you've seen, and what you're hearing, rank the following receivers: Ogletree, Marko Mitchell, Ramses Barden
Mosley (12:32 PM)
1. Barden2. Mitchell3. Ogletree
pjguru (College Station)
If defensive coordinators around the league could contain Vick when he was in Atlanta then why can't they do it now? Is it because Wildcat formations were not used at that time or is it because he is in a much better team now than he was before?
Mosley (12:34 PM)
I don't think defensive coordinators around the league necessarily "contained" Vick. He was one of the most dangerous offensive players in the game. All the Wildcat does is provide a completely different threat to the defense. They don't spend as much time preparing for it, so there can be some problems. Even the great Belichick struggled to slow it down last season.
Pink Floyd (Dark Side)
We haven't seen the Giants smash mouth style this preseason . Do you think Eli is looking for better stats this year ?
Mosley (12:34 PM)
I don't think Eli cares about stats. But I do think the Giants would like to hit on more big plays. For that to happen, Steve Smith and Dom Hixon have to hang onto some passes.
danny (skin spy in philly)
if the skins go 8-8 again, what are the chances they draft with the 15th pick again, a certain QB from *cough* texas, and have the best defensive player and the best QB texas has ever had, funny that it would be the redskins. thoughts?
Mosley (12:36 PM)
Until Colt wins a national title, I think Vince Young should keep the best ever title. And don't sleep on James Street. But yes, I'm sure the Skins would be in the market for a QB. And Bradford would likely be their first choice.
Steve (PA)
Would you have flagged Hanyesworth for his hit against Brady?
Mosley (12:36 PM)
Nah.
Jon (new york)
what do you think the giants should do about that free safety position since michael johnson and cc brown have looked awful so far in preseason?
Mosley (12:37 PM)
Michael Johnson has performed well on the big stage. I think he'll be fine. C.C. Brown may not have what it takes.
Young Bear (Waco, TX)
Big12 Q: Can Baylor upset UT or OU this season? Is this the year?? Sic'em!!
Mosley (12:38 PM)
Young Bear:Let's worry about knocking off Texas Tech or OSU before we focus on the big guns. And I think the Ags at Kyle Field can still be tough.
Matt (TX)
If Romo has another poor December and doesnt make the playoffs or doesn't get a playoff win do you think that Jones will begin looking for another QB
Mosley (12:39 PM)
Jerry Jones wrote the man a $30 million check. We're not to the point where he's in do or die mode with Romo, no.
Lennon (Oneonta, NY )
Matt huge fan of the blog...Do you think David Tyree is waiver wire fodder come Sunday morning?
Mosley (12:39 PM)
He's a goner.
Anthony (Cali)
you think Stanback and Ogletree both make the team?
Mosley (12:39 PM)
Nope, just Ogletree
chris (brooklyn, ny)
How has Eli looked to you this preseason? That bomb he threw to Smith was on the the money.
Mosley (12:41 PM)
He's looked fine to me. Just trying to get on same page with all the young guys.
Mosley (12:41 PM)
He's looked fine to me. Just trying to get on same page with all the young guys.
Eliana (NYC)
Longtime reader and Redskins fan, Mr. Mosely! Todd Collins...better than Jason Campbell? I know that you're a Campbell fan, but he has less than proved himself this preseason. Do you think the Redskins will do the right thing and let Collins start (let me remind you that Collins led the Redskins to the postseason)? Do you think they might give up on Campbell and focus on developing Brennan/Daniels? Do you think Dan and Vinny will simply draft a new QB? Thanks!
Mosley (12:43 PM)
He's looked fine to me. Just trying to get on same page with all the young guys.
Jerry (TX)
Why would you start Devin Thomas opposite Moss, over Malcolm Kelly?
Mosley (12:47 PM)
Oops, computer froze. I'm back now. I like Kelly. Love his maturity. Thomas is more of a deep threat. Great size, too.
Rob (Lake Worth, FL)
If you were Dan Snyder and the Redskins go 8-8 again this year, would you fire Zorn and Campbell or try to give them a better Offensive line? What are the chances Snyder would agree with you?
Mosley (12:48 PM)
I fear both of them will be gone if the Skins go 8-8 again.
Maurice (DC)
Hey Matt, how do you feel about the Redskins putting Albert Haynesworth at the right defensive end position and putting Orakpo at the left end position during passing downs, they did that with some success (injuring Tom Brady).
Mosley (12:49 PM)
I applaud anything that confuses the opposing team. I think Greg Blache has a lot of tricks up his sleeve. He has the most dominant defensive tackle in the game. Might as well move him around and see how he responds.
Jake (Brooklyn)
Nicks and Manningham starting after the Bye Week? What odds would you give?
Mosley (12:49 PM)
I would say Nicks over Manningham.
SkinsFanNJ (NJ)
Matt, Love the Beast. Do you think Orakpo can really have success as a rookie and make an impact? Will the Redskins be able to bring pressure this year?
Mosley (12:50 PM)
I think Orakpo could end up with 11 sacks. Seriously. He's not in awe of the big stage.
Mosley (12:51 PM)
I think the Eagles have to figure out who Michael Vick is after being out of the league for two season. By the time McNabb's deal is up, Vick will be close to 32. And the Eagles have an option on the 2010 season on Vick. Let this thing play out.
Matt (Charlotte)
Hey Matt, what injuries, if any, should Giants fans be ready come the start of the season? It seems like everyone's been down at some point but other than Boley is there anyone else that won't be there week 1?
Mosley (12:52 PM)
I'm a little concerned about Ross at this point, but I think he'll start the game. Canty's the guy who's not making progress. Those are two potential starters to keep an eye on.
chris (brooklyn, ny)
Was Stoney Woodson released because of his injury? I thought he looked better than Deandre Wright during the preseason games.
Mosley (12:53 PM)
I thought he did too, Chris. Probably his injury did the trick. And he wasn't taking his solid training camp play into the preseason games.
Jeff T (Plano, TX)
After Favres performance last night, it is looking pretty good for the purple to at WORSE case, be in it until the end of every game, doesn't it?
Mosley (12:53 PM)
That's a playoff team with Favre
B (NC)
Matt - FYI Canty seems to be responding well to the plasma therapy and has been on the practice field the last few days.
Mosley (12:54 PM)
There's a difference between doing some work on the practice field and playing in a game, though.
Darrick Knight (Durham,NC)
I think the Eagles made the right Decision putting Gaither at MLB. I don't know what happen to Mays.
Mosley (12:55 PM)
Mays will be OK. I think the Eagles felt more comfortable with a former starter. And I think Gaither will seize the opportunity. Geez, you guys have been unbelievable today. I think we're going to surpass 500 questions.
Darrick Knight (Durham,NC)
Matt, what is the deal with Portis. He is looking real slow out there.
Mosley (12:56 PM)
I wouldn't worry about that. Once the regular season begins, you'll see him run downhill. Zorn has to protect him from the pounding this season. And line needs to stay healthy. He's still one of the better runners in the league when his body's right.
Darrick Knight (Durham,NC)
If you where the Eagles would you trade Feeley to the Patriots.
Mosley (12:56 PM)
Sure, if you could get something decent for him.
Dave (Charlotte, NC)
Matt, do you think its important that Todd Collins gets some reps this Thursday? Cause we wont see Chase or Colt this year. I say start Collins for a quarter and have Chase/Colt go rest of way. Or do you think its more important to see Chase/Colt as early as possible with some 1st and 2nd teamers. After seeing Campbell fri night I dont think theres too much to gain for sending him out for one series. Your thoughts?
Mosley (12:57 PM)
Nah, we know all we need to know about Collins.
Dave (Charlotte, NC)
Matt, were you also disappointed with the lack of pressure the Skins D-line put on Brady friday night? Haynesworth was getting double/triple teamed and everyone else was getting beat 1 on 1. They couldn't even pressure Brady when they blitzed, and he burned them for it. Pats o-line that great or a bad night for Skins D-line?
Mosley (12:57 PM)
Didn't bother me. Blache not showing much.
Darrick Knight (Durham,NC)
Matt, do you think this is the real Shawn Andrews? Do you think he play at his pro-bowl level again.
Mosley (12:57 PM)
If you keep him on the field for a season, he's a Pro Bowl talent. I don't know if that will happen, though.
Dave (Charlotte, NC)
Matt,Who now has the best chance to take the Split End spot at Washington between Malcolm Kelly and Devin Thomas? I find myself more and more wanting Malcolm Kelly to be that player. Do you still rank DT ahead of him?
Mosley (12:58 PM)
I'm a big fan of Kelly's, but Thomas has more big-play ability.
Matt (NYC)
Do you think Deshaun Jackson will end up being the best WR in the NFC East this season? Is 9 or more tds a realistic expectation?
Mosley (12:58 PM)
1. DeSean2. Santana
preston (nc)
whats up matt, i just want to let you know i really enjoy your blogs, i think you do a great job of being real. but onto my question i am a die hard cowboys fan and i remember you saying you see us finishing 9-7, do you still feel we will finish with that record i think another win would do some justice. do you see the playoffs this year maybe. i think the giants are in a rough spot cause the only reliable parts of their team are the defense and o-line oh and mister jacobs, the eagles might be in over there head with the whole vick thing and the defense isn't what it used to be, and washington well besides their defense and mister portis, well enough said. My best friend is an eagles fan to the core do you see us beating them and my cousin keeps hollerin his team the panthers are going to beat us, with who and what army what do you think? thanks matt keep up the great work.
Mosley (12:59 PM)
Thanks, Preston! I could see the Cowboys getting 10 wins -- especially with that schedule. I could see the Giants, Eagles and Cowboys all having 10 wins or more.
Jason (NYC)
I read somewhere that the reason Duckett hasn't been signed yet is because as a vet in the league his entire contract for 2009 would be guaranteed if he is on a roster for week 1. Do you know if this is true, and regardless, what are some of the places you think TJ might sign? Thanks!
Mosley (1:00 PM)
That sounds about right to me.
Kevin (Toms River, NJ)
Hey Matt, Do you think people are over hyping the Giants/Jets games where some Giants WRs dropped passes. I mean I keep hearing things about Steve Smith, yes he dropped a pass, but we all know he has excellent hands, but people are forgetting that. Its the preseason, this is the time to get the drops out of your system.
Mosley (1:02 PM)
I think Steve Smith has issues catching balls over his shoulder -- and that's not good. Yes, it's good it happened in a game that didn't count, but it still has to give you pause. You guys have been tremendous today. Let's do it again next week. And thanks for showing up early today. There were 72 questions in the pipeline when I sat down. Thanks to the great Jeremy Dominick for overseeing this chat. Have a wonderful day. It's mid-80s in Dallas -- in August! I'm headed outside.
