The Talented Mr, Roto - Matthew Berry (2:59 PM)
What's up kids? mostly football today but we'll answer all subjects. As always, you can follwo me on twitter as @TheRealTMR. Let's get it on
Jake (Ithaca NY)
Clinton Portis had nowhere to run Sunday. Giants defense that good? OR Washington run game that bad? Supposed to be an improved line
The Talented Mr, Roto - Matthew Berry (3:00 PM)
NYG D that good. I thought Portis looked fine... he should get ALL better in week 2 vs. STL. Don't panic.
CAPTAIN OBVIOUS (EVERYWHERE)
so we should obviously sell-high on Peterson, Brees and Wayne and buy low on Andre 3000, Forte, and Delhomme right?
The Talented Mr, Roto - Matthew Berry (3:04 PM)
No, don't think you can sell high on Brees, AP or Wayne - think all are legit. Obviously, they are not going to thrwo 6 TD or run for 3 every week. But I had Brees as my #1 QB, AP as my #2 RB and Wayne as a top 7 WR. All are legit and I can't imagine what you'd get for them to make it worth trading them. Buy low on Andre, yeah, but Cutler had 0 passes to Forte. I'm slightly concerned about that. Mark Schlereth talked about this very subject on our fantasy preview show. He's down on Forts because Cutler doesn't check down to the RB
William (NY)
Matthew, what does Michael Turner's horrible performance tell you about the rest of the fantasy season fo him? Will he really suffer from the curse of 370? Thanks.
John (Chicago)
Turner over AP?
The Talented Mr, Roto - Matthew Berry (3:07 PM)
Look, it's one week. I stand by the Turner over AP call. I had AP as my #1 rb in last week's (the week one) rankings. And he'll be #1 for week 2 vs DET. But I still believe Turner finishes year with more points than AP. Last year, after week 1, DeAngelo Williams had 8 points. Not worried about Slaton, Portis, Jacobs, DAW, Chris Johnson, etc...
Don (San Francisco)
Big Ben or Flacco? A week-to-week decision?
The Talented Mr, Roto - Matthew Berry (3:11 PM)
Never say never, but I'd prefer to have Flacco most weeks. Depends on the match-up but PIT had a 43-23 pass to run ratio in week one and I don't think you'll see that very much. Ben didn't do much until late in the game. But yeah, ultimately it's a match-up play. Flacco is a better runner and will give you more points via his feet before season is over too.
Ryan (SF)
Does Pierre Thomas get his spot back when healthy or does Bell's good performance against the weak Lions steal him the spot?
The Talented Mr, Roto - Matthew Berry (3:15 PM)
It will be still be Pierre's gig but Bell will figure into the mix with 10 to 12 touches a game. Rather have Bell than Bush in a non PPR lg, I'll say that
Nick (New York)
Before you said you aren't worried about DAW, but yesterday him and Stewart basically spilt carries before the game got out of hand and Stewart got the first 3 cracks at the end zone.
The Talented Mr, Roto - Matthew Berry (3:16 PM)
Yeah, Stewart will have value as long as he is healthy. He DID score 10 touchdowns last year. But DAW is the better RB and will get plenty of touches. Both will have value this year, espceially since they can't pass.
Greg Olsen (Chicago)
Why didn't I get any Cutler love Sunday?
The Talented Mr, Roto - Matthew Berry (3:17 PM)
Green Bay went out it's way to defend you, which is why the outside was open for Hester, Bennett, etc. Don't worry.
Noah (NYC)
You concerned about the o-line in front of Matt Schaub, or is Rex Ryan's defensive scheme that good?
The Talented Mr, Roto - Matthew Berry (3:18 PM)
Jets are that good. They used a lot of different formations and threw a bunch of stuff at Houston that they won't see on a normal basis.
Ryan (FL)
Cutler vs Steelers or Favre vs Lions this week?
The Talented Mr, Roto - Matthew Berry (3:18 PM)
Favre.
Drew Brees Owner (Champaign)
Hey Matthew, I'm in my human sexuality class right now talking fantasy football. Is that weird? Anyways, I'm torn on this trade. We start 3 WR in our league and I'm not fond of any of my options there. I'm considering trading Drew Brees, Ahmad Bradshaw, and Dustin Keller for Matt Ryan, Vincent Jackson/TJ Houshmanzadeh (my choice), and Tony Gonzalez. Also, Nate Burleson and Zach Miller are available on the WW. Can you help me out?
The Talented Mr, Roto - Matthew Berry (3:22 PM)
That is one crappy class then. I would not do that deal. The upgrade at WR is not worth giving up Brees. Especially for Ryan, who will be a middle of the road fantasy QB this year. I like Keller quite a bit and Bradshaw has been very underrated this year. Like Both Burlson and Miller as FA as well.
Kevin Kolb (Philly)
How bad is McNabb hurt? Should I look to Orton (v. CLE) or Sanchez (v. NE) as a better replacement next week and for the year?
The Talented Mr, Roto - Matthew Berry (3:24 PM)
Right now they are saying he is going to try and play in wk2 but even if he's a go, I'm not crazy about him. He may get injured again, they will probably limit the playbook... too iffy. I like Orton more than Sanchez, but consider Flacco, Shaun Hill (vs SEA) and believe it or not, Jason Campbell at home to STL.
Chris (Charlotte, NC)
Who should I replace Anthony Gonzalez with: Collie, Garcon, Steve Smith (NYG) or Hixon
The Talented Mr, Roto - Matthew Berry (3:24 PM)
Stev Smith. Like Collie more than Garcon among INDY guys, but Smith looks to be the #1 in NY
Justin (Sterling, VA)
Hey Matthew,I am down by 25 in my one league and I have both the Chargers and the Patriots defense. I know that it is not looking good, but which one has a better chance of putting up a ton of pts tonight?
The Talented Mr, Roto - Matthew Berry (3:25 PM)
Can I take the middle? He'll get more involved than he was bbut he won't be a PPR stud or anything.
Mike (Ohio)
True or False: You are chatting today in order to steal some of Simmons' thunder on ESPNboston day.
The Talented Mr, Roto - Matthew Berry (3:26 PM)
Monday's at 3pm is my normal chat time. I could never steal thunder from Bill. He is a much bigger draw than me, esp for BOS fans.
Matt (Phildelphia)
Well done with you love/hate column this week TMR. Wish I listened to it and sat Steve Smith. Will Smith and Delhomme be OK going forward?
The Talented Mr, Roto - Matthew Berry (3:32 PM)
Sorry, was getting other questions cued up. Ok, Smith will be o.k. I'd be lying if I said I didn't have an eyebrow raised and a little bit of concern. But ATL has trouble playing the pass on the outside, so I expect Smith to be ok in week 2. Delhomme - ugh. But he'll be better too.
Adam (Chicago)
Santonio Holmes a legit WR2 now? Over Braylon or Berrian?
The Talented Mr, Roto - Matthew Berry (3:34 PM)
Yes. Def over Braylon thanks to Brady and right now, over Berrian. Long term, no, I like Berrian more. Berrian has missed time so he doesn't have a ton of rapport with Favre. But he'll turn it on soon.
Mark (CT)
What happened to your Sunday night/Monday morning football blog about the games? I loved reading it. Please tell me you're bringing it back.
The Talented Mr, Roto - Matthew Berry (3:36 PM)
Thanks. I am not. Only so many hours in the day and it was decided among me and my editors that it wasn't a priority among all the other stuff I am doing. But Tristan Cockroft has "Instant Replay" -a great recap of everything you need to know. I recommend it.
Kevin (VT)
Quikc baseball question: Werth or Ibanez? THanks!
The Talented Mr, Roto - Matthew Berry (3:36 PM)
Werth
Joe (St. Louis)
McGahhe legit? Drop him for Cadillac?
The Talented Mr, Roto - Matthew Berry (3:38 PM)
Yes and yes. Look, McGahee WON'T get 2 TD every week but he will be involved on the goaline for a good running team. That said, I'd rather have Cadillac, who looked terrific. That team is going to run
Pete (Boston)
It's a little weird listening to your podcast while reading your chat.. Kind of like eating a ham sandwich while walking your pet pig... I have Garrard with no backup... Leinart a better speculative grab for backup QB than Campbell Stafford or S Hill?
The Talented Mr, Roto - Matthew Berry (3:39 PM)
So what? I'm your fantasy pig? Is that what you are saying? Huh?I think Hill will actually be solid this year. They play SEA at home next week, which is a decent match-up. Hill was top 10 in pass yds and TD passes over 2nd half of last year, fyi.
eric (oakland)
you starting wandy @ cincinnati??
The Talented Mr, Roto - Matthew Berry (3:40 PM)
yep
Tim (Indy)
Any buy low WR out there besides Andre Johnson?
The Talented Mr, Roto - Matthew Berry (3:41 PM)
Roddy, Royal and Marshall (Orton was wearing a glove and CIN D better than folks think. They were upper half vs. pass last year), Bowe and Boldin.
* (Cleveland)
Per Tristan's terrific OUT OF THE BOX, could you please place me after GRADY SIZEMORE'S name for my playoff owners that could sure use the bench spot? Thank you.
The Talented Mr, Roto - Matthew Berry (3:43 PM)
Hah. That's funny. Look, here's the problem. he is not on the DL. I know - he's out for the year. But that's the rule we play by. If he is not on the MLB DL, he can't be placed in IR spot. It's a wide ranging rule that needs to be hardfast because it crosses all leagues, formats, keeper, non keeper, etc etc. Your complain needs to be lobbed at the Indians front office
Percy Harvin (Minneapolis)
Do you play me over Antonio Bryant week 2? 6 points for a KR TD baby!!
The Talented Mr, Roto - Matthew Berry (3:44 PM)
Against Detroit? Yeah. My ranks will be out on WED and then updated again on FRI, just like the rest of the ESPN staff.
Roy (Denver)
Who do you want the rest of the way... Parker, Bell or FJax?
The Talented Mr, Roto - Matthew Berry (3:44 PM)
Parker. Think he's a good buy low, actually.
Shane (Oklahoma City)
Selling Cedric Benson high?
The Talented Mr, Roto - Matthew Berry (3:45 PM)
Nope. He was top 8 in the NFL in rush yards over second half last year. He's better than you think.
Ryan (Los Angeles)
Should I be worried that bernard didnt catch 1 pass in week 1?
The Talented Mr, Roto - Matthew Berry (3:45 PM)
No. Again, he probably shouldn't have been playing and thanks to AP/AD, they didn't need to throw
Tex ((Louisville))
Who are some good buy low RBs after this week?
The Talented Mr, Roto - Matthew Berry (3:46 PM)
Any of them. It was an ugly week for RB
Chris (Mich)
Ray rice or Cedric benson
The Talented Mr, Roto - Matthew Berry (3:48 PM)
Rice, but it's closer than you think. This is what I was talking about in the pre-season about guys like Benson, Jamal Lewis, Julius Jones. Guys like Rice have all the hype but there are "ugly" un-sexy names that will be productive that you can get many rounds later
Joe (Princeton NJ)
Joseph Addai....got faith in him for the rest of the season?
The Talented Mr, Roto - Matthew Berry (3:48 PM)
You've clearly never owned Joseph Addai.
Ryan (SF)
Free the flex rankings!!!!
The Talented Mr, Roto - Matthew Berry (3:50 PM)
Not my decision. But, in all seriousness.... Insider is like $39.95. That's 11 cents a day. 11 cents. And you can try it for free for a month. It's not very much and you get a TON of stuff. O, hey, buy a RotoPass - which includes Insider - for a bit more. And you can use the promo code ESPN for 10% off. (of RotoPass)
Willy (St. Paul)
Is Julius Jones a legit #2RB or was this just one long run against a bad defense?
The Talented Mr, Roto - Matthew Berry (3:51 PM)
Little bit of both. I'm more comfortable with him as a #3, but do think he's legit. Yes, it was a long run but he's who they got and they will run.
Jon (KC)
Which do you love more FOR THE YEAR...Flacco or Garrard?
The Talented Mr, Roto - Matthew Berry (3:51 PM)
Flacco
Trevor (Ft. Walton Beach)
Joe Flacco is a top__ QB this season?
The Talented Mr. Roto - Matthew Berry (3:52 PM)
Last Flacoc question. In my "You Heard Me!" bold predictions I said Flacco would be top 12 amnd I see no reason to alter that AFTER Sunday.Of course, I also said Anthony Gonzalez would have over 1200 yards. THAT ain't happening...
James (SF)
Hi Matthew, I read your stuff on ESPN regularly. If there is one criticism of your articles I have, it's that you tend to pat yourself on the back too much, and are very stubborn when admitting you're wrong. I know the season is long, but after witnessing week 1, are you prepared to now admit you were wrong in ranking Turner ahead of AP?
The Talented Mr. Roto - Matthew Berry (3:53 PM)
I'm not wrong! What are you talking about!! I swear I'm not stubborn!! No, really! I'm not!
The Talented Mr. Roto - Matthew Berry (3:57 PM)
Honeslty, I disagree. I do enjoy pointing out good calls, but I'm also very upfront about admitting wrong calls and printing criticism / hate mail. I also have ESPN Conversation pages on my columns (not everyone does), where folks can say whatever they want about my columns / picks (and often do).Nate and I spent a good week on our baseball podcast talking about what was my worst call of the year (Joe Mauer, in case you were interested, seems to be the winner). All that said - no, I'm not willing to admit I was wrong on Turner. As I said at top - it's one week. I had Peterson at #1 last week (for week 1) and I will next week vs. DET. But I still maintain that Turner finishes with more fantasy points than AP at end of the year for all the reasons I laid out when I first wrote it.
rob (sc)
Hey TMR,you said you'd take all questions. After Kuroda's performance Saturday, are you using him the rest of the year?
The Talented Mr. Roto - Matthew Berry (3:57 PM)
No
Jeremy (Boston)
Dbag 2009: Kanye or Farve?
The Talented Mr. Roto - Matthew Berry (3:58 PM)
Kanye for 2009. Favre has lifetime achivement award and is ineligible for voting in 09
Mike (Boston)
Hola Matteo. Como Estas? We all know about your hate for Ronnie Brown. He only got 10 carries last game and Williams got 7.. Do you see this kind of split being a season long thing?
The Talented Mr. Roto - Matthew Berry (3:59 PM)
To an extent, but not that extreme. MIA was just trying to get anything going. Brown should be better next Monday at home vs. INDY
Daniel (New York)
BOOOO THE TMR, WE WANT THE TRUM!!
jay (london)
what about being wrong about verlander?
The Talented Mr. Roto - Matthew Berry (4:00 PM)
Yeah, that was discussed. Another bad call.
dan (Boston, MA)
Thomas Jones ended up with a solid line, but if you watched the game, you didn't come away impressed. Am I selling high on T Jones today?
The Talented Mr. Roto - Matthew Berry (4:00 PM)
Disagree. Looked bad in first half. I think it's legit. Great O line, run first team... first game is always tough because they are not used to playing a full game.
Adam (Colorado)
Mendenhall worth keeping?
The Talented Mr. Roto - Matthew Berry (4:01 PM)
Only if you need him as a handcuff to FWP
Mike (Los Angeles)
Let's be honest TMR - Kanye was right that Beyonce's video was better than Taylor's. He just didn't pick the right way to present that fact.
The Talented Mr. Roto - Matthew Berry (4:02 PM)
Presentation is often the key to everything. I am exhibit A for that.
The Talented Mr. Roto - Matthew Berry (4:02 PM)
Gotta run. I'll be on SC on ESPN in 48 minutes so I gotta write the script, get in make-up and throw on a tie and jacket. Thanks for popping by. Good luck tonight!
