Dan Rafael (12:08 PM)
Greetings Fight Freaks. After spending most of last week in Las Vegas for Mayweather-Marquez, and then coming home for a few days, I'm now in Los Angeles for Saturday's Vitali Klitschko-Cris Arreola fight. Should be an exciting heavyweight fight while it lasts. There is much to discuss. I hope you have seen the features on this fight and this week's new blogs and updated p4p and divisional rankings. Let's get to it.
J.M. Marquez (Mexico City)
I should've drank more piss
JEREMY M. (PITTSBURGH, PA)
Hey Dan,You got a round picked for Klitchko to win?I'm leaning towards the 4th...
Dan Rafael (12:08 PM)
I think you are in the ballpark. I am thinking 6-7 rounds.
Rick (Marina)
Whats up Dan, 1 million buys, does that mean the beard is coming off?
Dan Rafael (12:09 PM)
I did say I would do it. But I also said I would do it if ESPN provided the platform. I wouldn't want to lose it without the Freaks being able to see I am a man of my word.
Christopher (Staten Island)
Need a razor?
Dan Rafael (12:10 PM)
It looks that way.
Brett (Northern Virginia)
Danno,Could you please explain why everyone considers Areola to be such a big underdog against Klitchko? I know the conditioning piece, but...solid amateur background and he's a heavyweight that punches in great combinations and moves well for his size. Thanks.
Dan Rafael (12:11 PM)
The thought is this: Cris is a hard puncher and a guy with heart, but has never faced a legitimately dangerous opponent. Vitali has a great chin (never down), great experience and has been looking great his past two fights since coming back. He also has a height and reach advantage and is a better technical fighter. It's an uphill battle for Arreola and he and his team know it it.
JP (Columbus, OH)
Don't worry DTM, it's just hair. It grows back.
Dan Rafael (12:11 PM)
I know.
j (marlton)
any word who clottey is going t fight on dec 5
Dan Rafael (12:12 PM)
Still TBA. Top Rank is talking about opponents, but nothing is set.
Mark (Brooksville, Fla.)
Dan,I have read reports, your's included, that states the Mayweather vs Marquez fight did over a million buys. Will you be televising the shaving of your beard and hair? And if the answer is yes, could you let us know the time and date etc,???
Dan Rafael (12:12 PM)
I'll let you know.
Tom (Reading, United Kingdom)
When will Jorge Linares make his American debut? Has Golden Boy given any indication on who they hope to match him up with?
Dan Rafael (12:13 PM)
Linares fights in Japan on Oct. 10. After that, his next bout is expected to be in the US on a Golden Boy card. As for a specific opponent or date, it has not gotten that far yet.
Eric (North Hollywood)
Know you loved the trunks on Chris John.
Dan Rafael (12:14 PM)
I did. Chris is a big Gatti fan and showed tribute to the fallen Gatti with his trunk last week. Classy move.
Max Kellerman (In the ring Las Vegas)
Jim, Jim , somebody help
Dan Rafael (12:14 PM)
LOL! That made me laugh.
Eric (North Hollywood)
Check this link before anyone even asks Dan about an update on Kirkland or you'll be banned: http://sports.espn.go.com/sports/boxing/news/story?id=4498236
Dan Rafael (12:15 PM)
Thanks for the help.
Julio (Seoul)
What is your opinion on Izzy Vasquez continuing with his career despite his eye surgery? Can you see him come back and actually be able to compete with the likes of Lopez, Gamboa or Caballero?
Dan Rafael (12:16 PM)
Izzy is medically cleared. The docs know better than I do. I saw Israel last night at the Fight Night Club show. He was smiling and seemed happy to be able to get back to work. I have no idea how he will look after the injuries, the tough fights with Marquez and the long layoff. We won't have a clue until we see him in a real fight.
Joe (LA)
Why do you think the PPV sold so well?
Dan Rafael (12:17 PM)
I think there are a lot of factors. There hasn't been a big ppv since May, so there was pent up demand. You hit both most significant markets -- urban America buying to see Floyd and the Hispanics watching their No. 1 active guy in Marquez, and those markets don't really overlap. On top of that, you had the comeback factor of Mayweather back after 21 months. And you had a massive, massive marketing blitz from Golden Boy, HBO and all of the A-list sponsors for the event. It was a perfect storm.
Steve (Hartford )
Do you think MArquez should go to 140 or back to lightweight to defend his crown?
Dan Rafael (12:18 PM)
Whichever division has the most lucrative fight for him.
Brian (DC)
Can we make a rule... no Juarez title shots until at least 2011?
Dan Rafael (12:18 PM)
Agreed.
Horn (Vegas)
Are the Klitschkos the only heavies that remain in shape on a consistent basis? I mean Vitali is 38 years old. They are the blueprint of how heavyweights should conduct themselves. The Klitschkos deserve more respect stateside.
Dan Rafael (12:19 PM)
Both of them have always been in tremendous condition for their fights. They are true professionals. I agree that they often have not gotten the respect they deserve from US fans and media.
Chris (Appleton, WI)
Is there any word on how well the theatre showings for Mayweather vs. Marquez did?
Dan Rafael (12:20 PM)
I am told they did extremely well, playing to about 70 percent capacity, far more than expected.
Courtney (Atlanta, GA)
So much for Bob Arum's "spectacular" undercard for Cotto vs Pacquaio
Dan Rafael (12:20 PM)
Right now the undercard looks terrible. But it is still not final.
Carlos (Los Angeles)
So does Mayweather get the lion's share against Pacquiao?
Dan Rafael (12:21 PM)
Impossible to say right now. Manny has a very big fight coming up. He needs to win and we need to see how it performs on PPV.
Shawn (Phoenix)
Even though UFC doesn't report PPV numbers, would it be fair to say the Mayweather fight did double what UFC did?
Dan Rafael (12:22 PM)
A) Who cares. B) Probably.
sam (houston)
Has a ppv event ever done 1 million buys but failed to sell out the venue? That's pretty odd to me.
Dan Rafael (12:22 PM)
Lewis-Tyson, for example, set the then-all-time record for buys and was not a sellout.
Kris (Bethpage)
Dan, help...colleges have started again which means i desperately need to go to AC ....pleassseeee tell me this Pavlik-Williams fight is going to happen before i lose my mind and start actually studying...
Dan Rafael (12:23 PM)
The fight is on. There is a press conference scheduled for Tuesday to make Dec. 5 official.
Kevin (Fall River)
How come the Klitschko-Arreola weigh-in was on a Thursday, I thought they were always the day before. Is it different because they are heavyweights and there is no weight limit?
Dan Rafael (12:24 PM)
Exactly. Heavyweight usually weigh on Thursday since it is really a formality and it gives the promoters an extra day to sell tickets and an earlier photo op.
Ron (Bethel,Ct)
Dan just wanted to say thank you for that article you wrote on mayweather not making weight!!! its about time someone stepped up and wrote about what it really was... a disgrace!! Campell and guzman don't make weight and the boxing world is ready to write them off. Mayweather does it but its okay. COME ON!!! He never had any intention of making the weight. He may be a great fighter but until he faces someone his own size I have no respect for him
Dan Rafael (12:25 PM)
Thanks. It had to be said.
jonathan (Indainapolis, in)
Hello Dan, Big fan of yours, so my question is regarding the junior lightweight division, and when will the top guys get into the ring to face each other? When can we expect guys like soto, guerrero, linares, and martinez to get it on!! Any combination of those guys make for exciting fights!!
Dan Rafael (12:25 PM)
I agree those would all be exciting fights. Soto, however, is moving up and likely won't face any of them at 130.
Mike ((Visalia, CA))
Good morning Rafa! I see Jason Litzau is fighting Johnnie Edwards @ Camp Lejeune, is this a tribute card to honor our armed forces?
Dan Rafael (12:26 PM)
Yes, that is exactly what it is. The card is not open to the public to get tickets, only for military at the base.
Ryan (Corpus Christi TX)
Have you heard anything on Soto and Valero on Nov 14?
Dan Rafael (12:27 PM)
Not happening. Valero has legal issues and can't get in the US.
Greg (Los Angeles)
Any idea what is next for Zab?
Dan Rafael (12:28 PM)
Don't know, don't care.
Bry (SF)
Dan, kudos to Richard Schaeffer for the success of FM-JMM. He may not be old school but the guy knows how to promote big fights with his fresh ideas.
Jackson (Iowa)
I know it makes me a sick, vile freak...but who won the Echols-Sheika fight?
Dan Rafael (12:29 PM)
Echols didn't fight and Sheika beat some other dude.
Sean (Richmond, VA)
I read this week where Richard Schaefer is talkin with RJJ and BHOP about the idea you proposed 60-40 to the winner. Can you speak to it?
Dan Rafael (12:30 PM)
They are talking. The idea might be 50-50 with 60-40 with the guy winning by KO getting the 60. But nothing is set. I won't believe this until it's signed. And even then I might have my doubts.
Hair (Rafael)
Goodbye Dan(sob*sob*).
Greg (Los Angeles)
Is Green fighting next weekend?
Dan Rafael (12:32 PM)
He's scheduled but his opponent, Victor Oganov is out. Oganov's promoter, Gary Shaw, told me he had some k ind of shoulder injury. They are looking for a new opponent. With a million buys for Mayweather-Marquez, maybe Green should have taken the fight with Bika on the undercard?
Ricardo [bronx, ny] [via mobile]
Dan, did you get to meet The Game HHH?
Dan Rafael (12:32 PM)
Didn't meet him but saw him at the weigh in. TIME TO PLAY THE GAME!!!!!!!!!
E (Kansas City)
Do you honestly believe Mayweather-Marquez really did a million
Dan Rafael (12:33 PM)
The exact figure right this minute is very slightly under 1 million but it will certainly go over 1 million with updates from the dish services an cable systems.
Emad Baddour (Cleveland, Oh)
Dan, before the fight, most boxing experts, yourself included gave Marquez a good chance of pulling off the upset, I didnt hear you screaming "mismatch" then. Do you honestly believe that "Pac Man" has a legitimate chance of beating the Mayweather assuming he can even get past Cotto??
Dan Rafael (12:34 PM)
I never gave Marquez a real chance to win. I thought Mayweather would beat him very easily all along.
Jay (Philly)
No notebook again this week, dano?
Dan Rafael (12:35 PM)
Not my call.
razor (dan rafael's bathroom)
dan, quit ducking me.
Kyle (Indianapolis)
Emad, Dan never gave JMM a chance, he all but said it was a mismatch! Try joining the chat every week, not just one!
Newt (Jacksonville)
Emad has trouble reading, evidently. Dan only said it was a mismatch for about six months . . .
Chris (Vancouver)
Im too cheap to become an insider, but even a hint as to where JMM dropped to on your list?
Dan Rafael (12:36 PM)
Seventh.
Jack (London Town)
The two best technical fighters active today are Mayweather and Calderon. Agree?
Dan Rafael (12:37 PM)
Yes, and knowing Floyd, he will be calling out Calderon next.
Randy (Shanghai)
If Jones - Hopkins gets made, what happens to Roy's scheduled fight againt Danny Green?
Dan Rafael (12:37 PM)
That fight is going forward. IF (IF) Jones-Hopkins II is made, it wouldn't be until March or April.
francisco (puerto rico )
dan when will the notebook be back
Dan Rafael (12:38 PM)
Next week.
Tim (Oakland)
Any truth to the rumour that Chavez jr will be on the Pac-Cotto undercard? Love to see him step up, maybe against Ronald Hearns.
Dan Rafael (12:38 PM)
It's possible, but it won't be against Hearns. Top Rank is talking about putting him, which will help ppv buys in the Hispanic marketplace.
Derek (Edmonton, Alberta)
Dan, am I nuts for thinking Green can KO Jones, and scuttle the Hop fight?
Dan Rafael (12:38 PM)
Not at all.
Kyle (Indianapolis)
"Yes, and knowing Floyd, he will be calling out Calderon next." Classic Rafael!
Marc (Malden, MA)
When does the next season of FNF begin? Shaving the beard on live tv is a good way to start the season.
Dan Rafael (12:39 PM)
We're back in early January.
Mike (Hillsboro, OR)
Floyd learned some lessons for picking oppents from Roy Jones JR.
Brandon (Chula Vista CA)
1 Million PPV buys? Huh!? And boxing is supposedto be dead right? Get that non-sense out of here!
JJD (Seattle)
Dan - I went to the local cinema to see PBF/JMM. A theater with a listed capacity of 239 seemed about 70% full to me, and for $15 it was a great atmosphere. The fans were vocal and it was really awesome - I would do it again in a second.
Dan Rafael (12:41 PM)
Good to hear. Hope they make that a regular outlet for big fights.
Joe (San Diego)
I read all over and watched 24/7 showing Oscar saying that he truly believed JMM was going to beat PBF. Hype job simply for the PPV numbers?
Dan Rafael (12:42 PM)
I don't believe for a second Oscar truly thought Marquez would win. Oscar was promoting and taking the side of the Mexican. The entire promotion had Oscar on Marquez's side and Richard Schaefer on Mayweather's side.
Rick (Marina)
What was your reaction to Mayorga wanting to try MMA?
Dan Rafael (12:43 PM)
Good riddance from boxing.
Jamie McLernon (Toronto)
Do you watch "Curb Your Enthusiasm"?
Dan Rafael (12:43 PM)
One of my favorite shows!
Michael (Long Beach, CA)
Interesting to read that Arreola even thinks Haye is undeserving of the title shot. Makes me like him even more.
Dan Rafael (12:44 PM)
One thing about Cris I have learned over the past few years is he says what's on his mind and you have to like that. Say what you want about Cris, but he's a real heavyweight who has beaten some solid guys especially compared to Haye's bogus heavyweight resume.
Ricardo [bronx, ny] [via mobile]
Dan, how about Katsidis-Soto at 135? like the match i think its a good BAD main event
Dan Rafael (12:44 PM)
Hell of a fight.
Marc (Malden, MA)
How does Mrs. DTM feel about the beard going away?
Dan Rafael (12:46 PM)
We have yet to really discuss it but I think she will be just fine.
Jack (Virginia)
You guys say Floyd needs to pick on someone his own size. Didnt he go to 154 to fight Oscar?
Dan Rafael (12:47 PM)
What about his previous three years of fights? I never blame a guy for taking the massive money. With Floyd, Marquez represented maybe his third or fourth biggest fight.
Brandon (Florida)
Dan you seem to give Mayweather credit where credit is due but still maintain an honest view point. But it seems like other writers have a real disdain for him that puts a certain bias in their writings about him. Do you notice that while you guys are sitting there watching the fight that they hate him?
Dan Rafael (12:50 PM)
Let's be very clear yet again: I have nothing against Floyd at all. I think he's a great fighter. I have the utmost respect for what he has accomplished and for his talent. The reason I am hard on him sometimes is because I think if he would fight the fights fans have wanted to see (be it Shane, Cotto, Pacman, Margarito, etc...) he would be the favorite in every one of them. And even if he were to lose, it would not be a huge negative. Fans want to see fighters challenge themselves and take risks. Floyd has the talent to do it but won't. That does not change my respect for him as a talented fighter.
Jeff (Redondo Beach, CA)
What will be back first, the beard or Kirkland?
Dan Rafael (12:51 PM)
Beard.
Andy (Fairfax, VA)
Playing devils advocate, I'm not defending Haye's pulling out of fights and poor negotiation tactics, but there is nothing wrong with a former lineal champion moving up a weight division for an immediate title shot.
Dan Rafael (12:52 PM)
I agree but when you talk the kind of smack he talked and then punk out like he did with the Klitschkos he looks like a fool.
JJD (Seattle)
Did you see Arreola's stunt at the weigh-in? "272 lbs"?! I actually gasped out loud. Pretty damn funny.
Dan Rafael (12:53 PM)
I actually knew it was coming because I rode over to the weigh in with Cris in the van that took him and his team to Staples Center. We had a good laugh about it in the car when I saw him talking off his shirt and putting this crazy belt on.
Sam (Penn State)
Are you generally for or against KO bonuses?
Dan Rafael (12:53 PM)
I like the idea. Gives the fighters an incentive to make things more exciting. I can't think of what the possible downside is.
Dan Rafael (12:54 PM)
Common sense says you give him credit for his talent and his previous victories and the fact that he retired as lineal champion and undefeated before coming back.
Tim (Napa)
Dan, I know Andre Ward's going to get his chance soon but is he your number 11 Super MiddleWeight at least?
Dan Rafael (12:55 PM)
Why don't you look at the ratings again before I ban you.
Dan (Cali)
Hatton vs JMM, good fight?
Dan Rafael (12:56 PM)
I do think that would create interest and be a pretty good event.
Weekly (Banishment)
Tim.....1 more wrong move and your banned
Don (Buffalo)
Has Pacquio started his training camp yet?
Dan Rafael (12:57 PM)
Yes, Freddie is with him in the Philippines and has been there for more than a week.
Kaseem (Trenton NJ)
Dan, it seems as if everyone played dumb about the weight but you and JMM. Do you think GB was aware that Floyd would not make weight from the outset and they simply traded Marquez for the option to do future business w/ Floyd?
Dan Rafael (12:58 PM)
I think everyone just turned the other way so as not to upset Mayweather and to cash their checks.
R! (Yay Area)
Who are they looking at as a possible replacement for Oganov? Maybe Bika vs Green could happen after all?? Miranda? Lacy?
Dan Rafael (12:59 PM)
Lou DiBella, Green's promoter, told me this morning that Tarvis Simms is a possibility (That's Tarvis, not Travis).
Eric (North Hollywood)
Hey Dan, I heard that one of the undercard fights was scrapped of due to visa issues for tomorrow night. The undercard just became weaker than it already is.
Dan Rafael (1:00 PM)
Alexander Ustinov, a heavyweight, is off the show because of a visa issue. He was supposed to fight Cedric Boswell, who now faces Cisse Salif. The undercard tomorrow night is pretty damn pathetic.
Pete (NYC)
Dan, what do you think of Goosen's trio of prospects on the undercard, Shawn Estrada, John John Molina, and Javier Molina? Do you have a favorite out of the three of them?
Dan Rafael (1:01 PM)
Estrada and Javier Molina are off the show for different reasons. Can't remember why Estrada is off, but Molina has a hand injury of some kind. John Molina is on but against Efren Hinojosa, which is probably a mismatch.
manny (ca)
If arreola wins will it be an upset?
Dan Rafael (1:02 PM)
If I don't ban you will it be an upset?
Brian (SLC, UT)
Danny boy! Being that May/Marquez shocked everybody with a million buys. Does Pac/May do 2 mil if they make it happen?
Dan Rafael (1:03 PM)
If that fight is made, I think it will do 2 million. The hype will be insane.
Jeff (Redondo Beach, CA)
If Buster Douglas beats Tyson, will it be an upset?
Dan Rafael (1:04 PM)
Exactly. The brain power of some of the freaks isn't enough to toast a piece of white bread.
Dave (San Diego, CA)
Arum should put your head-shaving on the Cotto-Pac undercard. It just might salvage it.
Tim (Napa)
Dannegan, why is there no fight credential for Arreola vs. Klitschko?
Dan Rafael (1:05 PM)
Why would there be?
Paul B (NY, NY)
DTM- Any update on Shane Berto? I have seen some info from other sites but wanted to check in with the only source which keeps it real.
Dan Rafael (1:06 PM)
They are talking about it for Jan. 30 at Mandalay Bay, but there is nothing done yet.
Rich (Chicago)
Sergio Martinez-Winky? Battle of the Milk Carton kids?
Dan Rafael (1:08 PM)
Doubtful.
Michael (Long Beach, CA)
"...will it be an upset?" And still, Dan, you come back week after week. Amazing.
Dan Rafael (1:08 PM)
Isn't it amazing?
Emad Baddour (Cleveland, Oh)
How come you're not talking about the fact that Mayweather was off for 2 years and came back and dominated a great fighter?? Mayweather must not even acknowledge you because it's obvious you don't like him
Dan Rafael (1:09 PM)
You are a complete moron. Banishment, are you hungry? Everyone say good bye to this tool.
Berndawg (Chicago, IL)
OPEN BEARD SHAVE!!!!!!!!!!!!!
koolkc107 (Daytona Beach, Fl)
When you rode to the weight-in, did Chris give you any insight on what he will try to do tomorrow?
Dan Rafael (1:10 PM)
I could tell you but then I'd have to kill you.
Banishment (Basement)
Ah, Emad, come on down! I think I will have you with rice pilaf.
Banishment (Hell)
I, however, will acknowledge you Emad...as I am sinking my teeth into your ignorant skull
manny (ca)
this is a boxing chat room right f your beard.
Dan Rafael (1:11 PM)
Apparently for my beard since I have received hundreds of comments about it.
Benny (Dallas, TX)
How quickly is Arum planning to move Omar Henry and Robert Marroquin along?
Dan Rafael (1:11 PM)
They will get attention because they both have potential and are exciting and could develop quickly.
Michael (Long Beach, CA)
Emad, do you actually know how to read?
Banishment (Parts Unknown)
Yuck...Emad tastes stupid.
joe (nyc)
what have you heard about V. KLITCHKO'S next defense coming against Kevin Johnson in Germany if he's successful tomorrow? Is that a done deal?
Dan Rafael (1:12 PM)
Heard about it? I'm the one who reported it initially. It is possible in December if Vitali wins.
Kell (London)
On the post-fight press conference you sound bitter and pathetic saying floyd looked rusty. Respect the P4P king.
Dan Rafael (1:13 PM)
Another moron. I said exactly the opposite in my question to Floyd. I said he DIDN'T look rusty.
Aaron (Hartford)
Someone call the village in London...they lost their idiot....
Justin (Philly)
Which young welterweight do you like better, Saul Alvarez or Mike Jones?
Dan Rafael (1:16 PM)
I like them both. Maybe down the road they'll fight each other in a huge fight. Top young American puncher against top young Mexican slugger.
E (Kansas City)
Vitali is keeping up a good pace for an oft injured fighter
Dan Rafael (1:18 PM)
Yup, three fights inside a year in heavyweight title fights is a lot these days and he may fight again in December.
Joe (San Diego)
Kevin Iole writes that Mayweather-Marquez beat the UFCrap 103 by a 2-1 margin...
Dan Rafael (1:19 PM)
Well Kevin would know about the MMA numbers, and I can't say I am surprised.
Pete (Salt Lake City)
I want to see Tony Grano vs. the Swamp Donkey next! That would be entertaining
Dan Rafael (1:20 PM)
Couldn't agree more. That would be a very fun fight.
Charles (Detroit)
Your beard vs Mayweather... I take your beard by knockout.
Jorge (East Los Angeles)
Dan, Any word on Maidana's opponent for the possicle HBO after dark card late in the year?
Dan Rafael (1:20 PM)
Unfortunately, Maidana will not be on that card. He is going to fight in Argentina later this year and HBO will air Funeka-Guzman on the Nov. 28 undercard.
Brett (Northern Virginia)
One other question for you Dan...I know you're a Northern Virginia guy. My wife was able to acquire ringside tickets for the Jimmy Lange fight at the Patriot Center tomorrow night. Should I be excited? I've never been to a professional fight.
Dan Rafael (1:21 PM)
Right down the street a few miles from where I live. It should be a fun atmosphere since Jimmy is a good local attraction. Have fun! Who would think that there would be a boxing card a five minutes from my house on the night I am on the other side of the country for another fight?
Chris Metler (Canada)
As a big 24/7 fan, how sick will the first few episodes of Cotto-Pacquiao be, with Manny being in the Philippines for the first time on the program?
Dan Rafael (1:24 PM)
It will be good.
Jim (TN)
Dosen't Emmanual Steward train both Klitch bros?
Dan Rafael (1:24 PM)
No, only Wladimir.
BJ (LA)
Dan, who's the better prospect, Korobov or D. Andrade?
Dan Rafael (1:25 PM)
They are both excellent prospects and both were accomplished amateurs.
Pete (Salt Lake City)
You say Vitali looked good in his two wins since his comeback, but c'mon Peter put no effort into that fight, and Gomez was nothing special
Dan Rafael (1:25 PM)
Vitali had a lot to do with how they looked. He looked great against two guys with totally different styles.
Pancho (Los Mochis)
What did you think of that amazing KO by Avalos on ShoBox - KO of the year worthy? What a dynamic prospect!
Dan Rafael (1:26 PM)
That was a terrific fight and a sweet knockout. I look forward to see Avalos again.
Michael (Long Beach, CA)
Dan, DVD pick of the week that referenced Benetiz made me think he was kind of underrated when talking about the great welterweights of the 80's. Heard his health is not good these days.
Dan Rafael (1:29 PM)
Benitez is like fifth Beatle Pete Best. He was right behind guys like Leonard, Hearns, Hagler, Duran. He fought all the top guys of his day. Unfortunately, I have heard for years that his health is very bad.
Robbie (Denton, Tx)
Dan, me and my wife attended the fight last weekend and had a blast. How did that fight compare with other big fights? We definitely want to do that again.
Dan Rafael (1:30 PM)
Glad you had fun. Last week's atmosphere paled in comparison to other bigger fights. If you loved that one you will love a bigger fight even more.
Braindamaged2too (Asylum)
Big D-Man,Aside from the fact that you're taking 'em on and about your chin over the PPV numbers...........was there a little widespread surprise that the fight really did those numnbers?
Dan Rafael (1:30 PM)
A lot of surprise.
Steven (Rialto)
I've read that Soto might fight Acosta on the pacquiao-cotto undercard, any truth?
Dan Rafael (1:31 PM)
It's one of several possibilities. I hope that fight is not made because Acosta is agony and on a card that already has Santos-Boreman, we don't need another crappy matchup.
john (st paul )
why is bad chad not on p4p list
Dan Rafael (1:32 PM)
Are you blind?
Rick (Marina)
How glad were you to see the Giants ruin Jerry Jones new stadium debut by beating the cowgirls?
Dan Rafael (1:33 PM)
I loved every minute of it. Just as I got into the car at the airport after getting home from Vegas last week, the game was starting. I went home and then watched the rest of the game. Loved it.
Daniel (DC)
I bet you'll look like Chris Arreola after you shave your head.
Dan Rafael (1:34 PM)
Not true. I do not have any tattoos.
King (NYC)
Dan, I think a mohawk will look good on you.
Charles (Philly)
DTM, I'm sure it doesn't come close to the live experience, but watching the PPV card in a crowded movie theater (I was in Alexandria, near your neck of the woods) made for a great atmosphere! Here's hoping more promotions follow suit!
Diane (Cleveland)
I think a nice chunk of the ppv sales were from the fans that want to see Mayweather lose, and didn't want to miss it.
mike (ohio)
where is the love child dont u think he would be a good opponent for clottey
Dan Rafael (1:36 PM)
Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh, the Love Child. He would only be a good opponent for Clottey if I wanted to see LC get his ass kicked.
Pedro (Puerto Rico)
Will you be in NYC for the Juanma fight?
Dan Rafael (1:37 PM)
Yes.
Dennis (Pittsburgh)
If you shave your head and face....that might draw 1 million PPVs!
Dan Rafael (1:38 PM)
That would be pretty sad and mean there are 1 million people with no life or any hope of one.
Dennis (Pittsburgh)
Was Travis Kaufmann exposed by Tony Grano and we can kiss his chances of being a heavyweight contender goodbye? Or you think we'll see him again?
Dan Rafael (1:38 PM)
Kauffman was exposed, not that I ever thought much of him as a prospect before the fight.
Cody (Tucson)
Can we go a week without mentioning the love child please Its getting old
Dan Rafael (1:39 PM)
Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh, the Love Child. No.
Michael (Toronto)
Public service announcement for the freaks: Pascal-Branco is on gofightlive tonight for anyone outside Canada.
Don (Buffalo)
Dan - why is HBO subjecting its subscribers to watch Joan Guzman fight again? I'd rather watch Andre Dirrel
Dan Rafael (1:40 PM)
I wish I knew.
Gary (Falls Church, VA)
Does each ticket bought for viewing last weeks fight in a movie theater count toward the PPV numbers, or is it just the residential buys?
Dan Rafael (1:41 PM)
No, the movie tickets go in the closed circuit revenue line.
Michael (Hollywood, CA)
Has HBO confirmed a Countdown show for Pavlik/Williams?
Dan Rafael (1:41 PM)
They are producing a countdown show for the fight (not a 24/7, a 30-minute countdown show). In fact, I am going to another hotel in LA later this afternoon to tape an interview for the show.
Andrew (Detroit)
What's going on with Jonathan Banks?
Dan Rafael (1:42 PM)
He fights Javier Mora on the Klitschko-Arreola undercard on Saturday.
Manny (Kansas)
Hey Dano, If Cris Arreola wins tomorrow night you will....
Dan Rafael (1:43 PM)
Not make any promises of things I will do.
Gene (Ft. Lauderdale)
Just a review of my theater experience. It was fun and cost efficient. Of course, I'll always buy the fight if i can get more than 5 people together. But if it's you an only a couple people, the theater is a great alternative to watching it at home. I had a blast.
Bime (Taunton, MA)
D-Money$$ Your silver lining on Marquez losing... Hilarious!!! Classic.
Dan Rafael (1:44 PM)
Thank you (read the blog from yesterday if you don't know what he means).
matt (malta)
if vic darchinyan retires today, is ne a HOFer?
Dan Rafael (1:46 PM)
Which Hall of Fame? The Australian Trash Talker Hall of Fame? Probably.
Gene (Ft. Lauderdale)
Dan, how many other fights have done a million buys without a heavyweight or Oscar?
Dan Rafael (1:47 PM)
There have only been five non-heavyweight to reach 1 million -- in no order: Mayweather-Oscar (the record), Mayweather-Marquez, Oscar-Hopkins, Oscar-Pacquiao, Oscar-Triniad.
Bert (Minneapolis)
So, Mayweather made $10 million. Payed $6 million in back taxes, and $3 for this fight, so he's only walking away w/ $1 million? That's only one trip to the club and making it rain! He better fight again ASAP.
Dan Rafael (1:48 PM)
He made way more given the ppv numbers and all the other revenue in the fight. $10 million was the minimum guarantee.
P.G (NY)
i fear that this loss by Marquez will do damage to his legacy. Do you think this hurts his HOF chances in the boxing writers eyes?
Dan Rafael (1:49 PM)
Not in my eyes. To me, the fight meant nothing to his legacy in terms of a negative for losing.
Justin (Vegas)
Any word on Sergio Mora or is he on the milk box?
Dan Rafael (1:49 PM)
Read the news headlines section on the boxing page.
bboykin (colorado)
How about letting Floyd cut your beard off?
Jon (Miami)
Apparently Dan can't read. Gene asked WITHOUT OSCAR. The answer would only be one.....this past weekend.
Dan Rafael (1:50 PM)
I was offering a complete answer you terd.
Ian (Ireland)
Do you think that Vernon Forrest should be a HOF'er?
Dan Rafael (1:51 PM)
No.
Mrs. DTM (at work)
I'm making an appointment at the salon for your "manscaping."
Dan Rafael (1:52 PM)
Now you've got Mrs. D$ ragging on me too. Thanks, Freaks.
Vasyl Lomachenko (Ukraine)
Hey Dan, how bad do you want me to turn professional?
Dan Rafael (1:52 PM)
Real bad.
Briks, (Philly)
Get Freddie Roach's hairdresser to cut your beard. That dude was hilarious.
Grey (Cape Cod, MA)
When is Korobov due to fight again? He's MIA on your fight schedule.
Dan Rafael (1:54 PM)
He was back home in Russia for a little bit. He'll be back on the schedule soon enough. He's had a very busy year.
Eric (North Hollywood)
LOL Dan, I think that's the first turd reference in a chat....Almost got in trouble here @ work for laughing out loud.
Dan Rafael (1:55 PM)
Sorry bro. But it had to be said. He really is a turd.
Big Rob (Fort Worth)
Sup Dan, I wonder if you could share your opinion for a debate me and my boys have been having. We agree that the best boxer of our generation (1988-present) is either Roy Jones or PBF. I have argued that I have not seen anyone better than Roy in his prime but he just doesn't have the fights to back it up especially now that Floyd has beaten 3 Hall of Famers. What say you?
Dan Rafael (1:57 PM)
It's open for debate. To me, Roy is still the best fighter I have ever seen live. Mayweather is probably second. Roy has conclusive victories over lock HOFers like Toney and Hopkins and moved up all the way up to heavyweight for a belt. Cleaned out light heavy, beat a lot of good guys (and a lot of sanitation workers as well). But he never picked on smaller guys.
Oscar De La Hoya (LA)
I truly believe Dan's beard will pull off an upset over the razor.
Grey (Cape Cod, MA)
I think you should mention that David Diaz and Jesus Chavez are fighting this weekend. It's probably the best off-tv fight in the United States in recent memory, though you can argue both guys are past their best.
Dan Rafael (1:59 PM)
Should be a war. It will be on gofightlive if you want to watch it on the Net.
Kyle (Indianapolis)
Who is the 3rd HOFer?
Dan Rafael (1:59 PM)
Virgil Hill probably will make the HOF and Roy destroyed him with one body shot. Roy also beat Felix Trinidad (albeit old and heavy) with ease and Tito is going to the HOF as well.
jcs (winnipeg, canada)
you've given us variant spellings - is he a turd or a terd
Dan Rafael (2:00 PM)
He's both.
Randy (Shanghai)
If Marquez losing meant nothing to his legacy and you say Mayweather had a big advantage because of the weight why did you drop Marquez so much in your pound for pound rankings?
Dan Rafael (2:01 PM)
It doesn't change his all-time legacy but a beatdown like that sure changes where stands today.
Terd Jandaeng (Thailand)
Why is Dan talking about me?
Dan Rafael (2:01 PM)
That's Terdsak.
Charles (Philly)
Now that razor has entered the mix with shower door and Don King's jacuzzi, it's time to add a toiletries division to your rankings....
Kyle (Indianapolis)
"Floyd has beaten 3 Hall of Famers" I was referring to Floyd: Oscar, JMM, and ???
Dan Rafael (2:02 PM)
Maybe Corrales, maybe Genaro Hernandez. Maybe Gatti. Maybe Hatton.
Linus (From Peanuts)
Floyd can borrow my blanket if it will help with his insecurity probem
Gary (Ft. Wayne)
When will we see Gamboa in a big fight???
Dan Rafael (2:04 PM)
Maybe next year against JM Lopez.
Derek (Boulder CO)
Dan, did Lenard Ellerbe take you out to dinner while you were in Vegas? Or does he still owe on that bet?
Dan Rafael (2:05 PM)
He was obviously busy last week. He still owes me. I also won a dinner bet against Schaefer last week when I went 3-0 on undercard picks and he went 0-3. I only needed to go 2-1 to win the bet.
Kyle (Indianapolis)
Buy or Sell: Floyd will owe the IRS again in 2011
Dan Rafael (2:05 PM)
Buy.
Andrew (Detroit)
Dan's beard vs Don King's hair, who wins?
Dan Rafael (2:06 PM)
Beard TKO11 Hair in a tough fight.
Cody (Tucson)
When is Lopez gonna fight Caballero?
Dan Rafael (2:06 PM)
Possibly in January.
JP (Columbus, OH)
Dan, I come to you because I know you've got inside sources. It's been awhile, so I thought it should be asked. Currently, how many Ricky Hattons are there?
Dan Rafael (2:07 PM)
Sources say there remains but one Ricky Hatton.
Randy (Shanghai)
don't forget what Roy did to the "Body Snatcher" Mike McCallum if he's not in the Hall of Fame, he should be.
Dan Rafael (2:07 PM)
Good call.
Eric (Irving, TX)
DTM, the PBF apologists are hilarious. Look contrary to what PBF thinks, he is not the most loved fighter in boxing not b/c of racism, but b/c he frustrates the hell out of the fans. He's openly ducked the top welterweights while proclaiming himself to be the greatest. I think he's insanely talented, and will be happy to call him the best welter in the world. When he actually fights one of the top 3
Dan Rafael (2:07 PM)
Well said.
Kyle (Indianapolis)
Did you take the Mrs. to the fight last weekend? Has she ever went with you to a big event?
Dan Rafael (2:08 PM)
No, she was home. When I am at big fights, I am working. She has traveled with me a few times but never for a really big fight.
Nico (Chicago)
Speaking of Genaro Hernandez, how is he doing?
Dan Rafael (2:09 PM)
Genaro is doing pretty well and it's amazing to see. He was near death. I saw him last week in Vegas and he looked a lot better than the previous time I saw him. It's really great that he beat such a serious kind of cancer.
Randy (Shanghai)
maybe Hatton in the Hall of Fame??? You're kidding right?
Dan Rafael (2:09 PM)
I didn't say I would vote for him but I am sure he will get a lot of support on the ballot someday.
Jay (CT)
Dan, in your blog your DVD pick of week mentioned Benitez having a huge smile on his face while Hope was going down. Reminded me of another classic knockout where the fighter raised his hand and pretended to push the other fighter down as he was falling to the canvas. Please help = what fight was that.
Dan Rafael (2:11 PM)
I think I had that fight as a DVD pick of the week not too long ago. I think you are thinking of Julian Jackson drilling Buster Drayton.
Mike (Brooklyn)
Dan is Shane getting desperate for a big fight?
Dan Rafael (2:11 PM)
Getting?
Tom (new york)
whats going on with victor ortiz?
Dan Rafael (2:14 PM)
Talked to Victor in Vegas last week (and saw him last night at the Fight Night Club show here in LA) and he showed off his scar from wrist surgery. He is healed up and may return to HBO on Dec. 12 in an opening television fight.
Big John (Cyberspace)
Who's calling the fight tomorrow, D$?
Dan Rafael (2:15 PM)
Jim Lampley, Larry Merchant and Emanuel Steward.
Chris (Tempe) [via mobile]
Prediction for Bernard Dunne's fight this weekend?
Dan Rafael (2:16 PM)
Pain?
Linden ((L.A.))
DTM:I'm assuming you went to the Fight Night Club show last night. What did you think of it? Nice venue?
Dan Rafael (2:18 PM)
I did go. It's a very cool venue with a great setup. NO bad seats. Some people sit in the balcony, which are great seats. Others on the floor stand in a general admission. They play music during the fights like a night club. I was on the stage ringside. Because the ring is on a stage, it is low to the ground and the ring was small, which makes for more action. All in all, a GREAT venue and set up for smaller fights.
Josh (San Diego, CA)
If you could pass it along to the promoters, I just wanted to say that the theater experiment was a big success. In Cincinnati, they had to bring in more seats to accommodate everyone, and sold beer and chicken wings right in the theater. The crowd was jacked, even for the undercard fights, and I hope all major PPVs find their way into theaters. I will go every time.
Dan Rafael (2:18 PM)
That is great.
Joe (Green Bay) [via mobile]
I read on another site that your beard is being trained by Chuck Norris' beard for its upcoming bout. Any truth to that?
Patrick (Mexico)
Dan Im a really bad flier like you...Im curious if it's gotten easier for you over the years, with all the trips. Also, Xanax has always helped me a lot on the worst flights.
Dan Rafael (2:20 PM)
A little but every flight is a trauma.
Richard (Kendall Park, NJ)
Maybe Malagnaggi can shave some of those nifty designs into your head for you?
Bert (Minneapolis)
Dan, is the battle between your beard and the razor blade eligible for the WBC Diamond Belt?
Dan Rafael (2:22 PM)
I'll check with Don Jose.
manny (ca)
Anything new on the malanaggi diaz rematch?
Dan Rafael (2:22 PM)
Read yesterday's blog.
Tim F. (Saint Paul)
How many HOF's has Pacman beaten? Maybe he isn't in Floyd's or Roy's class athletically, but when you factor in taking on all comers, he should rank way higher overall as a fighter of our generation.
Dan Rafael (2:23 PM)
Manny beat Oscar, Morales, Barrera and Marquez, plus a maybe in Hatton at least.
Kyle (Madison, Wi)
Hey Dan, What do you think the attendance at the Staples center will be tomorrow night?
Dan Rafael (2:23 PM)
The promoters expect at least 10,000.
Joe (San Francisco, CA)
Floyd Mayweather is a current day Roy Jones. He is without a doubt the most talented fighter right now. But, due to his desire to take safe opponents we may never know how great he could be. In Jones case, his later losses by KO now cast a shadow over his earlier opponent choices. One would think this most likely happens to Floyd as well.
Ian (Pembroke Pines, FL)
Hey Randy. Hatton was 2005 Ring Mag Fighter of the Year and 2 weight division world champion. Plus, his only 2 losses were against the present-day #1 P4P fighters. Plus there is no fighter on this planet that could draw 30,000 fans from thousands of miles away to watch a fight.
james (england)
You really believe JMMs resume is better than Hattons?
Dan Rafael (2:26 PM)
Definitely.
Tim (Napa)
Are you in LA right now?
Dan Rafael (2:26 PM)
Right this very minute!
Tyson (Madison)
Any Chance Of Mayweather-Mosley?? Seems like a good fight that would draw interest.
Dan Rafael (2:27 PM)
Obviously, it's possible.
Chris (Vancouver)
After reading some of the geniuses that write into you(Emad/Kell), whatever they pay you, your underpaid. Your a patient man D$.
Dan Rafael (2:28 PM)
I know. You should see some of the insanity that doesn't get posted.
Andy (Ventura, Ca)
Who wins, Robert Guerrero or Jorge Linares?
Dan Rafael (2:29 PM)
Now that is a fight I would love to see.
Randy (Shanghai)
How do you think Manny's handspeed and reflexes would compare with Floyd's?
Dan Rafael (2:31 PM)
Mayweather probably has a slight advantage in both departments.
Jose (NYC)
Is Rocky Juarez the Buffalo Bills of Boxing. What is the record for most title shots w/o actually winning a belt Dan?
Dan Rafael (2:32 PM)
I'm not sure what the record is but Rocky is 0-5-1 and really should be 0-6 because the draw with John in their first fight was a gift.
john (st paul )
what fight are u looking forward to most the rest of this yr
Dan Rafael (2:33 PM)
A bunch of 'em. Cotto-Pacquiao, obviously. Pavlik-Williams also. And, of course, the Super Six fights.
Dan Rafael (2:34 PM)
OK, Freaks, thanks for chatting today. Hope you enjoy tomorrow's big fight and read all the coverage. Talk to you next week. Peace.
