Dan Rafael (12:01 PM)
Greetings Fight Freaks to our weekly chat. Hope you get check out today's big notbeook as well as this week's blogs and the updated schedule. Not much up this weekend other than a ShoBox but we can look back at last Klitschko-Arreola fight and all of the big fights coming in the next few weeks. Let's get to it.
Kyle (Indianapolis)
What do you expect from this tripleheader on Showtime tonight in terms of action and competitiveness?
Dan Rafael (12:03 PM)
Should be a decent show. I expect Marcus Johnson to crush his opponent in the opener. That's a pure showcase fight. The middle fight between Antwone Smith and Hentry Crawford to me is by far the most interesting and potentially competitive on the card. But Crawford can make boring fights. I hope it's a good match. It's a toss up fight. The main event is Allan Green against Tarvis Simms, who is a late sub for the injured Oganov. This is Green's chance to shine again and make a statement that as soon as somebody falls out of the super middle tourney he should be the guy to take their place.
Bing (Philly)
Oh, so that's why they call Juan Diaz the "BABY bull."
Dan Rafael (12:03 PM)
Exactly.
Garth (CT)
Greetings Dan, what percentage do you give the Diaz-Malignaggi fight of being made for Dec 12th? I hope it does get signed as that would be a good fight to cap off a very good 2009 of boxing.
Dan Rafael (12:04 PM)
Based on what I am hearing from folks behind the scenes, the fight will happen. They just need to play it out.
John (ATL GA)
Dan, when I read your blog bout Shannon Briggs comin back, I cried. I really cried. All I could think about was another Liakhovick-like fight. I have to disagree with you and say that the last thing boxing needs is for Shannon Briggs to make a comeback. It would serve no purpose. I don't think he would stand a chance against any HW, and his fights are simply unwatchable.
Dan Rafael (12:05 PM)
Don't shoot the messenger. He's coming back whether we like it or not. Frankly, a lot of his fights suck as do a lot of other heavyweight fights. But at least Shannon has an engaging personality.
Chris (Columbus, OH)
Dan, you have to admit... that Pacquiao-Cotto undercard is horrible.
Dan Rafael (12:06 PM)
It ain't too good.
Horn (Vegas)
Will last week's experience at the Golden Boy buildings influence you to take your laptop wherever you go when you're on the road?
Dan Rafael (12:07 PM)
I always travel with my laptop. It was in my hotel room. I was in a car being taken to an interview.
Ruben (Indio, Ca)
Do you agree that the Soto vs. Valero fight will be more exciting then the Pac-man vs. Cotto fight?
Dan Rafael (12:07 PM)
No, because Valero-Soto isn't happening. Apparently, you've been under a rock somewhere.
Joseph (Chicago)
Danny boy, when is James Toney getting a crack at the Klitschko sisters? And why don't you have Toney ranked at heavyweight?
Dan Rafael (12:08 PM)
Toney is not ranked because he has not done anything of merit whatsoever in ages.
Dan (Columbus, OH)
Dan, when will you vote Prince Naseem into the Hall of Fame?????
Dan Rafael (12:08 PM)
Maybe this year. Ballots should be arriving in voter's hands next week.
Ron (Bethel, Ct)
Dano... I was hoping I could pick your brain. After looking at your divisional rankings I was wondering how arreola got dropped all the way to 7? I know he took a beating against klitschko but do you think Maskaev deserves to be ranked higher in your rankings then cris? Just curious how you go about making your decisions. Thanks!
Dan Rafael (12:09 PM)
Maybe you should read closer. He's now 10th.
Zaavan (Philly)
Is shane mosley running from andre berto. Mosley know berto want to fight him instead he trying to fight mayweather berto even came out and said he want to fight mosley. what your thoughts on this situation
Dan Rafael (12:10 PM)
Shane isn't running from anyone. If you could fight Mayweather for say $10 million and get tons of credit if you win or you can fight Berto maybe for $2 million and not get much credit if you win which would you pick? Stop smoking crack please.
Kurt (London)
Hey Dan, after Vitalis destruction of Arreola,How well do you think he would fare in other era's?personally I think he would be a nightmare for any great Heavyweight over the years.
Dan Rafael (12:12 PM)
I have believed for several years that Vitali would be a handful for heavyweights of all eras even if he might get beat here or there. He has good defense, is awkward, has good power and a good chin. I was once on an ESPN show debating with Teddy Atlas about the subject. I believed then that Vitali would knock out Rocky Marciano and I believe it now. Teddy, of course, did not agree. But it was a fun debate.
Julio (Tucson, AZ)
Dan the Man...Do you know if Manny Pacquiao's training camp was affected with the all the floods in the Phillipines? If so, how will it affect his training?
Dan Rafael (12:12 PM)
I am told that his camp was not upset by the disaster in the Philippines.
Greg P (Staten Island,NY)
Dan, saw the update on Kostya Tszyu in the blog....where do you rank him all-time at 140?
Dan Rafael (12:13 PM)
Not sure what number, but he is certainly one of the top five or so at 140. He was a great amateur and a great pro.
Rags (NYC)
Umm..what's a WBC "special eliminator"? I see DaVarryl Williamson v. Ray Austin has been sanctioned for whatever it is on Halloween night.
Dan Rafael (12:13 PM)
It's a way for the crooks at the WBC to collect a few bucks.
Mark (Brooksville, Fla.)
Dan,As always my props to you for all the blogs and coverage this week. In regards to thr B-Hop vs RJJ possible match-up. At this point who would you favor? And is this going to be a PPV fight?
Dan Rafael (12:14 PM)
I'm not sure what I think yet. Let's see how they both perform in the interim bouts they are supposed to have in December. If they get through them and the fight does happen, it will be on HBO PPV.
ron (Bethel,ct)
Dano... is it common for fight cards to change as often as they do or is it more a bob arum thing? case in point I have tickets for Oct 10 card at msg. Don't get me wrong I'm excited to see junma and gamboa but since I purchased the tickets Kevin Johnson is off the card(that was the fight I was really looking forward to) Martirosyan is off the card, and Korobov is off the card. When he announces these cards are the fights signed or is it what he hopes will take place
Dan Rafael (12:15 PM)
Boxing cards change all the time. There are injuries, visa issues, legal issues, promotional issues, manager issues, other fights for more money that come up, you name it. Boxing tickets and advertisements always say "card subject to change."
Tenphel (Minnesota)
oh i yeah what happens if Roy Jones Jr. loose to Danny Green.. its the fight with Bernard Hopkins still on regardless of the out come?
Dan Rafael (12:16 PM)
Maybe you ought to read the report on the deal which clearly states that if he loses, there is no fight.
Ron (Bethel, Ct)
Danamial ...... Curious if you know any other fighters that are going to be on the Nov 7 Dawson fight card besides Angulo? Is the rest going to local talent or any other good fights shaping up for that card?
Dan Rafael (12:17 PM)
I am only aware of the two televised bouts. I do know that there are some talks about Demetrius Andrade fighting on the undercard off TV.
Braindamaged2too (Asylum)
Mr. D-T-M,Nice job trying to make sense of the Paulie vs Juan soap opera in your notebook. The more that comes out makes it seem like Diaz just isn't into the rematch and will eventually opt out. What do you think?
Dan Rafael (12:18 PM)
I think Diaz and his manager, Willie Savannah, have no respect for Malignaggi and think they can get whatever they want, which isn't the case.
Greg P (Staten Island,NY)
Dan, w/the Super Six to take place for the next 18-24 months where does C Dawson get his next challenge at 175 from?....who would you like to see him fight after Johnson in 2010?
Dan Rafael (12:19 PM)
Dawson has a problem because with the top 168 guys doing the tournament and 175 being pretty darn weak, I have no idea where his big fight comes from. MAYBE he could end up with the Hopkins-Jones 2 winner, which would give Dawson a fifth consecutive 40-year-old opponent.
Greg P (Staten Island,NY)
Dan, Pascal/Diaconu rematch...Who will televise it?
Dan Rafael (12:20 PM)
No TV at the moment but talking to folks involved with the fight, they are trying to get some sort of US TV. Frankly, if they can't I'd be happy to have a card like that on PPV with Pascal-Diaconu 2 and possibly Holt-Ngoudjo.
matt (malta)
hi dan. now that briggs is back, who would win a fight between these two: brigg's weird blonde braids or malignaggi's flying dreads??
Dan Rafael (12:20 PM)
Tough call.
Corey (Morgantown, WV)
Dan, what is the more likely scenario: 1) Mosley vs Berto in Jan, and then Mosley vs Mayweather later, or 2) Mosley vs Mayweather in first qtr of 2010 and no Berto, or 3) Mosley vs Berto in Jan, and no Mayweather?
Dan Rafael (12:22 PM)
By thought is that it will shake out like this: Mosley and Berto on Jan. 30 on HBO. If Mosley wins and Pacquio loses, I think we see Mayweather-Mosley later in 2010.
Jesse (Albertville, MN)
Dan the man,I am curious to get your thoughts on why Diaz and Schaefer are obviously avoiding a re-match with Malignaggi. Where does Schaefer expect Diaz to go to get a "big money" fight? If he moves up to Jr. Welterweight, he is going to get killed against the top Jr. Welterweights, Bradley, Hatton, Khan. They need to take the re-match. Its what the fans want, its what boxing wants.
Dan Rafael (12:23 PM)
It's not Schaefer. He made a deal with DiBella for the rematch, a clean 50-50 co-promotion. When he went back to his fighter and the manager, they turned it down.
Benvenuto (Miami)
DTM....I have to vent my frustration with Juan Diaz refusing to give Paulie a rematch. I have heard everything from location to weight being the alleged reason. Please elaborate for us.
Dan Rafael (12:24 PM)
They are still in the sausage making process. Give it a little time. I believe it will get done.
Tom E (Jersey City, NJ)
duBoef mentioned at the Pavlik-Williams press conference that Brandon Jacobs is Kendall Holt's manager. First I'd heard of it. Do you know if this is a baby step into something bigger for 27 or is it just something else he's doing on the side for Holt as his friend?
Dan Rafael (12:25 PM)
Brandon and Holt are buddies and now that Holt's former manager is in prison on massive drug dealing charges, Brandon is managing him. Brandon is a big boxing fan and is also involved with some younger fighters along with Pat Lynch, the longtime manager of Arturo Gatti.
Ds (DE)
Any idea who Hopkins could be fighting in Dec tune up?
Dan Rafael (12:26 PM)
Nobody has been signed but one of the possible names I have heard is Enrique Ornelas.
Darin (Silver Spring, MD)
What weight will Pavlik/Williams fight at?
Dan Rafael (12:26 PM)
160 for the middleweight championship. No diamond belt crap necessary.
Charles (Philly)
Is Roy making too much money on the Green fight for him to pull out in order to ensure that the Hopkins fight comes off?
Dan Rafael (12:27 PM)
Way too much. He's making something like $4 million U.S.
Jose' Sulaiman (WBC Headquarters)
Dan, I declare you Super Heavyweight Champion of Chatting. Congratulations! I will be sending you the bill for the sanctioning fees in the mail.
Dan Rafael (12:28 PM)
No thanks.
bill (pgh)
Can a B-Hop tune up really land on basic cable?
Dan Rafael (12:28 PM)
Anything is possible.
dantheboxingfan (NJ)
Dan, aside from being dominated, Arreola showed an incredble chin Saturday, wouldn't you agree?
Dan Rafael (12:29 PM)
He did show a good chin. He also showed heart. That's about all he showed.
Rico (Suave, CA)
Dan, any truth to the rumor that Shannon Briggs is contemplating a comeback?
Dan Rafael (12:29 PM)
We have our first candidate for banishment of the day. Freaks, what do you think?
Steve (Indianapolis)
On a scale of 1-10, how Ugly is the Guerrero/Goossen/GBP thing gunna get?
Dan Rafael (12:29 PM)
Crank it up to 11.
near (banishment)
Rico....Read the Blogs before coming to chat!
Matt (portland, OR)
Sorry for another Kirkland question but do you know if he's able to fight or train once he gets into a halfway house?
Dan Rafael (12:30 PM)
If he makes it there, yes, he can train.
Joel (Eastchester, NY)
Dan, any idea what will happen with Latin Fury 13 now that Chavez jr. is off?
Dan Rafael (12:31 PM)
If he blows out Rowland, he could still fight on the card. If not, probably fights involving Humberto Soto, maybe Montiel, maybe Arce.
Duff (Abington, MA)
It's official. A terrible undercard on the Pacman-Cotto PPV.
Kent (St. Catharines)
Dan! Loved "The History Made Before My Eyes" blog. It reminded me of when you were invited up to Pacquio's suite to watch his destruction of Hatton. I don't think there is another boxing writer that is as trusted as you are in the business or by the fans. I don't believe anyone else could have been in those situations. Keep up the great work.
Dan Rafael (12:32 PM)
Thank you. Those are two of the more memorable stories I have been able to write. Part of it is being in the right place at the right time.
Tom E (Jersey City, NJ)
John from Atlanta should look into professional help if he actually cried upon reading Rafael's blog about Briggs coming back.
Kelby (Omaha)
Hey Dan, Interesting write up on Roy Jone's Espn card featuring amature Marine fights. I've heard many stories about military boxing always wanted to see those guys bang...
Dan Rafael (12:33 PM)
Should be fun. ESPNU televised the military championships last year. Those guys bang away. Usually a lot better fights than typical amateur matches.
Aaron (MA)
Read an article recently and Richard Schaefer almost guarantees that boxing will be back on the networks within a year. Do you think there is a chance of that happening?
Dan Rafael (12:33 PM)
I do think there's a chance. Put it this way - if boxing does land back on network TV I believe it will be Schaefer who delivers it.
Brian (scottsdale, az)
yes, jones jr. and hopkins are hall of famers. But I have a hard time getting excited for it. wasn't thier first fight rather boring?
Dan Rafael (12:35 PM)
Their first fight stunk out loud. However, that was a long, long time ago. Now that they are older and have lost a step it might be a lot better. They also have big egos and I'm sure they both will really, really want it, not to mention the KO provision. All I know is I'm watching two all-time greats with a lot of water under the bridge fight in a bout that has been a long time coming. If you buy it, go in with reasonable expectations and you won't be upset if the fight stink again.
Courtney (Atlanta, GA)
Dan, wouldn't a Chad Dawson fight vs Jean Pascal be pretty big if they did it in Canada?
Dan Rafael (12:36 PM)
It could be. If Pascal would get some US exposure, a fight between him and Dawson could be built up to an HBO-level fight.
Rui ((Nutley, NJ))
How does one pronounce Poonsawat Kratingdaenggym?
Dan Rafael (12:36 PM)
Believe it or not, my wife can pronounce it as well as many other names of Thailand fighters. I am not joking.
Kent (St. Catharines)
Easy Ban! Down with Rico.
sam (houston)
Do you think 24/7 Roy Bhop could be the best since they sincerely hate each other and it's not hype?
Dan Rafael (12:38 PM)
I don't think any decision has been made about whether there will be a 24/7 for that fight yet.
Rick (Marina,)
At what weight was the Jones-Hopkins fight at?
Dan Rafael (12:38 PM)
175.
David (Houston)
If the paulie diaz rematch happens what would be a poosible opening fight for that card? And will Soto fight anyone at all?
Dan Rafael (12:39 PM)
It could be a Victor Ortiz fight.
Anthony (Staten Island, NY)
Please tell me why I should watch boxing over MMA?
Dan Rafael (12:40 PM)
Watch what you want. I don't care.
matt (spkane)
Is this the longest a chat has ever gone without mention of the Love Child?
Dan Rafael (12:40 PM)
Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh, the Love Child.
Steve (NYC)
Thank you for taking Ruiz out of your rankings!
Dan Rafael (12:41 PM)
I dropped him because he has reached a year of inactivity, which is the general rule I use, although carved in stone.
Nick (Boston)
After Victor's performance in his last fight on HBO he should not be right back on the network.
Dan Rafael (12:41 PM)
Why not? He was in a fight of the year candidate.
Kyle (Indianapolis)
Are you excited at all about the Prizefighter Heavyweight "tournament" tomorrow?
Dan Rafael (12:42 PM)
I am interested becuase I dig the format.
Tom (Palm Coast, Fl)
Is it difficult to write critical things about a fighter's performance when you know them well and like them? Has a fighter ever taken exception to something you have written?
Dan Rafael (12:43 PM)
Sometimes but that's my job. I don't make it personal. And sure, over the years I have heard from fighters/manager/promoters/TV execs who have taken exception to things I have written. Of course, I have taken exception to watching some of the matchups I have watched.
Joel (Eastchester, NY)
Dan, what is next for John Duddy?
Dan Rafael (12:44 PM)
He fights next week on the Top Rank PPV undercard, although his bout is not part of the telecast. I will be in the arena to watch it at ringside.
Keith H (Seattle)
Dan, what is the Prizefighter Heavyweight tournament and where can it be seen?
Dan Rafael (12:46 PM)
It's a Barry Hearn-promoted event in England and televised on Sky. They have 8 heavyweights in a one-night competition. Three rounds and the winners advance to the final all in one night. Some veteran names and older guys and some younger guys. They've done them in various weight classes. Today is the heavyweight version.
Dan Rafael (12:47 PM)
Here's the lineup for today's: At London: "Prizefighter -- The Heavyweights III" (seven bouts, 3 rounds apiece, quarterfinals): Danny Williams vs. Carl Baker; Audley Harrison vs. Scott Belshaw; Scott Gammer vs. Coleman Barrett; Danny Hughes vs. Neil Perkins.
Justin (St. Louis)
was the RJJ, Hopkins signing the biggest you have seen behind closed doors?
Dan Rafael (12:48 PM)
As far as a deal actually being completed in front of my own eyes, yes.
Chris Arreola (LA)
Dan, can you please make arrangements for an audio simulcast of your chats? I can't read my computer screen through this haze of tears.
Rec League Boxing (TX Prison)
And new Texas Penal system champion....James Kirkland!!!!
Josh (Lincoln, NE)
Any news on the Winky Wright front?
Dan Rafael (12:49 PM)
Let me check my milk carton.
Gerardo (AZ)
So is Troy Rowland basically a club fighter?
Dan Rafael (12:50 PM)
Take out the word "basically."
Omar Henry (Texas)
Godfather, will I be on televised portion of the Azteca card in two weeks?
Dan Rafael (12:50 PM)
I sure hope so.
James (WI)
Why do you have an LA based agent?
Dan Rafael (12:52 PM)
Because that is where he lives. That's his problem, not mine.
Charles (Philly)
DTM, I'm sure you watched the telecast after you got home; at the end, was Lampley talking specifically about Arreola when he said HWs can't take ten days off to drink beer and expect to beat a Klitschko, or was he speaking in generalities?
Dan Rafael (12:52 PM)
I did see it. Jim was speaking in general terms. His point was if you want to beat the Klitschkos, you better be a full time fighter in great shape 365 days a year.
Eric (Irving, TX)
DTM, love the post about B Hop vs RJJ fight. I like the KO bonus. I'd really like that or bigger split to the winner to catch on so we can get more of these hard to make fights.
Dan Rafael (12:53 PM)
I have advocated the true idea of prize fighting for a long time. I think the bonus for a win or KO makes it more interesting for fans, media and the fighters involved. I hope this starts a trend.
Dave (Las Vegas, NV)
What was your reaction to the wonderful piece Thomas Houser wrote about HBO taking 20% off their sports budget for 2010?
Dan Rafael (12:54 PM)
I read it. It would be nice if his figures were accurate, which they were not according to my own information.
Michael Moore (Flint, MI)
Mr. Rafael, I'd like to let you know of the new documentary I am working on. It's called, "The Sanctioning Bodies: A Love Story"
Matt H (Phx, AZ)
Dan, I have read alot of people saying it was lame to see Arreola cry. I think oppostie: this is what "blood, sweat, and tears" is all about. I had no problem with it and when it's the biggest opportunity of your life, you put your soul into it. I am with Arreola.
Chris (Vancouver)
Ah, the notebook is back. I missed you notebook. Dont ever part ways with me again.
rich (cape cod)
Dan of Thunder!! Are u ready for the Sonic Boom (KISS's new cd!)??
Dan Rafael (12:56 PM)
I can't wait! I've been listening the first single on their Web site and I am going to see them when they play in DC in a couple of weeks.
Michael (Toronto)
DTM, am I crazy for finding one-sided Klitschko performances...not boring? I actually kind of enjoy watching their skills on display.
Dan Rafael (12:57 PM)
Apparently a lot of people did. It was the highest rated fight on HBO this year.
Dan Rafael (12:57 PM)
And, no, you are not crazy.
Pete (NY)
Who is the Heavyweight that will give a competitve fight to Vitali or Wladimir?
Dan Rafael (12:59 PM)
I dont see anyone out there right now I would favor against either brother. As far as I can tell, the only one who can beat the other guy right now is if they fought each other.
Kent (St. Catharines)
I completely agree. Vitali is not a great fighter like "The Rock", however his size and reach would be too much for Marciano to overcome.
Dan Rafael (1:00 PM)
Exactly the point I made. It's a physical mismatch of epic propotions.
Erik (Atlanta, GA)
"His game plan is to try to hit me with a power shot and hurt me to get some respect. I am going to weather that storm and come back and hit him with some big shots. " Williams and Pavlik already know its going to be a war I'm too hyped sick quote!
Dan Rafael (1:00 PM)
I can't wait for that fight.
Brian (Toronto)
I'm seeing Kiss tonight.
Dan Rafael (1:01 PM)
Awesome. Have fun.
Ruben (CA)
How much longer before we can see Antonio Margarito in the ring again?
Dan Rafael (1:02 PM)
He can reapply in January.
Adam (Saratoga Springs, NY)
If we are to accept the Ring rankings as the "true" rankings, isn't it very important to monitor who makes them and how they're made? I certainly don't believe we should just blindly accept them just because it's the "Ring." Thoughts?
Dan Rafael (1:03 PM)
I respect them but certainly do no accept them as "true rankings." I do ESPN's rankings and I will put them up against anyone's any day.
Mark (NYC)
Maybe they could replace Boreman-Santos with Thomas Hauser-Ross Greenburg for the November 14th undercard.
Dan Rafael (1:03 PM)
I like that idea. Not because I think Hauser-Greenburg would be much of a fight, but it would be way better than Santos-Boreman.
sergio (san diego)
Danno,How many excuses has shannon briggs used for his loses? walking pnuemonia, ashmtha, the stars weren't aligned...
Dan Rafael (1:04 PM)
I think I may have also heard "Dog ate my jock strap" excuse as well.
Brian (scottsdale, az)
I saw a youtube video of saul alvarez. you weren't kidding with the howdy doody comparisons. Though his power and style are fun to watch.
Dan Rafael (1:05 PM)
He's a very exciting young fighter with a tremendous amount of potential. I really like watching him. I hope he comes to the US at some point because he would a welcome addition to shows on HBO or Showtime.
Jonathan (Northern VA)
Doug Fisher said his ratings would swanton-bomb your ratings through a table off of a 15 foot ladder!
Dan Rafael (1:06 PM)
Dougie didn't say that but he can if he wants. I owe him a huge thanks for saving my ass at the Klitschko-Arreola fight last week when I had a laptop meltdown.
David (Winston-Salem)
Do you see Brian Minto as a truly legitimate US heavyweight contender?
Dan Rafael (1:07 PM)
Not really, not until he steps up his competition.
jeff (Manila)
Dan, late to the chat, bit will take my guess that this has not been asked yet. I was wondering if you knew if the 24/7 crew has been in the Philippines already because it sure would gave a crazy angle with all the Typhoon problems here.
Dan Rafael (1:07 PM)
I don't think so. I belive they will be on the scene for Manny's final week of training there before returning to the US for the last few weeks of his camp.
Dan Rafael (1:12 PM)
Tom is a great writer, a smart guy and a friend, but I felt the piece showed a massive agenda on his part and I don't agree with many of his assertions. I also have my own sources and I believe some of his facts are simply inaccurate. When you write 10 pieces about HBO and every one of them is negative, I have a problem with that. Does HBO deserve some criticism? Absolutely. I have delivered some of my own for sure. But there are lots of good things too. I found the timing surprising as well, considering we were a couple of weeks removed from a massive PPV success and one week removed from the highest rated show of the year, not to mention a couple of days removed from the announcement of a huge HBO fight that is exactly what fans and media want with Pavlik-Williams. Are there some issues and budget problems? Sure. Do I agree with every fight HBO buys? God no. HOWEVER, HBO remains the leader of American televised boxing and puts on a lot more good shows than bad ones.
Craig D. (Philly)
Dan,how many fighters can you add to this list of fighters who cried during a fight or after in the post fight interview?Oliver McCall (during fight)Chris Arreola (post fight interview)Rocky (Adrian!!!!)
Dan Rafael (1:14 PM)
Juan Diaz once cried after a very tough fight on Showtime a few years ago.
Dan Rafael (1:14 PM)
And Buster Douglas had tears in his eyes when talking about his mother after he beat Tyson.
Jonathan (Northern VA)
In response to that answer, thank you for your honesty.
Dan Rafael (1:14 PM)
You got it.
Courtney (Atlanta, GA)
Dan is it weird that Mayweather is a huge PPV star but not much of a box office draw?
Dan Rafael (1:15 PM)
It is a bit odd. But if you could be on, you'd rather draw on PPV than at the gate.
Charles (Philly)
Did BHop confronting press row after the Pavlik fight count as crying?
Dan Rafael (1:16 PM)
He wasn't crying. He was just yelling at us.
juan (sf bay area)
hey dan the man, is there going to be a top rank card on nov 13 th at the mandalay bay casino and do you have any info on who is fighting
Dan Rafael (1:18 PM)
Yes, it will probably be in the Mandalay Bay convention area at the hotel. You can always check the schedule, which you should, but I am in a good mood so I'll give it you as it stands right now: At Las Vegas (Azteca America): Mark Melligan vs. Michel Rosalaes, 10 rounds, welterweights; Z Gorres vs. TBA, 10 rounds, bantamweights; Samuel Peter vs. TBA, 10 rounds, heavyweights.
Ricardo (Bronx, NY)
Hey Dan, reading about Dawson earlier, do you think a one shot move up for Adamek would be worthwhile?
Dan Rafael (1:18 PM)
Well he already beat Adamek with relative ease, so I'm not sure what the point is.
Courtney (Atlanta, GA)
If Roy Jones were to somehow dominate Bernard Hopkins and knock him out, would that somehow boost him back onto the p4p rankings?
Dan Rafael (1:19 PM)
It could. Have to see how the fight goes.
Dave Silva (San Diego)
I strongly believe Andre Ward beats Kessler in November. Am I on to something?
Dan Rafael (1:20 PM)
Of course Ward can win the fight. He's the underdog for a good reason, but I think he has a great shot.
hans (burlington,vt)
Dan...PBF apologized to HBO's Kellerman, Steward, etc during his interview before the Arreola fight last week...seems very un-Floyd...did he receive a lot of criticism from his people on what he said about HBO? Was it sincere in your thoughts? He sold over a million buys...for whatever reason his actions are selling fights....did he need to?
Dan Rafael (1:21 PM)
I don't think it was a very sincere apology. It's not the first time he has ripped the HBO crew and I am sure it won't be the last.
Carlos (D.C.)
Great notebook today, Dan-o. Good to get all the details on this Paulie-Diaz negotiation. You and Raskin are my favorite boxing writers and I couldn't find his weekly column this week, but thank god for the Notebook and Chat from Reliable Rafael!
Dan Rafael (1:22 PM)
Glad you enjoyed. A shoutout for my man Eric Raskin -- perhaps he didn't have a column this week because his wife just had a baby in the past week or so. I am sure he's a little busy with all of that than writing a boxing story.
David (MA)
Does John Ruiz get the mandatory title shot against the Haye-Valuev winner?
Dan Rafael (1:22 PM)
That is supposed to be what happens.
Give Me Freak Status (San Fran)
Getting married at Davis Chapel in San Francisco in six hours...told the future Mrs. French that I had some last minute tux alterations so I can sneak to Starbucks for your chat. Bachelor Party included watch Hearns and Hagler and Tito v. Fernando. Please Freak Status?
Dan Rafael (1:23 PM)
Freak Status. And good luck. Just as an aside, on the morning of my wedding my wife was with her family at the hotel doing bride stuff. I was in our townhouse with my best man. He's a lawyer and was working on a legal brief. I was watching an old HBO card, De La Hoya-Bredahl and the awesome James Toney-Tim Littles fight.
Nick (Los Angeles)
Why is there still hair on your head???
Dan Rafael (1:27 PM)
These things must be planned.
Bing (Philly)
Save it for when FNF premiers again. Can you get Floyd to do the honors?
Dan Rafael (1:28 PM)
If he so desires. However, he has some competition. When I was in LA last week, I ran into Oscar De La Hoya during the undercard near the press room. He said he wanted to shave my head.
mike (costa rica)
dan, dawson didnt beat adamek with ease adamek had him down late and hurt him
Dan Rafael (1:29 PM)
Yeah and Dawson won like every other round with ease. End of the day it was like an 11-1 or 10-2 fight.
Sean (NJ)
why does it always seem Golden Boy fighters are babies? Diaz has NO ONE to fight right now other than Paulie. Nor she he even be thinking of anyone else right now. Chump
Dan Rafael (1:30 PM)
I agree. But it's not so much Diaz. It's his manager, Willie Savannah.
Joe (San Francisco, CA)
Do you think Goosen is going to try to force Guerrero back to fight for him or will it just end up with a financial settlement a la Ortiz and Top Rank?
Dan Rafael (1:31 PM)
No idea. This thing will get ugly. Both sides send out releases that are absolutely contrary to the other's. No idea who to believe.
kevin c. (san jose, CA)
so whats the news on erik morales?
Dan Rafael (1:33 PM)
Nothing new. Says he wants to come back still, but as far as I know there are no concrete plans. He ought to stay retired because it can't end well.
Dan (Brooklyn, NY)
Do you think Arreola can still one day win a title?
Dan Rafael (1:33 PM)
I do think he can if he truly dedicates himself and does not fight a Klitschko again.
Alec (Nashville)
Dan, how high up in weight do you think Roy will go for the Danny Green fight? Do you see his coming back down to 175 to fight Bernard as being a potential stumbling block, ala Tarver after Ruiz?
Dan Rafael (1:34 PM)
The contract weight for Jones and Green, from what Jones' people told me, is 180 pounds, so it's not that big of a deal.
Chris (Columbus, OH)
I'll shave my head if Floyd and Oscar have a rematch to see who gets to shave your head.
Sean (NJ)
don't even joke about a Floyd-Oscar rematch please
Dan Rafael (1:35 PM)
Sorry.
Steve (Hartford)
Is Adamek staying at Heavyweight and vacating the Cruser throne?
Dan Rafael (1:35 PM)
Adamek is fighting Golota at heavyweight but plans to return to cruiserweight. However, you never know if a win will convince him to stay at heavyweight and see what else he can do. It will probably come down to which fights he can make the most money for.
mike (westminster, ca)
Did you think Vitali should have been warned for holding? It seemed like anytime Arreola got close, Vitali simply held the back of his head. Great strategy for the Klitschko brothers if they can get away with it, but makes it virtually impossible for them to be defeated especially if they're pumping their jabs.
Dan Rafael (1:36 PM)
I didn't see that at all. I don't think he held too much at all. There were barely any clinches in the fight.
Paul B (NY, NY)
Dan- sorry I am late to the party. How legit is Poonsawat- could he compete withe the Lopez and Caballero's of the world?
Dan Rafael (1:36 PM)
He looked very good drilling Dunne and is a capable fighter. He can bang a bit. I'd like to see more of him.
Andrew (New York)
Time to answer: You know both well. Who do you think wins the Pavlik/Taylor fight.
Dan Rafael (1:37 PM)
Talk to me in early December.
Wil (AZ)
I am kind of annoyed with how Schafer said it was clear Diaz won the fight. And that there was only scorecard that was in question. Like 116-112 was ok.
Dan Rafael (1:38 PM)
That is his job as a promoter, to back his guy.
Gerardo (Los Angeles)
Dan, I think it's a great move for Bob Arum to put Chavez Jr. on the Cotto-Pac undercard. That can only help the buy rate and it will be important when negotiations start with Mayweather since a big argument will be who is the real draw.
Dan Rafael (1:39 PM)
I can't argue with that. It's just unfortunate the undercard stinks.
Bing (Philly)
Poonsawat sounds like a venerial disease
Dan Rafael (1:39 PM)
Dude that has me cracking up at my computer.
Steve (Hartford)
Any news on Tavoris Cloud's next fight?
Dan Rafael (1:40 PM)
None whatsoever.
Marc (Malden, MA)
Dan, I have a very strange idea, that I wanted to get your thoughts on. When you have a card that has a PPV quality main event, but a terrible undercard, how about putting the undercard on HBO and then have the main event on PPV for $20, instead of the entire card on PPV for $50?
Dan Rafael (1:42 PM)
Sounds nice but the promoters want that other $30 too dude.
Jeff (New Haven)
can you please give me a prediction on dawson vs johnson!
Dan Rafael (1:42 PM)
Before the fight.
Nai (Bay Area)
TGIF, time for another notebook and chat!...First off, thanks for the notebook!...Very excited about the Ward fight coming to town. Do you see a knockout in this fight? I think it will go 12 rounds...I was wondering, what weight do you think FMM came in the ring at?
Dan Rafael (1:43 PM)
I hope the folks in Oakland respond well to having a big fight there. As for Mayweather, I figure on fight night against Marquez, he was probably in the high 150s, maybe even 160.
Sam (Penn State)
Valero = Spanish for disappointment
Greg P (Staten Island,NY)
Dan, how would the course of boxing changed if RJJ would have squared off w/Holyfield years ago?
Dan Rafael (1:45 PM)
I've often said that fight not happening changed this era's history more than any other fight not happening. Had Roy fought Holyfield I believe Roy would have won and would have never have come back to 175, which means he never has a trilogy with Tarver. It also means fights like Tarver-Johnson 1 and 2 probably never happen or at least never on the big HBO level that they did. So many things would have been different.
Eric (Sacramento)
Looking back, when Corrales fought Mayweather, how much of a difference in the fight outcome would have changed if there was not all the distractions Corrales had leading to the fight. Not suggesting Corrales would have one, just wondering how much more competitive it would have been.
Dan Rafael (1:47 PM)
Maybe it would have been a little more competitive, but Floyd probably still would have won. Corrales couldn't touch him at all. I was at that fight and there was such a lot of intensity between the two leading up to the fight. They really did not like each other.
Pistol Pete (NYC)
Dan, I see no mention of David Tua yet in this chat. He seems to have shed a lot of weight. If he impressively KO's Cameron tomorrow, can we see him in a significant fight? He can't be a worse contender than what we saw from Arreola.
Dan Rafael (1:48 PM)
Yeah, he comes out of hibernation tomorrow to fight Cameron, who has never done one thing of note in his career. It may be a big deal in New Zealand, but it really doesn't mean much anywhere else.
Greg P (Staten Island,NY)
Dan, has Luis Collazo signed to fight anyone offically or is everything just hearsay?
Dan Rafael (1:49 PM)
There is a purse bid for the fight with Berto on Oct. 7. If Berto faces Mosley, Berto likely will be stripped and Collazo would be in line to fight for the vacant belt, possibly against Selcuk Aydin from Turkey. I think that would actually be a very good fight.
jeff (phoenix)
Dan,Please explain why you have Wlad ranked above Vitali in you're rankings. I know they will never fight but I can't envision a scenario where Wlad gets the better of it. Vitali is stronger, better chin that allows for more weapons to be used, meaner and bigger....
Dan Rafael (1:51 PM)
Wlad has been active and has more or less cleaned house in the division, won a bunch of belts. His brother was retired for four years and has looked great coming back, but Wlad has bigger, better wins in recent years and more of them.
Guy (California)
What year were RJJ and Holyfield talking of fighting? Was it after Jones beat Ruiz?
Dan Rafael (1:52 PM)
Yes. They were very, very close to making a deal. As I recall, they had planned a press conference, met with MSG folks and were seriously planning the fight.
Cody (Tucson)
If Berto gets stripped what would the point be for Mosley fighting Berto?
Dan Rafael (1:53 PM)
Ummm, because he can make his biggest payday, get a big HBO fight and fight for Mosley's title?
Sam (Penn State)
Is Cotto's belt officially on the line or are they still saying it's only the diamond belt?
Dan Rafael (1:55 PM)
For the 678,534th time, Cotto's WBO title is at stake.
Ron (Bethel, Ct)
Dan curious if your gonna come to my neck of the woods (hartford ct) for the dawson fight also I know its a ways off but what are your thoughts on the angulo vs yorgey matchup...you thinnk yorgey has a chance or is angulo's pressure going to be too much??
Dan Rafael (1:55 PM)
I am planning to make the trip to that one. You just reminded me -- I need to send in my travel paperwork. I do think Yorgey has a chance for the upset, although I am not picking him.
tj (san francisco)
hey dan, i've only heard of selcuk aydin around berto's name. is he a solid and tough fight for anyone at 147?
Dan Rafael (1:56 PM)
Aydin is a very rugged, physical fighter who makes good fights. was a top amateur as well. If was mentioned around Berto because Aydin looms as the mandatory after Collazo. He would fight Collazo for the vacant title if Berto is stripped.
Carlos (Los Angeles)
Shouldn't ALL welterweight championship fights have a limit of 147 pounds?
Dan Rafael (1:57 PM)
I think we've been over this time and again. The answer is no.
Sam (Penn State)
Ben Grossman of Broadcasting and Cable says that boxing NEEDS Kimbo Slice. Ridiculous, very ridiculous, or banishment worthy?
Dan Rafael (1:58 PM)
Anyone who would write such nonsense clearly knows nothing about boxing at all.
jeff (phoenix)
Dan,Please don't try to explain catch weight title fights again to the slow freaks....I would rather watch a hug fest between Ward and Ruiz
Greg P (Staten Island, NY)
Dan, does Pavlik move up to 168 after the Williams fight win or lose?
Dan Rafael (2:00 PM)
I would imagine so.
Carlos (Los Angeles)
Was Cotto forced to accept a catch weight against Pacquiao?
Dan Rafael (2:01 PM)
Forced? No. The weight was negotiated. Nobody held a gun to Cotto's head to accept 145.
Justin (Indianapolis)
A LIMIT IS JUST THAT...A LIMIT!! IT DOESN'T MEAN THE FIGHT HAS TO BE FOUGHT THERE. THE FIGHT CAN BE CONTESTED AT ANY WEIGHT BETWEEN THE MINIMUM AND MAXIMUM (of any division) AND STILL BE CONSIDERED A TITLE FIGHT!!
Dan Rafael (2:02 PM)
What he said. Now, settle down Justin.
Joe (New York)
Dan, any word from Cameron Dunkin on which promoter is going to sign Sergio Mora?
Dan Rafael (2:03 PM)
Not yet. Last we spoke about it when I was in LA last week, he was going to talk to various promoters and see where he could get the best deal for Mora.
Nick (Harrisburg, PA)
I'm imagining Justin screaming at his computer as he typed that
Dan Rafael (2:04 PM)
He was a little excited wasn't he?
John (NYC)
Dan...how many fighters who made their initial mark with a CW title are HOF bound? Only Holyfield?
Dan Rafael (2:05 PM)
It sure looks that way.
Erik (New York City, Queens)
Dan, who would Cris have to face in your opinion in order to reestablish himself as a legitimate contender?
Dan Rafael (2:06 PM)
He could face any number of guys. Beat a guy like Sam Peter, Povetkin, even a Tua and it would go a long, long way.
Steve (NYC)
Will HBO smarten up and put Cunningham- Adamek on?
Dan Rafael (2:07 PM)
I hope they do it eventually. Obviously, Adamek fights Golota first.
Ray (LA)
Dan the ESPN event at the Marine base sounds so cool, especially with the amateur Marines taking part. And more details on how this event came about?
Dan Rafael (2:09 PM)
There's some sort of military appreciattion week or something like that and this is part of it. ESPN has done a show from that base before. Should be fun and will be nice to have live boxing back on ESPN2 during the break between FNF seasons.
Alex (New York)
Are the opening fights of the super-middle tourney on showtime live in the US or tape delay?
Dan Rafael (2:11 PM)
On Oct. 17 there are two fights, Abraham-Taylor from Berlin and Froch-Dirrell from Nottingham, England. The Abraham-Taylor fight will air on Showtime on same day tape on a few hours' delay followed by the live fight between Froch and Dirrell, which will take place at like 1 or 2 am local time.
Dan Rafael (2:11 PM)
We have breaking news from the Bat Phone.
Dan Rafael (2:12 PM)
It seems as though our man Roger Mayweather blew off his court appearance in Vegas today on the battery charge against him and a warrant has been issued for his arrest. What a guy.
Jim (DC)
When is Wladmir fighting next, will it be on HBO?
Dan Rafael (2:13 PM)
Wlad had recent shoulder surgery and probably is out until March. When he comes back, he will likely face one of his mandatory challengets, Eddie Chambers. Whether it's on HBO or any US TV remains to be seen.
Chris (Vancouver)
D$, not sure if you have seen the canadian boxing show " In This Corner" but they were showing you some love the other day. Referring to you as a "top notch" writer.
Dan Rafael (2:15 PM)
Seen it? I have been on it many times and the co-host, Russ Anber, is a friend of mine.
Jim (DC)
When is HBO's next boxing telecast?
Dan Rafael (2:16 PM)
Nov. 7 with Dawson-Johnson II. Followed by Cotto-Pac PPV on Nov. 14 and Bute-Andreade BAD card on Nov. 28 and then Pavlik-Williams on Dec. 5 and a BAD on Dec. 12, probably headlined by Diaz-Paulie 2. That rounds out the HBO sked for the rest of the year.
Roger Mayweather (Vegas)
I am doing my Thanksgiving shopping early, so I am at the store right now. Gatorade and potato chips for everyone!
Steve (NYC)
Vitali's fight in Dec. won't be on HBO?
Dan Rafael (2:18 PM)
Highly unlikely at this point, but I would never say never, especially after such a good rating for his fight last week.
Ross (Indianapolis)
Dan, love the marathon chats! That HBO lineup looks AWESOME for the rest of the year! 5 great fights in 6 weeks, nothing like going out with a bang! Props to HBO
chrisdiggidy (oklahoma city)
how much do you think the ratings for arreola/klitschko were affected by the replay of floyd/jmm? That was the biggest ppv of the year afterall.
Dan Rafael (2:20 PM)
I'm sure it helped a lot but the live fight still did better than the taped fight.
Dan Rafael (2:22 PM)
Jay from Syracuse is banned for a) Being a jerk; b) For asking the same question a million times and killing the queue; and c) For that question sucking. Banishment, eat up.
Randy ((NYC))
What type of drink is sustaining you through the long chat?
Dan Rafael (2:22 PM)
Right now, a little orange juice.
Juan Manuel Marquez (Mexico City, Mexico)
I drink my urine to get me through long chats. Want some?
Dan Rafael (2:24 PM)
Can't go through a whole chat without at least one mention of JMM's urine drinking can we?
Brian (scottsdale, az)
I think the WBA should get Ex-lax or some prune company to sponsor their "regular" titles, since the WBA is full of $*#!
Dan Rafael (2:25 PM)
Well said.
Dan Rafael (2:28 PM)
OK, Freaks, thanks for the chat today. Hope you all have a great weekend (except for that tool Jay from Syracuse, I hope he has a terrible weekend) and enjoy the fights. Make sure to read the notebook, blogs, schedule and rankings. Talk to you next week. Peace.
