Any chance Vince Young starts this week? What do the Titans have to lose, the season is lost.
Chris Mortensen (11:02 AM)
Vince will not start this week. The Titans 0-5 record is shocking and now they play at New England, then a bye. Maybe Vince gets up and playing then because they do need to find out about him or get another QB for the future. But defense has been the primary culprit, not Kerry Collins, to this bad start.
Leif (Los Angeles)
I need a fill-in for Reggie Wayne this week. Who's the better option: Antonio Bryant, Nate Washington or Jeremy Maclin? Appreciate the help. You da man Mort!
Chris Mortensen (11:04 AM)
It would be pretty tempting to go with Jeremy Maclin, though Bryant is a No. 1 for Bucs and they play at home vs Panthers. Maclin has McNabb as a QB, coming off a big game, going to Oakland on Sunday.
Mort, Dont you feel trading B Quinn is a mistake by the Browns? Not only did they not find out if he is an NFL quarterback, D.A. is Vinny Testaverde all over again. Tall, big arm, throws to wrong team...
Chris Mortensen (11:06 AM)
You are far too degrading of Vinny Testaverde and Derek Anderson. There are a lot of components to a QB success. However, I would not trade Brady Quinn. He looked good when he played a year ago. He was 9-for-39 on third down passing in the new system. And, let's face it, when you are breaking in rookies WRs and Winslow is gone, then it's a tough deal for any QB.
RJ (New York)
The Titans have moved away from 2 back offense, it appears that Johnson will be the focus of the running game. Why? And will it change? The 2 back running game works, wouldn't you agree..
Chris Mortensen (11:08 AM)
I'm betting you'll see Titans get back to the Chris Johnson and Lendale White like last year. And, yes, they're 0-5, but they could have won three of thse games. But running the ball with Johnson and White is part of their successful identity.
Bill (New York )
Giant fans are psyched about Bradshaw and he should start over Jacobs. If he continues to play this way the GMen may not be able to afford him after next year. I say sign him now for big bucks he is a playa.
Chris Mortensen (11:09 AM)
Jacobs and Bradhaw are very strong 2-running back tandem. I'd try to sign Bradshaw, too, if you can do it but you can't overpay (and remember, Jacobs just got a nice deal). But Bradshaw looks terrific, yes.
Do you have any further insight into Megatron's injury status? I know they keep injury information Belichick-like in so many places now. Would Bryant Johnson or Northcutt be a safer start?
Chris Mortensen (11:10 AM)
I'd be very nervous about Calvin Johnson this week. He may not play but we're waiting to hear more.
Kevin (Franklin Square)
Mort, If the Vikings win the division and go deep into the playoffs and the Packers dont even make it to the playoffs, do you see Ted Thompson/Mike McCarthy being on the hot seat for the way they handled the Favre situation?
Chris Mortensen (11:13 AM)
Not at all! You can poll GM/coaches in this league and most say they would have made same decision. Let me ask you this: What would have happened to Brett if he had that Packers' O-line against that Vikings' D-line? Thompson and McCarthy just need to get the O-line better. Obviously, not as good as they thought. But you keep coaching 'em and hopefully they improve. But Aaron Rodgers would get the nod from almost everyone I know in the league, as much as we enjoyed Brett's terrific game.
With Aaron Smith now out for the year, are the Steelers possibly the 3rd best team in their own division?
Chris Mortensen (11:14 AM)
I believe Smith's injury - now on injured reserve - is a huge blow. Too early to tell if they're "third best" in a very strong AFC North.
Will Matt Jones ever find a team??? Why is noone picking him up?
Chris Mortensen (11:16 AM)
Jones worked out Tuesday for Tampa. I'md told he caught the ball very well but they Yamon Figurs ran 4.4 and can't forget the special teams factor. The Bucs still will consider Jones, along with a few other teams. But one thing I've heard consistently - not being in anybody's camp or off-season program makes teams a little hesitant on Jones, though he caught 65 balls in 12 games last year.
Do you feel Kubiak is bordering on crazy for continuing to give Chris Brown goal line touches? Will they even run inside the 5 anymore or will my boy Schaub become pass happy when knocking on the door?
Chris Mortensen (11:20 AM)
Coaches work very hard on having a lot of information and tendencies when they make certain calls. I didn't like it. I'm sure Kubiak didn't like it because it didn't work. I think running down there generally works better when you spread it out if you happen to be an efective passing team. When you have some huge, good-hands targets like Andre Johnson, Kevin Walter
Do you think Jason Garrett should show more confidence in his RBs late in the game?
Chris Mortensen (11:22 AM)
All his RBs were banged up late in the game. When he has a healthy Barber, Jones & Choice, sure, run it more. Maybe Miles Austin has arrived which should make this Dallas offense special again.
Ricky (Houma La)
Mort who is under the most pressure in this weekend matchup of the Saints and Giants
Chris Mortensen (11:24 AM)
Giants offense because Saints crowd will make it very difficult on Eli & O-line. That's why running ball is critical. Playing in the Superdome will be much more challenging than playing in Cowboys Stadium with 105,000 fans. Trust me.
do you think mike shanahan's value goes down because of denver's recent success without him? you think theres an outside shot that the CHARGERS will go for him? wouldnt that be something else!!!
Chris Mortensen (11:26 AM)
I don't think Shanahan's stock goes down. Everyone knows they lost 7 running backs and had injuries on defense, including Champ Bailey playing fairly hurt last year. He also left that O-line, one of best in NFL. But I'm very impressed with Broncos and I think they just might win AFC West regardless of whether they beat Chargers this Sunday. Yes, they have a shot to win this week.
Any chance the Raiders Sign Garcia and stick him at Starting QB? They need to develop their young WR and Bush and McFadden who all have talent. Russell is helping the whole offense regress!
Chris Mortensen (11:27 AM)
Jeff Garcia hasno desire to sign with Raiders, based on what I've heard.
Dungy left a decent TB team and was replaced by Gruden who made them more aggressive on defense and then won the SB his first year. Dungy left a superb Colts team and was replaced by Caldwell (and Coyer) who has them more aggressive on defense....same SB result?
Chris Mortensen (11:29 AM)
Maybe but Tony won a Super Bowl with Indy. And if you talk to players from the Bucs and Colts, they echo something similar - Tony left a lasting culture of trust
do you think the browns will fire mangini at seasons end or before
Chris Mortensen (11:32 AM)
No, they will not fire Mangini. I do think they can make some adjustments in personnel. First of all, Randy Lerner never should have fired Phil Savage. When you are building, have a plan, you just don't fire capable people because of some potholes. Now you start all over with a new plan. And Mangini did win 2 out of 3 years with Jets. Who knows what would have happened if Brett not hurt last year. And Parcells/Belichick/Coughlin/McDaniels guys all practice the same philosophy. Team, team, team, grind, grind, grind.
Hey Mort, sorry to keep asking you about this, but after watching that 30 for 30 documentary I can't help but feel ill about the Browns.....and defnintely jealous of the old Browns. 11 years and nothing....excuse me, one play-off appearance that they totally lucked into. How does this happen? How can a team go through 3 GM's, 6 head coaches, and 9 opening day qb's? Doesn't this failure fall straight on the owner?
Chris Mortensen (11:34 AM)
Yes, without question. The Browns failures fall on owner, although Randy Lerner inherited ownership when his father tragically died from brain tumor.
How will Dallas Clark be affected by the return of Gonzo after the Colts' bye?
Chris Mortensen (11:36 AM)
I think the bigger question is how will it affect Pierre Garcon, who has primarily been playing Gonzalez' spot. Or how will it affect Gonzalez, who is at least 2-3 weeks away from being ready.
sean g (nyc)
why cant we show mcnabb props he had a broken rib not some foot problem eli had threw for 3 tds and have one point off a better passer rating than eli and played the whole game still dont get no love from espn
Chris Mortensen (11:38 AM)
I didn't know that happened. Both deserved props no matter who they were playing (Bucs & Raiders).
Chris (Holmdel, NJ)
Chris, I know you have Mike Shanahan as the odds on coach of the Cowboys next year but I've read that he's committed to Bob Slowik as his defensive coordinator. How could that ever work in Dallas as their defense personnel fits a 3-4 and Slowik is a 4-3 coach from the Dave Wanstadt/Jimmy Johnson tree??
Chris Mortensen (11:39 AM)
Love the question and here's what I love about Shanahan. Him and Slowik have spent a lot of time studying tape and visiting with teams that run the 3-4.
sarah harvey (richmond vriginia)
I would like to know why a kid have so much trouble with trying to go to college and play pro football. He is a great football player, and everyone is telling every thing wrong. All this kid needs is to have good coach that is willing to take chance with him.He want go wrong. This kid is a very great football player.
Chris Mortensen (11:40 AM)
Who we talking about? Brady Quinn?
What do you think about the Vikings record so far? Will Favre hold up? What do you see in the next weeks?
Chris Mortensen (11:44 AM)
Vikings have exact record I expected, given their record and getting Packers at home. Now, they get Ravens at home - they should win but not necessarily a given. But they have a heck of a team in many areas. Their Super Bowl chances probably will hinge on Brett's ability to not wear down and they have a plan for that. I can see them going 14-2 or 13-3, home field, and watch out.
Marc (Malden, MA)
Did you see the report that Daniel Snyder wants Jon Gruden to be his head coach next season? What do you think about Gruden in Washington?
Chris Mortensen (11:45 AM)
I think Snyder would take any of the big "four" - Shanahan, Holmgren, Cowher or Gruden. One thing that looks good for Gruden is look what happened to Raiders and Bucs when he left.
Rob (Lynbrook, NY)
Hey Mort, did you get a chance to see Ziggy Hood in training camp. If so, do you think he is ready to step in and contribute?
Chris Mortensen (11:47 AM)
My stay with Steelers was for one unpadded practice in camp so didn't get to see a lot. But they obviously like Hood. Doesn't mean that Aaron Smith can be replaced. He was playing as well as ever, I think.
Mort, I remember the last Browns coach coach that came in and started cutting players and all of NE ohio was livid (Not me) and they were calling for him to be fired also... So I say to all of you whom are upset at the way Mangini is running things to let him run the team. Oh and by the way... that coach I was talking about was none other than Bill Belicheck, and I dare say if he was still here we might have a title or 2. Please be patient
Chris Mortensen (11:49 AM)
Yeah, I'm pretty big on patience. I really wish fans would sound off but without wanting to fire everyone. Savage never should have been fired. And Mangini's record with Jets - combined with the track records of that coaching tree, which does have some uncomfortable transitions - demands patience. We knw how great Cleveland fans are. we know how much it hurt to lose the team to Baltimore. But don't exacerbate it.
Should Roger Goodell resign for words he stated about Limbaugh and the bid on the Rams?
Chris Mortensen (11:51 AM)
I didn't see or hear anything that Goodell said that would suggest he should resign. At least he answered the question.
Patrick (Buffalo, NY)
Why do you hate Bills fans?
Chris Mortensen (11:53 AM)
And what has given you that idea? Bills fans are mostly wonderful when they stay within the bounds of decency. I don't want to see the Bills leave Buffalo. All I have said is that when John Butler left, he opened my eyes to some serious issues that really have nothing to do with the fans.
Chris Mortensen (11:55 AM)
I have to run now. Really enjoyed it. Please get word out that I'm also available on Twitter.com @mortreport during the week. Sunday NFL Contdown @ 11 a.m. ET.
