Is Pisa done?
Jurko (12:31 PM)
I hope not. You saw him fill a hole and he's got a real good feel for this defense.
Ryan (Moline, IL)
Please tell me why the Bears didn't try play-action when they had 1st and goal at the 1 that led to the Forte fumbles?
Jurko (12:32 PM)
I like passing the ball close to the goal line when they anticipate the run. I like play action at the goal line. You saw what the Bears could do when they have to get a yard - not much. Kreutz was getting pushed back consistently. Our Hawaiian friend had a Frank Omiyale game.
chris (arlington hts)
what needs to be done to get the offensive line going? do they still "need time to gel" ? the running game is struggling BIG TIME and cutler seems to be throwing off his back foot or on the run far too often.
Jurko (12:33 PM)
What this OL needs is a visit to the fountaion of youth. They're old, and their age is showing. They need to get things together now, but I don't think they have the requisite skill at this point of their careers to be able to dominate a defensive line.
Matt Prang (Delaware)
I want to know what the benefit of trading our 1st overall draft pick (2nd rounder) next year to the bucs for an unproven player with a big contract in gaines adams, when we already have depth at that position. We have more pressing needs such as the entire secondary, DT, and missing a big WR and RB. I always give the Bears front end credit, but aside from Cutler they make boneheaded trades that never work. What benefit is this adams guy?
Jurko (12:36 PM)
First of all, it's not a big-money contract. All the bonus money was paid and absorbed in a salary-cap hit for the Buccaneers. The Bears are only on hook for his base salaries, and any bonuses he achieves based on peformance. He was the No. 4 overall pick by the Bucs, and he plays in this system - the Tampa 2. So yeah, there are pressing needs in a lot of places, but both Mark Anderson and Adewale Ogunleye are going to be free agents after this season.
esteban (austin TX)
jurko tell me you think the bears blew this game because ron turner failed to not open up the playbook. atlanta consistenly had two deep safetys over the top the bears could have went deep over the middle with knox or down the sideline. why didn't they?
Jurko (12:38 PM)
They did. They went to Olsen twice deep. Once he caught it, and once it was intercepted because Olsen adjusted his route inside. He hit Knox on a deep route for a TD. The fade, 25 yards, that's a deep ball. And one time he went deep to Knox, but he didn't catch it inbounds. I thought they went deep enough. You need to look at execution, guys not blocking, RBs not making people miss, instead of everybody trying to blame Ron Turner. Every week I see teams getting to goal line and they run a G play or pulling guard and teams score TDs every week, but the Bears can't execute properly. Blame the players.
What has happened to devin aromashodu, i thought he was supposed to be a key weapon for cutler, and did you think atlanta beat us or we lost
Jurko (12:39 PM)
That's tricky. Can't both things happen at the same time? I think we beat ourselves. The Bears beat themselves, and Atlanta did just enough to get a victory at home. We're waiting for DA to do something. He's healthy. It's goign to take an injury to get him in the starting lineup right now. Just the way it is.
Tyler (Nashville, TN)
Did Cutler's poor machanics finally catch up with him in last nights game? He had numerous balls thrown high or behind his recievers not allowing them to get many yards after the play.
Jurko (12:42 PM)
I don't know if I agree with that. Let me talk about the Olsen interception. They showed an end zone view from behind Cutler. Olsen gets an outside release and is taking it straight down the field. The ball is goign to be placed in the void between the LB in coverage and the deep S in coverage, Cutler sees that, throws to where Olsen was running, after the ball is released, Olsen starts to break inside on a 45. Ball's already gone. To me, that pick is half on Olsen half on Cutler. He has to throw the ball where he believes the receiver is going to be, not to where the receivers decideds he'll go after the ball is thrown.
Kevin Hense (Chicago)
Is it me, or is Matt Forte hitting the ground a lot easier this season? I know the line hasn't helped him much, but it seems as though he's missing some of the toughness and determination he showed last year.
Jurko (12:43 PM)
Yes. He's a different player. To me has Anthony Thomas disease. If you had to ask Jerry Angelo if he's a special back, I think Jerry Angelo would have to say no.
Lou Moreno (Bolingbrook,IL.)
Where do you feel that the Bears need the most work?? O-line D-line? Special-Teams? What?? Im interested to listen in what you tink..GoCARAVAN!!!!!!!!
Jurko (12:44 PM)
The OL needs work but you're not going to make them stronger, faster or smarter. The only thing you can do is get them in right place, right time with good technique. Technique is only thing able to help these guys with. Bears need most work on OL and kickoff coverage. I think D played well enough to win the game, but when you had chances to pick up a fubmle or make an int., you need to do it.
Dan (Cambrdge UK)
I know the Bears had a terrible outing all-around last night, but the running game has not been there all year.. if the O-line can't make the holes, why is Turner not mixing in more play-fakes to screens and then run? I mean seriously is there any creativity in Turner's playcalling in the running game?
Jurko (12:45 PM)
Are you watching the same game I'm watching? I'm watching screens left and right. Exactly what you're saying is what I saw. Cross plays, etc. Some things you can't do with the personnel they have. Pace is probably 75 percent of the player he was, which means still good, but can't ask him to pull.
Ryan (Evergreen Park, IL)
Is the Bears Offensive Line worse this year than last year?
Jurko (12:46 PM)
Looks like they're getting old in front of my eyes at an exponential rate.
Varun (Aurora, IL)
Forte and Wolfe are not cutting it. Kevin Jones is on IR and has been a failure. Is it time to bring in some new guys on this team? DeDe Dorsey, Rudi Johnson and Deuce McAllister ring a bell.
Jurko (12:46 PM)
They all ring a bell, but the only one I'd be interested in is Dorsey.
I'm a diehard Bears fan stuck up here in Minneapolis, the new Brett Favre country. One of the worst parts of losing to Atlanta is having to hear the Vikings fan chant 6-0 and worship Brett Favre like he's Jesus. The Bears have a lot of work to do, especially upfront on the offensive line. Do you think that the Bears are still a playoff team or should we start wondering how we are going to rebuild without any top draft picks???
Jurko (12:48 PM)
I think they're still a playoff team and I'm not going to overreact to a 7-point loss and we're in the red zone and moved the ball the way they moved the ball. Winnable game against Cincinnati and they'll be 4-2. Simple formula in the NFL, win home game, split road games and end up 12-4.
What are you thoughts on the Bears game plan for Atlanta? Excluding the poor execution (Special Teams) and mistakes (Fumbles, False Starts), the Bears did a good job containing Ryan and Turner based on the stats. Are there positives after this game?
Jurko (12:49 PM)
Oh yeah, positives, there were opportunities to get turnovers. If the QB wants to get rid of the ball, that ball is gone. Maybe Cutler can learn that from Matt Ryan. Sometimes nothign there, chuck the ball at the feet of the receiver. So yeah, return game great and put themselves in great field position.
what is with forte really having no vision, does he not get that he can bounce things outside, and also seems like he goes down with the lightest tackles and foot tackles...last year he seemed to be so much more of a powerful runner....dont you think a bootleg on the goal line would be a better play then sweep to the left with cutlers abilities.
Jurko (12:50 PM)
Well I'm shocked at his inability and his lack of vision this year. His confidence is shot because of the realization that he's running behind a Rip Van Winkle-like OL; this geriatric group that belongs in a nursing home.
Erik (Crown Point)
Why does Omiyale still have a job?
Jurko (12:51 PM)
The Forte fumble at the goal line, Omiyale fires out at Babineaux, he's got the better of him, got him beat, all he has to do is hook him, and Babineaux is not in the play. But Omiyale quits moving his feet, Babineaux crosses his face and forces the fumble. Now, Frank had him beat, and didn't finish the play.
Tommy (Downtown Chicago)
When do we get to fire Jerry Angelo and his mime puppet Lovie Smith?
Jurko (12:52 PM)
If they don't make the playoffs, both of them need to go. Playoffs or bust for these two.
steve (calumet city IL)
did nic roach's inexperience catch up with him yesterday the defense looked so good in the 1st quarter did the offense leave them out to dry?
Jurko (12:53 PM)
In the sugar huddle. When they went sugar huddle, that's when they needed a veteran guy in there. And the goal line play at the end of the half where Gonzalez caught the TD, Roach was standing flat-footed that's such a short area, he needed to have more depth and realize Gonzalez would be running at the back of the end zone.
at what level do the small things go out the window?? Briggs for the second week in a row failed when he tried to scoop and score on a fumble instead of just falling on the loose ball which is taught to you in pee-wee football, also on both forte fumbles he had the ball in one hand not covering it with both which would seem to me what you want to do when jumping over a pile of 300 pounders and when you are absorbing a hit on a sweep play? please explain
Jurko (12:54 PM)
At that point in the game, that would have been a monumental momentum shift for the Bears. You're taught as a player if you can scoop it and run, scoop it and run. If there's a lot of traffic fall on it. He's one of those players I would have told to pick it up and run, but he blew it.
A. Aranda (Chicago, IL )
Were our Corners playing too far back knowing it was a 2nd and short or 3rd and short? Why don't they play tight or bump at the line? This puts our D-line in a bad position where the quarterback can use a 2 step drop and unload!
Jurko (12:55 PM)
They're changing up coverages, sometimes playing 3 deep, tryign to make it look like it's 2-deep. And they're in a bail technique after that. But you should have LBs buzzing to the flats and they were nowhere to be found.
John (San Diego)
Bears will be fine... but how bout getting a bigger reciever ?...I love hester, Bennett and knox.. but they need just a little more there... i know the talk is TO but how about D Bowe ??
Jurko (12:56 PM)
No TO. Owens is terrible. Bowe is not going anywhere. He's going to stay in KC becaus he is by far their best receiver. Aromashodu is the only answer.
ok last question, does cutler go to the probowl this year
Jurko (12:56 PM)
Not at this pace.
Do you think Favre is on something? How is he playing like he's 25 again?
Jurko (12:57 PM)
He's got a talented group around him. He's not carrying the whole team on his shoulders and he's very capable of making the throws because he's healthy.
What is the difference this year Matt Forte from last year Matt Forte? Lets get him some more touches and more opportunity to rip of some big plays, screens or runs.
Jurko (12:57 PM)
With so many injuries at the linebacker position, do you think the Bears will try to make a trade for one? Are there any free agent LB's out there we could pick up off the waiver wire that would make a difference?
Jurko (12:58 PM)
There's been so many injuries at the LB position, Buffalo has lost four guys, we've lost a couple, what's out there is the bottom of the barrel.
Daniel (Van Horn TX.)
I honestly think Cutler is a little over rated yeah he got the rocket arm but sometimes it gets away from him. Someone said last week that they would take ryan over cutler any day because of his lack of consistency and to tell you the truth I really don't like his attitude and his body language almost seems like he is not happy in Chicago
Jurko (12:58 PM)
Some of his decision making is poor. I'd love to see him throw the ball away, especially in the red zone. Three points are better than none.
How was the defense not ready for the no huddle? was it nick roach or lack of coaching?
Jurko (12:59 PM)
Combination of both. LB needs to be able to anticipate the call, and the coaches may have just assumed he would be.
do you think the last pass by cutler could have been caught if the receiver put more effort? Desmond clark did not try that hard. i think a more established receiver would have made that catch with one hand
Jurko (1:00 PM)
I think he was bumped into initially, and I don't think Cutler saw the dropping DL. It was a combination.
Is that guy serious with that pro bowl question? I've not seen anything from Cutler that's been impressive outside of some impressively dumb decisions with the football this season. STOP THROWING IT UP FOR GRABS JAY!
Jurko (1:00 PM)
Cutler has had 3 great games, and two awful games. That does not a Pro Bowler make. He is by far the most talented QB the Bears have seen in 40 years.
shouldnt the bears fire turner and hire shanahan?
Jurko (1:01 PM)
If you do that, Shanahan is your next head coach. Are you ready to make that decision now? If they don't make the playoffs, I'd fire Lovie and hire Shanahan.
Jurko (1:02 PM)
Ok guys, have to get ready for the show. Thanks for the great questions. Come back Thursday at 10:30 a.m. when the chat room opens with Jeff Dickerson. Till then, ...
