AJ Mass (10:57 AM)
Good morning gang! No coffee this morning... a bit under the weather. Although we never say we're over the weather if we're feeling good. What up with that? Who's up first for fantasy chattage?
Mel T (Indiana)
Flex position dilemma?Beanie Wells or Bryant Johnson?
AJ Mass (10:58 AM)
I like Bryant this week. I'm not sure Megatron is quite ready to play and the Rams are not so good defensively.
Paul (Helena, Montana)
Is Kellen Winslow droppable? I have brent celek.....
AJ Mass (10:59 AM)
Generally speaking, I never carry more than 1 TE in my leagues. Celek is a guy I'd feel comfortable starting each week, so I'd rather have the roster spot for depth.
My opponent has Jay Cutler as his QB. Should I start Greg Olsen or Brent Celek?
AJ Mass (11:01 AM)
Another question about playing "defense" in fantasy football. It's not worth it. Take Cutler out of the equation and start Celek, who should be able to put up a good day vs. NYG.
How much of an impact do you think Anthony Gonzales will have when he returns to action?
AJ Mass (11:02 AM)
Little to none. Didn't like him going into the season healthy, but figured the Colts had little else. Now I know, and more importantly, Indy knows they do. Collie and Garcon have been fine.
Why is Wells ranked higher than Hightower? That was only 1 game!! Hightower or Fargas for this week? Hope you feel better soon!
AJ Mass (11:03 AM)
One week of Beanie being good, but several of Timmy not so much.Yeah, he's had TD's in 3 straight, but the YPC is ugly and the carries themselves are slowly trickling away. I go Justin's way.
is addai better than bradshaw for the rest of the season? in a keeper?
AJ Mass (11:05 AM)
With Brown banged up, I'd say yes. In a keeper, my fear would be that Bradshaw eventually pulls a Ward and drops off the fantasy landscape - but I don't see Addai catching on elsewhere either... Might go with Ahmad there.
Favre or Hasselbeck this week?
AJ Mass (11:06 AM)
I'm not betting against Brett this week. The head says it's Matt, but admit it, none of us would be shocked if Favre had a 5 TD first half, would we?
I am stuck scrambling for a quarterback this week and have only Culpepper, Delhomme, Young, and Russell to choose from. Awful, I know! Which one would you go with?
AJ Mass (11:07 AM)
Culpepper. I don't think Stafford plays. As for VY, we'll see if Fisher wants to be fired or not. If he does, and I think he might want to, we won't see Vince.
I have both a banged up Calvin and a banged up Boldin. Would you hold either one of them out this week, even if they start?...or have they achieved "if they start for their team, they start for mine" status?
AJ Mass (11:09 AM)
I think players who are banged up and miss practice as a matter of course (Wes Welker comes to mind) and end up as game-time decisions I'd startif they start. But players who have seen decline in practice solely due to an injury that has not yet proven to be "par for the course" like Mega and Anquan, I say if they are a game-time decision, it's probably as good as being out.
Is it too early to scoop up Jamaal Charles for someone like Fred Jackson or Glen Coffee who are just handcuffs at this point?
AJ Mass (11:10 AM)
No. I'd take the chance on both Charles and Kolby Smith this week - they won't be available next week when owners who didn't notice them with the KC bye wake up.
Why no love for a healthy C Buckhalter? ?ESPN ranking: 36, Moreno: 20. Buck has been the more productive back. He?s getting touches, he?s a good receiver, and Denv coaches might go with the veteran over the rookie against a smart, physical defense. What gives?
AJ Mass (11:12 AM)
I'm not sure, but the ESPN Projections have CB at 12 and Knowshon at 6 points, which seems more in line with your thinking.
John (North Carolina)
I am in a bad spot this week with my defense. Would you take Lions versus the Rams and hope for lots of turnovers or play the 49ers versus the Colts or the Falcons versus the Saints. Please help!!
AJ Mass (11:13 AM)
Lions no doubt. They've actually been a pretty good unit this year. Only one bad game against the Bears, but other than that, plenty of sacks and a good 6-8 points each week.
Z. Miller, Donald Lee, or Marcedes Lewis this week?
AJ Mass (11:14 AM)
Zach's the most talented IMO, but don't trust the Raiders one iota. I'd go with Marcedes.
Dr. Phil (Chicago)
Ricky Williams had a great week, but was this a one week deal or a sign of things to come? Would you start him over Housh at the flex?
AJ Mass (11:16 AM)
I would, but that's a knock on Housh. I actually don't like Miami in any of their three "repeat" games against the AFC East. That wildcat simply doesn't work the second-time around as well as it does the first time.
what are your thoughts AJ and his injury? eli or orton from here on out? thanks
AJ Mass (11:18 AM)
Eli. He's not flashy, but Steve Smith and Mario are both in the top-15 of WR! As for AJ, whenever the word "lung" is used I worry. "Chest" not scary to me... "lung"? I'm hesitant.
Am I nuts for thinking about sitting McNabb (vs NYG) in favor of Garrard (vs TEN)?
AJ Mass (11:19 AM)
Only because of the bye week is this an issue. Bud Adams wants changes. He wants Vince Young. Jeff Fisher doesn't. This could well be a game the players show us if they want Jeff Fisher or not going forward. If so, Garrard could be in trouble. I'm going McNabb.
AJ please help me out here Im 7-0 right now and projected to get killed this week I have Farve or McNabb at QB and Minn D or Lions D who do I start thanks in advance.
AJ Mass (11:20 AM)
You're 7-0. Who should I start this week, Merrill?
I'm in bye week hell. Do I play Fred Jackson or pick up Justin Fargas. These are my ONLY Choices!
AJ Mass (11:20 AM)
Go with Fargas. He'll get touches.
Another Flex question, who do you like out of Shonn Green, McCoy, Jennings or Devin Hester this week?
AJ Mass (11:22 AM)
I like Jennings. Shonn has to do it in a game where the other team is ready to meet him for me to trust him. McCoy would be second. Hester is good one week, bad the next.
Mike (NY, NY)
AJ - a follow up to the Garrad Q. I think your point re: player motivation is a good one, but the Titans D has been horrible. Would the bye have helped this? I don't know...would you go Flacco over Garrard?
AJ Mass (11:25 AM)
They have been horrible... but there's talent there. I don't believe taking Haynesworth away turns the whol eunit to mush... They played well in Week 1, and after a few close losses spiraled out of control. Now, if they lose this week, forget them - they'll pack it in for sure. But if there's anychance for a turnaround, this is the week. I still go Garrard over Flacco though. Denver D is solid.
Dan (Ann Arbor)
You think Johnny Knox gets in the end zone this week versus the woeful Browns? I'm contemplating using him in a spot start because of this matchup?
AJ Mass (11:26 AM)
Fools errand to project TD's, Dan. You know this. Knox will pull in 4-5 balls.
Have you heard any rumors about KC dumping LJ?
AJ Mass (11:28 AM)
Nothing new since the two-week suspension which covers the bye week plus one. I think at this point they may simply declare him inactive rather than cut him so he doesn't have the ability to play elsewhere.
If a team is 6-1, what do you think of making trades for appealing playoff matchups?
AJ Mass (11:29 AM)
If we're talking bench players, then I can see it. However, all it takes is one Leon Washington injury to ruin your whole post-season plans. I'm all for tweaking, but I'm not going to base trades on who might be a better play in Week 15 two months in advance.
Get well soon (New Orleans)
Who do you like more, both with tasty matchups, Kevin Smith or Matt Forte?
AJ Mass (11:30 AM)
Both are indeed tasty. I've gotta roll with my Motown man Cutback Suarez.
Guy dropped Calvin Johnson. Worth dropping Jennings for him?
AJ Mass (11:32 AM)
Why? Drop your second defense or tight end or fifth RB.
I understand that during the Mon. night game, Campbell had to yell "BINGO" over to the sideline after he got the play call or Lewis would just keep calling out numbers/plays.
AJ Mass (11:33 AM)
Jason wins comment of the day.
Huggie Bear's Son (CA)
Me (jfargas) or Shonn Green? PPR
AJ Mass (11:35 AM)
Again, I'm not sold on Shonn and if there's one matchup that looks good on paper for Fargas, it's SD.
Julius Jones (Seattle)
Do I have any fantasy relevance the rest of the year, even as a RB2/Flex vs favorable matchups?
AJ Mass (11:36 AM)
If you asked me to name all the RBs in the NFL, the only way I'd come up with you is if when I said "Jones" for Thomas, I also got credit for you.
Jackson (Los Angeles)
I currently have the Packers as my starting defense this week; would I be better off picking up the Cardinals and starting them instead?
AJ Mass (11:37 AM)
I'd do that. While it's true that GB could be just as geeked up as Favre, the fact is Delhomme has in fact not been the homme at all this year.
Frank (New Jersey)
Sammy Morris update?
AJ Mass (11:38 AM)
You can't get updates out of NE when they have a game on Sunday. Forget about finding out anything on a bye week, my friend.
Per your "Don't carry more that one TE" suggestion, I have both Heath Miller and Greg Olsen in a 12-team league. They're both pretty evenly rated week after week although Miller's schedule looks a little easier from this point on. Would you drop one for an extra RB/WR?
AJ Mass (11:40 AM)
I prefer Miller as well, and the bye week is no longer an issue after this weekend. But rather than drop, I'd first explore the trade route. Pickings will be better in most leagues than what is left on the waiver wire, especially at RB.
Which WR do you see making the most plays this week,Terrell Owens, Percy Harvin, or Micheal Crabtree?
AJ Mass (11:41 AM)
Keith (Clearwater, FL)
In response to the "Why do you carry more than one TE" question that pops up so much. In our league you must carry 2 TE's, K's, and Def's so you have a back up for bye weeks. Cuts down on dozens of transactions when bye weeks come up. Betting we are not the only league that does that. Does that make sense?
AJ Mass (11:44 AM)
Obviously, if it's in your rules, you have to do it. In my leagues, I used to have a "bye week pickup rule" where twice a season you could cut a player from your roster at TE/K/D and claim a bye-week replacement and the following week, it would automatically switch back. That also works well in deeper keeper leagues with smaller rosters.
Would you go with Pierre Thomas, Mike Bell, or Ahmad Bradshaw this week for RB2?
AJ Mass (11:46 AM)
I'd go with Bradshaw. I think one of the Saints guys out-performs him, but I also think one doesn't, and I'd rather take the "sure points".
Do you think Kevin Walter has any value going forward?
AJ Mass (11:47 AM)
I'm still of the opinion that, given the chance, Jacoby Jones has the most upside on that WR roster. Walter will have some good games, but not on an every week basis.
All knowing fantasy God...why doesn't espn publish your weekly rankings along with Berry and Karabell? I would like to see them.
AJ Mass (11:49 AM)
Thanks for the support, Adam, but I am quite busy handling other things during the NFL season. Many savvy fans have been able to figure out where to find my rankings.
You thoughts on Djax and Hester this week?
AJ Mass (11:51 AM)
Hester is incredibly frustrating to me. I own him in several leagues and it always seems I sit him when he shines and vice versa. I'd go D-Jax - because I'm starting Hester myself.
I've been shopping Mendenhall for a WR2, but nobody in my league is biting (including folks with dicey RB situations). Am I not being realistic as far as his value?
AJ Mass (11:53 AM)
In some leagues, you simply can't trade. If you're stuck with owners who simply are unwilling to take chances or to evaluate talent in a "realistic" manner, you're stuck. I'd trade leagues next season in the hopes of finding owners who are a little more open to changes.
tyger (davenport, IA)
Braylon settle into his role as #1 in NY and settle into a WR1 or WR2 for my team?
AJ Mass (11:54 AM)
Me think so.
AJ, during your baseball chats, it seemed like everyone was fighting with you... has that calmed down, or are you just ignoring the jerks?
AJ Mass (11:57 AM)
LOL. Daniel, the fact is with baseball, few people watch as many games as those of us who have the lucky job of doing so. BUT, fans of one particular team are far more "knowledgeable" than I will ever be on that one team - since I don't watch all 162 games as closely. That causes more conflict... with the NFL, we all can watch all the games. That lends itself to me having just as much info on each team as even the biggest fans.
How productive do you think Antonio Bryant will be now for the rest of the season with Freeman as QB?
AJ Mass (11:59 AM)
How productive was he with Leftwich or Johnson? Not much. It's sadly not the QB, but his own injury woes which never left him this year. A shame, because I thought he could repeat last year's numbers.
My girlfriend and I are in the same league, and she is stacked at RB and WR. Should I broach the subject of a possible trade where I would send Schaub/Beanie Wells/Greg Jennings for Ray Rice/Miles Austin/Warner?
Henry (Miami, FL)
AJ, I enjoy your blog! Real quick...was offered Big Ben for Matt Ryan, what do you think? PPR format.
AJ Mass (12:02 PM)
If the league let you and your girl in and trading is allowed, then by all means make a deal... but if there's a veto vote, expect them to raise an eyebrow. Your moves will be subject to extra scrutiny, justified or not. Thanks, Henry. (Mass Confusion on blogger) I'd make the deal. Big Ben has been passing like crazy, and I don't se the trend changing much.
AJ Mass (12:03 PM)
And that's my time. Thanks to all for your Q's. Sorry we couldn't get to them all. Find me on Twitter and I'll see you the next time on Villa Alegre!
