Dan Rafael (12:01 PM)
Greetings Fight Freaks! We've got plenty going on. New notebook is up as well as several blogs this week. Good Showtime card tomorrow night with Agbeko-Perez and big fights on the way with Dawson-Johnson II next week and then the big one, Cotto-Pacquiao. Let's get right to it and let's go Yankees!
Chris (PA)
DTM, any news on Taylor's future in the super 6? Also, what are the chances Dawson (assuming he beats Johnson) or Pavlik (assuming his hand heals in the next 6 weeks) replace Taylor? Green is good but Pavlik or Dawson would be much better options.
Dan Rafael (12:03 PM)
Taylor has not made any decisions yet, at least not publicly. No chance Pavlik enters. Dawson, if he wins, says he is interested but HBO will have a lot of say on that since they have an option on his next fight after Johnson. I would be SHOCKED if HBO let Dawson go to Showtime to enter the tournament, which has gotten rave reviews and a ton of publicity.
Lubbock Tx [via mobile]
PAC seems to think that the fight between him and mayweather will never happen. What do you think?
Dan Rafael (12:04 PM)
I think that if Manny wins on Nov. 14 the fight is inevitible because it is by far -- BY FAR -- the richest fight you can make in boxing today and fighters and promoters follow the money. Nothing comes close to it in terms of pure dollars.
James (Lexington, KY)
Dan, I know you have an extra ticket to the Pacquiao-Cotto fight.Let me in.
Dan Rafael (12:04 PM)
No, I don't. I have no tickets.
Freddie Faull (London, UK)
Pacman V Mayweather should get made if manny wins, not just for a great fight for the P4P title, but to see the rematch of Roach vs Mayweather SR. in the 24/7 series, those two looked like they were one insult away from a fist fight. Id have my money on Mayweather SR. in that fight.
Dan Rafael (12:05 PM)
If that fight happens, the Roach-Senior storyline will certainly be part of the promotion.
Pat (Phoenix)
Dan, I need help. Why does it still bother me so much that Joe Calzaghe retired before i got to see him lose? I don't know why, but it eats me up! Am I out of line, or do you feel it to?
Dan Rafael (12:06 PM)
You're pathetic.
Freddie Faull (London, UK)
Hey Dan, how do you get to watch fights that arent aired on american TV? Boxing is hard to watch here in the UK with the demise of Setanta and ITV pulling out of boxing, really hope a channel other than sky takes a serious interest in boxing soon.
Dan Rafael (12:06 PM)
I get DVDs from Europe (and around the world) regularly. I also watch a lot of fights on the Internet.
Kevin (Denver)
Any plans for Devon Alexander to defend his title in 2009?
Dan Rafael (12:07 PM)
Nothing at the momement and his promoter, Don King, should be ashamed of himself.
Rags (NYC)
I've heard the name Derric Rossy tossed around as a potential opponent for Arreola in December. Any truth to this?
Dan Rafael (12:08 PM)
Arreola's promoter, Dan Goossen, has been mentioning that name to some people, but he has not been brought up to HBO or approved by HBO at this point. If that is indeed the fight that is made, shame on HBO. That is not a worthy fight whatsoever for World Championship Boxing.
angel (los angeles)
whats the lates on victor ortiz, i know he has a schedual fight dec 12. you dont know with who. and how is he doing after his hand injery.
Dan Rafael (12:09 PM)
Victor is going to face Antonio Diaz. Victor had surgery on his wrist after his loss and from what he says, he is doing just fine. Last I saw Victor was last month in Las Vegas at the Mayweather-Marquez fight and he was proud to show off his scar to me. He said his wrist was just fine and he was getting back in the gym.
kevin washington (Bossier)
Should Jermaine Talyor get a new trainer or just call it quits??
Dan Rafael (12:10 PM)
Jermain Taylor's problems in the ring have nothing to do with his trainer. But I do think it's time maybe he retire for the good of his longerm health. He's had a great career and made a ton of money.
Matt (Washington, DC)
I loved the Adamek-Haye idea you threw out there. Is there a realistic prospect of that for sometime in 2010? THAT winner would be a fantastic challenger to a Klitschko.
Dan Rafael (12:10 PM)
Have no idea if it's realistic at this point but it would be one hell of an exciting fight.
pribs (bethlehem, pa)
Since I'm on the hook for a room in AC on 12/5, please tell me Diaz-Malignaggi II is gaining some steam.
Dan Rafael (12:11 PM)
At this point, there's now a good chance Williams-TBA stays in AC and is on Dec. 5.
Mike (NYC)
Why is the Super 6 tournament drawing "rave reviews" when the 2 fights thus far have been so boring?
Dan Rafael (12:12 PM)
There isn't one person I have encountered who follows boxing who does not like the tournament. Will every fight be great? Of course not. It's the idea and notion of the overall tournament that is spectacular. Six top guys, 12 fights, big stakes and guys who lose aren't thrown away. And I don't think at all that Abraham-Taylor was "boring" as you say. It was a pretty solid fight with a spectacular ending.
Tom (Hollywood, California)
Dan,any word on a US TV Outlet for the Klitschko/Johnson fight? I saw where the fight is already a sell out.
Dan Rafael (12:13 PM)
Nothing yet but I was in touch with Klitschko's manager, Bernd Boente, just yesterday and he says they are still working on a US TV outlet. I am confident that it will air in the US just not sure who will carry it.
R! (Yay Area)
Great Halloween card, what are the chances the DeMarco-Alfaro winner fights Valero? I think Perez pulls off the upset tomorrow.
Dan Rafael (12:14 PM)
It's an excellent card tomorrow. DeMarco has a way of making fights tough on himself, but I think he'll get it done against Alfaro, but both guys have a good shot. The winner will be Valero's mandatory so I would think the fight would eventually happen unless Valero ends up giving up the title or is stripped because of his inability to get into or fight in the US (other than Texas).
Christopher (Chicago)
I thought Arreola was going to face Tua
Dan Rafael (12:15 PM)
Tua was a name mentioned but he won't be Arreola's opponent for the December fight. Maybe in the future.
John (PA)
Who is working the HBO card next week Larry or Max?
Dan Rafael (12:15 PM)
Max.
Jonathan (Northern VA)
Did you see the letters between Larry Merchant and the New York Times? First, Larry is right on the money as per usual. Second, did you see his shout out to your rankings? D$ gets all the love from Merchant!
Dan Rafael (12:18 PM)
I did see it. I knew ahead of time what they had written back and forth because Larry and I talked about it recently. I think he was also dead on in his review of the Times' behavior. The Times sports section has always stunk overall anyway. Give me the News and the Post for sports any day. Let the Times write about sailing and cricket for all I care. Do most people even read the newspaper anymore -- and that hurts to say as a guy who spent 12 years writing for newspapers and loving newspapers from the time I was a kid. I still read two papers a day (Washington Post and USA TODAY) and others online but the industry is a mess right now. The Times not covering boxing is not a surprise. Bunch of elitist snobs running that joint.
chrisdiggidy (oklahoma city, ok)
Please slap Mike in NYC in the face with a stack of paper with the matchups for the Super 6 on it
John (PA)
Is HBO picking up Klitschko vs Johnson?
Dan Rafael (12:19 PM)
No decision as of yet.
manny (riverside,cali)
mayweather was supposed to come in at 143 for the marquez fight and ended up at 146. what will happen if cotto comes in at 146 instead of 145? will he re-weigh?
Dan Rafael (12:20 PM)
Cotto is a professional. If he happens to miss the weight I believe he would take the time allowed and go lose the pound and come back and honor his contract.
Ivan (San Juan, Puerto Rico)
Hey, Dan! Love your blog and chats. Hopefully since my countryman is one of the combatants, my question will be posted. Would you rank Cotto as the top P4P fighter in the world if he beats Pacquiao. if not, who would it be?
Dan Rafael (12:21 PM)
Probably not but I would never say never until I see the fight.
Greg (Los Angeles)
Who do you see as the favorite to replace Jermain Taylor in the Super 6?
Dan Rafael (12:22 PM)
Nothing has changed. Probably Allan Green.
Rob C (Philadelphia, PA)
Saw the Muhammad Vs Larry documentary. It was extremely fascinating and well done. I loved getting a behind the scenes look at the camps and politics of the sport.
Dan Rafael (12:23 PM)
I have heard and read that it was great. Have to admit I have not seen it yet other than a few minutes. I've been a bit busy, but it's on my DVR and I plan to watch it at some point in the next few days.
Choco (New Jersey)
Do you think HBO's announcers will be told not to discuss the super 6 during Bute v. Andrade?
Dan Rafael (12:24 PM)
I'd be surprised if it was not at least mentioned. How can you possible discuss the super middleweight division without having that come up? Knowing the HBO announcers, I am sure it will come up. Will they dwell on it and talk about Showtime? I doubt it. But I'd be willing to bet it is at least mentioned in context.
Steve (Hartford )
Very good to hear Versus has picked up the Jones vs Green fight.
Dan Rafael (12:24 PM)
Agreed. It makes sense given that Versus is doing the Hopkins fight the same night.
ben (the district)
If Kessler-Ward is as bad as the other two fights, will showtime consider cancelling the tourney?
Dan Rafael (12:25 PM)
If your next question sucks as much as that one should I consider banning you?
Thom (Holton, In)
Whats next for the Love Child
Dan Rafael (12:26 PM)
Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh, the Love Child. Well, he just won his comeback fight a couple of weeks ago. So nothing is set for his next fight at this point. I would imagine we'll see him back in action early next year.
Huji (NYC)
Any word on Tavoris Cloud? I haven't heard anything on him since his nice win over Clinton Woods
Dan Rafael (12:27 PM)
Nothing. Which, knowing his team, comes as no surprise.
Ernie (Columbus, Ohio)
Dan as a die hard Kelly Pavlik fan from Ohio his injuries have seemed to kill the momentum that he had a few years back. Do you think he will ever get that momentum back?
Dan Rafael (12:27 PM)
All it will take is one big win.
Gary Burton (Beaverton, OR)
Dan, the negotiations for Mosley vs. Berto are killing me. When are they going to settle matters and get the contracts signed?
Dan Rafael (12:28 PM)
As soon as HBO and Team Berto agree on the money. They're still a bit apart and dealing with some other issues, such as language for comeback fights and such.
Gary Burton (Beaverton, OR)
Dan, whose decision was it for ESPN users to have to pay to get your "Insider" information on your complete pound-for-pound list?
Dan Rafael (12:30 PM)
Someone way above my pay grade. I have no idea, but I do know this -- ESPN is a business. Why do you have to pay for food and your cable and your cell phone? Do you expect them for free also?
Earn (Ca)
Will Margarito automatically be reinstated next year or is there a chance he can be denied?
Dan Rafael (12:30 PM)
He won't be automatically reinstated. He'll have to appear again before the California commission and certainly could be denied a request for a license.
sammy [via mobile]
I Think Mayweather should fight Andre Berto!
Dan Rafael (12:32 PM)
You are the only one.
Andre via RI [via mobile]
Why aren't members of the boxing media condemning Floyd Mayweather Jr. for his apparent refusal to take on the best? (Cotto, Pacquiao, Mosley). It seems everyone is kissing Floyd's ass... Frankly, if he's not going to fight the best, he useless and should retire.
Dan Rafael (12:33 PM)
Apparently, you don't do much reading.
Michael Chicago illinois [via mobile]
Hey dan how you doing. I believe Pacquiao calling out mayweather just made that fight even more of a possibility. I personally believe that if pacman doesn't sell at least over a million mayweather will want the lion share of the purse. I think they should do what bernard and roy are gonna do for their fight that's the only way negotiations are gonna work for these two superstars.
AARON (CAMP PENDLETON)
does margarito really have a chance to get big fights again?? what a disgrace. It would be awsome to see cintron knock hiss A$$ out in a rematch in the middleweight. I also cant wait to see canelo come to the US and fight.
Dan Rafael (12:35 PM)
If Margarito gets his license back I would think eventually he'll get a big fight even though many are disgusted by him (not to mention he got crushed in his last fight). As for Saul Alvarez, he's been fighting in Mexico and having success and drawing crowds, but I would think eventually he'll wind up here. He's still only 19.
Dominic (San Francisco)
Dan! I know there's only a slight chance you know the answer to this question, but do you know what gym Kessler will train at in Sacramento? I can't find it on the internet and I really want to go see him train!
Dan Rafael (12:35 PM)
I do not know which gym.
javier Gorbea (Puerto Rico )
besides cotto vs pacquiao wthat fights will you be attending in the next couples of weeks.
Dan Rafael (12:36 PM)
I'll be at next week's Dawson-Johnson fight and plan to go to Bernard Hopkins' fight and the Williams fight in AC.
Chris (Vancouver BC)
Mariano Rivera is the greatest thing since sliced bread.
Dan Rafael (12:37 PM)
This we know. Actually, he's better than sliced bread.
Gordon (Ocala, FL)
I am psyched for the return of FNF on ESPN2!!
Dan Rafael (12:38 PM)
I am also but we still have a few months to wait.
Matt (Spokane)
Dan-- your P4P rankings are a necessity, whereas food is more of a luxury.
Kris (North Jersey)
It seems that you prefer relatively action-less sports like baseball and boxing. Why not join the rest of us in the 21st century and embrace football and MMA instead?
Dan Rafael (12:39 PM)
Why not play in traffic this afternoon?
josue (orlando)
the middleweight division is not looking good right now.You think Jacobs can be the future of that division?
Dan Rafael (12:40 PM)
Middleweight is pretty poor right now. Jacobs certainly has a chance to move up in that division quickly.
josue (orlando fl)
who you got tomorrow agbeko or perez?
Dan Rafael (12:41 PM)
I like Agbeko in a tough fight. I'm really looking forward to it. Perez is no joke. I have a DVD of his knockout of Mabuza in South Africa and he did a great job in a tough fight.
psycho (LaLaLand)
on scale 1-10 how interested would you be in a donaire-darchinyan rematch?
Dan Rafael (12:43 PM)
At this moment, I'm really not all that interested. Why should I be? Donaire scored a definitive knockout and Darchinyan's stock was further reduced with his loss to Agbeko. I am not against the rematch or anything. If they make it, great. But I don't think it is something that is MUST SEE. It's fine, but if either fighter does something else, so be it.
Brandon (Tucson)
You wrote that Povetkin is a mandatory for one of the Klitschko's, yet he want to take a tune up fight and is considering fight Sam Peter. Doesn't that seem like a bit too much of a risk? Peter is limited, but he could knock anyone out there silly if he is able to land.
Dan Rafael (12:44 PM)
Povetkin's next bout will be for an interim title. His "tune-up" was canceled.
Vic (chicago, ill) [via mobile]
Hey danny im a big tua fan how many fights before a title shot thanx brother
Dan Rafael (12:45 PM)
Who knows. Tua has fought for a title once against Lennox. He deserved a title fight way before he even got that one. He has done absolutely nothing that matters since the Lewis fight. But he could get a shot eventually. He just needs to stay active.
Alberto (Arizona)
Hey! seņor gordito, Pavlik-Williams never going to happen, but how about pelenchin Caballero vs Juan Manuel Lopez??? I wanna see this guy destroy Juan Manuel Lopez.
Dan Rafael (12:45 PM)
You'll be waiting a long time because Caballero-Lopez is not in the cards right now. Lopez is going up to featherweight and has fights in his future with Luevano and Gamboa.
Anthony M (Killeen TX)
What are you expecting in the Dawson vs Johnson fight? The first fight was great , but do you think Johnson has enough steam left to perform as well as in the first fight? I just have a bad feeling the emotions and expectations from the first fight will really throw him off.
Dan Rafael (12:47 PM)
Johnson is a true pro. Nothing throws this guy off. I expect another very good fight. Chad can make it easier on himself if he uses his legs more than he did the first time. If that happens, however, it probably means it's a less exciting fight.
E (Omaha)
D$$ - After Agbeko wins Saturday night, will Floyd call him out as his next fight??
Dan Rafael (12:48 PM)
You never know. I think Ivan Calderon is ahead of Agbeko in line though.
Jeff (Redondo Beach, CA)
Manny already talking about Mayweather? Just another sign that the Cotto fight has upset written all over it.
Dan Rafael (12:48 PM)
Manny, I am sure, was asked specifically about Mayweather. I'm sure he didn't just bring it up to the reporters.
Russ (Louisville)
For those of us with Direct Tv , We will not be seeing boxing on Verses. Settle the damn dispute!!!!!
Dan Rafael (12:49 PM)
Too bad for you I guess.
Mark (NYC)
Shouldn't Floyd Mayweather show up as a guest star on an episode of Curb Your Enthusiasm? I'm imagining some conversation between Larry, Leon, and Floyd. It's somewhere between Krazy Eyez-Killah and perfection.
Dan Rafael (12:50 PM)
That is hilarious.
Adam (NYC)
Dan my buddy and I planned our joint birthday for Williams - Pavlik and thought we'd have to scrap the plans. Can you clarify some more on the Dec 5 date? If I hear you right the likely scenario is Williams v. TBA, does that mean the Clottey undercard too on Dec 5? Would it include the Arreolla undercard? Why is Ceasars now willing to keep Williams when they didn't think he'd draw there without Pavlik?
Dan Rafael (12:51 PM)
First off, I think Williams will wind up facing Sergio Martinez in a nontitle bout (over 154). Clottey-Quintana is off the card. Arreola is supposed to now open the HBO telecast. AC may wind up keeping the fight but basically making it a four-wall deal -- meaning not putting up any money (or very, very little) and letting Goossen take all the risk.
Gutterdandy (Brooklyn)
Dan, any news on Abraham-Dirrell possibly taking place at MSG in January?
Dan Rafael (12:53 PM)
Abraham-Dirrell will take place in the US, but very unlikely to be in NYC in Jan. Top Rank is working with MSG on a deal for the Theatr to host the Jan. 23 HBO card with Lopez and Gamboa. If Showtime puts Abraham-Dirrell on the same date, it's a bad move. I know Gary Shaw, Dirrell's promoter, has no site yet for the fight since I spoke to him just this morning on the topic.
guano man (puerto rico)
dan did you hear about the confrontation between daniel santos and kermit cintro two days before the cintron fight in Puerto rico is they eventually figth do you believe a network wii pick it up
Dan Rafael (12:54 PM)
I did hear about it and I am sure their little confrontation was more interesting than if they ever fought considering how inwatchable Santos is. If I'm HBO or Showtime, no way do I buy that.
Luis (PR)
Would it really be an upset in Cotto won? I think this fight is more of a toss up than anything else.
Dan Rafael (12:54 PM)
I will not consider it a big upset at all if Cotto wins.
JC (New York )
Funny how everybody is hatin' on Floyd still about the Marquez weight debacle, but if this was back in he day with "orginal 8" divisions - would the weight issue be a problem? No, they would have fought at 147!
Dan Rafael (12:56 PM)
You miss the point. The point is Mayweather signed a contract saying he'd make a certain weight. He didn't make it or even try after missing it. That is the point.
Jess (Miami)
Dan, I will be attending Pac v Cotto. When do you expect the information on the weigh in will be announced?
Dan Rafael (12:57 PM)
The weigh in will be Friday afternoon in the arena, probably about 3 pm Las Vegas time. Doors to the arena probably will open a few hours before. It is free to the public.
Ray (Dearborn,MI)
The Love Child, Giants Rock, Yankees Rock, KISS Rocks....how'd I do?
Dan Rafael (12:58 PM)
Not bad, but you forgot about Duke hoops and my cats.
Sarah (Seattle)
After watching this sport for so long, do you still get excited for fights like Cotto-Pac or is it just another fight for you?
Dan Rafael (12:59 PM)
I always get excited for big fights. When that no longer happens is when I'll find something else to do for a living.
Ron (Bethel, Ct)
Dan the man!!! Junma and Gamboa back at the Wamu Theater in MSG!!! Please tell me its definite??? Went to their last fight card and it was awesome!! then gamboa vs. mtagwa is such a great idea by arum. See how gamboa stacks up against him. Very excited if this all comes together1!!
Dan Rafael (1:00 PM)
I wouldn't say it is definite, but it is likely.
Matt (NYC)
Dan, a little clarity on Pacquiao "calling out" Mayweather please. I get that he said Mayweather doesn't want to make the fight, but did Pacquiao actually say its a fight he wants to make?
Dan Rafael (1:00 PM)
Not that I read.
Jose A. (Puerto Rico)
Watched 24/7 last Saturday, I thought the Cotto segments would be boring, I mean I'm a huge fan and everything but the guy is no Trinidad or Gomez in terms of charisma you know but he really impressed me! What did you think? I really liked the part when he said he was a great dad but a bad husband...
Dan Rafael (1:01 PM)
I sort of agree. The Pacquiao stuff was all pretty interesting, especially with all the stuff going on in the Philippines. But the Cotto segments were boring.
Ron (Bethel,Ct)
Dan, can you help me understand something? The nov 7 Haye Valuev fight that is being distributed via ppv. Are we just seeing that fight and the ruiz fight or are there gonna to be 4 ppv fights?
Dan Rafael (1:04 PM)
We'll see Valuev-Haye, Ruiz and probably some other bouts from the card. I have the entire card listed in the ESPN.com schedule I keep, but it not official which bouts are part of the PPV yet.
Charles (Philly)
Great blogs this week, Dan. Speaking of which, did the WBO grant Artie Pellullo's ridiculous request to certify Angulo-Yorgey for a SECOND interim title?
Dan Rafael (1:05 PM)
I do not know if the WBO has made a decision yet. I need to check that out.
Matt H (PHX, AZ)
DAN, Wrestlemania was just announced to be at Glendale, AZ at the stadium...CLOSE TO WHERE I LIVE!! I'm stoked!!! Never been to one!
Dan Rafael (1:06 PM)
Sweet. I covered a fight once in Glendale (Tszyu-Mitchell II). I have also once been to a WrestleMania (No. 1 in NYC). But I have never been to a WrestleMania in Glendale!
Mike (Boston, Ma)
DTM, Bill Simmons is downstairs in my building signing books. Any message you want me to relay to him about you being the chat king?
Dan Rafael (1:07 PM)
Tell him he can't carry my jock when it comes to chats. :)
Mark (NYC)
Thanks for suggesting a Youtube viewing of the Moore-Rhodes scrap. I still think the 8th Round of Marquez-Diaz is the round of the year (sure plenty will disagree with me on that), but the 7th round of Moore-Rhodes gives any round of 2009 a run for the money on pure entertainment.
Dan Rafael (1:09 PM)
That was a sensational fight in England last week. All Freaks are encouraged to go to YouTube and check it out.
Chris (Dayton, OH)
Dan,Do you see the announcement of Dave Moretti, Adalaide Byrd and Duane Ford, all of Las Vegas as judges for Cotto/Pacquiao as a disadvantage for either fighter, particulurly Cotto? I am very pleased to see Kenny Bayless as Ref - a definite plus!
Dan Rafael (1:10 PM)
Bayless, to me, is the best referee in the sport right now. He deserves the assignment. The judging panel is made up of experienced, veteran judges and I don't think either fighter can complain at all.
Brad (New York)
I hear that Miranda is going to be on the Ward Kessler undercard. Is their any truth to that and if so do you know who Miranda will fight?
Dan Rafael (1:11 PM)
He is scheduled on that undercard but his opponent is TBA. The bout is not scheduled to be on Showtime at this point, however. I guess that could change.
Hal (KC)
Where's Winky? Why don't him and Miranda get together?
Dan Rafael (1:12 PM)
Winky actually has a fight scheduled in December in Puerto Rico against Grady Brewer.
andrew from passaic nj [via mobile]
Did you get to see kiss at the garden a month ago?
Dan Rafael (1:13 PM)
No, but I saw them a few nights later in Washington and they were sensational. I am listening to the CD of the concert right now.
Ron (Bethel,Ct)
Dan, so I got a little confused and was hoping you can help. I thought Michael Buffer was part of HBO's crew but I saw him do the Abraham Taylor fight for showtime. Does he just work for whatever station hires him?
Dan Rafael (1:15 PM)
Buffer works for the promoter of the show, although the network I believe must approve a ring announcer. In any case, Michael regularly does Sauerland Event shows and since Showtime had another fight from the UK the same night with Jimmy Lennon, he couldn't also be in Germany.
Pete (Philly)
Dan, me and my buddies were arguing over the best boxing ring entrances in the last 25 years were. I went with Prince Naseem's entrance vs. Kevin Kelley. What do you think?
Dan Rafael (1:16 PM)
That was up there, but Hamed had a lot of great ones, like when he flew on the "magic" carpet.
Chris (Vancouver BC)
I went out to the bar the other night for the first time in years. Anyway, some drunk pushed me in the bathroom and I one punched him. Just wondering what you think my odds are that Suliman would sanction that for an interm diamond belt.
Dan Rafael (1:17 PM)
I think you've got an oustanding chance as long as it was a catch weight fight. If you and the drunk were the same size, I don't think so, but if you were a lot different in weight, I think you can make it happen. Good luck Freak.
Bime (Taunton Ma)
D-Money$$-- how close are they to making Yuriorkis Gamboa vs Rogers Mtagwa. I'd love to see that fight especially to compare Gamboa performance to Juanma. Even thou a common opponent dont mean nothing, Duran was a common opponent for Hagler and Hearns
Dan Rafael (1:18 PM)
Gamboa-Mtagwa is going to happen. Both sides want it and work well together. It's going to happen I believe.
Chief M. (EYA, Clw, Fl.)
Mr. Rafael,You often mention Kiss in these chats. What other groups or music do you listen that would surprise regular readers of this chat? Thank You.
Dan Rafael (1:18 PM)
I have a lot of musical tastes. People might be surprised to know that I am also a Madonna fan (seen her three times live).
Dan Rafael (1:19 PM)
We have news from the Bat Email.
Dan Rafael (1:20 PM)
After that recent question about Miranda being on the Kessler-Ward card, I emailed Showtime's Ken Hershman to get a clarification on whether Showtime was showing any other bouts on Nov. 21 besides Kessler-Ward. He answered and said Showtime will televise just the main event that night. So there ya go.
Pete (Salt Lake City)
Has Sergio Martinez ever fought in an HBO WCB main event? Seems like a big fight for him yet he's unwilling to put his belt on the line? Why is that? is he scared? He says he's not getting enough money, but won't it be one of his biggest pay days?
Dan Rafael (1:21 PM)
Strictly money. If they want to pay him, he'll defend his title. But believe me -- I am sure Williams doesn't love the idea of getting all the way down to 154 when he thought all along he'd fight Pavlik at 160.
C.M. (Canada)
I can't tell which heavyweight retread in your notebook made me want to vomit more, Rahman or Maskaev...
Dan Rafael (1:22 PM)
Don't forget Michael Grant please!
johnnyutah (NJ)
how long before Rocky Juarez pops up as someone's mandatory?
Dan Rafael (1:22 PM)
Knowing the sanctioning mobs, it should be any day now.
State Penitentiary (Texas)
Still here...
Dan Rafael (1:22 PM)
Thank you for the Kirkland update.
John Ruiz (MA)
I will be the next WBA champion true or false?
Dan Rafael (1:23 PM)
Given that the WBA names new champions like I change my socks, there will probably be dozens before you.
Erik (Atlanta, GA)
Hey D$$$$ can you help me out, I was talking to a guy at work who said Bob Foster would have KO'd Roy Jones in his prime. I've only seen youtube clips of Foster and he looks as though he wouldn't come close to hitting Jones. Am I way off base on this one?
Dan Rafael (1:25 PM)
Bob Foster was a nasty mother of a puncher and a rough, tough guy. He could never handle heavyweight but at light heavyweight he was absolutely awesome. I have some DVDs of some of his fights when he was at his best and that dude was one of the best ever at 175. He definitely had a good chance to put Jones to sleep, although Roy was obviously a lot faster. On a side note, I had a chance to meet Foster and talk with him at length about his career a few years and he couldn't have been a cooler guy.
Chief M. (EYA, Clw, Fl.)
Mr. Rafael,In a best case scenario when do you think Kelly Pavlik returns to the ring? And who do you think will be his most likely opponet? Thank You.
Dan Rafael (1:28 PM)
A very good question. Obviously, Kelly won't fight the rest of 2009. I would hope that his hand gets better and he could fight sometime in the first few months of next year, but who knows? At some point, he'll have mandatory obligations to deal with, so his next bout could be a mandatory, unless he gives up titles and maybe moves up to 168. The landscape of marketable opponents at 160 woeful so who knows who he will fight? I do know this -- there is no big money fight at 160 other than Williams.
Raul Jr. (Everett, WA)
Hey Dan, by matching up Juanma with Steven Luevano, dont you think that Bob Arum is putting the possible Juanma-Gamboa fight in jeopardy? I think Luevano would come out the winner in that fight as he looks to be the better boxer
Dan Rafael (1:29 PM)
Of course, Lopez-Gamboa would be in jeopardy. But that's the business. It's about risk a lot of times. If Luevano wins, they can make Luevano and Gamboa. That's also a good fight.
jeff (new haven)
you sometimes tend to be rude, with your comments. you called me an idiot last week, i dint appreciate it.Loosen up
Dan Rafael (1:30 PM)
I apologize. How about this instead: You're an idiot this week.
Will (GR, Michigan)
What do you think about Hatton wanting another shot at Mayweather?
Dan Rafael (1:31 PM)
I think he's delusional. And maybe a little drunk on ale.
Julio (Seoul)
I believe Chad Dawson is one of the best fighters out there. I have seen all of his fights, and turly believe he is the next p4p king out there. Is there something wrong with me?
Dan Rafael (1:31 PM)
Not at all. Chad has that level of talent.
Dominic (San Francisco)
Just watched the 7th round of Moore v. Rhodes! Great stuff! Who needs the New York Times to cover boxing when there's YouTube!
Dan Rafael (1:31 PM)
Exactly.
Vito (New York)
What do you think of Roberto Cammarelle's prospects as a pro heavyweight. He looked pretty good at the world amateurs as well as the last Olympics.
Dan Rafael (1:33 PM)
I have seen several of his amateur fights from the Olympics and Worlds. In fact, I just caught thte Worlds on NBC Universal Sports last week. He's a good amateur but I have read for the past few years that he has no intention of turning pro. Just not interested. I guess he could change his mind, but who knows?
Josh (Richmond, VA)
It doesn't help your cause Jeff when you post things such as "i dint appreciate it."
Dan Rafael (1:35 PM)
Bingo.
G$ (Oakland)
Any news on Humberto Soto? Is he doing another Latin Fury PPV or will we see him say against Robert Guerrero?
Dan Rafael (1:36 PM)
He'll be on the next Latin Fury PPV in Mexico.
Joe (NY)
How much longer is Jim Lampley under contract to HBO?
Dan Rafael (1:36 PM)
You're nosey.
Jess (Miami)
Dan, any idea if the card at the Mnadalay Bay on the 13th is on and when tickets will go on sale?
Dan Rafael (1:38 PM)
Not sure about tickets but the card is on. It will be inside the House of Blues at Mandalay Bay and be televised on Azteca.
Don (Indy)
Do you think Don Kings health is a factor in his low level of activity recently
Dan Rafael (1:40 PM)
Not at all. DK has as much energy as he has ever had. True story: Last night, I'm watching the World Series. Phone rings in the third inning and it's DK. He goes on and on at full blast for literally 20 minutes about his card Saturday night, really excited that it will be seen in 175 countries, about his new business relationship with Treasure Island owner Phil Ruffin, etc... Trust me, DK has tons of energy for a guy in late 70s. Hell, for a guy who was 40. He's amazing.
Joe (San Jose)
Dan what do you think of Roach's confident prediction of KO9 by Pacquiao?
Dan Rafael (1:41 PM)
Actually, he's said KO1.
Jeff (Redondo Beach, CA)
He sure knows how to sell. DK knew he had to give you all the info he could before your chat today!
Dan Rafael (1:42 PM)
Don can sell an eskimo snow in the winter. And probably has.
Charles (Philly)
Were you able to get in a word edgewise about Devon Alexander during DK's twenty-minute rant? If so, did he even recognize the name?
Dan Rafael (1:43 PM)
I got in about 10 words.
Gerardo (AZ)
Dan's ten words: "King, I am watching the Yankees game. Leave me alone.
Dan Rafael (1:46 PM)
LOL! I was polite.
Dave (Washington DC)
Will it be 50-50 fans split during Pacquiao-Cotto fight?
Dan Rafael (1:47 PM)
I would imagine Pacquiao will have more of the crowd behind him. But I am sure there will be plenty of Cotto support also.
Johann (Bristol, CT)
Hey Dan- What are you thoughts on Freddie Roach saying that Hatton just wasn't a good champion? I thought it was pretty funny.
Dan Rafael (1:47 PM)
Fredeie was being honest. He never thought much of Hatton.
Jonathan (Northern VA)
Dan, honestly, were you happy to talk to Don or did you just want to watch the game?
Dan Rafael (1:48 PM)
I enjoy talking to Don, always have. Although his timing wasn't so great last night.
Rob C (Philadelphia, PA, USA)
Where does Mosley go if he beats Berto?
Dan Rafael (1:50 PM)
First they have to get Mosley-Berto signed. Then if Shane wins I am sure he'll be looking for Mayweather-Pacquiao-Mayweather. One of them. Nothing different than before. Whether he can get one of them remains to be seen.
Adrian (Chicago)
Am I crazy for predicting Dirrell over Abraham?
Dan Rafael (1:51 PM)
No. It's possible. Dirrell is bigger, faster and more skilled. But Abraham is obviously the favorite because he has monster power, a great chin and very solid defense.
Little Rob Cline (Southern, NJ, USA)
Does Golden Boy make any money off Pacquiao when he fights? He is listed as one of there fighters on there website.
Dan Rafael (1:52 PM)
Yes. Golden Boy has something like a 5% interest in his promotional contract.
Damjan (Charlotte, NC)
DTM, I have 79 boxing dvds and 11 porn dvds, freak status?
Dan Rafael (1:53 PM)
Ummmm, no.
Jeff (Redondo Beach, CA)
I am thinking about dressing up as Taylor for Halloween and going to sleep at 9:30.
Dan Rafael (1:55 PM)
Ouch.
Jesse (Texas)
Dan-o-lantern, i have been seeing more and more articles regarding oscar not handling retirement too well which i can understand. Do you think Oscar's ego gets the best of him and he rematches Floyd or Pac in the future?
Dan Rafael (1:56 PM)
Love the holiday themed nickname! I haven't seen anything about that topic but I have said all along I wouldn't be surprised to see Oscar fight again. That said, I have a hard time seeing either of thos rematches being made.
Ress (TX)
I keep reading that Paquiao is 6 division champ. I cant find anywhere on the net where it list his title winsCan you please tell me who and what weight divisions these fights are?
Dan Rafael (1:58 PM)
I have written it. He was WBC/lineal 112, IBF 122, Ring/lineal 126, Ring/lineal 130, WBC 135, Ring/lineal 140 and now he's going for WBO 147.
Homer (Oxford, OH)
Dan, Pacquiao never won the 112 Ring title, so how have people claimed he has won four lineal titles???
Dan Rafael (2:00 PM)
There was no Ring title when he was flyweight champ, but he was lineal champion. The lineage goes directly back to Miguel Canto. The lineal title has exisited since Day 1 in boxing. The Ring title, which is only a few years old in its current state, recognizes the lineal champions.
Homer (Oxford, OH)
Didn't he also win some alphabets at 130?
Dan Rafael (2:01 PM)
Yes, Manny was also WBC at 130.
G$ (Oakland)
WBC 135 over David Diaz and WBO vs Cotto for 147 are bogus! Paper champs, they SHOULD NOT COUNT!
Dan Rafael (2:02 PM)
They do count as matter of fact. He was only IBF at 122 as well.
Mark (Windsor, CT)
How did HBO get the punch stats for Tarver-Dawson 1 and will they have them for Dawson-Johnson 1 since both of those fights were on Showtime?
Dan Rafael (2:03 PM)
The CompuBox folks probably did the stats by watching the tape of the fight after the fact. I would assume they did the same thing in preparation for the rematch next week.
matt jones (NC)
diaconu vs pascal tv coverage?
Dan Rafael (2:04 PM)
I am told the Canadian promoters are talking to ESPN Classic about possible US coverage.
G$ (Oakland)
You rip the ABCs all the time for vacant and interim match ups left and right, yet count them for a star fighter in Manny. BS double standard!
Dan Rafael (2:04 PM)
It's not at all. I am stating the facts, not making a judgment.
Dan Rafael (2:05 PM)
Andf, by the way, does anyone doubt that had Manny fought in those divisions he would have won a title at 115 and 118 as well?
Ryan (Philly)
I had to cancel Showtime this week. Comcast upped the price to $23.95 per month on me. Can I come to your house to watch?
Dan Rafael (2:05 PM)
No.
Homer (Oxford, OH)
Mayweather said only four of Pacquiao's 6 are real. I guess the WBC was the "real" championship, until he beat Judah for the IBF, then they became legit. And I guess the Ring didn't matter (or exist in his mind) till he beat Balodomir...
Dan Rafael (2:07 PM)
Mayweather needs to get his facts straight. Mayweather was considered the legit champ at 130, 135 and 147. That means two of his weight class titles are also not "real" I guess. He was a paper titlist at 140 as well as at 154.
Horn (Vegas)
I know HBO has exclusive rights to Compubox Stats , but doesn't ESPN FNF have some type of punch tracker? Can't Showtime adopt some type of alternative tracker?
Dan Rafael (2:09 PM)
CompuBox runs ESPN's punch track stuff. HBO's exclusivity pertains to premium cable.
Floyd Mayweather (Las Vegas, NV)
I'm not impressed. Pacquiao didn't win the WBC belt at 105, 108, 115, 118, 122, 126, 140, or 147. He doesn't deserve to fight me.
Manny (NJ)
It's amazing how much Allan Green has gotten out of the Codrington knockout, he hasn't done anything in years.
Dan Rafael (2:10 PM)
Other than talk a whole lot.
Rob (Halifax, Canada)
What are we gonna complain about after Mayweather and Pacquaio fight?
Dan Rafael (2:12 PM)
You'll all find something. I have no doubt about that at all.
Shane Mosley (Los Angeles)
It's funny Berto talking some much smack lately. He has fought one real fighter for his entire career and most people think he lost.
Jamie (Kearny)
So Jones vs. Green won't be available on US PPV?
Dan Rafael (2:13 PM)
Can you read? It will be on Versus.
Homer (Oxford, OH)
I think Jamie was looking forward for giving up $25-$55 bucks
Dan Rafael (2:16 PM)
He apparently doesn't like money.
By Reason of Insanity (Romper Room)
On average how many boxing matches do you watch in a given week? Whether they are current fights or classics from your collection?
Dan Rafael (2:18 PM)
A lot. Depends on the week, but many.
David (Winston-Salem, NC)
Dano! I am extremely excited about the Bradley-Peterson matchup. How do you see that one playing out?
Dan Rafael (2:19 PM)
Very even fight. Should be very competitive, but don't go in expecting an all-action fight. This one will be mostly boxing, not slugging. Flip a coin for the winner.
Paul B (NY, NY)
Assuming you are not attending, % of a RAD chate this sat?
Dan Rafael (2:20 PM)
Zero percent as I will be watching the Showtime fights and the World Series.
Damjan (Charlotte, NC)
where are the celebrity guests... you had the bobfather a few months back and then nothing...
Dan Rafael (2:22 PM)
Those have happened when I am AT a fight, not when I am in my office. I could have my cats join the chat today but that's about the best I can do right now.
Jerry (NY)
Dan the Man, i love the knockout clause in the bhop/jones contract. Is this the first of its kind? Do you see more of this in the future?
Dan Rafael (2:23 PM)
I can't think off the top of my head if that's been used in a big fight before but I like it.
Gutterdandy (Brooklyn)
BTW, Dan, thanks for turning me on to the new KISS CD. Definitely their best since Love Gun. A real surprise!
Dan Rafael (2:23 PM)
YES!
Patrick (Mexico)
Arent the cats celebrity guests?
Dan Rafael (2:25 PM)
I guess, but Thunder is asleep on the couch and Popo is laying at my feet. They don't seem to be in the mood to chat.
yo (np)
BHOP did that with JOPPY and Joppy was the worst for after.
Dan Rafael (2:27 PM)
That was not a contractual thing with a percentage of the revenue at stake. That was a side bet between Hop and Joppy. Hop said he'd give Joppy $50,000 if he couldn't get the knockout. Joppy survived, got a beating but Bernard paid him the 50 large.
chuzen (st. louis)
dan, is there any kind of rematch clause for pac-cotto?
Dan Rafael (2:27 PM)
No.
Jose Sulaiman (WBC Headquaters)
Dan Rafael's cats are now eligible for WBC Feline Interm Diamond Belt in Recess
Ray (Dearborn,MI)
Is Thunder named after Gatti?
Dan Rafael (2:28 PM)
Yes.
Tim (Denver)
Favorite place to go to cover a fight? And is there a place you haven't been that you'd love to go to just to cover a fight?
Dan Rafael (2:30 PM)
There are a lot of great places to cover a fight. If I have to pick, I love Mandalay Bay. I'd like to cover a fight in Montreal at the big arena there. I've always heard how great the atmosphere is and I know they have great fans there.
Bobby Cline (South New Jersey Baby!!!)
Do they give out free beer to writers in the press room at fights?
Dan Rafael (2:31 PM)
LOL, no.
JD (Vegas)
Joppy could have went as the pumpkin man for holloween after his fight with hopkins
Dan Rafael (2:33 PM)
He was badly beaten in that fight. I remember him coming to the press conference after the fight with a white towel over his head and thinking two things: 1) Dude, go to the hospital instead of being at a press conference. 2) He looked like ET with the towel and how messed up his face was.
JD (Vegas)
If you love the mandalay bay the thomas and mack has to be the worse place for a fight at least in vegas it is
Dan Rafael (2:34 PM)
Thomas and Mack sucks. I call it the Batcave. They should implode it.
Tom (Reading, United Kingdom)
DTM have you ever covered a fight outside the US and if you have how does it compare to shows Stateside?
Dan Rafael (2:35 PM)
Sure. I've covered fights in place like Mexico and Puerto Rico. It's all pretty much the same -- a ring, my laptop and a fight.
Dan Rafael (2:36 PM)
Although in Cancun, there was free liquor in all the rooms at the resort we stayed at.
Lars (NYC)
Do you ever bring the fam with you to Vegas on boxing weekends?
Dan Rafael (2:37 PM)
No. My wife did come to Vegas once with me years ago but only because her sister got married in Vegas the day after a big fight. So I went and covered the fight and she went to the rehersal dinner.
Alex (Louisville)
DTM, is Popo named after Acelino Freitas?
Dan Rafael (2:37 PM)
Of course.
Tim (Denver)
While we're on the subject, what are some of the coolest non-boxing things you've done while traveling for a fight?
Dan Rafael (2:40 PM)
When I go to a new city to cover a fight, I always try to do something non-boxing related. So, for example, I went to Little Rock once to cover a Jermain Taylor fight and me and some other writers and a couple of HBO guys went to the Clinton presidential museum. In Memphis, I once went to the civil rights museum. In Houston, I once went to a Rockets game. In Louisville, well, Louisville sucks. We went bowling. You get the idea.
Aaron (Hartford)
Dan, I remember back in the day, this chat was only an hour....then everyone asked for OT....now its just understood that this chat is at least 2+ hours. Did ESPN put the 1 hour restriction on you back then ?
Dan Rafael (2:41 PM)
LOL. No, not at all. There is no time outlined for the chats. I could do 20 minutes if I wanted.
Steve (NYC)
Will McCormack- Maddolne be on US tv? It should be all action.
Dan Rafael (2:41 PM)
I very much doubt it.
Dan Rafael (2:42 PM)
Doubt it will be on US TV, that is. I agree, it should be an action fight.
mike (costa rica)
dan wait till you see the picture of freddie roach dressed as batman today. funny stuff
Dan Rafael (2:42 PM)
I was sent it by the promoters. I saw it.
Robert the Genius (Philly, PA)
Do you ever hang out with Brian Kenny?
Dan Rafael (2:43 PM)
Well, I like to say he hangs out with me.
vance (montreal)
see a lot of celebrities at fights, but who is the biggest celebrity boxing fan?
Dan Rafael (2:45 PM)
There are a lot of celebs who are regulars at fights. Jack Nicholson is a big fight fan and not only goes to a lot of fights, but doesn't just show up for the main event. Charles Barkley is a big fight fan. Tony Danza is a huge fight fan. Eddie Murphy is also. There are a lot.
USS (Philly)
CUNNINGHAM, wassup for him?
Dan Rafael (2:45 PM)
Steve or Richie?
Robert the Genius (Philly, PA)
Popo vs. Thunder for the WBA interm magic cat belt
Dan Rafael (2:46 PM)
I'm in.
Jeff (Redondo Beach, CA)
Loser has to clean up the cat puke.
Alex (Louisville)
Marathon chat this week. I wish Larry Holmes went half this long last week.
Dan Rafael (2:47 PM)
He can't carry mine or Marciano's jock. :)
Jim ((Tacoma, WA))
When you were in Lousiville did you check out the Muhammad Ali Center? How is it?
Dan Rafael (2:48 PM)
Actually, when I went to Louisville for a fight it wasn't open yet.
Jose (Lennox, CA)
I can't believe no one has asked you the most important question of the week! Who do you like in the Campas-Camacho Jr. match up?
Dan Rafael (2:49 PM)
That is a fight I have zero interest in.
Josh (Richmond, VA)
Pound for pound during your writing career, who is the best pure puncher that you've covered?
Dan Rafael (2:50 PM)
There have been several. Among them: Trinidad, Tyson, Manny, Tua come to mind.
The Mighty Bobby C (Philadelphia Phillies Baby)
Do you ever go to gyms and see the fighters train?
Dan Rafael (2:50 PM)
Of course.
jose antonio (homestead fl.)
paul williams is looking for someone to fight,i would love to see him agianst floyd.you think thats possible
Dan Rafael (2:51 PM)
Mayweather in a hundred million years would not take that fight.
Adrian (Chicago)
Julian Jackson isn't the best pure puncher you covered =o
Dan Rafael (2:52 PM)
I never covered Jackson. He was before my time on the beat. But he was a GREAT puncher. I know I've had some his great knockouts in my DVD picks of the week before.
Mrs. DTM (at work)
I keep begging to be a celebrity chat guest, but so far, DTM hasn't taken me up on the offer.
Kent (St Catharines)
DTM. Just like boxing itself, is there a lot of competition or jealousy between boxing writers to get the best story or out do the other writers? Or is it more friendly in nature were you call each other for help if need be?
Dan Rafael (2:54 PM)
There's competition sure, but many of us are friends for sure. I know I have helped out other writers many times with some stuff and I have also received help. I think most of us would help the other guy out for sure, but none of us is going to just give up a big scoop or something.
Jess (Miami)
When are FNF slated to begin again?
Dan Rafael (2:54 PM)
I believe Jan. 8 is our season premier.
Bo (NYC)
Dan, I think Povetkin-Adamek is more exciting that Haye-Adamek (although anyone that will KTFO Haye should be lauded).
Dan Rafael (2:55 PM)
I like both actually. I think I'm a bit more interested if they were to make Adamek-Haye because they are the two more recent cruiserweight champions fighting each other.
Charles (Philly)
About today's notebook: is Golden Boy trying to get Rafa Marquez out of his contract with Arum? Isn't Schaefer already dealing with one nasty dispute of this kind over Victor Ortiz?
Dan Rafael (2:56 PM)
Marquez hasn't been with Arum for years, so no. And the dispute over Ortiz's contract has long been put to bed and that was never even a conflict between Golden Boy and Top Rank. That was Top Rank and Ortiz's manager, Shelly Finkel.
Wes (North CA)
I was watching the 30 on 30 about Ali vs. Frazier and had NO idea Ali was in that bad of shape(mentally and physically) prior to that fight. I am a little young and it was before my time. But I was getting uncomfortable watching the clips when he was getting beat BADLY and was actually hoping the fight would be stopped. I really enjoyed it though, felt I learned a lot.
Dan Rafael (2:57 PM)
Like I said earlier, I haven't seen it yet but I everyone here who has sent in comments said it was excellent. It's on my DVR and I will check it out.
Romeo (DC)
When am I going to be able to walk through Hatton wonderland again?
Dan Rafael (3:00 PM)
It could be awhile.
Robert the C (Greater Philadelphia, PA, USA, EARTH)
Were you in the media room of the Mayweather-Hatton fight when Hopkins and Calzghe started arguing? What was the vibe like?
Dan Rafael (3:01 PM)
Yup, I was standing right there. It got a little ugly. Both guys with huge egos yapping. It was interesting.
Romeo (DC)
What's wrong with Paul Williams vs. Bernard Hopkins on Dec. 5th at 168 or 170?
Dan Rafael (3:02 PM)
Probably because Bernard is fighting somebody else on Dec. 2 and has a signed contract to fight Jones after that? Think much?
Mark (LA)
They should put Abraham-Dirrell in LA. Every Armenian American would come out of the wood works to come see Arthur.
Dan Rafael (3:03 PM)
Not a bad idea.
Brock (Belleville)
Dan-o-lantern, I am surprised that even with all the freaks in this chat, you still do not have a wikipedia page. I think the Sports Guy might mock you for that one.
Dan Rafael (3:04 PM)
LOL.
Robert the C (Greater Philadelphia, PA, USA, EARTH)
When are you going to get a twitter?!
Dan Rafael (3:05 PM)
That sounds dirty.
Kent (St Catharines)
DTM. I know Tyson was definitely known to be volatile at times with reporters. Have you ever interviewed a fighter in which you thought he might hit you or physically harm you?
Dan Rafael (3:06 PM)
Yeah, the first time I interviewed Tyson, which has been well-documented in these chats.
Joe (NY, NY)
Dan...so the talk of a great undercard for Cotto - Pacquiao was just that. That thing is horrific! That said, is Korobov going to be part of the televised card with 5 fights, or are they just going with 4?
Dan Rafael (3:07 PM)
Korobov won't be televised.
Ron (Bethel, Ct)
dan, you want to go cover a fight in montreal cause of all the woman they have dancing around the ring!!!! lol
Dan Rafael (3:08 PM)
Has not thought about that, but it would be a nice bonus.
Adrian (Chicago)
Why is Pacquaio's name first in the promotion? I thought the champs name was always supposed to go first.
Dan Rafael (3:08 PM)
Simply because he is the bigger star. That was done for many Oscar fights when he would be the challenger. Editorially, I refer to it as Cotto-Pacquiao, the proper way.
greg (jersey)
Dan the man...............I have only one question..........There's only ONE ________________
Dan Rafael (3:09 PM)
Ricky Hatton?
Earn (Ca)
How many years after his last fight is a boxer allowed into the Hall of Fame?
Dan Rafael (3:10 PM)
Five years is when a fighter becomes eligible. I recently sent in my HOF ballot and eventually I will get around to telling you about who I voted for in a blog. I will give you a hint though -- I voted for four boxers.
Adrian (Chicago)
I'm 20 and have dreams of becoming a boxing promoter or writer, any tips?
Dan Rafael (3:11 PM)
If you become a promoter, learn to lie. If you become a writer learn to be lied to.
Alex (Clev, OH)
How many active future HOF boxers are there - RJJ, FMM, PAC, BHop....???
Dan Rafael (3:13 PM)
There are several. Off the top of my head I would say HOF locks are Jones, Hopkins, Manny, Mayweather, Mosley, James Toney and JM Marquez.
Adrian (Chicago)
Ali-Foreman was 35 years ago today!!
Dan Rafael (3:14 PM)
You are right. One of the all-time fights.
Justin (Sactown,CA)
Barrera, Morales HOF locks....
Dan Rafael (3:15 PM)
Correct, although I was not thinking of them as active fighters anymore. But, yes, they are locks.
Steve (NYC)
No Klitschkos? for HOF.
Dan Rafael (3:16 PM)
They probably both will also make it.
Shower Door ( )
What about me Dan? Am I a HOF lock?
Dan Rafael (3:16 PM)
You have some work to do.
Paul B (NY, NY)
How about calderon for HOF?
Dan Rafael (3:17 PM)
I don't know if I would say he's a lock because some folks might not appreciate him or vote for him. For me? I will vote for him for sure.
will (uk)
hi dan is there a website were i can view is currently on the HOF?
Dan Rafael (3:18 PM)
Yes, go to the HOF's official Web site at www.ibhof.com
RS3 (Stamford CT)
How would you rate the HOF chances of the following....Cotto, Winky, Glen Johnson, Vernon Forrest?
Dan Rafael (3:20 PM)
Cotto is working his way there, but I don't think just yet. Winky I would be inclined to vote for. On my ballot I would not vote for Forrest or Johnson, although Johnson is still fighting so even though he's older if he banked a few more big wins, he could do it.
Chris (Vancouver BC)
Wow, your still kicking? Just went for an hour and a half lunch and Dan is still going strong. YOUR THE KING OF ALL FREAKS!
Dan Rafael (3:20 PM)
Tell that to that fraud Simmons! :)
Josh (Richmond, VA)
More destructive inanimate object...Zab's shower door, or O'Neil Bell's hatchet?
Dan Rafael (3:21 PM)
Povetkin's tree root.
John (NJ)
Dan---Adamek to debut in your top 10 at HW?
Dan Rafael (3:22 PM)
No, because he is still cruiserweight champ, may still fight at cruiserweight and because even if he was moving up to stay, a win over a shot 41-year-old Golota does not merit a top 10 rankings at heavyweight.
Greg (Jersey)
Dan the man......One more question....Who's your daddy __________?
Dan Rafael (3:24 PM)
Not Pedro Martinez.
Justin (Sactown,CA)
DTM, it seems to me that there is some kind of "code" among boxing writers to not detail if a boxer A)doesn't train hard for the fight B)maybe does too much partying/distractions C)is hurt in training camp. Evey pre-fight story has the same angle, the fighter is hungry and the camp has been the best of his career. Thoughts?
Dan Rafael (3:25 PM)
I can't speak for any other journalist, but I know of no such code. You report what you know.
Tom (Reading, United Kingdom)
Can you tell Richard Schaefer to stop pushing for Rafa Izzy 4 I want to see them fight someone other then eachother that isn't a journeyman.
Dan Rafael (3:26 PM)
Yeah, well they can't make as much money to fight anyone else besides the other guy and at this point it is about the money for them. And I don't blame them.
mike (costa rica)
dan you didn't say before the fight golota was a 41year old shot fighter when some one ask you about the fight
Dan Rafael (3:26 PM)
Of course I did. It didn't mean I wasn't interested in seeing how Adamek would do at heavyweight though.
Eric (Chicago)
mayweather, first ballot HOF
Dan Rafael (3:27 PM)
Yes, easily.
mark (atlantic city)
diaz vs mallanagi any word where the fight is going to be
Dan Rafael (3:28 PM)
Still up in the air. Nothing 100 percent yet as far as I know.
devale (chicago)
Thanks for staying on so long, got me through my dreadful day. almost drinking time!
Dan Rafael (3:28 PM)
