Drew (Clearwater, FL)
So is Lee Roy Selmon starting this week? We need the extra depth on the D-Line.
Pat Yasinskas (12:53 PM)
Yeah, wouldn't that be nice? Maybe get Batman Woods out there, too.
Mark H (Greensboro, NC)
C'mon Pat, let's get the party started!!!!!
Pat Yasinskas (12:54 PM)
Party has started.
Carlos (Panama City, PA)
Pat, it's one of the few times I'm able to chat. Let's get it rolling early.
Pat Yasinskas (12:54 PM)
We are rolling, Carlos.
Lloyd (Baton Rouge, LA)
Hey Pat, Do the Saints miss Sedric Ellis that much or was Michael Turner running for 150 yards an anomaly?
Pat Yasinskas (12:55 PM)
Little bit of both. Now doubt they miss Ellis. But Turner was also running very well.
Tiny (North Pole AK)
Pat if Josh Freeman plays well but the bucs go 2-14 or 1-15 does raheem and mark keep their jobs?
Pat Yasinskas (12:56 PM)
Yep. In that situation they do. Actually, I'll have a column up on that on the blog. Scheduled to go up in five minutes. I say they win a game or two and Freeman shows promise and they'll stay.
Mike (SebaSaint) (New Orleans)
Will the Saints bring up DeMario Pressley from the practice squad soon?
Pat Yasinskas (12:56 PM)
Possible, but I know they worked out a couple veterans yesterday. Expect to see some sort of move this afternoon.
David (Greensboro, NC)
I assume you'll be at the Superdome this Sunday and I hope it will be as exciting for you as it will for me... one team is walking away 8-0. Anyways, will Sharrod Martin be starting again this week and will the Panthers D be able to contain the Saints?
Pat Yasinskas (12:57 PM)
Yep, I'll be there. Yeah, I think you'll see Martin again.
Bobby (Charlotte)
Pat read in your blog today about NO employing some 3-4 sets due to the depth issues at DT, this is something I have long wondered - why have the Panthers never attempted to do the same thing? We always seem to be 4-5 deep easily at LB. I know we lack the personnel to run this full time, but I can't help but think that adding Anderson or Connor to the gameplan in place of Hayden earlier this season could have been any worse.
Pat Yasinskas (12:58 PM)
Agree. But do you think Fox would actually do something that drastic? Guy is the ultimate creature of habit.
Josh Gomez (New Orleans)
Pat, I saw Pierre Thomas last night @ local radio show broadcast and he drew quite the crowd. I think he has become a real fan favorite. I think he has been playing very well this year. I would like your take. Has he done enough this year to make the saints think twice about using a high draft pick on a RB? Remember they wanted Beanie Wells. I think he plays a lot like Brian Westbrook. Do you think he will be a Saint for a few more years?PS- he seems to be one of the most humble and approachable players I have ever met.
Pat Yasinskas (12:59 PM)
First, Pierre really is a genuinely nice guy. Second, I think Saints are pretty happy with him and Mike Bell as their guys. Pretty good combo, I think.
Garrett (New Orleans)
Just wanted to let all the Saints fans know to stop dreaming of a perfect season and the Superbowl. Adam Schefter just stated in his 10 spot that it will either be the Eagles or the Giants representing the NFC since Wingo took his son to the game!
Pat Yasinskas (1:00 PM)
Saints' fans, wanna respond???
Nick (NC)
Is there anyway Fox can save his job even if the Panthers do not make it to the playoffs?
Pat Yasinskas (1:00 PM)
I think it's pretty much playoffs or bust.
Mark H (Greensboro, NC)
Is Jake on a short leash again this week?
Pat Yasinskas (1:00 PM)
Yep, think he's on a short leash the rest of the way.
Carlos (Panama City, PA)
Sorry about the question. I thought you hadn't started yet. Anyway, what's up with Elbert Mack? I was thinking that he was going to bench Ronde by season's end but by the looks of things it doesn't seem like it.
Pat Yasinskas (1:01 PM)
He had his chance and he hasn't taken advantage of it. Now, he's banged up.
MJ (Palm Beach, FL)
Since Freeman is now at the helm and the team is coming in refreshed, do you see this game as the crucial point of the season?
Pat Yasinskas (1:02 PM)
Crucial because it's Freeman's first start. There will be rookie mistakes. But if he can also show some bright spots, it will help the entire organization.
Baggs (Phoenix, AZ)
This offseason, the Saints released long snapper Kevin Houser and signed Panther's Jason Kyle. The Saints are missing FGs and XPs this year they haven't missed in the past. Do you think the problem is the snapper, holder or old man Karney?
Pat Yasinskas (1:02 PM)
Carney. Kyle's fine on snaps.
GRWatcher (Statesville)
Can you explain why Greg Williams would even suggest that injuring Steve Smith is the only way to stop Smitty? Even Gruden never suggested that. :)
Pat Yasinskas (1:03 PM)
Didn't see that one. Where was it? Can you send me a link? I'm guessing he was joking. If he was serious, he could get fined. More importantly, he might get Smith mad -- and that's never a good idea.
Matt (Raleigh)
Do you think the Panthers will be able to take advantage with their passing game if the Saints load the box?
Pat Yasinskas (1:04 PM)
Umm, it's not like Panthers have been able to take advantage of their passing game all season.
Matt (Raleigh)
Do you think Saints' defensive coordinator Gregg Williams might have his comments about trying to injure Steve Smith backfire? This quote was reported on NOLA.com "But what we've got to do is turn his little body over, so that when he does get it he lands on his head and he doesn't come back in for a while."
Pat Yasinskas (1:05 PM)
Matt, thanks for the quote. Wow! I'm sure he was joking. But, like I said, not a good idea to even joke about injuring a player. NFL doesn't like this. And I'm willing to bet Smitty has the quote plastered on his living room wall.
Mark (orlando)
Do you think there is any way possible Tony Dungy will come back to Tampa?
Pat Yasinskas (1:07 PM)
He already lives in Tampa. But I assume you mean will he come back to the Bucs? No, I seriously doubt it. I don't think he'll ever coach again and I don't think he wants a front-office role. He's got other things going on in his life.
Carlos (Panama City, PA)
Pat, I'm looking ahead at the draft now. So, greatest need for us (Bucs, making sure), DL, DBs or OLBs?
Pat Yasinskas (1:07 PM)
Better be a big DT.
William (California )
Why don't the Buccaneers start Roy Miller and Sammie Stroughter?? I mean Hovan has done nothing this year, and neither has Clayton, Other thing why don't the Buc's let Caddy run more?? I mean its very clear hes the better runner then all the others!!
Pat Yasinskas (1:07 PM)
Agree on the rookies. I think that's coming soon.
james (NYC)
if the panthers some how pull out a win against the saints, and atlanta lose this weekend do you think the panthers would have a shot at the division or the wildcard?
Pat Yasinskas (1:08 PM)
That would put them very much in wild-card race.
Corey B (Chicago)
Pat, agree with your take on the Bucs and Freeman. Isn't the source of their problems really the Glazers for blowing up the Gruden/Allen combo along with mandating the release of the veteran leadership.
Pat Yasinskas (1:09 PM)
Yes, to a degree. But, keep in mind, this team lost four in a row at end of last year with Gruden. Team basically fell apart. It would still have been ugly this year if they had kept that team together.
Guy (Jacksonville)
Do you think the Jags will move to L.A?
Pat Yasinskas (1:10 PM)
I think they'll move somewhere.
Andy (Atlanta)
Why are so many people down on the Falcons because they lost to arguably the best team in the NFL? By all rights, the Falcons could have won that game...
Pat Yasinskas (1:10 PM)
Agree. Falcons played a VERY good game against a very good team on the road. They showed well. However, I worry because they're very banged up now.
Tiny (North Pole, AK)
Has Derrick Brooks officially announced his retirement or is he hoping some team will get desperate enough to sign him?
Pat Yasinskas (1:11 PM)
No official announcement, but he keeps taking on gigs in the media. I think he'll officially announce it at some point soon.
Sam (Apex, NC)
I know Fox keeps everything he does secret but do you have any idea what the Panthers will be doing about a FB this weekend?
Pat Yasinskas (1:12 PM)
Think you'll see the TEs lining up at FB some and lots of one-back sets.
NCSaint (336)
Hi Pat,Greg Williams didn't say he wanted to injure Smith. After heaping praise on Smith he said you had to hit him hard so he doesnt come right back in. On the edge? Yes. Over the edge? No.Tell the Kitten fans they are making much ado about nothing.
Pat Yasinskas (1:13 PM)
There, you told them.
Tiny (North Pole, AK)
So Pat is Penn State gonna win this week?
Pat Yasinskas (1:13 PM)
Hope so. Mad at myself for booking flight right when that game is going to be on.
J.B. (Dunmore, PA)
Hey Pat: Just wanted to stop by to let you know that Lackawanna Trail got its first victory last week. Tough season but it will get better.
Pat Yasinskas (1:15 PM)
Yes!!!!!!!!! That's great news for my Lions. I'm wearing my Lackawanna Trail baseball hat as I type this. Seriously. Just wait until baseball season. Trail will be good -- my old teammate is the coach. Thanks so much for the update!
CJ (Opelousas)
Pat when you aren't gracing us with your presence and not watching football, what are you doing? Do you play X-box or maybe you watch Lost or something?
Pat Yasinskas (1:15 PM)
None of that. This time of year, I have no life other than football. Try to play a little racquetball to keep in reasonable shape, but that's about it.
Ryan (Napa, CA)
What's the story on Aaron Sears? Will we never see him in a uniform again? Sounds like he just was unable to cope with life as a pro football player.
Pat Yasinskas (1:16 PM)
Don't think you'll see him again. As for his issues, I can't comment.
DiMaggio "Magic" Spencer (Atlanta, GA (ATL))
Pat-Why do I have this sick feeling in my stomach regarding the Falcons and Redskins game? I think Jason Campell "Droup" and MeAngelo Fall sorry DeAngelo Hall will have a break game against my Birds!!
Pat Yasinskas (1:17 PM)
Relax, they're the Redskins.
Mark H (Greensboro, NC)
I think if the Panthers win the next two games (NO, ATL), they have a real chance of winning six in a row. After ATL, there are three winable games (MIA, NYJ, TB). If they pull that off, I think they can start thinking playoffs.
Pat Yasinskas (1:17 PM)
"One game at a time,'' John Fox said.
Paul Kuharsky (AFC South)
Pat, what did you dress up as for Halloween? My wife put some perfume on my head and I went as a roll-on deoderant.
Pat Yasinskas (1:18 PM)
LOL!!! I'm calling Kuharsky right now to tell him that one.
james:) (ny)
lets say that the panthers do not bounce back to have a good year what do we do about our draft picks, or the lack there of, do we trade pep if he still wont sign or maybe, now this is if we get the right price do we trade smith for say a 1st a second and another QB to back up delhomme just incase he breaks down again
Pat Yasinskas (1:19 PM)
Not gonna get into hypotheticals on Panthers now. Too much depends on how rest of season goes and who's running the show next year.
Richard (Ann Arbor, MI)
Guess we'll find out soon whether Turner's rushing game was a fluke. If Carolina runs well on the Saints, then the Saints' injuries might be catching up to them.
Pat Yasinskas (1:20 PM)
Yes, this will be a good test of the run D.
Carlos (Panama City, PA)
Pat, do you think the Bucs are going to fire Olsen when the season's over or are they gonna give him another shot?
Pat Yasinskas (1:20 PM)
Let's see if Raheem's there first.
Matt (Raleigh)
Drew Brees had a monster game last season and still lost to the Panthers, what do you think the Saints will do differently to win this week? (assuming you're picking them)
Pat Yasinskas (1:21 PM)
Saints are a completely different team than last year. They have a defense now.
Matt Mosley (Dallas)
I'm smarter and cooler and therefore get to be more condescending than all the other bloggers because I get to cover the "NFC Beast." If I could just work harder to mask my Dallas homerism I would be unstoppable!!!
Pat Yasinskas (1:22 PM)
We are the NFC "Stout'' over here, Mose.
ET (TPA)
Pat...in your opinion what's going on in the Bucs locker room??? Has Raheem lost the players???
Pat Yasinskas (1:23 PM)
Not sure he ever had them.
Mickols Sandwich (New Orleans)
Do you think John Carney is on any sort of short leash with the Saints? Would he have to outright blow a game-winning kick to lose his job? Do you know if Hartley is getting decent work in practice?
Pat Yasinskas (1:24 PM)
Suspect you could see a change there. When a kicker struggles and you've got another on the roster, not a lot of sense in carrying two kickers.
Polar Bear Jones (Decatur)
Is Curtis Lofton for real or do you think his tackle numbers are inflated because of a little bit of a lacking defense.
Pat Yasinskas (1:24 PM)
I think he was good last year and becoming very good now.
Pfiff (Baton Rouge)
Pat, Will Jabari Greer make the Probowl?
Pat Yasinskas (1:25 PM)
I'd vote for him. Make sure you get out there and vote.
David (Tulsa, OK)
Best FA addition in the NFC South?
Pat Yasinskas (1:26 PM)
Sharper and Greer. Worst -- Derrick Ward.
Adam (Ocala, Fl)
Hey Pat, with all of the kicker issues in Tampa...why not bring back Matt Bryant?
Pat Yasinskas (1:26 PM)
Think he might have burned that bridge.
Bob (colorado)
Hey pat, do you think that when someone who says they are a player or coach that they really are who they say they are?
Pat Yasinskas (1:27 PM)
No.
Drew (Tampa,FL)
Well then could you see Dungy in a front office Role in Tampa?
Pat Yasinskas (1:27 PM)
Nope.
Monique (DC Metro Area (N.O. Native))
With several coaching jobs looking more than a bit shaky in the league, and all the accolades being reaped on Greg Williams, what do you see as the possibility the SAINTS lose Greg Williams after this season to a headcoaching job somewhere else in the league?
Pat Yasinskas (1:28 PM)
He's definitely making himself into a hot name. He'll get some interviews.
Adam (Ocala, Fl)
How ironic is it that the Bucs are wearing throwbacks the year they start 0-7?
Pat Yasinskas (1:29 PM)
Ironic on many levels.
Bill (Laplace, LA)
Pat, at one time, Tom Benson was hated here, and was considered one of the worst owners in the NFL. Now, he's this lovable old guy. Whats the deal?
Pat Yasinskas (1:30 PM)
Easy. It's because Saints are winning.
Gary (Charlotte )
Pat, before last week I thought the Panthers #1 pass D was misleading, but after what they did to Warner and the Cards last week, I think they are for real, Your thoughts?
Pat Yasinskas (1:30 PM)
I think you should wait until this Sunday before getting too carried away with that pass defense.
RJ (Land O' Lakes, FL)
Hey Pat, considering the Packers and all the sacks they give up, do you think Jimmy Wilkerson or any of the Bucs D-Line will be very effective on Sunday?
Pat Yasinskas (1:31 PM)
Wilkerson's the best bet. In fact, he might be the only one with a shot.
Richard (Ann Arbor, MI)
Is the draw of the head coach enough to make Williams leave a good team for a lousy one after only one year? He's already struck out once as head coach of a bad team.
Pat Yasinskas (1:32 PM)
Probably. Depends a little on the money and the situation, but he might have his pick of several jobs.
john (Charlotte nc)
pat you hear it first 28-21 Panthers will win on sunday
Pat Yasinskas (1:33 PM)
All right, I'm saving that one. If you hit, we'll give you props next week.
james (ny)
I love double trouble but do you think the panthers could benefit from having the three man rotation that was so deadly for the giants last year? based on what we've seen of mike goodsen I think he's pretty good
Pat Yasinskas (1:34 PM)
Williams and Stewart are pretty darn good. I like Goodson too, but you don't want to take carries away from those guys.
James (Temple, GA)
I don't quite get why everyone is down(including you in your stock watch) on Ryan right now. They have played the toughest schedule in the NFC so far. Only one or two QB's in the NFL could've come out of that schedule with a winning record. Let's keep things in perspective.
Pat Yasinskas (1:35 PM)
Listen, I don't think I ripped him. In fact, I think I said there is no sophomore slump. Just that it would be nice if he completed 50 percent of his passes.
Jeff (Palm City, FL)
Pat, You were out at one buc place this week. As a long time time fan I am trying to see some bright spots, but have not really seen any. How did Freeman look? I am hope better than he did in pre season. I hat e to give up hope, but it has not looked good at all.
Pat Yasinskas (1:36 PM)
Practice isn't open to the media, except the portion where they're just warming up. All I have to go on is what I saw of him in training camp and minicamps. Great physical skills. He'll make some big plays. But there also will be the natural rookie mistakes.
Willie (Dunedin, FL)
Who will be with the Bucs longer, Aqib Talib or Raheem Morris?
Pat Yasinskas (1:37 PM)
I'd put my money on Morris.
Bob (colorado)
do you think that the Bucs meltdown last year and turning back into the yucks is because monte said he was going to be going tenn to baby sit his son?
Pat Yasinskas (1:38 PM)
It was a factor. But, more than that, I think they were just old and worn out.
Nathan (NC)
Pat, I keep hearing that the Panthers should switch to a 3-4, but I cannot figure out why. They are deep at LB, but the best 2 are under 240lbs, there is no one to play the nose, and all of the possible edge rushers have never played that position before. It sounds like a recipe for disaster to me - what are your thoughts?
Pat Yasinskas (1:39 PM)
Agree. Plus, Fox ain't going to switch anything -- especially not his defense.
Joel (NC)
Pat, don't you think you are a little slow on "NFC Stout" since every team had a winning record last year?
Pat Yasinskas (1:40 PM)
Wasn't my nickname. Some NFC South fans came up with that one and recently made me aware of it.
Jim Bob (Decatur)
Who is the top interior D-Linemen in the south.
Pat Yasinskas (1:41 PM)
Very good question and I've been thinking about this recently. Gotta be either Ellis or Babineaux. I haven't decided between them yet.
James (Temple, GA)
I don't mean to make this sound like an attack because its not, but do you hold Roddy White and Colston to different standards because of money? You said in your "Dangerous Player" article that White was having a "quiet season" but not Colston and they have almost IDENTICAL stats.
Pat Yasinskas (1:42 PM)
Basically, the "Dangerous Player'' thing was about guys who are dangerous with the ball in their hands in the open field. Colston's not that type of player. He's a great receiver, but more a possession guy. Roddy has the ability to make things happen in the open field. He did it in San Fran, but I don't think he's done it on a consistent basis.
John (Baltimore )
Pat, there is not doubt that Flacco has passed Matt Ryan. Flacco has gotten better, while Ryan has stayed the same.
Pat Yasinskas (1:43 PM)
Not taking anything away from Flacco. But I think Ryan has been the victim of inconsistent running game this year. They're both very good young QBs and are going to be good for a long time to come.
Jeff (Evans, GA)
Pat, do you think the Falcons will be in the market for a new kicker after this year? Elam is one of the best ever but has missed some crucial kicks so far.
Pat Yasinskas (1:44 PM)
Yes, might even be in the market for new kicker this year, if this keeps up.
Bill (Laplace, LA)
Pat, how much money is it going to cost the Saints when Colstons contract is up?
Pat Yasinskas (1:44 PM)
They're safe for a while. They just signed him to extension last year.
Corey "Squirt" Ferris (In Da Hizzzzouse!)
How cool would it be for someone to build a floating stadium? it could drift from the coast adn then out to sea for the game. Nice idea for New Orleans or Tampa Bay right.
Pat Yasinskas (1:45 PM)
Awesome idea. I could just float across the Gulf of Mexico, instead of having to fly to New Orleans each week.
cary (south carolina)
Pat do you think the Saints have a chance at an undefeated season?
Pat Yasinskas (1:46 PM)
A chance? Yes, absolutely. I'm not predicting or guaranteeing that by any means, but they've got a chance.
Rich (Chapel Hill )
Pat, who is the best defensive player in the NFC Stout?
Pat Yasinskas (1:46 PM)
Right now, don't see how anyone could say it's anybody but Sharper.
brandy (charleston sc)
of course u fly to no every week .... get off the bandwagon
Pat Yasinskas (1:48 PM)
I just go where they tell me to go and an undefeated team is going to get lots of coverage.
JT (Shreveport)
Any word on signing Sharper to a contract extension before his expires? I realize a long term deal would not be practical but do you think he would go for maybe a 2-3 year?
Pat Yasinskas (1:49 PM)
I think they've got to try to sign him and not let him it market. That could be dangerous. But don't go more than three years.
Rozz (Tampa)
Pat you think getting rid of the best cover corner on Tampa's team is the right thing to do instead of getting rid of the worst coach since 5 and 0 Sam Wynch
Pat Yasinskas (1:50 PM)
That corner's doing a pretty good job of getting rid of himself.
Danny (Gastonia )
Your crazy Pat...Peppers > Old Man Sharper
Pat Yasinskas (1:50 PM)
Saints fans???
Greg (Baton Rouge, LA)
If you had the choice to cover any division in the NFL, would you still choose the NFC Stout?
Pat Yasinskas (1:51 PM)
Absolutely. Can't stand cold weather. I've got good teams and good people to cover. For example, MNF game between Atlanta and New Orleans was about as good a game as you could ask for.
Corey B (Chicago)
Are the Bucs in danger of late season black-outs?
Pat Yasinskas (1:52 PM)
Yes, very much so. Unless, they're still on path to 0-16. That might draw some attention.
brandy (charleston sc)
Im just giving you slack you are one cool dude pat..... just playing with ya
Pat Yasinskas (1:52 PM)
It's all good.
Corey "Squirt" Ferris (In Da Hizzzzouse!)
But in all seriousness Tim Graham can teach you a thing or two about how to use these chats to further your personal life's agends and how to get dates
Pat Yasinskas (1:53 PM)
Haha. How much did Graham pay you to do that??? Tim Graham's an old, married man.
Paul (Tampa )
Pat who is the best running back in the NFC South?
Pat Yasinskas (1:54 PM)
DeAngelo Williams, but I'm gaining more respect for Pierre Thomas each week.
Lloyd (Baton Rouge, LA)
Tell the Gastonia guy to make up his own mind and don't count on others to make it for him!!!
Pat Yasinskas (1:54 PM)
Knew I could count on Lloyd, as always.
chris (charlotte)
Pat, is it weird that the only reason I got twitter account was so I'll know when you post updates?
Pat Yasinskas (1:55 PM)
Not weird at all. I'd call it awesome.
Nathan (NC)
Pat, old, married men get dates all the time...
Pat Yasinskas (1:55 PM)
True, but not Graham.
Greg (Baton Rouge, LA)
Would you accept my friend request on Fbook?
Pat Yasinskas (1:56 PM)
Absolutely.
William (California )
What has Aqib Talib done to get released?? I mean come on i have seen a lot worse from players in the NFL. And hes one of the Best players on the team next to Ruud. Just asking??
Pat Yasinskas (1:57 PM)
Lots of things going on behind scenes there. Couple more questions before we're done for the day.
Lloyd (Baton Rouge, LA)
I'm here to serve, Pat!
Pat Yasinskas (1:58 PM)
You are the Drew Brees of readers = nothing less than automatic!!!
chris (Charlotte )
Pat do you accept Panthers fan on facebook?
Wilson (Boone, NC)
Watch, poor Tim's wife is going to start following his chats like crazy now.
Pat Yasinskas (1:59 PM)
Cool.
Pat (NY, NY)
QUIT saying that you can't comment on Arron Sears- He is a public figure and he is fair game- The guy is either not taking his meds or something. But quit with the pathetic, "I can't comment." You sound ridiculous.
Pat Yasinskas (2:01 PM)
Listen pal, we've discussed this via e-mail and I explained in detail the laws and ethics involved. If it could be reported as anything other than a "private matter'' don't you think it would have been reported long ago by a whole bunch of media outlets?
Michael (Charlotte )
Pat, I loved you when you worked for the Charlotte Observer, but tell your former colleagues to step their game up! Getting harder and harder to read.
Pat Yasinskas (2:01 PM)
Go easy on them. They're great guys and great friends.
chris (Charlotte )
Pat are you comeing to charlotte for next week nfc south game?
Pat Yasinskas (2:02 PM)
I'll be in Charlotte for the Atlanta game Nov. 15.
Dan (Orlando, FL)
Pat- Pat in NY is right- There are no laws saying you can't report what is going on with Sears. You think the media would leave Tom Cruise alone if he had the same problem? NO THEY WOULDN'T. Come on dont be silly guy. IT'S EVERYONE'S BUSINESS!
Pat Yasinskas (2:05 PM)
Dude, there ARE laws. Lots of them. You want to throw out speculation and get sued??? Go for it. Unless Sears or the Bucs comes out and talks about it, you'd be opening yourself up for major lawsuits.
Mark H (Greensboro, NC)
I don't care about Aaron Sears. Go home Pat and enjoy the weekend!
Pat Yasinskas (2:06 PM)
Sounds like a plan. Thanks to all for stopping by.
