Scott Van Pelt (1:17 PM)
We've had computer issues at the worldwide leader and the person moderating is still drunk from the World Series. True story. What have you got?
Craig G. (fairfield, California)
Hey SVP, at this moment, who would be your Super Bowl matchup?
Scott Van Pelt (1:18 PM)
Saints-Steelers. I know Indy is unbeaten. I just can't envision Pittsburgh not in the game.
Don (Atascadero, Ca)
Hi Scott,What do you think of the situation with Raiders coach Cable? If the allegation of abuse are confirmed... should he be fired? It's not like he's done a great job anyway.
Scott Van Pelt (1:19 PM)
If they're 20 years ago, then the statute of limitations has expired. If he was asked about it in the interview process and lied, then yes. There seems to be a growing list of reasons why he appears overmatched for this position, so this just adds to the list of questions about whether he should have gotten the gig in the first place.
Dave (Norfolk VA)
Who in your ming replaces Freigen at UMd?
Scott Van Pelt (1:20 PM)
James Franklin was named coach in waiting. I would assume that's the direction they go in.
Marc (Charlotte)
SVP, have you been to the UNC Basketball Museum?
Scott Van Pelt (1:20 PM)
No, but I've been to Carmichael Auditorium and the Dean Dome. Does that count?
Shane (Los Angeles, CA)
Not a Dolphins' fan here, but when is the last time you saw a more electrifying play than Ginn's second return? I'd have to think all the way back to Barry Sanders' era to come up with one.
Scott Van Pelt (1:22 PM)
The Boise State hook-and-ladder is still the most ridiculous thing I've seen in recent memory because it was an amazing play and it was on fourth down to tie the game as the clock was running out. Can anyone top that play?
J.B. (Dunmore, PA)
SVP, what do you think about the Big Ten discontinuing prime time games after October? They have PSU v OSU playing at 3:30 PM Saturday when they could have had the prime time game of the week.
Scott Van Pelt (1:22 PM)
Don't they drop the games out of fear of cold weather night games?
J.B. (Dunmore, PA)
I saw the Len Bias documentary Tuesday night. I thought it was very well done and I do remember where I was when I heard the tragic news. What did you think of the show?
Scott Van Pelt (1:24 PM)
As I said the other day on the show, it was pretty hard to watch. If you lived through it and it impacted you the way it did me, it was not a whole lot of fun. But I watched. It was both heartbreaking and entertaining to see him play again. There's no telling where his ceiling would have been.
Dustin (Denver, Colorado)
Scott... There seems to be an awful lot of good NFL head coaches, either not working, retired, or doing commentary right now. If you had to bet, who do you think could be coaxed into coaching a team next year?
Scott Van Pelt (1:25 PM)
I could see all of them but Dungy coaching next year. And I think he'll come back eventually, just not now. And they're all going to get broken off. That means they're going to make a lot of money.
Marc (Charlotte)
SVP, what years were you at UM?
Scott Van Pelt (1:26 PM)
Let's just say I left in '90 and I was there for a while.
AMR (Cleveland)
Why is everyone so down on the Yankees? If there was no cap in the NFL, Jerry Jones and Robert Kraft would have 200 million dollar payrolls and a house full of trophies.
Scott Van Pelt (1:26 PM)
I have no beef with the Yankees. They make money, they spend money, they expect to win and they did. Business 101.
Joe (LA)
SVP, how was your Halloween? Best costume you saw? Weirdest hookup I saw was a Mario hooking up with a sexy Catwoman.
Scott Van Pelt (1:27 PM)
I didn't go out because I suck. My doorbell rang twice. The kids didn't even try. And one was allergic to peanuts, so he couldn't take the peanut butter cup. Really? Disappointing on every level.
Dave (Norfolk VA)
would a Bruce Allen (GM) and Jon Gruden (Chucky impersario) be the best initial fix for the 'Skins
Scott Van Pelt (1:28 PM)
That would be a giant step in the right direction. Make a sign and take it to FedEx. Oh, wait...
Clay (Charlotte)
Does Tigers chip-in on the 16th in the 2005 Masters count as a play more exciting than the hook and ladder?
Scott Van Pelt (1:29 PM)
Sure. That was pretty remarkable. People forget he bogeyed the next two holes and had to win in a playoff, but that's what happened.
SHAWN (ALBURTIS,PA )
WILL THE YANKEES WIN IT NEXT SEASON.
Scott Van Pelt (1:30 PM)
I'm not picking on you, Shawn, but there's nothing that we do more that I like less than telling you the day after a title is won who's going to win the next one. I have no earthly idea what's going to happen this afternoon, much less next year. But I think it's safe to assume that the Yankees have a better chance than the Orioles. No offense.
Richie Mikemond (French Island, Wi.)
What are you thoughts on Stricker's career? Real good, then changes clubs and struggles, then makes a great comeback. Also is he a nice a guy and respected by his peers? Thanks
Scott Van Pelt (1:32 PM)
The strongest endorsement you can get is for Tiger to like you and want to play with you. Tiger loves "Stricks" and there's not a person out there who would say a bad word about him. Not one person. His career is pretty unusual. Not many guys come back from where he was to be this good. And I'm just one of the many in the game that couldn't be happier that it happened.
Matt (Philly)
Why can't Maryland recruit from DC? Derrick Williams would have looked great across from Heyward-Bey the last few years, and Gary (who I love) has lost nearly every top recruit from Maryland, DC, Virginia!
Scott Van Pelt (1:34 PM)
There are some interesting dynamics in play in D.C. There are kids that I won't name who have gone to schools they never even SAW before they enrolled thanks to guidance from handlers. The recruiting world is a cest pool, and because of the amount of talent in that area, there are few pools as toxic as the D.C. area. It would be fun to tell the stories, but the funny thing is even though everyone knows them, nobody will share them. Maybe someday.
J.B. (Dunmore, PA)
Not much is being made about Hideki Matsui being the first Japanese player to ever win the WS MVP. Should this be a story? Seems like a great endorsement for the relationship between American and Japanese baseball.
Scott Van Pelt (1:36 PM)
I did think about Matsui last night. It's interesting that in what might be his last game as a Yankee, he reached the pinnacle. Outside of Ichiro, who has had Hall of Fame numbers, and Matsui, who has been very good, there have been far more wiffs from Japan than hits. I can't imagine how big a deal this is in Japan.
Craig G. (Fairfield, California)
What sporting experience or stadium visit that you've had would you recommend a sports fan must do?
Scott Van Pelt (1:37 PM)
If you love golf, you should see St. Andrew's and you should see Augusta National. If you love college basketball, you should see Cameron Indoor Stadium. If you love college football, go to an SEC stadium. The Swamp and Jordan-Hare would be two good places to start.
Jason (Tampa)
What is your perspective on Marcus Jordan wearing his father's shoes and costing his school (UCF) a deal with adidas?
Scott Van Pelt (1:39 PM)
Nike had better be ready to scoop up UCF as a program since they lost the Adidas deal because of him, and he'd better be good.
AMR (Cleveland)
When are you going to go on the road with Ryen?
Scott Van Pelt (1:45 PM)
I'm disappointed in myself because I feel like I'm talking a better game than I'm playing right now. By the time I get to the weekend, doing both shows that I do, I just want to relax. Old SVP would have been connecting to get to Eugene last week and spent the rest of this week paying for it. This week, I'm STILL exhausted and I didn't even make the trip. I ought to at least have a reason to feel like a tired old man. Time is running out on this year. Get busy living or get busy sitting on the couch.
Scott Van Pelt (1:45 PM)
Sorry the computers were late and thanks to Frank for typing through the champagne haze.
ESPN Radio (1:46 PM)
And there you have it, folks. The computer in the studio literally took 20 minutes to boot up. Tons of fun. Anyhow, enjoy today's show. It should be a good one. Stay safe until we're back together next week.
