Buzzmaster (4:31 PM)
On Thursday, we'll have some of our NHL experts stopping by to chat as a part of our Thursday Night Hockey! The chat starts at 3 p.m. ET.
Barry Melrose (3:01 PM)
Another great job by Colorado, their off to a fantastic start.
Matt (Albany NY)
When healthy which will hopefully be in three weeks, do you think the Penguins could win 65 games?
Barry Melrose (3:02 PM)
That's certainty possible with the OT wins but it will be tough. I would say its doubtful that they will win that many.
Henry and Linda Staal (Thunder Bay, ON)
Which one of our sons now has the best chance at making the Canadian Olympic team? Eric has hit some tough sledding while Jordan and the Pens continue to roll. Mark maybe in 2014.
Barry Melrose (3:05 PM)
I still think Eric. I know a lot of people love Jordan but I think that Eric Staal has the best chance.
Sean (Buffalo)
As Ryan Miller continues his stellar play, would you say that he is the early season favorite for the Vezina?
Barry Melrose (3:06 PM)
Yes, I think right now i think it's between him and Fleury of the Penguins. I think they have been the best to goaltenders this season.
Jesse S. (Carmel, NY)
Barry, how much is the compressed schedule because of the Olympics contributing to all of these star player injuries? Because this is getting out of hand.
Barry Melrose (3:08 PM)
Actually it hasn't been that compress yet and I'm surprised of all the injuries. The schedule doesn't start to get compressed until the second half of the season and I know everyone is surprised with all the early injuries.
Jack Wascher (Chicago)
With Jonothan Toews coming back into the lineup for the Hawks, how will his aggressivness be affected coming off of a concussion?
Barry Melrose (3:09 PM)
Usually a player that comes off a concussion takes it easy for awhile because to you don't want to get hit like that again. I think he won't be as effective as he was before the injury right away.
brian (iowa city, ia)
Should Andrew Ladd of the Chicago Blackhawks be suspended for his hit on Canadiens' Matt D'Agostini?
Barry Melrose (3:12 PM)
I'm with the NHL on most of their calls. Just because it's a hard hit, doesn't mean it's a dirty hit. I think Colin Campbell is right on most of the time.
Kahlil (Roanoke VA)
How much longer before the Penguins de-rail? Injuries keep stacking up for them but there seems to be no stopping them these days...
Barry Melrose (3:13 PM)
They've been very impressive. They are the Stanley Cup Champions and they are showing a lot of heart right now. I'm very impressed with Pittsburgh.
Tristan (Newport News, Virginia)
Are the sabres a legit team, or will they fall apart as usually
Barry Melrose (3:14 PM)
They are a legit team right not. If they don't run into injury problems like Ryan Miller getting hut, they should be alright. The Sabers are a very good team right now.
nick (AR)
Given the recent financial problems for some NHL teams, do you see any teams (Phoenix, Nashville, Columbus, etc.) relocating in the next few years?
Barry Melrose (3:15 PM)
I think some teams should relocate. I'm a firm believer that there should be 10 teams in Canada and 20 teams in the United States. I think in the next couple of years you will see teams leave for Canada.
devin (whitmore lake mi)
who win tonight wings or sharks
Barry Melrose (3:16 PM)
I would say the Sharks. They are playing great right now. They are playing as well as any team in the West.
Craig G. (Fairfield, California)
Hey Barry, in your opinion which 2 or 3 teams have the top overall defenses?
Barry Melrose (3:17 PM)
New Jersey, Calgary, and Pittsburgh right now are playing great defense.
jace (LA)
LA's #1 goalie, bernier or Quick 1-2 years from now?
Barry Melrose (3:18 PM)
I think Quick. He's an excellent goaltender and he looks awesome.
Tyler Connell (San Fran)
Do you think people will start to take the Avalanche serouisly or are they just going to continue to call this a "start" to the season?
Barry Melrose (3:19 PM)
It's almost 1/4 of the way through. They are playing great with a lot of injuries. I don't think at this stage in the game your going to see teams losing 5,6,7 games in a row.
Jesse S. (Carmel, NY)
Who will win their next Cup first, the Rangers or Islanders? Isles seem to be next in line for the Ottawa, Pittsburgh, Chicago transformation after picking first for 10 straight years.
Barry Melrose (3:20 PM)
Good question! I will say the Rangers.
James Velt (T.O. CA)
Hey Barry, where should the LA Kings finish in the standings this year?
Barry Melrose (3:20 PM)
I think the Kings will finish sixth or seventh in the West.
jared (pittsburgh)
do you believe that pittsburgh has the best third line in the nhl ( cooke-staal-kennedy)
Barry Melrose (3:21 PM)
I think it's one of the best lines in the NHL but I'm not sure if they have the best line.
Jason (Ellicott City, MD)
Will Team Russia put out a juggernaut line in the Olympics of Ovie, Malkin, and Kov?
Barry Melrose (3:23 PM)
The Russians will have an unbelievable amount of talent and are the favorites to walk away with the Gold. That's the interesting think about the Russian and Canadian teams, who will play with who?
Brad Trodden (Nanaimo British Columbia, Canada)
I was curious about Sheldon Souray's return date. Will he be playing anytime soon? I knew I shouldn't have picked him in my pool i think he played only 4 or 5 games before that dirty Iginla hit.
Barry Melrose (3:24 PM)
He's still on the IR. I think everybody thinks he's still weeks away instead of days away.
Jake (NYC)
The Devils are playing great hockey right now. Elias is set to come back either tomorrow or Saturday. Once he, Martin and Pandolofo return, can the Devils challenge the Penguins in the Atlantic?
Barry Melrose (3:25 PM)
I don't think they will finish higher than the Penguins in the standings but I don't think this is a team that teams will want to face come playoff time because they are so good defensively.
Tom (NY)
How come more d-man use the hipcheck? Doughty has thrown some nice ones lately.
Barry Melrose (3:27 PM)
The hipcheck used to be used a lot more than it is now. It is a very effective check when done the right way. If you go too low you can get a penalty for going after the knees.
Carlos (Los Angeles)
Do you think Frolov gets traded? What is he worth?
Barry Melrose (3:28 PM)
I don't think so. He's too young and talented. They are stockpiling young players and they want to see how he fits in with those young players they have out their in L.A.
Carlos (Los Angeles)
Is Anze Kopitar one of the best players that nobody has heard off? Thanks.
Barry Melrose (3:29 PM)
People have heard of him. He didn't have a great year last year that I think that's why people have forgotten about him. He had a get rookie year and is looking to return back to that form.
Barry Melrose (3:30 PM)
We have a great night of hockey on ESPN.com. Hopefully I get to talk to you again tonight. Enjoy!
Buzzmaster (3:37 PM)
Stay tuned ...Matthew Barnaby is up next.
Buzzmaster (3:48 PM)
Matthew will be here at 4 p.m. ET sharp to take your questions! Get them in now.
Matthew Barnaby (4:05 PM)
Seems like injuries and the flu bug are major topics this week. Whoever is healthy enough and battles through it will move up the standings. Let's get to the questions.
Moe (Detroit)
As much as detroit has been struggling to win their matches do you think they will be able to beat the sharks tonight?
Matthew Barnaby (4:06 PM)
Both teams are playing much better as of late. Both are really banged up with star players from both teams out of the lineup. I think this is going to be a great game but I'm going to pick the Sharks as Nabokov has been as hot as any goalie as of late.
matt (syracuse)
the rangers need a heavy hitting dman who should they go after
Matthew Barnaby (4:07 PM)
You're right. The Rangers are lacking that big, physical defenseman. This is the hardest position to acquire through a trade. Teams make you pay through the roof, so I would say they will be trying to do this through free agency. I still like the Rangers and think they have good upside.
Dunny (Boston)
Will the Bruins make a move with all their high draft picks, picking up a legit goal scorer to fill the void left by Kessel.
Matthew Barnaby (4:09 PM)
No, I think they will stand pat. This is a team that has been killed with a rash of injuries that they have occured. Trading Phil Kessel was obviously all about salary and I thought they got great return in this trade. Once they get healthy I think they will then decide how to improve the team.
Kenny Garger (Babylon, NY)
Would you compare the presence of Marian Gaborik this year to that of Jagr for the New York Ranger? It seems when Gaborik is on so are the Rangers, just as Jagr was and vice versa...when Gaborik is out the lineup, offensively the rangers don't seem to be the same team.
Matthew Barnaby (4:10 PM)
Gaborik reminds me a lot of Pavel Bure when I played with him on the Rangers. Every time he steps on the ice, you're expecting something great to happen. This is obviously a much better team with him in the lineup as they lack scoring. Keeping him healthy will be key as this team will not make the playoffs unless he's there.
Tyler ((PHX))
What do the Sabres need to put them over the top and back into the elite class of the NHL this year??
Matthew Barnaby (4:12 PM)
The Sabres are one of the surprises this year. They are really scoring by committee. Defensively, they've been very good and goaltending has been outstanding. Lindy Ruff has this team playing like a contender. I think as we go along they might need one more D and a little bit of scoring up front, but they are on the right track.
moe (detorit)
who do you think has a better chance tonight? Boston or Canadians? will the canadian's show their strength tonight?
Matthew Barnaby (4:13 PM)
I'm going to go with the Canadiens. I have not liked the way Boston has played and I think with their injuries this will be a tough one. An interdivision game with both teams hating each other, I like Montreal.
Craig G. (Fairfield, California)
Hey Matthew, who's your pick in the Kings-Pens game tonight?
Matthew Barnaby (4:14 PM)
I'm going to take the Kings at home. I know Pittsburgh is 7-0 on the road, but if there is anyone that can beat them, it's the Kings. A lot of young kids that want to prove they are for real. Tonight's the night. I think they break the streak.
Casey (Springfield, VA)
I know it's very early, but who do you see meeting in the Eastern Conference Finals?
Matthew Barnaby (4:15 PM)
I would love to see Pittsburgh and Washington. So many stars. So much offense. And I think a true hatred for each other. Sidney has a Cup. Ovie wants one. This would make for great TV.
Bill (Pasadena,Ca.)
Got tickets to the Kings-Pens game tonight, just wondering if you could provide some insight as to what Scuderi must be feeling?
Matthew Barnaby (4:16 PM)
This is a great question. He obviously will have some nerves and will be anxious for the drop of the first puck. He has great memories winning the Cup with Pittsburgh but he is also going to try as hard as he can to prove he was worth the money that he got. I'm sure he's having a tough time sleeping this afternoon, but it's always fun to face ex-teams.
Mike (Pittsburgh)
Any chance Pens trade Gonchar at trade deadline since he is getting old to pave the way for Gologoski? We could get a lot in return for Gonchar now rather than later
Matthew Barnaby (4:17 PM)
Absolutely not. Gologoski is getting better and will be the replacement for Gonchar. Pittsburgh is a much better team with Gonchar in the lineup. So don't look for them to make that move.
Denny (Chicago)
Do you think one more year of age will 1. give the young blackhawks the experience they need to win the cup? and 2. Make the Red Wings too old to make another long playoff run?
Matthew Barnaby (4:18 PM)
Chicago thinks they can win it this year. Let's remember they are going to have cap issues at the end of the year. I think they have as good a chance as any if they get the goaltending. Hossa hasn't played a game for them. Detroit has looked average on most nights. So for them, the time is now.
Jared (Pittsburgh, PA)
Who do you think should be the starting goaltender for Canada in the Olympics?
Matthew Barnaby (4:19 PM)
Based on performance, Marc-Andre Fleury. I don't think he will be the starting goalie. I think Luongo or Broduer will get the nod. But only for reputation and respect of what they've done before. Fleury has been very consistent and his team has played great. He's a big reason.
matt (az)
Barnaby!!!! The yotes need some scoring. Do you see maloney trading for some scoring help?? Do we have pieces to trade to get that scoring help?
Matthew Barnaby (4:21 PM)
Maloney's a very smart man and I'm sure is working the phones. They have a serious budget to work with because of the situation that they're in. They do have a lot of pieces that they could put together and land a scorer, but I think this is a team that wants to keep its youth and look to the future.
Casey (Springfield, VA)
Do you think Washington has enough defense to make a legitimate run at the Cup this year?
Matthew Barnaby (4:22 PM)
I think they have a good enough team and a strong enough defense but I still feel that they don't battle hard enough in their own zone. Pittsburgh had a great offense last year, but at the end of the day it was their willingness to block shots battle in front and take the easy play on their side of the red line. Once Washington figures this out, I think they'll win a Cup.
Chris Santarpio (Boston, MA)
how do you think the bruins will fair tonight without david Krejci?
Matthew Barnaby (4:23 PM)
This is another tough loss for the Bruins. I think Krejci has played better as of late, but he's just another star they're going to have to play without. Montreal is hungry, needs a win and I think will get one.
Tim (VA)
Can Anderson and the avs continue winning consistently?
Matthew Barnaby (4:24 PM)
I think this has to slow down at some point, as they are by far and away the biggest surprise early this year. I think Craig Anderson has played his way on to the U.S. Olympic team, but I don't think this can keep going for too much longer. I hope they prove me wrong, because it's a great organization to play for.
Scott (Sunrise FL)
Will the Panthers ever be good again? We have had about 3 good seasons out of 16. Not a very good % in a bad market. In 96 and 97 this town was all about hockey, and if they want the sport to work in non traditional markets, teams need to be good.
Matthew Barnaby (4:26 PM)
This team is going to struggle. They found a way to get a win last night after being dominated in the first period. The loss of David Booth hurts alot as he has been their best player. But not getting anything in return for Jay Boumeester last year to me, is what really puts organizations behind the eight ball. I don't see them making the playoffs for a while.
Bobby (Knoxville)
How much do the Devils miss Johnny Oduya not only as a solid blueliner but on the Power Play as well?
Matthew Barnaby (4:28 PM)
They seemed to be OK last night. You almost don't even have to look at guys names or numbers when they're wearing a Devils uniform. They find ways to win playing that boring trap and getting good goaltending. Power play had two goals, but Johnny Oduya is always welcome back. He is making a good career for himself.
Nick (Detroit)
The wings look to finally be on track, and they are only trailing the blackhawks by 2 points. Which team do you see taking the central this year, the young, but still experienced wings, or the young, offensive, weak goalied blackhawks?
Matthew Barnaby (4:29 PM)
I picked the Blackhawks to win the division at the start of the year. So, even though, you're from Detroit and you want me to say the Wings, I'm going to go with the Hawks. You are right, though, if goaltending isn't consistent, Detroit always finds a way at being at the top of the pack. I just think when Hossa gets back into the lineup, this is as strong a team as any in the Western Conference.
Michael (Chicago)
Is Jonathan Toews good enough to be considered in the class of Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin?
Matthew Barnaby (4:31 PM)
I love the way Jonathan Toews plays. In the terms of leadership, he is right up there. But when you talk pure talent or the capability of scoring 100 points a year, absolutely not. He's a great captain, great leader and will win Stanley Cups. But the other two are way more talented offensively.
Matthew Barnaby (4:31 PM)
Good luck to all of you tonight as there are a lot of games. Make sure to take your Vitamin C and be good boys and girls. See ya.
Pierre LeBrun (4:32 PM)
OK kids, let's rock
rob (ny)
Dubinsky just not getting the job done right now. What do you think about putting Artem Anisimov to center Gaborik and Prospal?
Pierre LeBrun (4:32 PM)
My concern in doing that is none of the players on the line remembering to skate inside the defensive zone at any point of the game :)
RJ (Boston)
Having stockpiled so many 1st and 2nd round picks in the next two drafts, clearly the B's have been positioning themselves to make a move on a big name later in the year, right? At what point though, is Julien going to get nervous and push to make that deal? The Pens had the timing right last year, but the B's aren't quite as loaded as that. Will they allow themselves to be patient if they are in the 9 or 10 spot after the Olympics?
Pierre LeBrun (4:34 PM)
If the Bruins bounce back and are in a position where they can make a run, then yes I think GM Peter Chiarelli will use those picks to try and upgrade. But keep in mind he's also got to try and re-sign Marc Savard (UFA July 1) so he's not going to want to add too much payroll.
Erik (Montclair, NJ)
Pierre, are you ever going to change your view on the Devils as they "surprise" you every year?
Pierre LeBrun (4:34 PM)
Have no idea what you're talking about buddy. I pick them to make the playoffs every year.Perhaps another Pierre you're confusing me with?
Def Leppard (Sheffield, England)
Pierre, thanks for being such a big fan. In your opinion, what is our best album. We will give you a hint, it is not Pyromania or Hysteria. Cheers mate.
Pierre LeBrun (4:35 PM)
Wow, this is amazing. What an honor ! I'm blushing !!!!My favorite is Hysteria. I was 16 when it came out. Had the jeans with holes in it to rock along to Pour Some Sugar on Me.Ah... memories...
Kevin (Winnipeg)
It seems like the surest way to spoil a fine goalie (next to sending him to Philedelphia) is to give him a good contract -- Kiprusoff, DiPietro, Giguere, Huet, Toskala, now maybe Tim Thomas, to name a few -- even Luongo has looked like less than a superman since he signed that massive contract in Vancouver. When will teams start learning the lesson? Never?
Pierre LeBrun (4:37 PM)
Well, Kevin, what's the alternative? You have to keep what you believe is your best option in net and that costs money. Believe me, I know of several teams that were chomping at the bit to sign Gigs, for example, had the Ducks not taken care of him. You can't always be right !
Jesse S. (Carmel, NY)
Which of the following players is most likely playing themselves OUT of the Olympics right now...Tim Thomas, Eric Staal, Vinny Lecavalier, Steve Mason, Cam Ward, Chris Drury, Ryan Getzlaf.
Pierre LeBrun (4:38 PM)
Great question Jesse.Right now the guys in trouble are Staal, Lecacalier, Mason (only because of M-A Fleury), WardThomas, Drury and Getzlaf still have jobs IMHO
Jesse S. (Carmel, NY)
Which of the following players are most likely playing themselves IN to the Olympics right now...Marc-Andre Fleury, Corey Perry, Jordan Staal, Alex Goligoski, Ryan Smyth, Craig Anderson, Steven Stamkos, Brad Richards, Dustin Penner.
Pierre LeBrun (4:39 PM)
what the heck, let's keep on going Jesse !IN - Fleury, Perry, SmythWould love to put Anderson on but not sure whether they'll want to push Quick out? Maybe, Anderson certainly deserves it.Richards has been terrific as well. Stamkos has been lethal...tough decisions !I saw Steve Yzerman the other night... it's not getting any easier for him !
scott mc (buffalo)
The Sabres look good early. Solid defense, continued maturation of the skill players and importantly much better on the draw and posession. Somehow and clearly a better team than last year without making any big moves in the off-season. GM Regier gets knocked here, but kudos are due. The question is what do you see has a weakness now or as the season goes along? Thanks
Pierre LeBrun (4:40 PM)
Yes I wrote all off-season and in the pre-season that Sabres fans should be patient. I'm glad I've been proven right so far.I'd like to see Darcy add blue-line depth before the March 3 deadline, the kids are playing well but some experience there would be key. Spacek was a big loss.
Jason (Ellicott City, MD)
Who can step in for the Caps during #8's absence? As talented as Semin is, I don't think he can handle the load.
Pierre LeBrun (4:41 PM)
Keep an eye on Fleishmann. I think he's an underrated offensive player
Tyler (San Fransico)
Why is it that Colorado is showing the NHL they are a rebuilt team this year and playing great hockey but people still have doughts that they will tumble to the bottom because of last year? They had a bad year last year finished last in the WEST but is that really need to be brought up to say that they aren't going to be a playoff contender team this year rebuilt. Everyone is calling this a "start" and giving them no credit for the future that this new Colorado team holds.
Pierre LeBrun (4:42 PM)
Tyler, the people running the Avs have those same doubts. They love what they're seeing, they love the long-term direction they're going in, but they're not 100 per cent sure the current lofty standing is for real.... Believe me
Jonathan (Columbus)
Reports out of Columbus say that the team is losing too much money and the Blue Jackets would have to move if the business model isn't changed? How much is this a possibility?
Pierre LeBrun (4:42 PM)
Jonathan, when an NHL team allows me in their books, I'll let you know !
Marc (Columbus)
Toronto has gotten points in each of their last 5 games, albeit with only 1 win. Are there any signs of improvement in this team? Can Phil Kessel take this team out of the league's basement?
Pierre LeBrun (4:44 PM)
Well I get to see a lot of the Leafs since I live here in Toronto. They are actually playing much better of late but the OT loss to Tampa was not forgiveable. At some point you need W's and a home game with Tampa is a must. Gustavsson has been splendid, Kessel was shockingly good given his time away from the rink... but ther's still lots of work to be done with this roster and belive me, Burke and Nonis are on it
Zach (San Jose)
Whats the one weakness the Sharks should fix before the trade deadline? Seems like they will be hard pressed to add other pieces because they are up against the cap.
Pierre LeBrun (4:46 PM)
There's always room to add at the deadline but the cap hit is minimal by the end of the season. (Cap hits work as active days on the regular-season roster; there's about five weeks left on the active cap after the trade deadline)Like the Sabres, I'd also like to see the Sharks add a piece on the blue-line. You saw with Rob Blake going on IR today that they are vulnerable there if he's hurt. Vlasic and Boyle are awesome but then it thins out a bit.
Federico (Rosslyn)
Last night was yet another example of Alexander Semin's inconsistent play. Do you think the Caps would ever deal him, and if so, what could they get in return?
Pierre LeBrun (4:47 PM)
It's an interesting question Federico. They offered him a two-year extension just before the season that his camp rejected.... I think they want to sign him but if talks don't improve... who knows...
Michael (Chicago)
Would the Blackhawks be stupid to trade away a top player to clear cap space in a year they are considered favorites to win the cup?
Pierre LeBrun (4:48 PM)
They really don't need to create cap space until after the season. New deals for Toews/Kane/Keith will take need space as of next season...So if they re-sign all three to extensions during this season, they can wait until the off-season to deal away other guys to make room....
KRIS (DETROIT)
What are the chances of Detroit taking a shot at Toews or Kane in the off season since they will have upwards of 10million coming off the cap?
Pierre LeBrun (4:49 PM)
Kris, the agent for Toews and Kane has already begun contract talks with the Hawks so I'd be shocked if either one was even still unsigned come July 1.But certainly, if for wahtever reason they were still RFA July 1, the Wings and a few other clubs (Toronto) would likely make offer sheets... that's my guess
Jared (Pittsburgh, PA)
Who do you think the captain of the Canadian Olympic Team should be?
Pierre LeBrun (4:50 PM)
To me it's a no-brainer: Scott Niedermayer.Steve Yzerman pretty much make that clear at a news conference in Calgary at the Oylmpic camp in August.... not sure why people thing there's a debat there
Bill (Pasadena, Ca.)
Pierre, why is it that H.N.I.C. is sooooo much more enjoyable to watch, than any broadcasts here in the states?
Pierre LeBrun (4:52 PM)
Well Bill, thank you, and obviously I'm biased with my small role I'm part of the show. First of all, Ron MacLean is the greatest broadcaster I've ever been around. He's so prepared, so quick on his shoes with a funny pun, and he knows the game inside out. Obvioulsy Don Cherry has a tremendous ability to connect with the average fan.And I've gotten to know the crew behind the scene, they are such a hard-working group of people who take the show extremely seriously... Hockey is a religion in Canada and HNIC is mass.
Sarah (Michigan)
Hey Pierre, i thought you were doing a Steve Yzerman piece this week?
Pierre LeBrun (4:53 PM)
yes Sarah, all four Hall of Fame features should be posted any minute now. Check again later today. Hope you enjoy all four.Cheers
Scott (Sunrise FL)
Pierre, In your opinion, the worst move the Panthers made recently. The Luongo trade and minimum return or not dealing JBo to the Flyers last year reportedly for Hartnell, JVR, and a #1. Was this offer made by the Flyers, because local media reported that more than once down here.
Pierre LeBrun (4:54 PM)
Luongo deal was brutal by Keenan. As for last year's trade deadline, the Flyers made a pretty good offer but I think there was pressure on then-GM Jacques Martin from owner Allan Cohen to keep JBo for the playoff run _ that was never was..I actually think Randy Sexton did a heck of job geting something for JBo at the draft given that he had one mor week in owning his rights
Carlos (Los Angeles)
Pierre, Based on talent alone. Do you think Kopitar is top 5 guy?
Pierre LeBrun (4:55 PM)
Carlos, tough one... I don't think he's on the same level as Crosby, OV, Malkin, etc...But he's right at the top of the next level...
KRIS (DETROIT)
WILL JIRI HUDLER PLAY IN DETROIT AGAIN?
Pierre LeBrun (4:56 PM)
Remains to be seen. Was speaking with Ken Holland recently and he said it's always a possiblity. Depends on how he enjoyed the KHL this seaosn :)
Def Leppard (Sheffield, England)
Pierre, Hysteria...really? Did you listen to "Love Bites" alone in your room with the lights off fantasizing about your HS crush. Any real fan knows we rock hardest on High N' Dry!
Pierre LeBrun (4:56 PM)
I know but it's all about timing... Grade 11.... ah....
Paul (Charlotte)
What isn't wrong with the Hurricanes? How do you fix a ship that's already at the bottom?
Pierre LeBrun (4:58 PM)
Strange indeed, Paul. I actually thought they'd take a step back this season but not this badly. The foot speed that made them so dangerous last year, something Boston couldn't handle on the forecheck last spring, just isn't there right now. That removes their puck possession advantage...Injuries have also been an issue but a lot of teams can say that.I know GM Jim Rutherford is working the phones as we speak. We'll see what he does
Jared (Pittsburgh, PA)
Do you think that the Pens have what it takes to repeat as Cup Champs?
Pierre LeBrun (4:58 PM)
oui
Michael (Chicago)
With the talent and youth they have the Blackhawks gotta win the Cup this year, RIGHT?
Pierre LeBrun (4:58 PM)
Depends on Huet. That's the question every other GM and scout I talk to brings up
Bill (Pasadena,CA.)
Pierre, over/under on the kings making the finals in 5 years?
Pierre LeBrun (4:58 PM)
June 2012
Michael (Chicago)
Given his heavy salary and the teams struggles as of late would the Hurricanes consider trading Eric Staal?
Pierre LeBrun (4:59 PM)
don't think so.
RJ (Boston)
WHo are your bets fro Gold, SIlver and Bronze? I got Russia, Canada and Sweden.
Pierre LeBrun (5:00 PM)
Russia-Canada gold medal gameU.S.A-Sweden bronze medal game.
KRIS (DETROIT)
What fan base in Canada is the most crazy about their team?
Pierre LeBrun (5:00 PM)
the biggest following is Toronto (biggest city) but the most passionate/relgious is Montreal.Take the time to go to the Bell Centre for a game and you'll see what I mean
Steve (Harrisburg)
Who should be captain of the Russian team?
Pierre LeBrun (5:01 PM)
Kovalchuk. Great, great leader
William (Syracuse,New York)
Who will be mvp?
Pierre LeBrun (5:01 PM)
Colton Orr
Steve (Dallas, TX)
Hello Pierre, I hope you answer a question about the Wild since Barry and Matt wouldn't. What did you think of their two Ws in a row? Is this a turing point?
Pierre LeBrun (5:02 PM)
I don't think there's any chance they make the playoffs. Time to rebuild. Just my opinion Steve, hope for your sake I;m wrong
Jesse S. (Carmel, NY)
Pierre, who will block more shots tonight in the Pens-Kings game, Scuderi or McKee?
Pierre LeBrun (5:02 PM)
if onl Karlis Skrastins could also be in this game the goalies could the night off !haha
Uriel (Compton, CA)
Do you see a scenario in which the Ducks trade Hiller and keep Giguere?
Pierre LeBrun (5:03 PM)
I'd be shocked. Giguere is the guy GM Bob Murray is shopping
Ben (pittsburgh)
do see marc andre fleury winning the vezina...and so far he has the best record why isnt he gonna start for canada
Pierre LeBrun (5:03 PM)
well if the season ended today the Vezina finalists would be Anderson, Bryzgalov and Fleury...Brodeur and Luongo haven't had their last say yet...But right now, I say Fleury is the front runner
randy (nj)
why does everyone insist that fleury deserves to start for canada? his numbers are only slightly better than brodeur's, and brodeur has alrady proven himself in international copmetition. yes, fleury won a cup last year, but if brodeur played behind those penguins he would have, too. fleury's time will come, but with the pressure of playing in canada, brodeur should be, and will be the guy.
Pierre LeBrun (5:07 PM)
I'm not insisting on that at all. I would start Brodeur with Luongo backing up and Fleury No. 3 at this point... history matters too !
Craig G. (Fairfield, California)
I like Thomas Vokoun and it's being floated that he's on the trading block. Do you think he would be a good fit for any team(s) in particular?
Pierre LeBrun (5:09 PM)
well he's got a no-trade clause so it's up to him if he ever moves... big money as well _ $5.7 million this year and $6.3 million next year
Doug (Minnesota)
Marty Havlat has been terrible to start the year. He didn't want to leave Chicago and people feel he doesn't want to be in Minnesota. Will he turn it around or is he trade bait?
Pierre LeBrun (5:10 PM)
I agree he hasn't been great but he's not going anywhere
Doug (Minnesota)
Im an assistant coach on a Bantam B2 team, first year coaching. Any tips for me?
Pierre LeBrun (5:11 PM)
Run the opposing goalie whenever your team gets down by 3 goals. That's all I did growing up in Northern Ontario :)
Mike (CA)
Would you rather have Bogosian or Doughty?
Pierre LeBrun (5:11 PM)
Whoa... tough one.I'm partial to Doughty cause he's Canadian :)
Dustin (Allendale, MI)
Jimmy Devellano has been recently quoted saying that it will take a miracle for the Wings to secure home ice advantage in the playoffs. What do you make of this statement by somebody in the organization's management?
Pierre LeBrun (5:12 PM)
I love Jimmy, actually spoke to him Tuesday night at the Leafs game here in Toronto...hey, the man speaks his mind, what's wrong with that?
terry ray (dublin, ireland)
with the buffalo sabres rolling four strong lines, do you see them being a strong contender this year.
Pierre LeBrun (5:12 PM)
yes _ as I predicted ! haha
fred (woodland, ca)
do u think the san jose sharks going to be disapointing in the playoffs again?
Pierre LeBrun (5:13 PM)
I hope not _ I keep picking them to win the Cup :)
Tony V (Sayville, NY)
pDo you see the Islanders making the playoffs this year? If not when will they??
Pierre LeBrun (5:14 PM)
If they make the playoffs this year I will cover Game 1 of the Stanley Cup finals in underwear only.Rebuilding !!!!
Jim (Los Angeles)
What's wrong with the Ducks? Does it take the playoffs to make them put in the effort they need to win?
Pierre LeBrun (5:15 PM)
Spoke with Caryle two weeks ago, he blames himself for not getting his message across to the players...Getzlaf tooka while to get going after missing most of camp... Blue-line additions Eminger/Boytnon strugglin.... Hiller only ok... it all adds up
Michael (Chicago)
Lets say hypothetically the Blackhawks resign their core, does that make them the Penguins of the West?
Pierre LeBrun (5:16 PM)
yes, minus the goalie :)
Paul (Gilbert, AZ)
So far Coyotes 6 losses have been to teams with winning records, and most are in the upper-echelon of NHL teams in this early season. Do you see the Coyotes continuing on the path of winning about 60% of their games, or do you see an incredible rise or fall from them during the season? Thanks.
Pierre LeBrun (5:17 PM)
they'll be a tough team to play against but no way they make the playoffs
mike (nj)
Who can the rangers get to play with gaborik?
Pierre LeBrun (5:18 PM)
How about Lecavalier? Just kidding of course, but as i wrote in my blog yesterday, what happens if things keep going badly in tampa? Torts loves Vinny... I'm just saying ....
Shawn (Michigan)
With the 50th anniversary of the goalie mask. Which mask was your favorite?
Pierre LeBrun (5:18 PM)
Kay Whitmore when he played in Hartford
RJ (Boston)
Hey Pierre, Here's one my buddies and I discuss every so often... if you could travel back to one particular era in hockey that you missed (so anything prior to the Dryden/expansion 70's), which era woud it be? Gotta be the 40's 50's Rocket vs gordie era, right?
Pierre LeBrun (5:21 PM)
RJ, for me as a French-Canadian kid, that's easy... I'd love to travel back in time and watch Rocket Richard play live at the Forum.. I get goose bumps thinking of it. You have to understand that Rocket did more just score goals for us French Canadians _ he elevaed our people to rise up.... check out the move that was done on him.... great flick
Jon (Fairfax, Vermont)
Hi Pierre, whats the latest news on getting hockey back to ESPN? Why can't you guys do Tuesday/Thursday/Sunday games? I mean no offense to versus, but you guys were way better.
Pierre LeBrun (5:22 PM)
Jon, all I know is that the league and ESPN have occassional chats but really don't know where it' s at
Ben (pittsburgh)
who do you got in the pens-kings game tonight?
Pierre LeBrun (5:23 PM)
LA in a 15-round shootout with Scuderi scoring the winner
Craig G. (Fairfield, California)
Hey Pierre, I'm a huge fan. There are some great games tonight. Which are you looking forward to most?
Pierre LeBrun (5:24 PM)
Good stuff Craig. I'm intrigued by Pens-Kings to see what LA does in a nice early season test...Also Habs-Bruins _ first game since Boston embarassed Montreal last spring
Gary (Florida)
Will Carolina End this down slide on Friday against Toronto, or is there anything in the leafs to fear?
Pierre LeBrun (5:25 PM)
Believe it or not, the Leafs have playing well, poitns in five straight games... not an easy game Friday my friend; check out Gustvasson in goal; he's a keeper
Matt (Orange County)
To Ducks: 1 line is good ant they will get better. 2 line looks much better in the last games, but 3 and 4 lines are very bad: Do you think the Ducks trade giguere for a 3 or 4 liner and draft picks or D-man
Pierre LeBrun (5:26 PM)
The plan is definitely to move Giguere _ but can they do it ? $6 million this year and $7 million next season
RJ (Boston)
Hey Pierre,WHo is your favorite Leaf of all time? Broda? Clancy?Bailey?Sundin?
Pierre LeBrun (5:27 PM)
A tie between Wendal Clark and Borje Salming
Mike (SB)
Hey there, which player is the best PK in the league right now, I think thats an overlooked part of the game.
Pierre LeBrun (5:28 PM)
Pavel Datsyuk and Mike Richards for my money are the best two PK guys in the NHL
Tyler (PA)
Which rookie do you believe will have the most impact this year because JVR for the flyers has really impressed me over the first weeks of the season
Pierre LeBrun (5:29 PM)
yes JVR has been awesome, no question... Tyler Myers amazing in Buff
Pierre LeBrun (5:29 PM)
Hey guys, gotta run. Catch us tonight with the Game of the Week !cheers
