Jon Anik (12:58 PM)
Happy Veteran's Day! Perhaps no sport in the world has more support among the military than MMA. A sincere thanks for all you have done and continue to do to protect our freedom. A ton of stuff to get to today, with Fedor-Rogers in the books and UFC 105 on tap this weekend. I'm here until 2P ET, so fire away...
Peter Lampasona (Oceanside, NY)
Alright, first thing's first. Miller versus Shields. I said this was fight of the night and top five for fight of the year. Then the next day everyone's complaining about the "boring fight." Where do you stand?
Jon Anik (1:00 PM)
Hi Peter. I certainly wasn't bored by the action, but also wasn't in your camp that saw it as a potential fight of the year. I appreciated its technical components and Shields' ability to dictate the pace, but I didn't think it was a tremendous showcase for either guy. I will say that Mayhem Miller is underrated.
Jason (Owosso, MI)
Sokujou looked overwhelmed. Was it his skill or training that failed him?
Jon Anik (1:01 PM)
I don't think it was skill or training, but rather the high level of his opponent. Mousasi is gifted and the sports seems to come so naturally to him. Always looking to finish fights, and has no glaring weaknesses. Mousasi is a pleasure to watch, and Sokoudjou was just overmatched.
Chris (Ohio)
What's up Anik? I love having all this MMA every weekend. Why don't ppl stop complaining like they expect a title fight every show. Just enjoy the fact that you get to watch a lot of fights.
Jon Anik (1:02 PM)
I'm with you, Chris. It's hard for us to do a 28-minute show tomorrow with everything that is going on. A good problem to have, for sure. I just wish we could do MMA Live twice a week, so we could give every fight and every card its due.
Mark Coleman (Hammer House!)
I represent Mark Coleman do you want him on your show?
Jon Anik (1:03 PM)
Would love to have Mark on the show in advance of his (reported) fight with Stephan Bonnar at UFC 110. I believe we've had him on once before.
Adam (Provo, UT)
Jon,If Fedor vs Rogers was for the WAMMA belt, why wasn't it scheduled for 5 rounds?
Jon Anik (1:04 PM)
The WAMMA belt was put on the line very late in the game. As a WAMMA rankings committee member, I wasn't even informed about it until after the decision was made public. Strange.
Maz (NY)
Coleman/Bonnar again? I thought Bonnar was taking on Krystof.
Jon Anik (1:05 PM)
My mistake. Soszynski-Bonnar at UFC 110. We will effort to have Coleman on in advance of his next fight.
Charlie (Philly)
How much to you attribute Jake Shields performance (though I actually enjoyed the fight) to fighting a bigger stronger fighter in Mayhem than he is accustomed to fighting at WW?
Jon Anik (1:06 PM)
That had a lot to do with it. But I still would like to see Shields get better and more confident with his hands. He belongs at 170, though.
Chris (Ohio)
Which TUF winner is more likely to lose: Pearson or Wilkes. Neither impresses me that much am I wrong?
Jon Anik (1:07 PM)
I am not particularly enamored with either guy. I think Wilks will have a tough time with Matt Brown, and Pearson doesn't have an easy fight with Aaron Riley.
SladeKain (VA Beach VA)
What's up Jon? This past Saturday was my first time seeing Fedor fight LIVE. Do you think Rogers performed better than expected or was Fedor unprepared for Rogers size and strength?
Jon Anik (1:08 PM)
I was impressed with Brett Rogers. He showed some ground acumen and the ability to get up after being taken down. I think Fedor was plenty prepared for Rogers. But Brett is a strong, powerful guy, and certainly a Top 10 heavyweight, in my opinion.
Mike (Los Angeles)
Is Marcus Jones going to be in studio for MMA Live tomorrow? It's surprising to see such a huge man with good BJJ skills.
Jon Anik (1:10 PM)
Marcus will join us by phone tomorrow to talk about tonite's episode of TUF. Marcus must develop his hands in order to be a long-term threat in the UFC. He's working every day to round out his game and is gonna travel to work on his striking with some elite guys.
Sacha (Warsaw)
Who'd you put your money on? Rogers or Carwin?
Jon Anik (1:11 PM)
It's a great discussion, Sacha. I think both guys are at a similar place in their careers. Hard to make a strong case for either one to beat the other. If they fought tomorrow, I might lean towards Rogers, b/c I think being in there with Fedor will be a tremendous resource going forward.
Steve (Miami)
Is Big Nog and Cain Valesaquez worthy of the 108 Main Event? I love the match up of old school vs new school. who do you got JA?
Jon Anik (1:13 PM)
Absolutely this fight can serve as a main event. It's so hard to handicap the fight, b/c we don't know exactly what we will get from Nogueira. But I'm not sure I'd bet on anyone against Cain Velasquez right now, even Lesnar.
CB (KY)
GSP said Swick has the fastest hands in MMA. You agree?
Jon Anik (1:14 PM)
He's certainly in the discussion. GSP would know better than I.
Jason (Bmore)
Do you still think Kimbo works his way into the TUF series somehow, and if he does, doesn't it "semi" compromise the integrity of the sport a little. I mean Kimbo hasn't really shown much more than anyone else in the show.
Jon Anik (1:15 PM)
I do think Kimbo Slice will get the first crack to replace an injured party. And I don't think it compromises the integrity of the show. Who would you rather get another shot, Shivers? The masses want to see Kimbo, he lost to the best guy in the house, and I would have no problem with him being the first guy picked as an injury replacement.
Kalab (Nebraska)
Swick Or Hardy who you got
Jon Anik (1:16 PM)
Extremely difficult fight for me to predict. Hardy is pretty lethal and he really has a championship heart. That said, I think Mike Swick is peaking right now as a mixed martial artist and I think he will finish Hardy in the 2nd or 3rd round.
Chris (Ohio)
C'mon Anik Cain over Lesnar? Lesnar seems to be just slightly better in all aspects. Including tattoos.
Jon Anik (1:17 PM)
There is no bigger Brock Lesnar fan than me. But Velasquez is ruthless man.
Paul (Isherwood)
Hi Jon - man-crush aside - would you admit that BJ is more of a fighter than GSP. BJ will fight anyone at any weight.
Jon Anik (1:18 PM)
I think B.J. Penn might be more willing to challenge himself above his weight classs, but that doesn't make him more of a fighter than GSP. St. Pierre is focusing on his division, and I don't have any problem with that. As I say every week, he wants to supplant Matt Hughes as the greatest welterweight of all time.
Newt (Jacksonville)
Kenny ever tap you out?
Jon Anik (1:18 PM)
Nope. He tries all the time, but my submission defense is pretty ridiculous.
Rob (North Jersey)
JA what was up with Hendo in the ring with Mousasi? On a scale of 1 to 10 how mad was Dana?
Jon Anik (1:19 PM)
I noticed Henderson in the ring there. All I kept thinking was that Strikeforce must sign him to challenge Mousasi. I don't think Dana gets all that upset about things like this. Fighters corner other fighters across different promotions all the time.
Logan (Washington)
I LOL so hard when i saw mayhem miller came out last saturday. who has the best entrances Anik?
Jon Anik (1:20 PM)
Hahahaha. It's gotta be Miller. Hysterical.
Paul (Isherwood)
Hi Jon - I am not buying that GSP is focusing on his division. Ever since Serra cleaned his clock he's been incredibly risk averse. That's why he's staying in his division.
Jon Anik (1:22 PM)
I would respectfully disagree. There were legions of people who picked Thiago Alves to beat GSP and he manhandled him. There is a huge size discrepancy between St. Pierre and Anderson Silva, and it would take Georges some time to bulk up and past 185.
Sammy (Chicago)
How is fighting Thiago Alves being risk averse?
Tony (Milwaukee)
I would hardly call taking on Alves risk averse
Matt (NYC)
Your boy Khaliov did a great job but now what? He didn't fight for the title and Santiago would be crazy to fight him again!
Jon Anik (1:23 PM)
Finally some love for Mamed Khalidov! Hate to be that guy to say I told you so...but what did I tell you? Dude is legit, extremely well-rounded, and ready to take on top 185ers. It's just too bad that Santiago still retains his Sengoku middleweight title. I consider Khalidov a champion today. War Poland.
Charlie (Philly)
Jon - I think you left out that Hendo was cornering Sokoudjou as members of Team Quest. Nothing out of the ordinary there. But speaking of Hendo there are rumors that he is working on a fight with the UFC possibly Super Bowl weekend - with Nate now facing Sonnen do you think Hendo would be facing Belfort with Anderson sidelined?
Jon Anik (1:24 PM)
That's a possibility. I still expect Henderson to re-sign with the UFC. But given how elite Mousasi is (in my opinion), I think it's incumbent upon Strikeforce to sign some top 205ers. I know they have King Mo, but that's just one guy and a guy without a ton of experience. If I'm Strikeforce, I overpay for Hendo.
Matt (NYC)
Why is the UFC jobbing Frankie Edgar? He's beaten Sherk, Griffin, and Franca and now gets Veach? Batman would not have been much better? What gives?
Jon Anik (1:25 PM)
I think we can all agree that Edgar didn't have nearly as much to gain as Pellegrino did by that fight. And, he has even less to gain by taking on Matt Veach. Frankie just has to keep winning and eventually his time will come. Life ain't fair, and neither is UFC matchmaking.
angelo (texas)
what are you thoughts on werdum and xilva, i thought werdum won it, also who are you picking for aldo vs. brown
Jon Anik (1:27 PM)
Werdum-Big Foot was highly enjoyable for me to watch. I definitely scored the final two rounds for Werdum. Disappointed that Silva couldn't keep the momentum going after dominating the opening round. But overall, a nice showcase for Strikeforce heavyweights. There is definitely some organizational depth there. As for WEC 44, the Jose Aldo era begins next Wednesday! That should answer your question.
Matt (NYC)
Manny or Cotto?
Jon Anik (1:27 PM)
I'm inclined to pick Cotto b/c he's a 2-to-1 underdog and there have been some distractions in the Pacquiao camp. Can't wait to buy that PPV this weekend.
Jeff (Midland, TX)
Can Fedor take a punch or what? The most impressive thing about Fedor is not his fighting. He seems like a great person and has his priorities straight.
Jon Anik (1:29 PM)
Fedor is the man. Great chin, deceptive power in both of his hands. Who would've thought that he would have the edge in punching power against Brett Rogers? Also loved seeing Fedor defend against the ground-and-pound. In terms of composure and poise, he's on a level with Kobe Bryant and Tom Brady.
jeremy (vegas)
mousasi in ufc as soon as his contract is up?
Jon Anik (1:29 PM)
Very possible, although Strikeforce may make it worth his while to stick around. He is the champion, and promotions always fight hard to retain their beltholders.
Matt (NYC)
105 picks, let's go!
Jon Anik (1:31 PM)
Brandon Vera by unanimous decision over Randy Couture. I like Mike Swick to eventually finish Dan Hardy, although it won't be easy. Michael Bisping is a slight underdog, and I like him to find a way to grind out a decision win over Denis Kang. I'll take Matt Brown, Ross Pearson, and I like Matthew Riddle on the undercard.
Brian (Milwaukee, WI)
Quite a large entourage fedor has...it looked like the end of a boxing fight, the ring was completely full.
Jon Anik (1:31 PM)
I want in that entourage.
Gilbert (Midland, TX)
Do you think that besides Fedor anybody from Strikeforce would be a title contender in the UFC
Jon Anik (1:32 PM)
Certainly Mousasi at 205 and Shields at 170. Beyond that, Gilbert Melendez is the only other guy who I see as a contender, were he to join the UFC.
Paul (Isherwood)
Hi Jon - not to be disrespectful to GSP, or his legions of fanboys - but his style of fighting has become extremely risk averse. Just watch him immediately take it to the ground if he thinks the other guy has any standup. Skillful yes. Heroic nope. It's all Serra's fault!
Jon Anik (1:34 PM)
I respect your opinion, Paul, and appreciate having you in the chat room each week. GSP prioritizes winning. Other fighters prioritize entertaining. If he can take Thiago Alves down at will and time his every shot, why would he stand and bang and risk getting caught? And for the record, the crowd at UFC 100 was oohing and aahing his every takedown, b/c he is so highly skilled.
Brendhan (Texas)
For other spectacular entrances I suggest finding video of Akihiro Gono (as DJ Gozma) and Genki Sudo.
Jon Anik (1:35 PM)
Absolutely, Brendhan. It was definitely weird to see Akihiro Gono enter at Sengoku 11 without any signature fanfare. Took care of business, though.
Brian (Milwaukee, WI)
How dare GSP do what he has to do to keep winning!!!!!!
Chris (Ohio)
I will say this to follow up on Paul's point. The crowd loves when GSP gets takedowns and then boos when Lesnar does and I hate double standards!
Jon Anik (1:36 PM)
Totally agree, Chris. Brock's biggest advantage is his size, yet he is criticized for exploiting it. Beyond strange.
Mike (Los Angeles)
When is Bellator Season 2 starting?
Jon Anik (1:36 PM)
April 8th, 2010 on Fox Sports Net, with a highlight show each week on NBC.
SladeKain (VA Beach VA)
Do you think Big Jon stopped the Fedor/Rogers fight a few seconds too soon or was Rogers done?
Jon Anik (1:36 PM)
I thought the stoppage was appropriate. I believe Big John will be on MMA Live tomorrow.
Isaac (Denver)
If GSP just laid on people I can understand how people would be upset but he's crazy busy on the ground. Look at the faces of the people he fights!
Jon Anik (1:37 PM)
The GSP supporters are out!
Nick (Boston)
If James Mcsweeney's opponent Matt Mitrione can't go, doesn't Kimbo vs Mcsweeney become the most exciting fight in the quarterfinals? Being that they are both stand up strikers, do you think Kimbo would beat Mcsweeney?
Jon Anik (1:37 PM)
I would love to see that fight, and I think we will. I think it's a great match-up for Kimbo.
Abraham (NC)
Did UFC put a free show to go after Pac vs. Cotto??
Jon Anik (1:38 PM)
That was certainly part of the equation.
Chris (Ohio)
Does Bellator air at the same time everywhere or is it like a regionally syndicated thing?
Jon Anik (1:38 PM)
The window is 8P-10P on Thursday nights. Inevitably, there will be some regional conflicts, and it will be delayed on the West coast until 8P PT. But it'll be pretty consistent.
Isaac (Denver)
You think Marcus Jones has a shot at winning TUF?
Jon Anik (1:39 PM)
I don't think his striking is far enough along for him to win the show. But he's as committed to getting better as any fighter I've ever known, so I'd expect quick improvement. I think the UFC will be patient with Big Baby.
Bob (Boston)
Jon, Coker mentioned two top level heavyweights coming in, I'm guessing Arlovski and Lashley. Do you or F-Mac have any word on who it could be?
Jon Anik (1:40 PM)
I think you are on the right path with those two names. Will check with McNeil and let you know next week. Or, just e-mail mmalive@espn.com
Tony (Milwaukee)
Is there a way to watch UFC 105 live Saturday afternoon?
Jon Anik (1:40 PM)
That's a good question. Not that I know of. Perhaps someone in the chat room has the answer.
Scott (Northern Kentucky)
Randy grinds out a decision. Vera is talented, but always underperforms at the wrong time. (Sylvia in Cincy, Jardine on Fight Night)
Jon Anik (1:41 PM)
I think this will finally be the time when Vera doesn't underperform in a big spot.
Chris Herren (Denver)
I think with all the injury and weight making issues going on in the UFC right now, Dana owes it to us to put Rumble Johnson vs GSP, IMMEDIATELY. I know he's not a complete fighter yet, but if there is anyone who can knock GSP's teeth out on PPV its him, certainly not Swick or w.e other scrub Dana has in mind.
Jon Anik (1:42 PM)
Johnson is still unrefined with his striking, despite the power. And as exciting and threatening as Rumble is, he just doesn't deserve a title shot right now.
chris (Portland)
I don't understand how you can put Shields as a title contender at 170 if he were to come to the UFC. Please explain how he can even remotely stress GSP in a fight.
Jon Anik (1:43 PM)
It's not a statement that he would beat GSP. Rather, that he would be in the contender mix right away. He's won 13 straight against a lot of top competition and has also finished eight of his last nine victims. I'm not sure I'd favor him to beat Jon Fitch or Thiago Alves, but he's certainly worthy of being mentioned in the discussion.
Devin (Chicago)
Is the rumored Houston Alexander Kimbo Slice battle going to be an MMA fight or are we changing the rules and giving them boxing gloves and having Michael Buffer do the intros?
Jon Anik (1:44 PM)
Hahahaha. I doubt the fight will hit the mat, but it'll be under MMA rules.
Joe (Chicago)
Why do they keep showing Rashad and Rampage get into their idiotic yelling matches? That is terrible for the sport - it just affirms all the stereotypes of fighters being thugs. It's not fun to watch either, they both just sound like crybabies.
Jon Anik (1:45 PM)
I think a good portion of the public would disagree with you. I think the dislike between Rampage and Rashad is organic and genuine and that's why it translates on TV. I do agree that it doesn't always cast the most positive light on MMA. But I can barely contain my enthusiasm for that fight...just pray it happens.
Kyle (Chicago)
Who will have the most success from the TUF 10 season in the long run?
Jon Anik (1:47 PM)
I think it'll be Roy Nelson. He's got the experience edge over everyone else and really knows how to use his unorthodox physique to his advantage. Also expect big things out of Brendan Schaub. Just not sure he's as powerful as some of the heavyweight elite.
Erik (AZ)
What time and channel will UFC 105 be shown?
Jon Anik (1:47 PM)
It's on Spike. Not sure the start time.
Joe (St. Louis, MO)
Jon, I'm still reading the chats every week, don't think that I'm not, it's just hard to post from a phone. That being said, what kind of damage do you think Jake Shields did to his reputation and chances of a big pay day in his fight with Miller? I can appreciate the grappling and transitions, however, most casual fans that watched the fight with me were severely turned off by that fight.
Jon Anik (1:50 PM)
Joe! Good to have you back, man. You bring up a good point. I am hopeful that fans will understand that Jake Shields is simply not a middleweight. Miller is more disciplined than Robbie Lawler and you can also argue that he is more well-rounded. Therefore, Shields wasn't able to finish him. Not sure how much this win hurts Shields in terms of his star power. But, as stated previously, I didn't think it was a great showcase for him.
Bill (Foxboro)
Tom Bardy vs Peyton Manning is the octagon, who ya got Anik?
Jon Anik (1:50 PM)
As most of you know, I was born and raised in Boston. But...I think Peyton Manning is better than Tom Brady...in a cage, or on a football field.
David (SC)
8 PM on Spike.Buy or Sell: Brendan Schaub moves to LHW for his first non TUF fight. I think he plans on moving down.
Jon Anik (1:52 PM)
Thanks, David. That would seem to be a tough cut for Schaub, but I'll take your word for it.
Freddy (Providence)
Lets assume Rumble Johnson knocks out Koscheck in the 1st round which I am assuming, then what? How many more until he gets GSP?
Jon Anik (1:53 PM)
You can make that assumption, but I won't. I like Koscheck in the fight. But, should Rumble win, I would think 1-2 more wins would get him a title shot.
Matt (Chicago)
Jon, every week I watch TUF and I can't believe that Evans and Rampage aren't fighting each other at the end of the show. How did Dana White let that happen? I can't believe that Ramapage and Rashad didn't have to sign some sort of contract with Dana saying that they had to fight each other unless of an injury-I just think it's bad business
Jon Anik (1:54 PM)
That's precisely why Dana White was so irritated with Rampage. You watch this season transpire and can only salivate about a Rashad-Rampage fight. It was---far and away---the UFC fight I was most looking forward to, and now it won't happen anytime soon. Travesty.
Rick (Charlotte)
whats up with Bones Jones? I just haven't seen the guy or heard about him in awhile, what's next 4 him?
Jon Anik (1:54 PM)
Matt Hamill on December 5th.
Finn (Seattle, WA)
Wouldn't be surprised if it were Kos knocking out Rumble
Harry (Cleveland)
Tim Slvia or Arlovski, Do you think they'll join the strikeforce HW division?
Jon Anik (1:56 PM)
Let me get my who cares folder. I think Arlovski will sign with Strikeforce. But if I were Scott Coker, I would be hesitant to sign either guy. What good does it do your promotion to sign guys who can no longer hang with the best in the world? You can't just sign all the UFC's trash. It's bad business.
Tony (Milwaukee)
Jon, do you think Strikeforce will take a chance and sign Josh Barnett to strengthen their HW division? Risky given his roid-issues, but he is super talented and is really the only guy who could give Fedor problems in my opinion.
Jon Anik (1:57 PM)
I'd much rather see them sign Barnett than Tim Sylvia, who weighed 287 for his last fight and who, in my opinion, has very little value right now.
Ferg (Omaha)
Since you are up against Kiper... who do you think wins in the Octagon, Kiper or McShay?
Jon Anik (1:58 PM)
McShay might have a cardio edge, but Kiper's got a huge reach advantage, that killer stare and, I would assume, a killer instinct.
Adam (Provo, UT)
I think Fedor vs Roger II happening are slim to none. Fedor has 2 fights left under Strikeforce. I see that as Werdum and Overeem...what are your thoughts?
Jon Anik (1:58 PM)
I would love to see a Fedor-Rogers rematch. But I would subscribe to your line of thinking. Don't expect it to happen, at least on Fedor's current contract.
Isaac (Denver)
Seems like Dana's not too keen on Roy Nelson. Do you think that will hamper any potential UFC career?
Jon Anik (2:00 PM)
I certainly think the friction between Dana White and Roy Nelson could be an issue for Big Country. I agree with Nelson's statement last week that he is just trying to win and move on. But there is clearly an arrogance there that is off-putting. And, at last check, Dana White is the most powerful man in MMA. Not the guy who you want to p*** off.
Jim (Acton, MA)
Do you think his fight this past weekend changes the chances of Fedor signing with the UFC after his current contract?
Jon Anik (2:00 PM)
I don't, Jim. I think Fedor is satisfied with Strikeforce/M-1 Global. I don't expect him to ever fight in the UFC.
Tony (Milwaukee)
I was surprised to see the UFC announce Chael Sonnen as Marquardt's next opponent. Isn't this a step down for Nate even though Sonnen did tool Okami?
Jon Anik (2:01 PM)
Perhaps, but who would you rather see Marquardt fight right now at 185? Might as well try to clean out another name who has some momentum, after the win over Yushin Okami.
roman (brighton,COL)
Hey jon- what do you think about mousasi vs anderson silva? or is mousasi to heavy?
Jon Anik (2:02 PM)
Mousasi is definitely not too heavy for Anderson Silva. He just fights for a different promotion right now.
Lee (Maryland)
Jon, do you really think the WAMMA belt holds any value what so ever? It's a complete farce to me. Why doesn't Strikeforce just strip Overeem of his belt since he refuses to defend it in the States? Coupled with the late WAMMA "title shot", this makes Strikeforce look like amateurs in running a MMA organization.
Jon Anik (2:03 PM)
I think WAMMA has a lot of work to do to become relevant/gain acceptance. As for Overeem, it's time to strip the man of his title, or demand he defend it within 3-4 months.
Paul (Isherwood)
Hi Jon - do you think Dana's strategy of bashing anything non-UFC is actually making it less likely fedor ever comes over to the right side. In all the interviews all you ever hear is that Fedor wants to be respected.
Jon Anik (2:04 PM)
I don't think Dana's comments are the issue with Fedor choosing Strikeforce over the UFC. Clearly, the UFC's offer was better monetarily, and he still spurned them. You have to think, behind closed doors, that Fedor is highly respected by the UFC. And their offer was a huge sign of respect.
Evan (SLC)
In your opinion, is Ortiz vs. Griffin 2 a worthy main event?
Jon Anik (2:05 PM)
Yes. Tito Ortiz is a PPV juggernaut and, in my eyes, will always be worthy of main-event status. I am hoping he gets back to the top of the light heavyweight division, b/c I think it would be great for the sport and the UFC.
Tyler (North Carolina)
What's it like calling the Bellator fights with Jason Chambers? Are you two still going to be the crew for season two?
Jon Anik (2:07 PM)
There has been no greater thrill for me as a broadcaster than to call live MMA fights cageside for Bellator. I am hopeful that I will be back for Season 2 and beyond.
Stephen (England)
Any update on Brock vs. Mono? Is Mono still winning?
Jon Anik (2:08 PM)
Hahaha. Well put. Mononucleosis still leading on all three judges scorecards.
Herm Edwards (in defense of GSP's style)
YOU PLAY TO WIN THE GAME! Or fight. Whichever.
Mustard (Toronto)
Why was it not known that the WAMMA belt was up for grabs. Would this not have pulled in some more PPV for Strikeforce? It just seems that this was a mismanaged and missed opportunity for them.
Jon Anik (2:09 PM)
Mustard, the Strikeforce card was free on CBS. And I don't think knowledge of the WAMMA belt being on the line would have had any impact on viewers/ratings. Most of the masses don't really recognize WAMMA as anything significant right now. Perhaps down the line, but not right now.
Jalen (Toledo)
Do you think Chuck Lidell will fight Kimbo Slice, or is that Houston Alexander that will get to knock out Kimbo?
Jon Anik (2:10 PM)
I still think a Liddell-Kimbo fight is a distinct possibility. But it'll be Houston Alexander who gets the first official shot at Kimbo in the Octagon.
Jason (Owosso, MI)
Will we ever see an MMA Network like the NFL network?
Jon Anik (2:10 PM)
Good question, Jason. There is certainly enough going on in MMA to cover the sport 24/7. It's a ways off, but I like the way you think.
Jeff (Midland, TX)
I am not sure Mononucleosis has ever lost a fight.
Steve (Hartford)
Will Grove win and if he loses is he out of the UFC?
Jon Anik (2:11 PM)
Stephan Bonnar has been training with Jake Rosholt for his fight with Kendall Grove and Bonnar couldn't stop raving about Rosholt. I like Jake in the fight, but I don't think a loss will result in Grove being cut.
Chris (Alabama)
I would pay to see chuck vs kimbo!
Jon Anik (2:12 PM)
So would many, many others.
Adam (Provo, UT)
I've heard multiple MMA enthusiasts say Alistair Overeem may be the guy to beat Fedor. Why? What has he done in his career to prove he can hang with Fedor? Plus, he'll need to pass drug tests here in the US before he can defend his belt.
Jon Anik (2:13 PM)
Overeem is a talented fighter capable of winning a fight a number of different ways. He's also one of the few guys who can match Fedor in terms of experience. That said, fans are highly skeptical of Overeem b/c of his seeming reluctance to fight stateside.
Brendhan (Texas)
Lesnar and Fedor have the same number of fights over the past 2 1/2 years. Why don't people give Brock a hard time for inactivity in the same way they do Emelianenko?
Jon Anik (2:14 PM)
Brock wants to fight, Bren. I did the first interview with Lesnar after both UFC 91 and UFC 100 and off the air, all he kept saying was that he wants to fight 3-4 times/year. Lesnar is sick. Also, he was supposed to fight Mir at UFC 98 in May, but Mir was forced to pull out. That contributed to his inactivity as well. If healthy, Brock will fight three times in 2010.
Brendhan (Texas)
Why do people seem to forget Overeem passed a drug test to win the Strikeforce title and has never actually failed a drug test regardless of his physique? There are UFC fighters who have actually tested POSITIVE for steroids that take less flak than Alistair.
Jon Anik (2:15 PM)
Fair point, and that's why I'm posting your questions twice in a row. Still, we are without explanation as to why he hasn't fought in the U.S. since late 2007.
Rory O' Shea (Dublin)
Who do you like when Kongo faces Mir? That should be a serious slugfest!
Jon Anik (2:16 PM)
Great fight on paper. If Mir is able to take Kongo down (most elite heavyweights can), I expect he will submit him fairly quickly. But Kongo, in my mind, is the best heavyweight striker in MMA. Tantalizing match-up by Joe Silva.
Tyler (North Carolina)
With a Pacquiao loss, does Chad Dawson take over as the P4P king? Dude is scary good.
Jon Anik (2:17 PM)
Dude is scary good, but was way too cautious for my liking on Saturday night against Glen Johnson. I was in the building with all of his fans, and they spent most of the night booing his lack of a sense of urgency. Never once went for the KO.
Joe (Chicago)
Is Shogun - Machida rematch on?
Jon Anik (2:18 PM)
Delayed b/c Lyoto needs hand surgery. But it will happen.
Ken (Pittsburgh)
Jon, Is the MMA Live Curse contagious over the phone? Marcus Jones wants to know.
Jon Anik (2:18 PM)
Ha. If there was a curse, how do you explain Marcus Jones' win?
sacha (Warsaw)
Valuev to UFC/SF now?
Jon Anik (2:18 PM)
I guess they would need to establish a super-heavyweight division first.
Ken (Pittsburgh)
IMO, Dawson-Johnson was much less exciting than Shields-Mayhem.
Jon Anik (2:20 PM)
Totally agree. That Dawson-Johnson fight did nothing for me, or the crowd. No one was there in Hartford. No electricity in the building. No jumbotron, no round clock, no replays. I honestly felt as though I was attending boxing's funeral. This weekend with Pacquiao-Cotto will be much different.
Chris (Alabama)
Do you think they will ever put in a 195lbs and 230lbs devision?
Jon Anik (2:20 PM)
Nope. Five champions is plenty, and it's easy to follow.
Dre (Atl)
Does a Couture win get him a title shot at the Machida - Rua winner?
Jon Anik (2:20 PM)
I think so.
Steve (Hartford)
Noticed Doomsday is fighting soon against a journeyman. You like his potential?
Jon Anik (2:21 PM)
Definitely a fan of John Howard's. Not a lot of people expected him to beat Tamdan McCrory, and he wiped the mat with him.
angelo (texas)
hey what do you think about all the negativity from other sports comparing cheap shots to mma
Jon Anik (2:21 PM)
A lot of ignorant people out there, many of whom are unwilling to be educated. I try not to listen to that noise.
Charlie (Philly)
Marcus Jones' win does not count as an official fight - not that I believe in the MMA Live curse.
Jon Anik (2:22 PM)
Hahahahahahaha
Dan (chicago, il)
Who are the other WAMMA champions?
Jon Anik (2:22 PM)
Only one- Shinya Aoki at 155.
Evan (SLC)
Hypothetically speaking, if Cain V. ever wins the title, could you see a possible rivalry with Dos Santos for years to come? It could be the new Couture vs. Liddell.
Jon Anik (2:23 PM)
I think the UFC's heavyweight division is in great hands. As my good friend Kevin Iole has said, you could end up having several trilogies involving the likes of Lesnar, Carwin, Velasquez, and Dos Santos. Pretty exciting stuff.
M (NYC)
jon - you overlooked my hilarious comment about the deplorable interpreter employed by Fedor. how would you rate Fedor's foot play?
Jon Anik (2:24 PM)
Didn't even see it, man. We're packed in here today.
Brian (Milwaukee, WI)
Now that Aoki is going to fight in the US with Strikeforce, are you dreaming of a rematch between Aoki and Alvarez in the US?
Jon Anik (2:24 PM)
I'd like to see Aoki fight any number of top 155ers in the U.S. I know Florian has been talking about fighting Shinya since I met him.
Dan (Chicago)
thoughts on sf cancelling the miller-davis fight. pretty unprofessional dont your think?
Jon Anik (2:25 PM)
It happens, Dan. One of the inconvenient truths in MMA. It's rare, but it happens. I think the best solution is to also pay each fighter a win bonus, in addition to the 'show' purse.
Sal (Chicago)
Dana White is smart business man but a Hypocrite. He criticizes boxing saying that the promoters ruin the sport, he's doing the same thing. He's just benefited from having the best promotion. Agree?
Jon Anik (2:27 PM)
I think there is some truth to that, yes. But Dana White has built the UFC into what it is today. I know I get criticized for some of my pro-Bellator stances. But what distinguishes Bellator is that it removes matchmaking from the process. The fighters control their own destiny, which makes it pure sport, like the NFL, NBA, and MLB.
Hondo (Boston, MA)
I'm know I am late to this party, but anyone who misses weight like Rumble Johnson did doesn't deserve a title shot until they prove they can make weight. Missing like that for a professional is inexcusable.
Jon Anik (2:27 PM)
No argument here, Hondo.
Tony (Milwaukee)
Jon, How do you see Ortiz/Griffin playing out? I mean, Tito has been away from the cage for A LONG time, and Forrest must be under a ton of pressure given his last embarassing loss.
Jon Anik (2:29 PM)
I don't think it's a great spot for Forrest Griffin. He is taking the fight on short notice and Tito is on a serious mission right now. Now, some may say it's the best time to get Ortiz, b/c of ring rust, etc. I think Tito's been in the fight game long enough to know how to prepare, and I think he will beat Forrest.
Josh (L.A.)
As someone ignorant on Bellator, please explain how the fighters control their own destiny
Jon Anik (2:30 PM)
Tournament format, Josh. You win, you move on. Matchmaking isn't a part of the process. Bellator sets up an NCAA-style bracket, and the fighters take it from there.
STEVE (Windsor)
Couture vs Machida, who ya got?
Jon Anik (2:30 PM)
Don't you mean Vera vs. Machida? I don't think Couture gets by Vera this weekend.
Ken (Pittsburgh)
Do you think Strikeforce could find its niche as the "Network" MMA brand? They could promote 4 big fights a year and generate buzz and sponsors, while doing Showtime and regional shows in-between. The UFC owns the PPV market, but Dana's refusal to go on network TV has opened at least one outlet for the UFC's main competition, imo.
Jon Anik (2:31 PM)
Strikeforce needs to be on TV more often to continue its momentum. When will we see Fedor on CBS again? I also think it's only a matter of time before Dana strikes a network TV deal.
Damian (Los Angeles)
Is there any kind of statute of limitations on the Strikforce Heavyweight title? Do you think there's any chance Overeem just vacates it?
Jon Anik (2:32 PM)
I don't think Overeem will vacate. But I could see Strikeforce developing an interim title for the (expected) fight between Fedor and Werdum. That would give Overeem more time...to do whatever he does overseas...K-1, DREAM, etc.
Evan (SLC)
If Vera wins, will he get a shot at the title before Shogun gets his rematch?
Jon Anik (2:33 PM)
Nope. And there is no guarantee that Vera will even get a title shot by beating Couture.
Charlie (Philly)
Dana has sweared by the statement that a Network deal will be done by the end of the year. It has to be ABC/ESPN - only one left SF has CBS and Bellator has NBC.
Jon Anik (2:33 PM)
No inside dirt here. We shall see, Chuck.
Tyler (North Carolina)
Still got Toby Imada for submission of the year? I don't see anyone beating that.
Jon Anik (2:34 PM)
Absolutely. If you haven't seen the ridiculous inverted triangle choke, go to Bellator's youtube page.
Brendhan (Texas)
RE: Miller/Davis. Strikeforce has in fact paid their fee to show at the event AND the win bonuses either could have earned through victory.
Jon Anik (2:34 PM)
That makes me feel better. I had read that they only paid them 'show' money. Good to hear.
Adam (Provo, UT)
Come clean Jon...McNeil owns a snuggie
Jon Anik (2:35 PM)
How'd you know? Kenny bought everyone snuggies with his Joe Stevenson win bonus.
Chabayev (Poland)
Did u watch (my friends)Khalidov's fight at Sengoku? ) What do u think about it?
Jon Anik (2:35 PM)
Mamed rules. I hope some of you played him at +215. I gave you the free play, did I not?
Sammy (Chicago)
All Fedor would have to do to beat Overeem is ask him to pee in a cup...
Jon Anik (2:36 PM)
Ouch.
John (San Diego)
Is there anyone out of the new Ultimate Fighter house that would be able to ascend to the top of the heavyweight division?
Jon Anik (2:37 PM)
Perhaps Roy Nelson, but I don't really see anyone in the house as a future UFC heavyweight champ.
Tyler (North Carolina)
Do you think there's any shot we see Huerta vs Alvarez in the future? I think it'd be a dream match
Jon Anik (2:37 PM)
Absolutely. Huerta is a free agent, and you've got to think Bellator would pull out all the stops to sign him. Not only great name recognition, but an elite lightweight who you can really build around.
knuckleup101 (N. CA)
RE: Miller/Davis. Yes they got paid the win bonus but lost out on all the sposorship dough.........
Jon Anik (2:39 PM)
Alright ladies. Gotta bounce. Thanks for making my week, as usual. If I didn't get to you here, hit me up on Twitter (Jon_Anik) or at mmalive@espn.com. Pat Miletich in studio for MMA Live tomorrow. We break down Fedor-Rogers and the rest of the Strikeforce show, and also preview UFC 105 and WEC 44. So...until next week, you know what to do. Be well and be safe. -JA
