Chris Martin (Maryland)
The Giants defense seemed much better this week. It is still very obvious that C.C Brown or Aaron Rousce cant be trusted to make a play. I wouldnt count them out yet but with 2 weeks to prepare for Atlanta Bill Sheridan better come up with something good, if he doesn't is it time to start looking for a new DC?
Mosley (12:02 PM)
You guys are very prompt today -- and I really appreciate it. I thought Rouse was a definite upgrade over Brown, who barely stepped on the field Sunday. And I think Bill Sheridan could be in trouble if this keeps up. I don't think Coughlin will strip him of defensive play-calling duties during the season but he could be gone after its over.
Homer, (Erie PA)
Rank the following WR corp, Ravens, Cowboys, Giants, Steelers, Bengals.
Mosley (12:03 PM)
1. Steelers2. Cowboys3. Bengals4. Giants5. Ravens
Kelly May (Athens Georgia)
I think the Giants and Ravens are peachy keen! Which team has a better shot at the playoffs and which team is better prepared talenbt wise for the next few years. Love the column!
Mosley (12:04 PM)
Kelly, you're a lot more optimistic than most Giants fans. The Giants are two games back in the division race. Their only hope is the wildcard. I think the Ravens are in a division with two teams that are playing really well right now. So just looking at all the other teams, I think the Giants probably have the best shot at slipping in.
Pete (Jackson Mississippi)
What division is better AFC North or the Beast?
Mosley (12:05 PM)
Right now, you have to go with the AFC North.
Pierre (Scranton, PA)
Gilbride is totally incompetent and too damn conservative. Last drive when they settled for 3 is there any civilized reason why you don't let your $100 million throw the ball. Right after the fumble a play action pass to the backup TE guarantees a TD 97% of the time. IS he gone after this year?
Mosley (12:06 PM)
Not sure if he's gone, but there's no defending the lack of aggression down by the goal line. You can't get tentative when you have a great chance to close a team out. Give me a break. You can get someone open in the end zone. Other teams have plays for that.
Rob (Laredo, TX)
Any chance Jason Campbell is a Redskin next year with a revamped OL to help him out? or is he officially done in DC?
Mosley (12:06 PM)
For his sake, I hope he's done. And I think he truly is.
Rob (Laredo, TX)
Matt, Why dont the Skins take any shots down the field? Is it the OL, QB, playcalling or a combination of all of the above?
Mosley (12:06 PM)
It's the OL. There's no way in the world Campbell has time to allow Moss to make a double move. Moss is sort of a non-factor at this point.
Rob (Laredo, TX)
Why does a guy with so much talent "Laron Landry" play out of control week in an week out? He seems to be regressing.
Brian (Atlanta, GA)
Matt, long time no speak! Hey, I feel the coaches have done a great job this season, of late anyhow, doing what they had to do with personnel, i.e. Austin, Crayton. That said, do you ever see a time where they take the next step and move Choice ahead of MBIII. I know MBIII is getting healthier, but still Choice is just the better back, and I'm not so sure that's not the case when MBIII is fully healthy.
Mosley (12:12 PM)
Sorry bout that. Got kicked off wifi at the house for a moment. You have to leave Marion right where he is. He looked great at the end of the game. No need to mess with anything right now.
Mike (Morgantown)
A lot has been made about the incredible job Jerry Reese has done in the draft and how he has build such a deep and talented roster. But after seeing a great coach in Spagnolo and a playmaking WR in Plaxico leave, it appears the Giants may not be as deep and talented as many analysts previously stated. With that said, has Reese been getting too much credit for his work as GM--not to say he's been bad but maybe he's been over-rated?
Mosley (12:14 PM)
Well, he had a draft that contributed heavily to a Super Bowl two seasons ago. And he brought in Boley and Canty to help this defense. It's not his fault that those players have been banged up for most of the season. I have a hard time blaming a lot of this on him. But yes, his failure to find an adequate backup at safety is hurting this team.
Luis (Dallas)
Mosley, Dallas, always plays great in November, and lets say they do win through November, will it still be good enough to get them to the playoffs, or better yet is this team for real or will fall apart in December when it counts?
Mosley (12:15 PM)
Luis, I'll just say that this locker room has a lot different feel to it. I'm not ready to say they'll sweep December. But Tony Romo's making a lot better decisions and Keith Brooking has brought a different mentality to the locker room. He's been a huge difference.
Dan (Princeton, NJ)
Hey Matt,What was up with that messed up FG attempt by Tynes?
Mosley (12:15 PM)
That was a strange deal. For whatever reason, Feagles couldn't get the ball down. Looked like everyone was confused on that one, including Coughlin.
Kevin (Washington, DC)
Matt, As a fellow Baylor alumni, what will come first: Cowboys in the Super Bowl or Baylor in any bowl?
Mosley (12:16 PM)
Definitely the Bears in a bowl. Without a doubt. Strong win over Mizzou!
MJ Gill (Boston)
Matt - you hit the nail on the head with Corey Webster's stock falling. Personally I think he was a beneficiary of a great pass rush. To me, Terrell Thomas has been just as good. Webster is pretty good, but not elite.
Mosley (12:16 PM)
thanks for reading the stock watch, sir. I think Webster's been pretty pedestrian lately. And the Giants need him to be great.
Bernie Kosar (Cleveland (via the U))
My boy, Bruce Johnson, is the best player on the Giant's D right now. When Phillips gets healthy and you have to DBs from the U on the field, that D will look fantastic all over again.
Mosley (12:18 PM)
Bernie, thanks for stopping by the chat. I really like Bruce Johnson. He's not the best player on the defense, but he's going to contribute for a long time. He made a really, really nice play late in that game. I'm trying to remember the circumstances. I like him. I would've had him out there playing safety instead of Brown.
Will (Harrisonburg, VA)
Now that the Cowboys are 6-2, what do you see their overall record being after december?
Mosley (12:19 PM)
This team owns November. I think 11-5 is a real possibility for the Cowboys.
Chris Martin (Maryland)
Where does washington go for a QB next year? The draft? Does snyder make a trade for Farve? or does he show us the height of his stupidity and pay vick 100 million dollars?
Mosley (12:20 PM)
No one's paying Vick $100 million. I think the Skins will see who's out there in free agency and go from there. But yes, the draft is a likely place for them to start. Someone needs to go in there and start stripping everything down.
Chris Martin (Maryland)
The giants are playing terrible right now but their coaching staff has to be happy with the way Nicks is playing. If they are making any noise towards the end of the season I think he will become more and more involved, dont you?
Mosley (12:21 PM)
yes, I'd have him in there all the time. He's dangerous on that little slip screen play. He reminds me of Boldin a lot -- but he's faster than him.
Luis (Santa Barbara, CA)
MattMo, Have you ever seen Dallas play better, in the 3 phases of the game, than on Sunday? DeCamilles for Special Teams, Garret for the O, and Wade for the D all should get major kudos.
Mosley (12:22 PM)
Luis, I've seen the offense play better. But it was a huge performance by the defense in a big spot. And special kudos to the great Australian punter Mat McBriar, who bounced back from an early shank to have an excellent game. DeSean Jackson was a non-factor in the return game mostly because of McBriar.
MJ Gill (Boston)
If Jay Ratliff isn't an all pro, the voters lose all credibility
Mosley (12:22 PM)
Agreed.
Scott (DC)
What do you think the chances are that Snyder actually pulls the trigger and gets rid of Cerrato??
Mosley (12:24 PM)
I think it's closer to happening than at any point since Schotttenheimer sent him packing. But we'll see. I think Snyder and Cerrato have a relationship that ebbs and flows. Right now, I sense that Snyder's pretty frustrated with Cerrato. But neither of those guys has told me that. I'll keep you posted. But let's say this: Cerrato's best chance of hanging around is to help Snyder hire Shanahan. Cerrato and Shanahan are tight from their 49ers days.
Anthony (California)
Vick in D.C.??? Could he be more productive than Campbell??
Mosley (12:25 PM)
You don't start the rebuilding process with Michael Vick, but I wouldn't put it past Snyder.
pull the goalie (Dallas, TX)
Do you think 2 or 3 NFC East teams make the playoffs this year?
Mosley (12:26 PM)
I think the Eagles and Cowboys for sure. Having my doubts about the Giants right now -- along with their entire fan base.
Matt (Houston)
UT alumni, Cowboyfan looking for some love for a fellow alum. Orakpo is playing great what are the chances he gets consideration for rookie of the year?
Mosley (12:27 PM)
I like Orakpo, but I don't think he'll get that award. What's the rookie LB from Atlanta's name? I've been really impressed with his work lately.
Yatin (LA)
Can the Chargers run on the Eagles? I'm hoping we can basically play in nickel all game and send safety help to cover the beast that is Vincent Jackson
Mosley (12:28 PM)
Well, they didn't run on the Giants. I think the Eagles will shut the running game down and force Rivers to beat them. And he's certainly capable of doing that. You have to watch Sproles every time he's in the game. He's like a souped up Westbrook right now. If he gets the ball in the middle of the field, watch out.
Jim (North Jersey)
Why is Sheridan dropping Tuck and Osi into coverage so often? I know they're athletic but no d-lineman can cover Gates.
Mosley (12:29 PM)
You know, I'm with you on this one, Jim. That's exactly what the Chargers wanted to see happening. I don't know why Sheridan would have coverage schemes requiring them to spend that much time in coverage. Sort of strange.
Brian (Arlington)
Do you think Portis is washed up and done for in DC or does he have another year or two in him with a decent OLine? And if he is done, then who replaces him, because Betts is not the answer.
Mosley (12:30 PM)
I need to study the free agents. I think it's probably a situation where you need to find someone in the draft. But yes, I think Portis could still be effective behind a decent line. This is the worst offensive line in football right now. Seriously.
K (philly)
Am I the only Birds fan willing to show myself after that debacle? Andy reid keeps kicking the fg in that situation about 3 min left 1 or no timeouts to watch his team give up a game winning 1st down. Why doesnt he learn from previous experience?
Mosley (12:31 PM)
The writers in Philly are letting Andy off the hook on this one. And yes, you can defend the decision. But I wouldn't let the Cowboys have the ball back when I didn't have any timeouts. You've got the two-minute warning but that's about it. It took the Cowboys two first downs to end the game. You're looking at a fourth-and-11 play. I've seen McNabb convert that a time or two.
Corinn (Burlington, VT)
Matt, do you think that the GB game could be a bit of a "trap"; going to a losing team after such a big win?
Mosley (12:32 PM)
Nope. Seattle was the definition of a trap game because you were coming off a big win over the Falcons and were thinking about the Eagles coming up. The Cowboys have a lot of respect for a desperate Packers team. So no, I wouldn't call it a trap game.
Rob (Lacey, NJ)
What are the chances you answer any of my questions?
Mosley (12:33 PM)
hate to see you blow it like that, Rob.
Anthony (California)
Does D.C. really go out and get LJ? i fear his acquisition would cause the skins to implode further. If at all possible.
Mosley (12:34 PM)
I was told by a high-level league source last night that the Redskins were not interested.
Justin (ST Paul)
How do you think the Eagles will try to contain VJax this Sunday? No team has seemed to have an answer for him.
Mosley (12:36 PM)
I'm sure they will roll some coverage his way. With Asante Samuel and Sheldon Brown, I think the Eagles have as good a chance as anyone. I'd be more concerned about Gates. The Eagles have struggled against tight ends.
Joe (Camarillo, CA)
What do you think about Peter King picking NT Aubrayo Franklin for his mid-season all-pro article...how could he ignore Jay Ratliff?
Mosley (12:37 PM)
I think Peter likes to go underneath the radar a little bit with some guys...And I think he made that decision before Ratliff had the two sacks against the Eagles and pretty much dominated the line of scrimmage. If he had a do-over, I think Peter might give Ratliff the nod. But he hasn't told me that.
Chip (Oklahoma)
Matt if, and when the Dallas Cowboys make the playoffs, how far do you see them going?
Mosley (12:38 PM)
I think this is the year they finally win a playoff game. There, I said it!
Dominic (California)
Matt, love all of the daily column's with non stop BEAST coverage. how would you rank the defenses in the division? I would have to say right now the cowboys have the best d, mainly because of the way jenkins has been playing recently. if dallas can have newman and jenkins play like they have the last few weeks , it only makes that allready great pass rush even better.
Mosley (12:40 PM)
Thanks, Dominic! Here's the way I'd go at this very minute:1. Cowboys 2. Eagles3. Giants4. RedskinsI almost put the Skins in third, but that felt like a cheap shot at Coughlin and Sheridan.
Kyle (College Station, TX)
Does Felix Jones have Reggie Bush syndrome? He's a big play maker when he's healthy but has a track record of injuries....is it too early to tell?
Mosley (12:40 PM)
I think it's fair to say that he's a fragile player at this point in his NFL career. But he can overcome that by staying on the field for the rest of the season.
Chris (Cali)
I thought Kevin Ogletree had a big game for the Boys. Had two huge third conversions. The Cowboys seemed to have more WRS on the field. What's going on with Bennett? I think he could be a player, but Romo doesn't seem to trust him, Cowboys are now 0 for 2 on the double TE set.
Mosley (12:41 PM)
Ogletree's quietly becoming a playmaker for this team. You can't have enough speed on a team. That's something he brings -- more than Roy Williams and Patrick Crayton.
MJ Gill (Boston)
I'll take Jenkins and NEwman over Asante and Brown
Mosley (12:42 PM)
I'm not ready to make that statement, but they were the best CBs on the field this past Sunday.
Anthony (California)
The nfc stout and the nfc beast. which division is stronger???
Mosley (12:42 PM)
Definitely the Beast
CDZ (Dallas)
How can Crayton be sucked down by a linebacker and expect to be a starting WR? Can we see more Ogletree please?
Mosley (12:42 PM)
You're about to get your wish, sir.
Jon Case (New Jersey)
Hey Matt, with arron ross out for this whole season so far, and with the safeties of the giants clearly struggling withought the speed of kenny phillips back there, why didnt jerry reese go out and sign a veteran that is out there at least until arron ross is able to play? Case in point, denver went out and brought in ty law and i thought he played pretty well last night. Im sure theres plenty of veterans out there that could of helped us out until ross came back. Also, do you think their missing Gibril Wilson and James Butler right now, both the giants let go in free agency?
Mosley (12:44 PM)
You weren't going to spend that much money on Wilson. And the same thing goes for Butler. They were going to get a lot more money than the Giants were willing to pay. Let's not forget that many of us thought Kenny Phillips was about to become a Pro Bowl player. It's not like a lot of teams have elite safeties sitting on the bench. And I don't know of any corners that could come in and help this team. Safety is the main issue. I like Bruce Johnson at corner.
Patrick (NYCq)
How could you say that the Giants' "only hope" is for the Wildcard? If we sweep Philly and Dallas AT HOME then we are in first place and win any divisional tiebreaker.
Mosley (12:45 PM)
They've lost four games in a row and are two games back in the division race. Who cares about home tiebreakers at this point. If they get hot at some point, we'll discuss that.
Adam (Harrisonburg, VA)
Watching barber run in the forth on sunday reminded me of what he used to do when julius jones was the starter, i'd like to see choice step into that roll getting more caries in the first half, with barber being the closer, what do you think?
Mosley (12:46 PM)
What do you do with your former first-rounder Felix Jones. You didn't even mention him. Did I miss something? Did the Cowboys lose? When you're going like this, you don't start fixing things that don't require fixing.
Ryan. G (St. Augustine FL)
Hey Matt love the blog. Do you think the return of Ross will help the play of the Giants Defense. Do you think they will move the corners around to help the safeties? How would you rate the receivers play so far. I think Nicks will be the no.1 receiver and Smith will be no.2 in a year or so. Is there any hope of the playoffs? And whats happening to the o-line? 5 sacks on Manning?
Mosley (12:48 PM)
Yes, there need to be some shakeups. I'd put Nicks in the starting lineup. And Ross could help out in a huge way. He'll be rusty of course. But he'll allow the Giants to be more diverse in their nickel and subpackages.
Jason (Calgary, Ab)
How bad of shape is the Eagles LB situation. By my count they?ll have had at least 7 different starting threesomes (including preseason) between Bradley, Gocong, Jordan, Trotter, Mays, Gaither, Witherspoon, and Foiku, (plus whoever starts for Jordan this week - maybe Tracy White).
Mosley (12:49 PM)
It's not a great situation. I think Fokou's a talented guy but he made some really poor decisions in that loss to the Cowboys. And he kept getting stoned by Witten when the Eagles desperately needed a stop.
Joe Garcia (Fresno, CA)
Matt, read your blogs good stuff. I believe Cowboys make it to the playoffs that said, I don't know why they wouldn't but if they don't win a playoff game I still would want to see Wade be our DC. I know its highly unlikely but is it still possible?
Mosley (12:49 PM)
That's not happening.
Zane (MD)
who is to blame for the giants crumble? Tom's Coaching or the teams playing
Mosley (12:51 PM)
You can spread it around. The players aren't executing. And Sheridan's really struggling -- especially on that last drive. But let's admit that the Giants played pretty well Sunday. Norv Turner and Co. just grabbed that win from them. Sometimes you have to tip your hats to an opposing team and move on. But in previous weeks, the Giants were pretty much awful.
Jim (North Jersey)
Who do you see as the top contenders for wild card spots against the Giants and Eagles?
Mosley (12:53 PM)
Listen, let's not bury the Eagles in the division race. But I think the Packers are capable of playing their way back into contention and the Falcons will hang in there the whole season. I love watching Mike Smith coach. I think his players will do just about anything for him. But the Giants will be right in the mix. Everyone should thank the NFC West for being so pathetic.
Ramiro (Nicaragua)
What will the Cowboys do with TE M. Bennet??? They arent using the 2 TE sets to pass... Will he be traded after the season????
Mosley (12:54 PM)
Well, Jerry's already turned down a premium pick for his services -- according to Jerry. OK, I have to end the chat a couple minutes early to work on an assignment. You guys have been wonderful -- as always.
Chang (HongKong)
I love your blog and respect your answer please answer me, your biggest fan from China!!Does Tampa ride teh emotions and go for win number 2 in miami i see a trap?
Mosley (12:55 PM)
Chang, only for you man! The Dolphins are an angry bunch right now. When my man Sparano's angry, you don't want to face him. Dolphins in a laugher. Let's talk soon. Thanks to everyone who's been a part of this.
