JASON WITTEN (COWBOYS STADIUM)
Is it me or does the offense seem to take off when im involved thru-out the whole game, I mean I block great, but when im a prime player in the game with atleast 6 or 7 catches we win.
Mosley (12:01 PM)
Good to hear from you, Jason. I do think that Miles Austin has bigger days when teams become so concerned about Witten. And I have no clue why the Raiders would try to cover Witten with LBs. Makes no sense to me.
Matt, love the blog, read it at least twice daily... with the giants clearly falling off a cliff, do you think this is a team that could be rebuilt with one or two pieces (LB especially), or are there too many older guys who can't perform to their contracts anymore, and Reese might be better off blowing the whole thing up and starting again? The DL, LB, and OL are looking long in the tooth this year.
Mosley (12:03 PM)
I don't think you need to "blow anything up," but the OL needs to be re-tooled. Snee's a tremendous player. But some of these guys (Seubert, McKenzie) could use some work. I think you'll see at least one change along the OL. And is Rocky Bernard on this team? That's an FA deal that hasn't really panned out.
Seth Newell (Big Spring, TX)
Do you see any circumstance where Phillips remains as head coach and we find a new OC. I like what Phillips had done with the D and dont wanna see him go. Your thoughts on this?
Mosley (12:04 PM)
If the Cowboys win a playoff game, I think there's a chance that both of those guys return.
Hey Matt! Felix DID get a little more involved Thanksgiving. I hope JG continues to find ways to get him the ball (Screen?) if the Cowboys beat the Giants Sunday are we going to have to hear that it was because Eli is hurt?
Mosley (12:06 PM)
Hey Eli's not using that excuse so neither will I. You know I'm a huge supporter of his, but I don't think this free-fall is all about his foot injury, no. For some reason, Felix doesn't look comfortable in the passing game right now. But Garrett needs to keep feeding him the ball.
John Homer-Williams (Greensboro, NC)
With the way the Skins are playing determined football in recent games, it is showing the character of the team in not giving up. Obviously there will be many changes for this organization next season, do you see the Redskins playing well for whomever inherits this team?
Mosley (12:08 PM)
There's no consolation bracket for the play-hard teams. I admire the Redskins for not completely giving up, but let's not overdo it here. No matter who the new coach is, there needs to be a culture change at Redskins Park. Can that happen when Dan Snyder's the leader? I'm not sure it can.
Don't you think this "Cowboys suck in December" thing is a little overblown? I mean, they obviously choked last year but when they went 13-3, they just rested their starters against the Redskins, TO was injured for the playoffs, and the Giants were the better team.
Mosley (12:11 PM)
Jared, since Jimmy Johnson left, the Cowboys are 29-46 in the final month of the season and playoff games. It's hard to get past that pathetic play late in seasons. I'll agree that the end of '07 was skewed because they didn't try to beat the Skins, but then they went belly-up against the Giants. I'm not sure the December thing is overblown. It's not going away until the Cowboys actually perform well in that month. I think 3-2 down the stretch would equal success.
If Wade leads the Cowboys to the NFC Title game and still gets let go after the season, will Jerry Jones be praised or trashed by the media.
Mosley (12:12 PM)
Wade will be back if that happens, so it's a moot point.
Shane (Potomac Falls, VA)
Why has Kevin Curtis (PHI) not either been put on IR or released? Seems like this knee is not getting any better but we keep hoping.
Mosley (12:14 PM)
He's a veteran receiver -- and Reid thinks he might need him. If Reid truly needed to fill Curtis' roster spot, he would've already done so. For now, he's getting by without doing it. Curtis could help this team in the playoffs. And that's why he's still on the roster.
How many Cowboys deserve go to the Pro Bowl?
Mosley (12:15 PM)
Haven't given it much thought, Larry. From the offense, I think Miles Austin and Jason Witten should both go. On defense, Ratliff, Ware, Brooking, James and Jenkins should all be candidates.
With an uncapped season approaching...What are the chances the Cowboys get rid of Ken Hamlin and move on. The man has yet to earn a paycheck since signing his new contract, is continual out of position biting on every pump fake shown and his tackling, well, speaks for itself.
Mosley (12:16 PM)
Hamlin's not been good at all. I'm with you. I think they may cut their losses with him and move on down the road with a young guy like Al Ball.
I'm sure you watched the saints thrashing of the patriots last night...after watching the game you cant possibly believe any team in the beast (cowboys, eagles, giants) stand a chance against either the vikings or saints in their domes come playoff time, do you??
Mosley (12:18 PM)
We'll get to see the Cowboys in the Superdome in a couple of weeks. The only way you can beat Brees (in my mind) is to limit his opportunities. I think Jason Garrett might try to slow down the game with the run. And I think the Cowboys have a better defense than the Patriots and Giants right now. I'm not saying the Cowboys will win that game, but it could be interesting. The Saints have struggled at times this season. See the Rams game.
With the emergence of both LeSean McCoy and Winston Justice at their respective positions, what are the chances the Eagles do not bring back Brian Westbrook and Shawn Andrews?
Mosley (12:18 PM)
Chances are pretty good. Especially with Shawn Andrews. Cut this guy and move on down the road. Can't trust him.
Hey Matt, huge fan of the BEAST, and the Giants. Main question - do you feel that Eli's poor playing on Thursday was a result of poor route running/separation issues by the very inexperienced recievers (minus S. Smith, who's getting double-teamed) or his foot issues? Secondary question - do you think Gilbride is partially to blame for his lackluster play-calling (as he has done his whole tenure on the G's)?
Mosley (12:20 PM)
He didn't enough time in the pocket, but mainly it was a case of him just playing poorly. I didn't find myself fixating on "separation issues" from the receivers. The guy had a bad game. And Gilbride was right there with him.
Miles Austin (Dallas)
What kind of raise should I expect this offseason??
Mosley (12:20 PM)
Austin will end up with a five-year extension at some point. Jerry will take care of him.
Bill (New Jersey)
Any reason why Will Witherspoon is currently playing the "Will" linebacking position for the Eagles? He's kind of their best linebacker at the moment, and Jeremiah Trotter isn't getting any younger at Mike (nor Joe Mays any better). Is it in the name?
Mosley (12:22 PM)
I think Witherspoon feels more comfortable on that side, and the team communicates better when he's over there. Trotter's looked better to me the last couple weeks. And Mays is going to make some mistakes because he young. But I liked what Tracy White was doing out there.
If Doug Free does well at RT through the balance of the season - any chance Columbo moves to LT next season in place of Adams?
Mosley (12:23 PM)
Colombo's staying at right tackle. No way he moves to LT. Not athletic enough at this point in his career to play that position. Free would be a better candidate at LT than Colombo.
Rob (Laredo, TX)
Matt,Why has Carlos Rogers continued to disappoint us Redskin fans by getting burned week in an week out? Is it his confidence or is he just an average CB?
Mosley (12:25 PM)
I think he has the tools, but he's just never really displayed the confidence you need to play at an elite level. On the Maclin catch, he actually had pretty good coverage. Maclin was deceptive in waiting until the last second to put his hands up -- and McNabb put it in the perfect spot. I don't have a huge problem with rogers on that specific play.
mike g (philly)
can celek and desean jackson make the probowl this yr for the first time or is they going to get snub because of popularity
Mosley (12:27 PM)
Jackson gets in there for sure, but Celek's iffy because of the Witten-Gonzalez factor. I certainly think Celek's worthy of getting in. And by the way, I need to call in some Celek news.
mike g (atl)
How can the eagles stop the falcons and love what u write keep it up
Mosley (12:33 PM)
Sorry for the delay. I just tracked down the figures on Celek's contract. I'll give them to you as soon as they're inserted into our news story.
If the Giants need the last game of the year in Minnesota and Minnesota still needs it for home field advantage, how do the Giants go into the dome and beat them?
Mosley (12:34 PM)
I have a sneaking suspicion that the Vikings won't need that game.
Which is the bigger potential loss of Sunday: Jackson for the iggles or Ryan for the Falcons? Who wins if they are both out?
Mosley (12:34 PM)
Ryan -- for sure!
who's the best WR in NFC East--Austin, Jackson, NYG Smith, or someone else?
Mosley (12:35 PM)
MM, why does Tom Coughlin seemingly escape criticism in the mainstream media? He's as big of a culprit as anyone for the Giants' season. Awful job picking Sheridan as DC, not playing the young guys enough (Nicks, Sintim) or at all (Goff, Kehl), and ZERO in game adjustments. Oh, and career record as NYG head coach without Spags - 31-30, which screams mediocrity. I'd have no problem if Reese threw him out along with the rest of this clueless coaching staff and hired his own guy.
Mosley (12:36 PM)
Coughlin's accomplished too much to simply throw him out after one subpar season. But he certainly deserves his fair share of criticism. And it's starting to appear in the New York tabloids.
Christian (Staten Island, NY)
Matt, does Sheldon Brown finally make it to the Pro Bowl this year? Remember in 2004, he was the only member of the Eagles' secondary to not get an invite.
Mosley (12:37 PM)
I'm afraid not.
Marquis (Rock Island)
How would you rate the 3 free agent pick-ups by the Cowboys at this point in the season, they were all bargain signs who are looking like steals.
Mosley (12:38 PM)
Brooking's been phenomenal. Deserves to go to the Pro Bowl. Olshansky and Sensabaugh have both been solid. Sensabaugh's actually better than Hamlin at this point.
How do you feel about Vince Youngs progress? I believe he is our future. Do you agree?
Mosley (12:39 PM)
It's one of the most remarkable stories of the season. It's like he had to go through the same growing-up process he went through before winning big at UT. Playing with a lot of poise right now. Just an amazing story.
Al (Wausau, WI)
Matt, if the Giants miss the playoffs, might Tom Coughlin be on the hot seat?
Mosley (12:39 PM)
Do you trust the play calling from Red Jesus? And is he the next Cowboys coach?
Mosley (12:41 PM)
Depends on what game it is. He's put together some pretty good game plans at times this season. And I don't see any scenario where he's the next head coach.
Matt, can a vegas vacation with a teammate really throw off a balance? theres no where they can go without being seen. just some good bonding, correct me if i'm wrong there
Mosley (12:42 PM)
As I said on the radio in Dallas on Monday, I don't have a big problem with it. Any other player in the league could've gone to Vegas and not caused a ripple. But the Cabo trip still haunts Romo in the minds of a lot of Cowboys fans. It's a perception thing. Probably wasn't wise on Romo's part, but he doesn't care about perception. If they win Sunday, no one will care.
Jason (Washington DC)
Celek: 54 Catches, 601 Yards, 5 TDs, 11.1 AvgWitten: 59 Catches, 588 Yards, 1 TD, 10.0 AvgGonzalez: 61 Catches, 666 Yards, 5 TDs, 10.9 Avg.Close battle but I think Celek edges out Witten with his TD output and his higher yardage avg. Of course, Witten will get in instead because of name recognition. Thoughts?
Mosley (12:45 PM)
I agree. Celek's put himself in the conversation, but he might have to wait a year. Celek receives a six-year, $33 million deal with $11 mil guaranteed by the way. Here's the updated link: http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/news/story?id=4703149
Manuel (Corpus Christi)
I love all the Cowboys questions!!! Who are your NFC Wide Receiver Pro bowlers....
Mosley (12:47 PM)
I think I'd just start everyone from the Saints. Actually, I'd put DeSean Jackson, Sid Rice and Colston out there for sure. And of course Larry Fitzgerald. And Steve Smith of the Giants and Miles Austin should at least be in the discussion.
I read that Eli said that his foot injury is not going to be a factor in his playing. Is this true?
Mosley (12:52 PM)
Chris, I think it might be affecting him but he's not going to use it as an excuse. And when a player's out there performing, we have to judge them on their performance. Manning played poorly against the Broncos. He said his foot had nothing to do with it, so I'm taking him at his word on that. And that's why he deserves criticism -- just like a lot of people on the team.
frankcal20 (Los Angeles)
Does London Fletcher finally get the nod for a probowl or will he be overlooked once again by everyone but Washington Redskins fans?
Mosley (12:52 PM)
He HAS to be in the Pro Bowl this season. It's ridiculous if he's not. Not even that embarrassing campaign by the Skins could get the job done last season.
how do you put jackson in over austin ? he has more yards and td catches and did you forget abot donald driver
Mosley (12:54 PM)
I look at more than just the receiving stats. Jackson's one of the most dangerous punt returners in the league. I think both players deserve to go, though.
Why is it Dallas continues to overpay to resign their solid, but hardly spectacular players like Flozell, Barber, and Roy Williams when they have equally if not more talented players to replace them -- Free, Choice and Felix, and Austin.
Mosley (12:55 PM)
I'm not convinced that Choice is equal with Barber. And I don't think you want to find out what Free would do in replacing Adams. I'm been highly critical of Adams, but he's still a pretty decent LT in this league.
Could it also be mentioned when comparing Celek's to Witten's numbers that Witten is probably the best blocking tight end in the league?
Mosley (12:55 PM)
I'm not sure he's the best, but he does an excellent job in that part of the game. Celek's getting better as a blocker.
Marquis (Rock Island)
With the Cowboys upcoming 5 game stretch what do you see their records as after Jan 3.
Mosley (12:56 PM)
I think 11-5 sounds about right.
Eric (Southington CT)
What's the deal with Akeem Jordan? I think the Eagles are going to need him to make a serious run
Mosley (12:58 PM)
Eric, you're right up there next to the mothership! He's got a hyperextended knee and it's preventing him from using his speed and quickness. It's just not progressing as quickly as the Eagles had hoped. He'll be back at some point, but it might be another week or so.
Mose! love the blog! With the recent relase of Charlie Weis, is there any chance any Beast team looks into signing him to beef up their offense?
Mosley (1:00 PM)
Mason, that's an ender!! I think Weis might end up with Pioli and Haley in KC. Thanks to everyone who's been a part of this chat. You guys were excellent -- as always. By the way, we'll take down the Red Raiders next season. You heard it here first.
