AJ Mass (10:56 AM)
Morning to one and all. Steelers-Browns on tap tonight and fantasy playoffs for many leagues get underway. No better time of the year - so who's up first?
Mike Wallace is one of my lineup WRs. Is this a good play? Will the weather make for a bad passing game?
AJ Mass (10:58 AM)
A lot of fear over the weather today. I generally don't worry about it in the grand scheme of things - after all, for every 3-0 game, there's a Tom Brady 300-yarder. But when it's snowing and windy DURING the game, it's an issue. I'd avoid receivers tonight.
AJ - Playoffs? You talking PLAYOFFS? Yes, and your run begins this week but you need to make sure the correct QB is selected for your line up. Who ya got - Vince at home against the Rams or Carson at the Vikings?THanks
AJ Mass (10:59 AM)
VY. Carson is one of the few guys I would bench for him. At best Carson's a 200 yard guy and Young has that ability to score with his legs.
Concerns about Ray Rice going forward with the re-emergence of Mcgahee at the goal line?
AJ Mass (11:00 AM)
Not really. He's got the receptions on his side, and although McGahee is getting goal-line carries, at some point rushing for negative yards in as few carries as he gets will get him the boot from that role.
Rock is currently listed better than Forte in rankings, so should one conclude that Ganther takes over Rock's rank just as he took over the starting spot in WAS? Start him over Forte or McCoy?
AJ Mass (11:01 AM)
Haven't seen the rankings, but certainly Ganther is around as good as Cartwright would have been. I would start him over Forte. Might lean to McCoy though.
AJ, I'm assuming Ward will not play tonight. Who do you like to replace him? Best options are Autin Collie or Josh Morgan. Deep league. Hlep!
AJ Mass (11:02 AM)
I'd go with Collie. He's heavy in the Peyton rotation, and it's not like the Colts are going to have weather concerns.
Ryan (Bradley Beach, NJ)
Davone Bess worth a start at WR3 in a PPR league? Also have Housh and Kevin Walter to consider. Thanks!
AJ Mass (11:03 AM)
I think so. Miami seems to have ditched the gimmickry with Ronnie gone, and Henne has resembled a legit NFL QB lately.
Tommy Two Tone (WI)
Who is the better play this week......Maroney or Ganther???
AJ Mass (11:04 AM)
Maroney for this week only. Going forward though, with Morris back and Taylor soon to be as well, I'm not as confident.
Jake (San Diego)
If turner doesn't play again, who's the better play out of snelling or norwood?
AJ Mass (11:05 AM)
I think Turner will play again, but perhaps not this week. I think Norwood is the far better play, assuming he too is injury-free.
Who would you play, Ganther or Bradshaw? Devin Thomas or Steve Breaston for Week 14?
AJ Mass (11:07 AM)
Ganther. It's all about touches. Q to get around 20, Bradshaw - maybe 10. As for WR, I'd go Breaston - as I'm not a fan of a double-dip plus Oakland is far better versus the pass.
John W. (Greenwood,In)
Should play Mendenhall or McCoy?
AJ Mass (11:08 AM)
Go with Rashard. If the weather is worst-case,the teams run the ball 50 times tonight. If the weather is "manageable" the RBs still have a huge edge on defenders on a slick field. As long as he doesn't turn an ankle, he's the better play.
Doug (Crystal Lake)
Does the bad weather help or hurt Harrison's performance this evening?
AJ Mass (11:10 AM)
Plenty of Q's about the weather tonight. This is far from the first time there's been snow, gang. If it's just sitting on the ground, there's no issue. If there's snow during, it can only help the running backs, assuming they don't fumble due to the slippery ball.
Although unlikely, if the Saints lose in the next week or two will they bench their fantasy stars? i.e Brees, Colston etc.
AJ Mass (11:11 AM)
Brees plays all the snaps, except for perhaps a few late-game drives. I wouldn't be too concerned here- especially if the Vikes keep winning and home field is still alive.
Andrew (Kingston (ON))
AJ, my QB situation is looking pretty miserable going into the playoffs. I have Matt Ryan and Vince Young on my roster. Should I try to wait out Ryan's injury or drop him and pick up somone like Quinn, Fitzpatrick, Freeman, or Gradkowski?
AJ Mass (11:12 AM)
I'm not holding out too much hope for Ryan's return. Fitzpatrick has terrific matchups going forward, and Quinn has actually looked good - though this week, I don't like him.
Who to start, Greg Jennings or Kenny Britt?
AJ Mass (11:13 AM)
Britt and VY have a nice chemistry going, but I'm still more confident in Aaron Rodgers.
The past 2 weeks, I had both OchoCinco and Harvin switching on and off in my starting line-up! Ofcourse they both had better numbers on my bench! Which WR would you start this week?
AJ Mass (11:14 AM)
Harvin at home.
Pick 2 PPR League..J.Charles, J.Stewart, J.Forsett or Fred Jackson.
AJ Mass (11:14 AM)
Jamaal and Fred.
Jonny W. (Maryland)
LaDanian Tomlinson, Pierre Thomas, or Quinton Ganther this week?
AJ Mass (11:15 AM)
If you have Tomlinson, you have to start him. I know he's burned fantasy owners this time of year before, but goshdarnit... I stick with him.
Marcus (Germantown, MD)
Playoff mentality: Do you go for "upside" or consistency in the playoffs, for example, Warner can be HUGE or toss 5 picks Monday, but Big Ben will have 175 and 2 tonight.
AJ Mass (11:17 AM)
I think you have to think about the team you are playing a bit - if you're a 6-7 team playing an 11-2, you go for upside in instances you're debating. If you're 11-2, you go for the sure points.
A team in the playoffs is trading Favre and Sproles to a team out of the playoffs for Mendenhall and S.Holmes. The team out of the playoffs has Shaub and Palmer as QB's already and team in the playoffs still has A.Rodgers. So, i know it's stupid to have the trade deadline so late in the season, but it is what it is, so here we go on this.... Should this trade be vetoed?
AJ Mass (11:19 AM)
No. Look, if you allow trades this late, you have to allow them. Do I like the deal? No. But I'm not about to police them if my league hasn't figured out that deals this late are a bad idea.
Cale (Notes for next year)
Don't get me wrong, I love having good receivers. But I will never again use more than 2 of my top 6 picks on WR's. There are so many of them who emerge throughout the year. Good luck on getting one of the 3 total RB's who emerge. Just a change of philosophy for me.
AJ Mass (11:19 AM)
Duly noted, Cale.
Jon Roy (Iowa)
This is my last week of regular season, I'm stuck between Mendenhall or T. Jones. Am I crazy for leaning toward Mendenhall?
AJ Mass (11:20 AM)
Not at all. I might go with Jones simply because the TB matchup plus Clemens starting makes him a better play... but Mendenhall *should* get 100 and a score tonight, and possibly much more if the weather cooperates with him.
HINES WARD (PITTSBURGH )
Someone just dropped me, i'm i worth picking up for week 15 & 16
AJ Mass (11:21 AM)
Absolutely. I think if this game were on Sunday, Ward would play.
Baseball? What do you make of the Rangers Chris Davis, Smoak, Mike Young, Andrus, Lowell situation for 1st,3rd, and SS?
AJ Mass (11:23 AM)
Hot stove heating up? Too early to make these kinds of calls - plenty of time for more wheeling and dealing. Until these teams get to camp, I don't feel it makes sense to speculate too much. Just as the NYY are not done moving OFs after the Granderson deal.
WR Playoff Predicament! Who would you SIT fo this week: Austin, OchoCinco, Colston, or TO?
AJ Mass (11:24 AM)
Have to sit one, it's Miles. Just a hunch, but I see passing struggles this week in Big D.
Another baseball? Who would you keep: Adam Jones or Pablo Sandoval?
AJ Mass (11:26 AM)
Not trying to dodge the issues... but I do think it's way too early to be naming keepers in MLB. I like "DigDug" better personally... but I'd like to see exactly what the plans are for Kung Fu in 2010 before outright declaring.
From one commish to another -- 12 team league, 3 divisions of 4. Do you prefer to shuffle divisions every year or leave them the same? If you prefer to shuffle - how do you like to do it? Some in my league want to allow the previous years' division winners draft the other teams into their division...while others want to pull names out of a hat. Thanks.
AJ Mass (11:27 AM)
H2H leagues are a factor of luck when it comes to the schedule anyway, so it doesn't matter to me which way you do it, as long as the schedule is 2 games in-division (otherwise, why have them). Personally, I do the snake based on points scored in the previous regular season in my keeper league, but in a start-from-scratch format... don't care.
how big of a hit does megatron take with stafford out?
AJ Mass (11:28 AM)
Not much. If anything, I think it helps a bit b/c Daunte doesn't care about working with his other options - he just wants to get it to Mega.
Dallas Clark (Indy)
Am i usable in week 15 and 16? Should my fantasy owners pickup Finley or the likes as a backup?
AJ Mass (11:30 AM)
I think Clark is usable. Actually, because Sorgi is on the IR, I think the team might be less likely to pull Peyton and company so early in the next few weeks. However, you should always have a Plan B.
Stuart (White Plains)
Thursday games make it tough for playoffs! Need to start a RB: Should I go with Ganther since Harrison be embarrassing tonight or vice versa?
AJ Mass (11:31 AM)
I disagree. Thursday games are still just games. The only problem with them is injury calls. If this one was a Sunday 1pm start, you'd have the same exact call. I go Ganther.
AJ, could you give us some names of not-so-obvious guys you think will be huge during the next couple of weeks... I'm thinking like Ron Dayne or Billy Volek/Drew Bennett, etc. from the past.
AJ Mass (11:34 AM)
Well, that's the thing isn't it? They're surprises because we have no idea... I could see a guy like Arian Foster or Legedu Naanee or Curtis Painter being a bizarre success story... but I'm not rushing out to sign them either.
Santa (North Pole)
I see a lump of coal in your future unless you can deliver me a winner out of these two. Miles Austin or Mike Sims-Walker? Ho ho ho, gotta go.
AJ Mass (11:35 AM)
MSW, but I've been naughty this year.
AJ baseball again! Mark Reynolds(10th) as one of my 2 keepers is a No Brainr, right?
AJ Mass (11:36 AM)
This is kind of like calling in to Fox News and asking if Republicans are right, John.
Why did Miami abandon the wildcat? Can't Ricky run it as well? Does this make Chad Henne more attractive?
AJ Mass (11:37 AM)
No, he can't. One of the many reasons it works with Brown is b/c he's a lefty and rolls the opposite way of Pat White if they are both back there. Henne is definitely more attractive if he's not being pulled for 20-25 snaps a game, but don't get carried away.
Should i start D. Mason over Jacobs?
AJ Mass (11:39 AM)
I wouldn't. Flacco has been so-so and Jacobs is heating up. I realize the Eagles are a tough foe, but I still like his chances.
Bill (New York)
AJ, I'm in a very deep league and planning on starting Sammy Morris, Jamaal Charles, and Jerious Norwood this week. With the weather tonight, is Jennings worth a spot over any of those? Thanks!
AJ Mass (11:40 AM)
No, I think not. Jennings isn't at 100 percent to begin with, and Harrison will get first dibs.
Shockey is ranked high every week, but gives me nothing. Should I ride with Boss this week vs Phily? Thanks.
AJ Mass (11:41 AM)
Not by me, he isn't. Shockey has been sharing the TE position in NO, and Thomas has been getting more and more love from Drew. I'd stick with Boss, even though he's been blocking more than catching himself of late.
Desperate on D... Go with the Giants, MIA, WAS, or TB vs. Clemens.
AJ Mass (11:42 AM)
I go with WAS. If Gradkowski does that again... well I can live with myself for thinking he can't and being wrong.
Dan (S. car)
AJ, where can I read your blogs? ...LDT, Charles, Moreno and Driver - I can only start two of them (1 is a flex) who do you like?
AJ Mass (11:43 AM)
"Mass Confusion" on Blogger. Ask for it by name. I'd start Charles and LDT.
Start Schaub and his bum shoulder vs Seattle OR McNabb and TD poaching Michael Vick vs NYG?
AJ Mass (11:44 AM)
Go with McNabb. Vick's game was a fluke based on the blowout and the location - I doubt he'll get as much opportunity in the Meadowlands.
Bill (New York)
There are some seriously underhanded things going on in my league. Players out of the playoffs are dropping players, knowing their friends are at the top of the waiver wire rankings. One team just dropped Forte and Ricky Williams! Is there anyway that you'd consider this fair?
AJ Mass (11:45 AM)
Of course not. It's why in all my leagues where I have a say, rosters are frozen at the start of the playoffs.
You are high on LDT, a declining talent. Between him or the bust called Forte, who would you choose?
AJ Mass (11:46 AM)
Overall declining, absolutely. But he's been real good the last month or so and Sproles is barely getting carries as a result. Keeper league, Forte. This week and the next two, LDT.
Eric G. (Beantown)
AJ, usually this would be a no brainer, but with forecast of heavy winds, would you consider benching Big Ben in favor of the hot hand of Alex Smith vs. Arz??
AJ Mass (11:47 AM)
Yes, especially b/c I tend to lean towards home QBs on MNF.
Is Massaquoi startable tonight? Can he duplicate Louis Murphy's success against the steelers last week?
AJ Mass (11:48 AM)
If we took the snow out of the equation, I'd say there was a chance, especially with Quinn looking pretty good in recent games. But b/c of the conditions and the fact there really isn't a second option to throw to... nah.
Rick (New York)
My league gives points for return yards...is it safe to start Cribbs tonight, or will the weather have a negative effect on him? Thanks...
AJ Mass (11:50 AM)
It very well could... punts blowing out of bounds, the inability to catch the ball under those conditions, fumbles...
Quick-PPR-Sims-Walker or Garcon?
AJ Mass (11:51 AM)
Garcon. He'll catch more balls, though MSW might have twice as many yards.
Rob Thomas (More up your alley?)
Should I strike a MATCH with Frank Gore this week, or...uh...have Pierre Thomas...um...BOX for me....20 times?
AJ Mass (11:53 AM)
Ugh. I think Gore will be SUPERNATURAL but Thomas will have you up at 3AM worrying about his performance. (I was going to call this a PUSH, but thought better of it.)
Ganther or Julius Jones this week? Both have juicy matchups.
AJ Mass (11:53 AM)
Yes, but one is named Julius Jones.
Are you a high on anyone playing tonight? Sounds like you are really concerned with the weather.
AJ Mass (11:55 AM)
I'm not "concerned" about running backs. And I don't bench a Santonio Holmes for the likes of Sinorice Moss. But if there's a close call, I lean away from the QB/WRs.
Better back-up QB option rest of the year : VY or Garrard ?
AJ Mass (11:56 AM)
Young. As a BACKUP, I'll roll with him.
chris brown or jerome harrisoN?
AJ Mass (11:57 AM)
Daniel (New Orleans)
Would you start Chad Henne over Carson Palmer?
AJ Mass (11:57 AM)
This week, yeah.
need to start 2 of these 3 wr's, V jackson, D jackson, D mason?
AJ Mass (11:57 AM)
No Mason for me.
Should I start Edwards and/or Cotchery this week @TB?
AJ Mass (11:58 AM)
Maybe Cotchery... but with Clemens in there... it's a big ?
AJ Mass (11:59 AM)
That's the time, gang. Pleasure as always. I'll be on ESPN Radio in Pittsburgh tomorrow pm at 3, and you can always find me on Twitter. Until the next time, see you at the Villa Alegre!
