J.A. Adande (3:01 PM)
Greetings everyone. Before we get going I have a question that gets to the essence of our American liberties. A few months ago I received a parking ticket that was issued despite the fact I still had time left on the meter. I'm contesting it...and I just found my court date is scheduled for a day when I am supposed to be out of town. It will probably cost me double the amount of the ticket to change my flight...but I'm still thinking about it just for the principle of fighting a police state where meter maids think they can just issue tickets regardless of the facts. What do you think?
Justin Vick (Concord, N.C.)
Chris Broussard reported Shaq saying LeBron could coach in the NBA right now. Could Cleveland be desperate enough to keep King James by offering him a player/coach role?
J.A. Adande (3:02 PM)
No team can have a player-coach because it would violate the salary cap guidelines.
shady (philly )
to get some bad contracts off the books, is there any way the sixers could trade either andre iguadala, elton brand, or dalambert, rack up some expiring contracts and get lucky in the lottery
J.A. Adande (3:03 PM)
They've wanted to trade Dalembert, but even though so many teams can use big men he hasn't been easy to move because of his big contract. And his is more favorable than the other two, who are on the books through 2013. At least Dalembert enters his final year next season, so maybe he could be moved then.
Jim (Newport Beach)
Where do you see Charlotte headed over the next 3 seasons?
J.A. Adande (3:05 PM)
Hard to imagine them being much better than they are now. For one thing, that would extend Larry Brown's stay to 5 years...he's only stayed in one place that long once in his career (Indy). Also they're currently set up to have cap space in 2011. But there aren't any "franchise player" unrestricted free agents scheduled to come up that summer. Maybe they could add a Jamal Crawford, who's been great in Atlanta...but as a sixth man, not a lead guy.
This is looking more and more like a Pistons team isnt it?With all the injuries theyve had and were talking major, last night against Denver on a back to back, no Rip, Tay, Bynum or Ben Gordon. Stuckey has been great this month and is quietly averaging 19 5 and 4, some love for the Pistons?
J.A. Adande (3:06 PM)
It's looking like a Pistons team because it's starting to look like Pistons defense again. They haven't allowed an opponent to score 100 points yet this month, after it happened 7 times in November.
J.A. Adande (3:06 PM)
DEEE-TROIT BAS-KET-BALL. had to say it.
LA leads the lead in FG% allowed. Who is playing better defense, LA or Boston?
J.A. Adande (3:09 PM)
SportsCenter had a graphic last night comparing the Lakers and Celtics in their current winning streaks and the Laker defensive numbers were better, which stunned me. I've been at all the home games and I've seen so many breakdowns where guys just wind up staring at each other. I saw Dwyane Wade shred them on the pick-and-roll in the second half last Friday. With the Celtics, especially against the Spurs last week, I see a squad that seems to decide when and if it will allow uncontested shots. And I'm more impressed by them grabbing every rebound in the 2nd quarter vs. Wash than I was the Lakers allowing only 2 fgs vs. Utah in the fourth quarter
Taft (SLC, Ut)
The feel here in Utah is not the normal "optimistic, we're underrated, why is no one talking about us" feeling. I think we are all a little lost and don't know what to expect with this season. This is mostly because of the Boozer situation and our huge luxury tax problem that we are about to deal with. What should we expect going forward and will the Miller Group try to keep the D-Will Booz duo together?
J.A. Adande (3:11 PM)
They only kept Boozer because he left them no choice by picking up his player option. But with the money they're paying Millsap I can't see them bringing Boozer back next year, especially with the $ his play this season will command.
Jay (Los Angeles)
Do you think it's time we change how we vote for the All Star game?
J.A. Adande (3:14 PM)
No. As ludicrous as it might seem to have T-Mac in there I say give the fans what they want. Remember when they voted in Magic even though he hadn't played in the 91-92 season? That resulted in one of the most memorable all-star games ever, especially when he finished it off with a three.
J.A. Adande (3:15 PM)
This isn't the MVP, this isn't All-NBA. it's a meaningless showcase. And a deserving player will still make it on the reserve picks
J.A. Adande (3:15 PM)
Plus, maybe T-Mac will do something like this:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Dp8bV1lRZmk
J.A. Adande (3:16 PM)
I'd like to see Shaq and AI voted in, too. They're both showmen who understand what the All-Star game is about. Don't you want to see Shaq do the Jabbawockeez (or however you spell it) dance again?
you can always hire an atty to appeal your ticket. + how do you know you had time left? can you provie it?
J.A. Adande (3:17 PM)
I have a witness who was at dinner with me. But I don't think an attorney will cut it. I need to provide my own testimony
taycot (san antonio, tx)
whats the matter with the san antonio spurs? i still think its too early to call jefferson a bust and despite his lack of numbers how are the spurs losing when tim is having one beast of season so far?
J.A. Adande (3:19 PM)
I've said for the last couple of years that the Spurs no longer go as Duncan goes. We've seen him put up good numbers and it doesn't have the same impact it used to. Ginobili has become their barometer, and he's having the worst FG shooting season of his career
Fight the ticket. You can go out of town anytime. How often do you get to stick it to the establishment?
Hey J.A. What are Bosh's numbers on a team he could be playing for next season... i.e. Miami or Chicago? They seem inflated on this Raptors team.
J.A. Adande (3:20 PM)
I'm sure they'd go down if he were to play alongside a Dwyane Wade, for example. Remember, all of the Celtics' Big 3 numbers went down their first year together, but as a whole they were the best team in the league.
Thomas (Mt Pleasant SC)
Your thoughts on the Hawks chances at a deep title run? Joe Johnson is one of the most underrated players in the Association in my opinion and they are one of the most athletic teams in the league.
J.A. Adande (3:22 PM)
I was just thinking this morning we have to do some Hawk talk in the chat today, as vulnerable as Orlando and Boston looked last night. Right now the Hawks are definitely looking like a bigger threat than the Cavs. It's hard to pick them getting out of the East though, simply because this group hasn't been to the conference finals yet. It usually goes in stages.
Im from LA but your so one sided in your love for kobe its disgusting. Do you really think he's better than Mj?
J.A. Adande (3:24 PM)
I really wish people could read and not project their own thoughts on what I write. Do a google search and find an instance I've ever said Kobe Bryant was better overall than Jordan. What I said was that I'd pick him to take the last shot over MJ, just because Kobe is better at making bad shots. If you're not assured of having enough time to get a clean look, I'd rather have the guy who can hit it under any circumstance.
Dirk Nowitzki (Dallas)
Why am I constantly overlooked as an elite player in the league? The only criticism you can give me is the 2006 Finals where the TEAM let the championship slip away, I was brilliant. (P.S. LeBron got swept in the finals and he's an elite star)
J.A. Adande (3:25 PM)
What set Dirk back was that loss to GS as a 1 seed when he was coming off an MVP season. As Hubie Brown would say: See, you can not have that. Missing the critical free throw that could have finished off Miami didn't help either.
Is there a bigger joke among NBA coaches than Vinny Del Negro? The guy is a whiner who seems to have 0 clue when it comes to an offense. I see better stuff in my pickup games than the Bulls 1 on 1 forays around the perimeter before launching a bad shot. Am I missing something?
J.A. Adande (3:27 PM)
How about some accountability for the players? They always seem too willing to settle for excuses there. Two years ago it was the distractions from the Kobe trade talk. Now it's injuries...or LeBron's dancing too much. Has any group made more excuses than this team?
Jim Crozier (Boise, Idaho)
Been trying to get an answer to this for a while now. What's with the dropoff in Wade's numbers this season? If anything, the team around him has improved since last year. Don't get me wrong, he's definitely playing at All-Star level...but not SUPERSTAR level anymore. Bonus Question: What's your opinion on Lebron's dancing?
J.A. Adande (3:30 PM)
When I watch Dwyane this year he seems disconnected from the rest of the team, as if he got tired of carrying them last year and doesn't feel like doing it again this season. A couple of scouts I've talked to said they see the same thing. He kind of cruised through the first half of the game in LA last week...but he snapped into it in the fourth quarter for a great duel with Kobe.
J.A. Adande (3:30 PM)
And if your team doesn't want LeBron to dance, score more points than the Cavs...or deliver a message-sending elbow
Wesley (Bakersfield )
I have noticed that there a few commentators out there, who feel the Sixers will somehow make the playoffs and be a dark horse, now that they have added Allen Iverson. What do you think?
J.A. Adande (3:31 PM)
I never saw him as the answer to their problem, or that he'll enable them to make up for their bad start. But I think the signing is worthwhile because they've sold more tickets.
MC Welk (SLC)
In France they call meter maids "pampelmousses," or eggplants, because their uniforms are purple. If you can't attest, don't contest.
Alex Z (Orlando)
Pay the ticket, unless you have hard proof (i.e. a video of the entire incident) the judge will just uphold the ticket anyways!
J.A. Adande (3:32 PM)
hmm, there has to be security camera videos from the nearby stores, right? it was a busy street, in the shopping district.
JSlim (Los Angeles)
Who is the best rookie this year? Brandon Jennings has received all the early buzz, but no one is talking about Tyreke Evans (who has very similar stats). Will Blake Griffin end up stealing the ROTY award when it's all said and done?
J.A. Adande (3:34 PM)
I can't see Griffin overcoming the two-month head start for Evans and Jennings. But I can envision Evans overcoming all of the early hype for Jennings if he outplays him the rest of the way. I remember when everyone was ready to give Lamar Odom the ROY during his first month in the league (SI even did a feature on him) and he didn't wind up winning it.
Can you weigh in on this theory? Michael Jordan (legendary player) had a headcase teammate (Dennis Rodman)late in his career; Kobe Bryant (legendary player) has a headcase teammate (Ron Artest) in the later stage of his career; LeBron James (future legendary player) will play with what headcase teammate later in his career? Since Rodman and Artest were relatively close to Jordan and Kobe in age and had very respectable skills, I say Michael Beasley because of the relative age closeness to LeBron and Beasley has pretty good skills. Your thoughts?
J.A. Adande (3:35 PM)
I like that. A big difference though was that Rodman was a calculated oddball. Artest and Beasley aren't as aware of what they're doing.
xavier (charlotte, nc)
hey J.A. heres one for you. if playoffs started today, would shaq's production improve and be enough of a factor for cleveland to come out of the east? or are we seeing exactly what shaq is to the team right now?
J.A. Adande (3:37 PM)
I expect more from Shaq in the post-season. Lighter travel. No back-to-backs. He'll be more motivated. Don't base all of your Cleveland projections on this current Shaq
SteveFitz (Cicero, IL)
You hate Jordan and you hate the Bulls. Just pay the ticket, you deserve it.
J.A. Adande (3:38 PM)
Yes, I hate the guy who gave me some of the best memories of my career covering him in my early days in the biz. If they could issue tickets for silly statements, you'd be the one in court.
Who do you think is the best team in the Eastern conference?
J.A. Adande (3:38 PM)
David (Durham, NC)
J.A., two years ago I outscored John Wall head-to-head in an AAU game. Should I start preparing how to tell my grandchildren about it now? They'll grow up knowing his name right?
J.A. Adande (3:41 PM)
I also saw an e-mail from someone who said they beat John Wall 1-on-1. Do you have any video evidence of this, or did LeBron confiscate it?
Why do you not answer questions about the Bobcats?
J.A. Adande (3:42 PM)
If you were here on time you wouldn't have asked that question. Let this be a lesson to all to be punctual
Hey JA. So what is the deal with the jazz. They play brilliantly some nights, or for 3 quarters. or just flat out horrible other nights (Twolves loss). Is there chemistry issues with the jazz or are they just missing a vocal leader in the locker room?
J.A. Adande (3:44 PM)
I'd let them off the hook after the way they came back against the Magic last night. But for a minute I was going to wonder myself. From the fourth quarter Wednesday in LA to the 7-minute mark of the game last night they'd scored 39 points in 34 minutes of basketball. Then they got it together. I do think they'll miss Harpring's toughness, more than they need a vocal leader
What do you make of the Rashard Lewis "incident " last night when he refused to re-enter the game in the second quarter?
J.A. Adande (3:46 PM)
I don't see why he's getting criticized for it. There have been plenty of stories when a guy has said to let the current unit stay in because they're playing well, and he's praised as a good teammate. Now Rashard's a bad guy because he didn't think he would be the better solution at that moment? I wonder if it's more about Stan Van Gundy insecurity about not having his orders followed
ruben (los angeles)
Now this is getting ridiculous: "Fight the ticket. You can go out of town anytime. How often do you get to stick it to the establishment?" Seriously? There's people out there getting brutalized by cops in this country and you people feel righteous for fighting a ticket?
J.A. Adande (3:48 PM)
It's a slippery slope. If the police feel entitled to write tickets whenever they want, what's to keep them from beating people over the head when they want?
Mark (Westchester NY)
off the top of your head who would you say is the best 2nd round pick of all time?
J.A. Adande (3:49 PM)
Seeing the name "Mark" makes me think Mark Price. But I'd have to go with Dennis Rodman, since he wound up playing big roles on 5 championship teams. Jeff Hornacek's another one (same 86 draft as Price). Gilbert, of course. Carlos Boozer.
Curtis (New York)
John Wall, will live up to the hype? or will be a bust? whats your early predictions?
J.A. Adande (3:51 PM)
He'll be legit. Won't be the messiah, but I love his mental toughness. Was there any doubt he was going to take and make the big shots vs. UConn? And he still hasn't learned how to slow the game down his head yet. He can get much better.
1 question per chat should suffice on the bobcats..... what a chump that owner is.... seriously a huge embarrassment..... to think charlotte got rid of shin just to get johnson..... bad karma
J.A. Adande (3:52 PM)
What, exactly, did Charlotte do to deserve Shinn followed by Johnson? Especially the way those fans filled the arena in the early days of the Hornets.
Mark (Kansas City )
Do you see the Thunder making any moves or waiting until the offseason? Maybe go after a power forward or center?
J.A. Adande (3:53 PM)
Sam Presti is so cautious and has done so much to set himself up for this summer I don't see him doing anything to bring on more salary unless it's a major talent upgrade.
Earl (Conroe, TX)
J.A., whats your opinion on Aaron Brooks? he is tiny, but he is so fast and such a good shooter (when confident) that he is always a mismatch for opposing teams. Would a team with starters of Brooks, Scola, Ariza, Yao, plus a nice free agent this season be elite?
J.A. Adande (3:55 PM)
Yes, because then they wouldn't need Brooks to do so much. Like his game a lot, but you won't hang a banner if he's your main player.
Mark (Westchester NY)
How frustrated are Gortat and Bass on the Magic bench about hardly getting to play?
J.A. Adande (3:57 PM)
Talked to Bass when they were here vs. Clippers and he seemed very frustrated...and that was BEFORE he got a DNP-CD in the game. But he's still a good locker room guy, he's a great joke-mate for Dwight HOward, so it won't mess up the team very much.
J.A. Adande (3:58 PM)
OK, I'm have to run...gotta put money in the meter! haha. Here's a couple more takes on the ticket situation. Let the voices of the people be heard. FREEDOM!!!
Spencer (San Diego)
Fight it JA! I fought a ticket through mail once. I had photo eveidence and an argument. They summarily dismissed it six mnths later, and because I moved I didn't get the letter regarding that. I ended up paying twice the bogus ticket, and spent a half hour griping at a county worker who calmly explained there was nothing I could do. I did however get her to admit, that it was complete BS...and that itself was worth the extra dough. Damn the Man!
JA - I live in Hermosa Beach where we have permits to park on our street. My car got ticketed twice for no permit when it was on the rear view mirror. I lost both times. Meter maids suck. I say pay and move on.
Parking tickets (San Francisco)
whats up JA, hey man i go to sfsu i am 21 lived in LA for 20 years just moved up here but man i FEEL you, if its a 2 hour spot they will get you at 1 hr and 55 mins, and yes you should fight the ticket because of the principle because the state is overexercising their power, never a good thing, just because our state can't run itself doesn't mean its citizens should be the ones being burdened!!! go lakers and LETSHANNONDUNK.COM
