Sorry everyone ... Gordon will be here shortly, got caught up in bad weather in Indy.
gordon edes (12:09 PM)
Bad weather --- marginal reason. Balky wireless system overloaded by surplus of bad rumors in hotel, absolutely! But I'm here, so let's roll, though my cabbie told me airport has been closed here.
Greg (Brooklyn)
Are we really supposed to believe that the Tigers were asking for Ellsbury and Buchholz, considering what the Yankees gave up? Seems like the Sox are just trying to conceal their inability to make stuff happen. If the Yankees start spending their money wisely all of a sudden - the Sox are in trouble.
gordon edes (12:10 PM)
Tigers are getting back pitching and CF in the three-way, so yeah, I believe it.
tim (worcester,MA)
What is the latest on Roy Hallday?
gordon edes (12:12 PM)
Tim, The latest, according to my pal Joel Sherman of the NY Post, is that the Yankees are pushing hard. I still think the Angels are favorites, and depending on what the Red Sox do in LF, they're in the conversation.
Ben (Charlotte)
Well it looks like the Sox are going to sit on there behinds and do absolutely NOTHING while the team that just one the WS is making tons of moves.... did i miss something? Let me guess you will say... "they are going hard after bay" WHO CARES... this team needs TALENT! Get rid of your farm system for TOP NOTCH guys! Theo quit being a GIRL!
gordon edes (12:13 PM)
Ben, If by New Year's the Sox haven't done anything, then I can understand your frustration. But this is Day 3 of winter meetings, and things are still unfolding. Patience, my man, patience.
Simon (San Antonio)
Good morning, Gordo! A lot of people are saying the Yanks overpaid for Granderson, but I was thinking about it, and couldn't you see the guy hitting 30+ homers with ease playing half his games at Yankee Stadium II?
gordon edes (12:14 PM)
Simon, I like Granderson a lot, and while he can't hit left-handers, the Yankees certainly see him as eminently capable of hitting 30-40 playing at home in Yankee Stadium instead of Comerica. Good move by the Bombers. Terrific glove, too.
Ulrik (Viborg, Denmark)
Hey Gordon, great to see you at ESPN, how do you see Mike Lowell?s near future at Fenway?
gordon edes (12:17 PM)
Ulrik, Great to hear from the Scandinavian corner of the Nation. The Sox are hearing from teams that have interest in Lowell, and have let Scott Boras know that they have interest in Adrian Beltre. If they trade Mike, they could also move Kevin Youkilis to third and address first base (Is that you, Adrian Gonzalez?)
Josh (MA)
Gordon:Have the sox talked to the brewers about corey hart? Rumor had maine for hart and i know the sox can offer more than that and hes alot more affordable than bay. Then they could use their money to sign lackey? Any thoughts?
gordon edes (12:19 PM)
Josh, I have not heard the Red Sox involved in discussions with Hart. Brewers want a big-league pitcher back, one the Sox don't have to give.
Jason (Birmingham)
Gordon, do you think the Tigers could be the "mystery" team reportedly in on Milton Bradley? If the Cubs took Nate Robertson and Dontrelle Willis, the money is almost even; the Tigers spread the money over 2 years, saving them; they recover some offense after losing Granderson; and Jim Leyland doesn't mind crazy guys, Sheffield and Bonds being Exhibits A and A1?
gordon edes (12:21 PM)
In my conversations with the Cubs, there is no "mystery" team. No sense at all that Bradley is headed to Detroit. Funniest thing I heard a Cubs official say was in response to rumor that they were trading Bradley to Seattle for Carlos Silva. "Carlos Silva?" he said. "I'd rather have Milton AND his mother."
Ryan (NH)
do you think the sox will make a big move
gordon edes (12:23 PM)
Ryan, I actually do. I listened to Theo talk about how they're in a "bridge" period, with their top prospects due to arrive in '11 and '12, but he acknowledged the club still is positioned to make a strong run next year, and I'd be surprised to see them not fortify for the present while trying to preserve key chips (Casey Kelly, Ryan Westmoreland) going forward.
Steve (Middletown, CT)
Hey Gordon, what do you think about this scenario? The Red Sox let Bay walk giving them a first round pick and a sandwich pick in the upcoming draft. They then bring Mike Cameron in for a one year deal on the cheap and stick him in left. Next season Carl Crawford would be a free agent and still relatively young so the sox could make a run at him. With the money the sox save by not signing Bay this year they can go out and sign Harden or Sheets to an incentive laden deal and shore up the bullpen.
gordon edes (12:25 PM)
Steve, I don't think they need to save money on Bay to sign a Harden or Sheets type--those guys, with their injury histories, don't have a ton of leverage. Your left-field scenario is an interesting one, though I think the Sox would rather have Bay now than wait for a maybe in Crawford a year from now.
John (Palm Harbor, Fl)
What do the Tigers don't like in Edwin Jackson? He's young and a hard thrower just like the pitcher they are getting from Arizona.
gordon edes (12:26 PM)
John, my ESPN colleague Keith Law had an interesting post on this in the last day. Jackson's command just doesn't match up to itself, and got exposed in the season's second half last year. The D-Backs obviously feel differently, because they gave up a lot to get him.
Jeff Nowell (The Jersey Shore)
Hi Gordon, I just missed you yesterday, so I'll try again today. I've been bothered recently by the critism toward Mike Lowell. This guy, when healthy, is a vacuum at third, steady RBI producer & tremendous clubhouse/team first player. After his surgury, from what I read he only had enough time before spring traing to REHAB. There was no time for strengthing
gordon edes (12:29 PM)
Jeff, I don't think anyone is "criticizing" Mike Lowell per se. I think it's about the obvious impact his hip condition had on his defense last season, and the continuing uncertainty about how much he can recover at his age. People in Boston hold Lowell in the highest esteem, IMO.
gordon edes (12:29 PM)
Hey, we're scheduled to have lunch with the manager. Apologies for the abbreviated session. Chat again soon.
