Andy, what do you think the Hoosiers chances are realistically against the Wildcats? Can we pull it off?
Andy Katz (2:11 PM)
I'm convinced that the Hoosiers will put up quite a fight. But I'm not convinced Indiana can score with Kentucky for 40 minutes. I think we'll see Mr. Bookend John Wall come through early and late with a possible dip in the middle.
Brad M. (Marion, IN)
Purdue beat a good Tenn team only shooting 35% and a good Wake team shooting 1-16 behind the arc. With Purdue starting to shoot the ball like we thought they would do you see them as a legit top 5 team
Andy Katz (2:12 PM)
Yes. I never doubted Purdue was a top five to 10 team. The Boilermakers will be a legit competitor throughout the season for a Final Four berth. The Lewis Jackson injury didn't make this team flinch.
What does Demarcus Cousins have to work on to stay out of foul trouble? I believe Cuz on the floor more = easy wins for UK
Andy Katz (2:13 PM)
Not commit silly fouls. He and Daniel Orton have to watch being overaggressive. We saw a giant tease with Cousins on that one spin and dunk move during the Connecticut game.
Do you think ohio state can beat butler in hinkle fieldhouse without without evan turner?
Andy Katz (2:16 PM)
No. This will be a huge test for Ohio State to figure out how to play without Turner. If this game was in Columbus I would like Ohio State. But Butler has barely played at home and desperately needs this win and something positive to happen.
What do you think of the recent down turn of events in the WCC? Gonzaga's lost on Saturday doesn't mean as much, but Portland, San Diego and St. Mary's don't have any more opportunities available to improve their and the conference RPIs. IS the WCC back to a one bid team without a GU upset in the WCC tournament. Thanks.
Andy Katz (2:20 PM)
The problem is the margin for error is so thin and when Portland loses to Portland State and at Idaho the Pilots are suddenly dropped. The team to watch for a second bid now might be Saint Mary's, which is a deuce away from being undefeated. I'm not giving up on Portland now but the Pilots have dug themselves a hole. It can be erased with a win at Washington. San Diego has no shot at an at-large now.
Curtis Duvall (Bedford, Texas)
Are all the sports media blind to Kansas? Am I the only one who sees that they don't play ANYONE? In fact, the only top 20 team on their entire schedule is Texas, in Feb. They will enter the tournament 30-1, having played NO ONE! Then they'll get a 1 seed, and still not have to play anyone until the third round of the tournament. What they are allowed to get away with in scheduling is a crime.
Andy Katz (2:25 PM)
I have to disagree. The Memphis game was scheduled when the Tigers were expected to be loaded with the playes who are currently at Kentucky and one that is at Kansas (Xavier Henry), Cal was picked to win the Pac-10 and now that the Bears have been riddled with injuries the game doesn't look as strong. Kansas played at UCLA. Did anyone think the Bruins would slide this far? Texas played UCLA last season. Playing UCLA is hardly ever a bad game. Getting LaSalle in Kansas City isn't bad considering the Explorers could be a sleeper in the A-10 and not too many teams will play in Kansas City. Kansas goes to Temple in a true road game and I wouldn't sneeze at that game. And don't forget Kansas goes to Tennessee, perhaps one of the more underrated top 15 teams in the country. Is it equal to Michigan State and North Carolina? No. But Kansas did play Michigan State last season. So it's not like the Jayhawks ignore these teams. Texas catches the break on Feb. 8 with the one meeting between the two schools in Austin.
'76 Coug (Sammamish, WA)
Hi Andy,Started out very excited about Wazzu this year and then their youth hit me in the face by blowing a large lead at Gonzaga and getting creamed on the road by K-State. Do you think Ken Bone can channel these guys into making an upper half finish in a down PAC-10 is it probably "hit the weight room and wait 'till next year"? Thanks.
Andy Katz (2:26 PM)
The Cougars can make a run in the Pac-10 because the league is so weak. Blowing the lead at Gonzaga and losing at Kansas State is hardly something to be down about. I fully expect Klay Thompson to challenge for Pac-10 playe of the year and the Cougs to challenge for a top five Pac-10 finish.
Josh (Redmond, WA)
Will that state of Washington or Pac-10 get more teams into the NCAA tournament?
Andy Katz (2:27 PM)
Good call.I'd say it's even.Ultimately I think the state of Washington will have two teams (Gonzaga and Washington) and the Pac-10 will have two (Washington and Cal).
sam (palo alto)
Who do you think has a better shot at winning the Ivy title this year, Cornell or Harvard?
Andy Katz (2:31 PM)
I'm going playoff, one game playoff.Harvard will win in Cambridge and Cornell will win in New York. The two teams will sweep through the rest of the league. But will anyone stop Nonwa Agho of Columbia. He's shooting 64.3 percent on 3s. He went for 31 against Bucknell and just put up 30 on Wagner. He might be one of the best shooters in the country.
Matt (San Diego)
If the pac-10 did somehow sneak a third team in, who is the frontrunner...I still think Arizona, with the weakness of the league, could win enough to sneak in, and they have the best chances remaining for good wins (SDSU, NC State, BYU)
Andy Katz (2:33 PM)
I'm not sold yet on 'Zona. NC State won't be considered a good win by the end of the year, or shall I say a win over an NCAA tournament team. I'm not sure San Diego State will ultimately qualify, either. Better beat BYU. I agree Arizona can move to No. 3 in the Pac-10 but that might not be good enough for the overall resume.
Todd Hall (Louisville,ky)
UK has been praised as being back by many people in the media yet coach Calipari criticizes them saying they are not that good saying quote "we're a 4-5 team" is this him downplaying UK's talent or does he believe UK is that overrated?
Andy Katz (2:34 PM)
He's just trying to humble his team so they don't get too egotistical.
Allen (Morgantown, WV)
Hey Katz...what does Bob Huggins need to accomplish on the court this year to have a shot at the Final Four, in your opinion?
Andy Katz (2:35 PM)
Rebound and defend in the post. The Mountaineers have the point guard (Darryl Bryant) and two of the best scoring wings/forwards in Da'Sean Butler and Devin Ebanks. Ebanks is also a long, Syracuse-like defender. Casey Mitchell can make big-time 3s and when used so can Jonnie West. I really liked this team while watching them in Anaheim.
Is WVU still your favorite to win the Big East?
Andy Katz (2:36 PM)
I still like this squad. But I could easily see West Virginia, Syracuse and Villanova being bunched at the top with some sort of tiebreaker used to determine the top seed.
Do you think that Kansas State should be ranked in the top 25? They are 8-1 with solid wins over Xavier, Washington State, and previously ranked Dayton at a nuetral court.
Andy Katz (2:36 PM)
Yes. I would rank Kansas State in the top 25 now but we'll see what happens against UNLV.
Do you think we will see the number of mid major at large bids continue to decrease this year or will it be a bounce back year for the middies?
Andy Katz (2:37 PM)
WCC has a shot at multiple bids.Butler will likely get in even without winning the Horizon.I don't consider the MWC a mid-major or the A-10. But there will be multiple bids in both of those conferences. I don't see the MAAC getting multiple bids.

Missouri Valley front runner is......
Andy Katz (2:38 PM)
Was and remains Northern Iowa.
John (Philadelphia, PA)
Surprisingly, Temple is 7-2 and has a few decent wins. Considering how tough St. Joe's played Villanova the other night, do you think the Owls have a shot?
Andy Katz (2:39 PM)
Yes. Don't think the Owls will win but I've learned long ago not to underestimate Temple.
I hope a possible WCC/A10 "Challenge" occurs for the future. Good possibility?
Andy Katz (2:39 PM)
Yes. Strong possibility. The Gonzaga-Xavier game is already set.
John wall is clearly one of the nations best players and COULD be next years #1 NBA draft pick do you think he is a for sure one-and-done?
Andy Katz (2:41 PM)
No question. Wall is as much a lock of being the No. 1 pick as LeBron James, Yao Ming and Blake Griffin. Even if you have a point guard (Utah for example) that you like and have locked up you still take Wall and deal with it after the fact.
do you think in order to ever win a national championship Gonzaga must move into a more competitive league such as the pac-10 in order to a a tougher regular season schedule, and more real test for the national tournament?
Andy Katz (2:42 PM)
No. Has nothing to do with it. The WCC may get as many teams in as the Pac-10 this season. Matchups and seedings has been an issue for the Zags, not conference affiliation.
James (Houston, TX)
Andy, How good is Coach Turgeon's Texas A&M team this year? It seems they are always a bit underrated. Why is that?
Andy Katz (2:43 PM)
Because it's Texas A&M and the Aggies don't flow off the tongue in college hoops. But I really enjoyed watching this team in Anaheim. B.J. Holmes will be a big-time, late-game, go-to talent.
Does Michigan State have enough talent/experience to compensate for lack of a dominating center?
Andy Katz (2:44 PM)
Yes. I still like the Spartans to find a way to get to the Final Four. If the guards are as consistent as they should be then the Spartans can offset the loss of a true center. Draymond Green has performed well of late. I'm not down on Sparty at all.
Mike (Albany, NY)
Northern Iowa vs. Siena - thoughts?
Andy Katz (2:45 PM)
Siena can't get in as at-large but stil is right there to win the MAAC with Fairfield (and we'll see about St. Peter's and Niagara). UNI is the real deal and has plenty of shooters to cause problems.
With Memphis down this year, does another C-USA team dethrone them this year, or make it close enough to be a multi-bid year?
Andy Katz (2:45 PM)
Ultimately I still see Memphis making the NCAA tournament with UTEP and maybe Tulsa. Two of the three for sure with three a possibility.
Chris (Sierra Vista, AZ)
When will the media start to agree that the Big East is as good a league as last year and is if not the best, close to being the toughest league in the country.
Andy Katz (2:46 PM)
I don't think there has been much debate of late. The Big East has been the best.
Andy Katz (2:46 PM)
Thanks for all the questions. I'm sure we'll be chatting on a weekly basis this year.
