Stephania Bell (11:02 AM)
Good Morning Sports Nation and welcome to the Injury Chat! I'm still savoring the 49ers' Monday night performance. Was so great to be at the game. Wish they could have performed like that all season long. Lots of bright spots...Hope everyone has moved on to the next round of fantasy playoffs!
chris (coming out of my by week with a injury)
good 11 am to you Stephania... i guess i should get right to it.... whats the word on Fitzgerald???
Stephania Bell (11:05 AM)
Chris: I think he's the biggest injury story of Week 14 simply because he is such a top player - and one who rarely gets hurt. It looked a bit scary last night, he was clearly uncomfortable on the sidelines. The team is calling it a knee sprain. Not much is known outside of that and he's got an MRI scheduled for today. I will say the fact he returned to the game is a good sign. We'll know more after MRI results.
Vince (New Orleans)
Indy Coach Caldwell mentioned that "Healthy" players will play Thursday. Peyton and Reggie were on the injury report all last week, should I be concerned about starting Reggie over Steve Smith (south), and Peyton over Jason Campbell? Or stick with my studs in the playoffs. Thanks.
Stephania Bell (11:07 AM)
Vince: I think Peyton and Reggie play this week based on what Caldwell said. Of course, there's room for interpretation here - but given that the game is Thursday, you'll know in advance. But Caldwell said they're approaching it like Week 13 - so assume those guys go.
With Maclin out who is the better pick up Avant or Reggie Brown?
Stephania Bell (11:08 AM)
Melbs: Have to say Avant - more upside here and think he gets more targets.
Since it looks like Michael Turner is going to at least practice some this week can he be counted on this week to not have a repeat of a couple weeks ago?
Stephania Bell (11:11 AM)
Phil: Nope. Just can't count on anything here as I think his status is very day-to-day. I would say this. Really look at Turner's activity each day. Last week he didn't practice at all, not even walkthroughs. So the notion that he would play was very suspect. When he re-injured his ankle, he was coming off a week of extremely limited activity. I have to believe that Turner will need to demonstrate some confidence in the ankle in practice before they put him on the field.
Dustin (Slc, ut)
Steven Jackson, Is his injury going to hinder him the rest of the year, and do you think they will stop playing him, because they arent playing for anything?
Stephania Bell (11:14 AM)
Dustin: This is a popular - and totally reasonable - question. Now we're learning that Steven Jackson has a herniated disc (which is actually a fairly common injury, not just affecting athletes). Since he's been playing with it, I don't think his status changes UNLESS his symptoms progress. With a disc you worry about the nerves that go to the lower extremities becoming affected. If Jackson develops pain or especially weakness into a leg, then he will be removed from play. So at this immediate moment, I think he continues, but we'll keep an eye on his symptoms.
Shane (Jupiter, FL)
Stephania, thanks very much for the help this year. Couldn't have done it without you. I need some Matt Stafford insight being a Calvin Johnson owner. Please tell me I don't have to suffer with Culpepper again this week!
Stephania Bell (11:16 AM)
Shane: Wish I could tell you for sure - but even coach Jim Schwartz, who usually doesn't give much away, has said that they will see how Stafford feels this week. The hint is that they will continue to rest him if he is still having pain in that shoulder. It's just not worth the risk of this thing becoming chronic if he gets driven to the turf again before he's had a chance to progress with healing.
Good morning Stephania! Is Matt Ryan coming back this week?
Stephania Bell (11:21 AM)
Alan: I'm not especially confident. I really didn't see him playing last week based on the limited work he was able to do. Just b/c he didn't need surgery on that toe (at least not right away), doesn't mean it wasn't significant. I think they'll see whether he can step it up in practice. If not, i doubt they risk more serious toe injury or other injury for that matter, and if he doesn't get back this week, well I wouldn't be surprised if that's the end.
Brandon Adkins (Atlanta)
What is the word on Percy Harvin? Is he likely to sit out again in week 15?
Stephania Bell (11:24 AM)
Brandon: Harvin is a tough call because his issue is so day-to-day; there's not really a healing time so to speak. One of the big factors last week was that Harvin was affected throughout the week to the degree he could not participate in game plan prep. If the headaches are gone, they'll play him again without hesitation, as long as he can prepare. To that end, I would expect that he returns this week.
What is the status on Donald Brown? I'm hesitant to play Addai even though Caldwell said that the starter will play. If Brown is still looking like he won't play, I would think that Addai would be a safe start.
Stephania Bell (11:25 AM)
Adam: He really hasn't been able to do anything at all practice-wise with the chest injury. Given Caldwell only playing healthy guys and this being a short week, I would imagine that Brown will not play again this week in the hopes they get him back in Week 16.
ST. Nick (North Pole)
I have the curse of Stephania Bell on my team this year for TE's - I had Owens, then Pettigrew, and finally Z. Miller. Is he out this week do you think?
Stephania Bell (11:26 AM)
Yes you do have the curse. So sorry. Zach Miller will not likely play this week after suffering his second concussion of the season.
Warner got hit hard a couple of times last night. Any worse for the wear?
Stephania Bell (11:30 AM)
Mike: I actually thought he might come out of the game early. He limped off the field in what appeared to be either a groin or quad injury (it was hard to tell based on where he had the icepack). Matt Leinart started stretching on the sideline as if he'd go in. But Warner persevered through the game - although I have no doubt that the discomfort contributed to him not really looking like himself. I would not be surprised if he's limited in practice early in the week given there's one less day of rest, but I don't think there was anything severe enough to keep him out.
Dan (Walnut Creek,CA)
Good morning Stephania! Heading into the playoffs and was curious what your thoughts are about MSW. He is largely responsible for getting me here but has been apparently injured and atrocious the past couple of weeeks. Do you trust that knee this week or roll with someone like Ganther? Thanks!
Stephania Bell (11:35 AM)
Dan: If he doesn't show significant improvement in practice this week, I'd be leery. After all, he was downgraded during the week b/c of the calf (which was something new beyond the knee issue he'd been dealing with). He went into the game doubtful - and I was shocked that he played. Clearly he was not really effective. And I don't think he will be magically better that quickly.
Chris (Bowmanville, ON)
Good morning Stephania!! Do you think this is the week the Eagles will welcome back Westbrook??
Stephania Bell (11:38 AM)
Chris: The Delaware County Times is reporting that the Eagles are looking at a Week 15 return of Brian Westbrook. Naturally this could change. Much depends on how confident Westbrook is about his return along with the appropriate medical clearances. I would not be surprised if he does come back this week given that he returned to practice last week. But if Westbrook or the team has any doubts leading up to Sunday, it could be a moot point.
Whats up with Burleson? should I drop him for Bowe or Garcon, not sure the extent of his injury, last I heard he was getting an MRI on Monday
Stephania Bell (11:42 AM)
Anthony: All that I've heard so far is that he had an MRI on his ankle. It sounds as if the Seahawks are not terribly concerned, but the results had not been announced as of last evening. I would be looking at Garcon myself. I think he could see more action in Week 15 and especially 16 with Wayne still dealing with a foot issue. I think Wayne plays this week - but not sure for how long - and I think Wayne likely sits in Week 16.
J.B. (Dunmore, PA)
For the 'Star' on the ESPN tree: Any updates on Shiancoe's rib injury? He really seemed to struggle this past weekend. Not sure if it was the injury or Bengals' game plan. Thanks so much.
Stephania Bell (11:46 AM)
J.B: Shiancoe still hurting with the ribs but playing through. I did not actually see this one so it was hard for me to judge how much the ribs were actually a factor, but I would not be surprised as these are definitely debilitating in the sense that guys can't reach/extend, twist, etc as well - and as the game goes on and they get banged around and breathe harder with fatigue, the ribs become more of an issue. Time only helps and I would expect him to be in a lot better shape by this weekend.
Tim Hightower looks like he fumbled his way out of the starting job, especially with Beanie stepping up. Is his thumb the issue with all these fumbles and has his coach lost trust in him?
Stephania Bell (11:50 AM)
Will: hard to blame the thumb. I saw the hit which forced Hightower's shoulder down and that alone could have been responsible. Remember last week he had an early fumble and then was solid afterward. And of course they put Beanie in last night and he also had a fumble. But that all said, it sure looks like they're going in the Beanie Wells direction - which may be for a combo of reasons. So I expect Wells to get more touches going forward.
Mark (Boardman, Ohio)
Whats the latest word on Correll Buckhalter, will he sit this weekend making Moreno a top RB option?
Stephania Bell (11:51 AM)
Mark: MCDaniels not revealing that card this early - but I will say that Buckhalter being on crutches after the game is certainly not a good sign. This is not the same ankle he injured earlier in the season so that's one good thing. But unless he's running by Thursday, I'd expect him out.
Steve (San Francisco)
Did Rackers come out of last nights game OK, I like his next 2 match-ups for the play-offs?
Stephania Bell (11:55 AM)
Steve: He certainly didn't look comfortable throughout and I believe the groin was a factor. That said, he did boot a long one at one point - so it was somewhat up and down. My guess is that he gets a lot of treatment and rest this week, with the goal of playing Sunday. But will he be fully healthy by then? Doubt it - so it may be a bit of a guessing game.
Titans injuries... can you update us on Young, Gage, and Javon Ringer? I am trying to decide whether to pick up Britt in my ppr/return yard league. Thanks!
Stephania Bell (11:59 AM)
Rick: Without even updating the injuries I would say pick up Britt. Mentioned Young and his HS earlier, Gage is back (he played last week but I believe only had one catch) - while I think Gage will increase his activity some, I still think Britt remains the favorite target for the time being.
Tyler (Portland, OR)
What's your take on playing Roddy White next week? I kind've half to give that the best I can do to back him up is Kevin Boss (BTW who a college friend go Western Oregon!). For White does lingering injury + Revis equal doom in the first round for my team?
Stephania Bell (12:02 PM)
Tyler: I don't like the matchup for White - at all. I can't imagine that you can't find another alternative besides Boss(?) I like Boss's size and he can give you a good game, but it's highly inconsistent.
Anything new on Hines Ward ?
Stephania Bell (12:03 PM)
Joel: Not this early in the week. Prob not until Weds. But the fact that he played Thursday (although he didn't do much and didn't look like himself) gives you confidence that after 10 days off, he should be in far better shape for Week 15.
Isn't there a law that says Tom Brady has to be discussed in every chat?
Stephania Bell (12:04 PM)
Bill: Since you asked...assume he's playing, but clearly not himself. Nonetheless, a banged-up Brady is a far better fantasy choice than at least half the other QBs in the league.
I dont see Vince Young mentioned anywhere
Stephania Bell (12:07 PM)
Brian: Thought I had - maybe it was the podcast. Day-to-day with a hamstring strain - on the same leg that had the "knee" problem going into the game. Not sure it's not all part of the same issue. Definitely remains a concern for this week. Will not know anything definitive potentially until gametime - but if he's back in practice by Thursday, that's a good sign.
Stephania Bell (12:07 PM)
OK - don't want to overstay my welcome...time to go. Have a great week - I'll see you Friday - and go Niners!!!
