J.A. Adande (3:02 PM)
Hi everybody. Quick parking ticket update. I was able to postpone the court appearance, even though I technically wasn't supposed to because you are supposed to give them notification at least 7 days in advance. But when I told them I only received the notice to appear 5 days in advanced, they realized they were being shady and allowed me to reschedule. So it will probably come up in June sometime, when I'm traveling for the NBA Finals. Now that we've addressed that, let's talk some NBA...
Jesse (Ferndale, MI)
The Raptors are going to have to trade Bosh. Theres no concievable reason for him to return to Toronto. The front office has made some sloppy moves, the team is struggling, it isn't a city that will attract other big name free agents... there's just not a lot to excited about with this franchise. And letting Bosh walk for nothing, in my opinion, is just cause to fire Coloangelo. So they gotta move him, right?
J.A. Adande (3:03 PM)
Toronto would seem to be at a disadvantage for free agents, but you're thinking in American terms. To foreign players the idea of playing in Toronto isn't so bad. It didn't stop Hedo Turkoglu from going there instead of a better team in America (Portland). So I wouldn't automatically rule out Toronto as a FA destination for the ever-growing pool of international guys.
Anthony (Douglas, MA)
Don't you think that the best spot for Lebron is actually Oklahoma City? Forget the large market bit, the best place for him to win is there. Wouldn't that be the most exiting team in the league by far with Lebron, Durant and Westbrook! Your looking at ten years of match up nightmares! They would be a title contender instantly and they have the cap room to sign him. Why should he go to the Knicks or Nets? So he can be in the same postion he's in now! The one-two punch alone would make them the most followed team in the world! Who wouldn't tune in to see that team play? It would be great for the league and for Lebron!
J.A. Adande (3:04 PM)
Oklahoma City, on the other hand, is going to have a tough time getting guys. Foreign or domestic. They're going to have to overpay some 2nd-tier guys.
I like Nate Robinson, should my Suns go after him and his energy?
J.A. Adande (3:06 PM)
Remember who Alvin Gentry's guy was...Mike D'Antoni. You think Mike is chatting up Nate to Alvin? Doubt it. I'm sure Alvin sits on the phone, lets Mike vent about Nate, then thinks (better you than me).
I thought about scenarios on how Miller could be traded, and I thought Bibby would be perfect, the shooter Portland needs. Atlanta would benefit too, adding a passer to a roster full of scorers, they'd get better. The only thing stopping this trade would be ATL's recent sucess (due to chemistry), and Johnson's play style being similar to Roy's.
J.A. Adande (3:07 PM)
I think you answered your own question. Bibby's had more playoff success than Miller, the Hawks have a good thing going, no way they make that move.
J.A, what are the chances of Anthony Randolph getting traded this year?
J.A. Adande (3:08 PM)
As good as anyone's. Basically Golden State's whole roster is for sale.
andrew (cleveland, ohio)
hey J.A. who should the cavaliers target at the trade deadline. A PF or a SG and please dont tell me we shoud keep everyone and do nothing.
J.A. Adande (3:10 PM)
I think a skilled power forward. There are rumblings the Hornets would like to move David West. I'd send them Big Z's contract and take on whoever else the Hornets wanted to throw in.
Freddy (Los Angeles)
Do you think players will now be more cognizant of how strict the NBA's social media policy is with the latest fine issued to Brandon Jennings?
J.A. Adande (3:11 PM)
That ought to get their attention. I've seen media members remind players not to tweet right after games...I think some of these guys are addicted to their blackberries. But I can't think of anything that's so urgent to tell the world that I'd pay $7,500 to tweet it.
J.A. Adande (3:12 PM)
With the possible exception of a resolution to this parking ticket saga.
Shamus (Plattsburgh, NY)
Instead of Lebron to OKC, how about Houston? They could very well have the cap space, they have an international icon, a GM who knows what he's doing, ditto coach, and arguably the best collection of gritty role players in the nba!
J.A. Adande (3:16 PM)
This brings up a good point about the changing nature of the biz. You never hear Houston mentioned with the big cities like NY, LA or Chi. But look at the popularity of Tracy McGrady, all because of the internet and because he plays with Yao Ming. McGrady's huge in China, and I'm sure that's where a lot of his all-star votes are coming from. As an agent told me, I could play alongside Yao and get voted to the all-star game because of the Yao effect. I do think LeBron is savvy enough to think of something like that. Not that all of the pieces can come into place to make it work, but it's yet another argument against "LeBron has to go to NY"
Mark (Westchester NY)
Everyone has been crying about the gift of a trade when the Lakers got Pau Gasol from the Grizzlies... but seeing Marc Gasol dominate down there in Memphis would the Lakers REALLY be all that different with the 1 inch taller, 20 lbs heavier, 5 year younger brother?
J.A. Adande (3:16 PM)
As Gregg Popovich said when asked if Marc Gasol's play makes the trade less lopsided: "Please." (wish there was an emoticon for an eye roll).
mike (london, uk)
im a big lbj fan and think he should win mvp again this year. his all round game is better than anyone's in the league. however kobe is the most 'like mike' with his ability to get off any shot whenever he wants and not forgetting carmelo and his scoring. who do you think will win mvp?
J.A. Adande (3:20 PM)
I still think Carmelo keeping his team at or near the top of the west would warrant the MVP. The Pau factor diminishes Kobe's MVP bid. The Lakers are so much better with him in the lineup, Kobe can even sit back on some nights. Carmelo doesn't have a guy like that.
If Tyreke can continue at a 20, 5 and 5 pace does he deserve an All Star spot, even though his chances are very low in a guard heavy West. His numbers are better than Roy at this point, and the Kings have far outplayed everyone's expectations while Portland has struggled at times. The man is even mentioned on some MVP boards!! Tyreke is a beast!!
J.A. Adande (3:23 PM)
Even if Portland has struggled the Blazers still have a winning record, which Sacramento can't say. I love how Evans is playing, but a guy who's been a vital part of a winner should get the nod.
where do you see the pups going the rest of the year? is flynn the right guy (looking better and better)? also in the end will we be able to keep/play efficently love and al together or will one need to go? if so who? also all this talk of us trading sessions during season seams farfeched to me (draft yes) as we have no one else that can play point and why trade another team for there pt who will most likely be worse with less upside. thanks for answering and have a great holiday.
J.A. Adande (3:26 PM)
Flynn sure showed me a lot in that Utah game, even though D-Will gave him everything he could handle. And I continue to believe you Love and Jefferson won't work together because they're both slow and will get killed defensively. I'd imagine Love will be cheaper to keep because his scoring numbers wont be as high.
Ted (Appleton, WI)
I saw the Bucks were rated the least valuable NBA franchise, they havent made any real playoff noise since 2000-2001, I've been a Bucks fan my whole life and the Big 3 (as we call them in WI) is the best Bucks team we've ever had and i don't know if we'll ever get back to that level. should us Bucks fans be worried about relocation?
J.A. Adande (3:28 PM)
Obviously your life hasn't been very long if you're calling this squad the best in Bucks history. Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and Oscar Robertson...Give me those 2 over any 3 the Bucks have had since that championship squad.
Paquaio/Mayweather - who wins and where should it be held - Vegas or Cowboy Statdium?
J.A. Adande (3:29 PM)
That fight's gotta be in Vegas. I know Jerry wants to have his big showcase, but boxing shouldn't be in venues that big (even with gigantic screens) and Vegas is made for events like that.
When is McGrady going to see regular burn?
J.A. Adande (3:30 PM)
Another GM thinks Houston will play him just enough to showcase him for trades.
Will (Los Angeles, CA)
I've heard over and over that most GM's would STILL to this day take Oden over Durant in their draft. I get the "reason" behind it, but COME ON! Roy, Durant, & Aldridge? That's the elite (Durant), very good (Roy), and third piece (Aldridge) that makes a contending team. You don't agree?
J.A. Adande (3:31 PM)
I don't think it's "to this day" I think the key phrase is "at that time". Because if you asked today you've got to go with Durant. But GMs I talk to say they would have gone with Oden back then.
Doesn't carmelo have billups, a former finals MVP, multi-ple all-star, and very nice player. Sure he isn't where he used to be, but every star on a good team ahs to have a sidekick, or you only have a decent team.
J.A. Adande (3:33 PM)
Big difference between sidekick and second star. Kobe wasn't a sidekick to Shaq, they were a devastating 1-2 punch. Pau is much more of a problem for defenses than Billups is. That's why I'm giving more props to Carmelo and what he's doing.
Chris Baker (England)
Should the Suns be concerned with their recent road losses? Or is it mainly a mixture of bad luck, fatigue, a tough schedule, and tough match ups? I still think the record they have right now is great considering what they've gone through.
J.A. Adande (3:35 PM)
they should be concerned with their 17-game losing streak on TNT. That's what they get for playing on an inferior network. From now on they should insist on playing all national games on ESPN. (Just kidding; I have a lot of friends at TNT and they do a great job).
Do you think with the recent success of Bayless it makes the trading of Andre Miller more likely? Also what do you think of Andre Miller to Washington for Caron Butler?
J.A. Adande (3:37 PM)
It's not about Portland's willingness to give up Miller, it's about other teams willing to take him. So Bayless' play doesn't change the fact that Miller is 33 and just started a long contract.
parking ticket story in DC. got a ticket for marking more than an hour and 20 minutes at a 2 hour max meter. So I got a ticket because someone can't tell the difference between an 1:20 and 120. i didn't pay the ticket and i didn't fight it I just sold the car. please comment on this wiz hypothetical? arenas + deshaun stevenson to philly for elton brand and dalembart. philly has 3 young bigs speights, young, jason smith and eddie gets two guys who can run the princeton offense and a potential popular player when AI leaves. Wizards/Bullets first trade ever where they trade small for big. and they can then trade expiring contracts like haywood to denver/san antonio/boston/cleveland for future #1 pick
J.A. Adande (3:39 PM)
I like that whole post, from the innovative solution to getting out of a ticket to the subliminal reference to the Wallace-for-Strickland and Webber-for-Richmond trades back in the day.
Freddy (Los Angeles)
On CNBC, you mentioned that Tiger Woods will be perceived by the public as an underdog for the first time in his career, will Tiger relish in that role and will the public embrace him once again on the same pedestal he once held?
J.A. Adande (3:43 PM)
We've seen over and over again that as long as you win, the public will take you back. One thing that separates Tiger from, say, Kobe Bryant and Ray Lewis. He doesn't have a team, with a built-in fan base that will root for anyone wearing the jersey. So he'll have to win back support all on his own. Another aspect that makes his situation unprecedented. I also wonder if Elin fast-tracks the divorce if it speeds up Tiger's return. What's the point of staying away from golf if there's no marriage to save?
Matt (Chicago, IL)
JA - Is it just me or does it seem like Shaq & Lebron are not close at all? They seemed like the same personality and stuff but you don't see them having fun together.
J.A. Adande (3:45 PM)
Shaq's 13 years older than LeBron. I'm around Shaq's age; I don't hang with people LeBron's age. close to being different generations. And from an NBA perspective, definitely different generations.
How about Bayless last night?!? Portland needs to get rid of Blake! Bayless played great with Roy last night! Any chance he gets more minutes even after everyone gets healthy?
J.A. Adande (3:47 PM)
Here's the problem with shipping out Steve Blake: he's only making $4.9 million, so if you want to get a quality player making $9 or $10 million you need to add another player to the package...and the Blazers are too thin right now to send out 2 players in exchange for 1. So I don't anticipate them making a move real soon
Spike Lee (New York, NY)
What will be plan "B" for my New York Knicks if we don't sign LeBron?
J.A. Adande (3:48 PM)
How does Joe Johnson sound?
PLEASE tell me you're not wasting your time with Avatar this weekend. If I hear one more review of a new "blockbuster" movie that's highly regarded solely because it "looks good" i'm going to barf. Dialogue and script-writing becoming extinct if film JA...
J.A. Adande (3:50 PM)
Here's why I don't think Avatar will be a waste (especially since it wasn't my $300 million that made it): Cameron pushed the technological envelope and now there are new possibilities that didn't exist before. So imagine if a really good writer is inspired to write a script that takes advantage of these effects? Then you'd have the ultimate movie.
Andre Miller doesn't have a long contract. He is very trade able only this season and next are guaranteed. 3rd year is a team option.
J.A. Adande (3:52 PM)
I used the wrong terminology. But anything that runs through the 2010 shopping bonanza isn't desirable.
Would Shaq (circa 2000) and Lebron (Circa 2009) be better than the Shaq-Kobe dynasty?
J.A. Adande (3:53 PM)
No. Shaq and Kobe's games meshed better than a prime Shaq and LeBron's would have. Kobe didn't need to get to the places Shaq occupied, as LeBron does.
Julio (Anaheim Hills)
Good article by Hollinger on Wade's struggles this season. Do you think he has become so frustrated with his teammates that he is going through the motions right now?
J.A. Adande (3:55 PM)
I'd describe it as picking his spots more than going through the motions. He can still summon some great play, such as his fourth quarter against the Lakers a couple of weeks ago. But it is born of frustration with the team, and the need to pace himself so he'll have something left come playoff time. It's tough to carry a team all 82.
J.A. Adande (3:57 PM)
Ok, I have a deadline for ESPN.com material looming so I have to run. Thanks for your questions. No chats the next 2 Fridays (Christmas and New Year's) so we'll resume Jan. 8. Happy and safe holidays to you all. I'm out like 2009.
