Beano Cook (3:05 PM)
Good afternoon and welcome. Tomorrow night, we will crown a new national champion, and then we will have to wait eight months for the next college football game. It also means I have to suffer through the baseball season. I will make my prediction at the end of this chat. I did pick Florida to win the national title before the season, and obviously I was wrong. Fire away with your questions.
How about some love for Chris Petersen? Isn't it a shame that Boise State doesn't get a shot at Alabama-Texas winner?
Beano Cook (3:07 PM)
Boise State won over a good TCU game. I am not saying they couldn't beat Alabama or Texas, but face reality, the Broncos will not get a shot. The winner of the Tide-Longhorns game deserves the national title.
Since our favovite grandpa other then you has ridden off into the sunset what are your thoughts on Bobby Bowden and how badly did the FSU admin handle the whole situation?
Beano Cook (3:08 PM)
I won't say the way they handled the situation was handled as badly as Katrina was handled, but I will say it was handled pretty poorly. A lot of people who made that decision forgot what Bobby Bowden did for Florida State. You know the saying, what have you done for me lately? That's what the administration ther felt, I guess.
Rick (Los Angeles)
Did you think the Mike Leach firing had more to do with the contract negotiations last year than the Adam James furor?
Beano Cook (3:09 PM)
Yes, I think it had a lot to do with it, $800,000 worth.
Beano Cook (3:10 PM)
The highlight of the postseason was when Bobby Bowden put the spear into the turf.
Beano, do you see Urban coming back to coach next season or maybe never? I think his health is the most important issue. The team is going to drop off whether he's there or not. Why put himself in the middle of a no win situation, at least next year?
Beano Cook (3:12 PM)
I agree with what people at CBS said last week, that he won't be coaching at Florida in 2010. Do I think he will coach again? Yes. If I had to make a prediction, on a different topic, if Michigan doesn't win six or seven games next season, Meyer may end up there in 2011. I disagree with your statement about Florida. If his health had been good, he would have been in the sidelines in Gainesville in 2010. I believe him when he says it is a health situation.
Why do you think past Heisman winners have failed so much in the national championship? Pressure, distractions???
Beano Cook (3:13 PM)
It is hard to say. Distractions could be the reason. We will see how Mark Ingram does tomorrow night. His distraction may be in Orange and White.
On December 9, 2009..."xxxx (xxxx, xx)Is this the year the BigTen breaks out of its bowl slump?Beano Cook (4:18 PM)Could be. Penn State is pretty good. Iowa is good. It's hard to believe that Ohio State is the underdog to Oregon. But OSU could win this game. No matter what the Big Ten does, it's not as good as the SEC, Big 12 or Pac-10."Thoughts?
Beano Cook (3:16 PM)
Number one, the Big Ten did very well. Iowa and Ohio State won their BCS bowls, and Penn State over LSU was impressive. You see that I felt the Buckeyes had a legit shot. I have said it before and I will say it again ... I don't judge a conference on one season, I prefer to look over five years. If you just look at scheduling, Ohio State has an excellent shot to play for the national title. Based on the Rose Bowl, Terrelle Pryor is a candidate for the Heisman Trophy next season.
Alex (Austin, Texas)
Why do you think Mack Brown is a special coach?
Beano Cook (3:18 PM)
He has done a great job at Texas. He won one national championship and he has a shot at a second. Also remember last year, when the Longhorns fell just short against Texas Tech or there may have been another chance at the title. I believe his players play hard for him.
Brian Bernstein (Syracuse, Ny)
i have the perfect college fball playoff system utilizing the BCS format. its as follows:u take the top 12 teams in the final BCS poll. the top 4 have a bye and u put each of the 4 in either one of four brackets( rose, fiesta, sugar or orange). the rest of the 8 teams play a game to earn a spot in one of the above brackets. so #5 vs # 12 6 vs 11 7 vs 10 and 8 vs 9. the winners of these games will be re-seeded and the lowest seed left goes to play the top seeded team etc...for arguements sake lets say all the top seeded teams win there first rd games. you would have # 8 vs #1 in the rose bowl.....#7 vs # 2 in the fiestsa bowl.....#6 vs #3 in the sugar bowl and # 5 vs #4 in the orange bowl.....the four winners go on to a college football final four....the rest of the bowl eligible teams make up the rest of the bowls and this way u would have more teams in bowls. everyone is happy and think of all the money that would be made since that seems to be the big issue.......brian bernstein
Beano Cook (3:20 PM)
It is easy to point out how it would work. Really, the next step is a plus-one game, and that is several years away. All this talk of having some kind of tournament has been going on in ernest since 1966, so this is nothing new. Eventually, 10-15 years away, we may see an eight-team playoff.
Here's a new rule for the NCAA to institute: throw the freezng Gatorade on the losing coach, not the winner.
Beano Cook (3:20 PM)
Chris (Charlotte, NC)
There seems to be a ground swell movement forming to get Boise St. invited to the White House. I'm COMPLETELY for it!!!! How about you?
Beano Cook (3:21 PM)
That would be great. Honor their unbeaten season and it is a red state, and I don't think that will change. I think it is a good idea.
Baron (Large, PA)
Who are your favorite College Football players of All-Time? Hope you include Gordon "Too Much" Jones. Thanks
Beano Cook (3:22 PM)
That is tough to say. My favorite name was Doak Walker of SMU. I love them all. Anyone who gets to play college football is special in their own was and I am envious of them.
Beano, why would Urban Meyer leave Florida for Michigan?
Beano Cook (3:24 PM)
Look, all I am saying is...I don't think he will coach Florida in 2010. I am not alone in my thinking. I hope he stays at Florida and the games against Nick Saban will be classic, like Julius Caesar and Alexander the Great. Caesar would be a three-point favorite as long as the game wasn't played on March 15th.
Monte R. (Des Moines)
Were you surprised that Iowa beat Georgia Tech?
Beano Cook (3:25 PM)
No. I thought the Hawkeyes had a good chance and Kirk Ferentz is an outstanding coach. Stanzi got off to a hot start and Tech couldn't catch up.
Beano Cook (3:26 PM)
On a different topic, a coach who continues to impress me is Northwestern's Pat Fitzgerald. For his team to play that well against Auburn is incredible. I feel the Tigers have many more players than the Wildcats. One game which surprised me was Iowa State over Minnesota.
Do you think Jimmy Clausen made a mistake not revealing his injury during the season? He looked pretty good for a guy who played hurt?
Beano Cook (3:27 PM)
You said it...he played darn well for a guy who was hurt. Now we will have to see where he goes in the draft, probably top 10. Ask Kiper in his next chat!
JL (Warrenton, Virginia)
Beano: You heard it here first. The Big 10 will incorporate another school next year to make 12 members then change their name to the Big 11.
Beano Cook (3:29 PM)
My prediction is that Missouri will join the Big Ten. The Tigers will be in the same division with Iowa, Penn State, Ohio State, Illinois and Indiana. You read it here first...
Chris R (Colorado)
Hello Mr. Cook: Boise St. returns 21 starters, finished 2009 unbeaten and likely #2 ranked, also plays Virginia Tech and Oregon State next year. Dare I say #1 preseason?
Beano Cook (3:30 PM)
No. I don't think so. They are smart to play those teams, and Virginia Tech-Boise State will be a huge game. It is amazing how good Boise State is considering the state is known more for good potatoes than football players.
What would you think of and Oklahoma and Nebraska big 12 title next year?
Beano Cook (3:31 PM)
Good chance. Don't forget Texas. Nebraska should be favored in its division, and I would go with Oklahoma or Texas as the Big 12 title game opponent.
J.B. (Dunmore, PA)
Mr. Cook: Just wanted to thank you for the chat time this season. You have always been informative and entertaining. I hope you have good health for this coming year and that we are back here talking college football again next season, which I hope ends on a good note for Coach Paterno. God bless.
Beano Cook (3:32 PM)
Thank you very much. I will be back next week to do a chat wrapping up the bowls and looking ahead. As usual, I will make my first prediction on which two teams will play for the national title.
Did you think Braylon Edwards was taking a shot at Michigan when he said Lloyd Carr's Michigan on TV?
Beano Cook (3:33 PM)
I think that is obvious. I heard about it and it is obvious that was a shot.
Chris Fiegler (Latham,NY)
Do you think in the future that there will be a College Football Bowl Game at the New Meadowlands Stadium?
Beano Cook (3:34 PM)
Let's hope not. New York City, or more accurately New Jersey, in December is not a place for a college football bowl game.
Teddy (New York)
Where was your favorite place to see a game over the years?
Beano Cook (3:35 PM)
I always liked the third weekend in October at West Point. I also loved games at the Horseshoe at Ohio State.
Cosmo (Anytown, USA)
How crazy is it that there are kids that will soon graduate COLLEGE that were not alive the last time the mighty Fighting Irish won a National Championship?
Beano Cook (3:37 PM)
Great observation. The last time was in Arizona, beating Major Harris and West Virginia. If they were alive, they are quite young. It is hard to believe that their last title came all the way back in 1988. Don't give me academics as an excuse.
Nick G. (Charleston, SC)
To add more fuel to the "top conference" fire, do you suppose a door will ever open to an All Big 10 vs. All SEC (with rotating conferneces each year) type of game after the season, as opposed to the lame Senior Bowl games that no one watches anyway?
Beano Cook (3:37 PM)
No, I don't see that happening to be honest.
Beano, do you really think the Big Ten can get away with not keeping MI and OSU in the same division. That could cause a lot of problems. It would be terrible if they were playing the last game of the year, just to play a week later in the champ game
Beano Cook (3:38 PM)
They would play each other, like the SEC and Big 12, where you play one team every year in the SEC. Alabama and Tennessee are in different divisions and they play every year.
Iowa looked great last night and they are returning a ton of starters. Do you see them in the top 5 preseason next year?
Beano Cook (3:39 PM)
No. Not to take away from what they did this season or last night, I still would say not in the top 5.
Did you happen to catch Chris Myers question to Ricky Stanzi after the game and his response? Awkward.
Beano Cook (3:40 PM)
I did not see it. I was watching a rerun of Seinfeld.
Father Time (Earth)
Beano, I missed you last week. What team will surprise everyone next season?
Beano Cook (3:40 PM)
Beano Cook (3:41 PM)
I say that if Ryan Mallett comes back at quarterback.
Beano,How well do you think Charlie Strong will do at Louisville and, if he succeeds, how long do you think they can keep him?
Beano Cook (3:42 PM)
I think he will do well there. It is hard to answer the second part of the question because I do not know.
God forbid a SEC school play a bowl out of the south and have to, dare I say it, play in weather colder than 60 degrees.
Beano Cook (3:43 PM)
You look at the BCS bowls...what is your complaint? They are not going to have a bowl game outdoors in Wisconsin or Michigan...Look, the SEC is the toughest conference in college football. If you don't agree, you just don't get it and should try another sport.
John (Bedford, MA)
Mr. Cook, what your impression of Penn State's play, especially defensively, in the Cap One Bowl? Which players stood out? Thank you.
Beano Cook (3:46 PM)
I thought the Penn State-LSU game was an outstanding one. The last drive for the winning field goal was excellent. In the last two years, Penn State has put up pretty impressive numbers, getting double-digit wins. They are 21-5 over two seasons and that is pretty good. Remember, they came within one game of playing for the national title last year. Do you think Joe Paterno will ever forget that Iowa game? I will say he never will. Coaches remember losses for a much longer time that they do great wins.
So if TT didn't want to pay Leach that much money why'd they do it? It's not like he wasn't earning it based on the teams results. Last I checked Leach wasn't holding a gun to the chancellor's head.
Beano Cook (3:47 PM)
I agree with what you are saying. Texas Tech's administration doesn't look too good in this whole episode.
Jason (Akron, OH)
perfect response to Nate from Madison. If you don't think the SEC is the toughest, you don't watch their games.
Beano Cook (3:48 PM)
OK, I agree with that one too.
Do you think Bobby envisoned the whole admin when he stuck that spear in the ground?
Beano Cook (3:49 PM)
I prefer not to answer that one. That should give you a clue of what I think.
Beano Cook (3:50 PM)
The perfect ticket for college football in 2010 is Bobby Bowden and Lou Holtz together on TV in some capacity.
Beano Cook (3:51 PM)
To make it clear, he should join Holtz and Mark May as analysts together. It would be to emost entertaining trio since the Marx Brothers.
Al Gore (Washington)
Beano, if we don't reduce our dependency on fossil fuels and starting using more green technology, NY and NJ will be perfect places for Bowl Games. Global Warming!!!
Beano Cook (3:52 PM)
Not too warm right now.
Beano Cook (3:52 PM)
That is if the Atlantic Ocean doesn't flood New York.
Beano, please tell me that Bama will run over Texas. If not, why not?
Beano Cook (3:54 PM)
OK, I might as well make my pick now. Alabama 24, Texas 23. It should be a classic game and I am looking forward to it. Ivan Maisel picked 'Bama to win, 20-17. We will find out tomorrow night on ABC! I guarantee you the game will be more entertaining than this year's Super Bowl. Thanks for your questions, see you next week at 3 pm ET to wrap up the season and make my first prediction for the 2010 season.
