Chris Mortensen (11:04 AM)
Good morning. Who's going to win Sunday? And what else?
Where do you see Tim Tebow going in the NFL Draft? What kind of career does he have if he changes his throwing motion?
Chris Mortensen (11:06 AM)
It's very, very difficult to change one's throwing motion but possible (see Aaron Rodgers). In Tim's case, most NFL people say he's got to shorten and quicken his release. If he can do that and throw with accuracy, then he has a chance to have a a good NFL career. I believe Tim will go in the first round. I can't tell you where. Many others I respect say I am crazy.
Andrew (Kempten, Germany)
Do you think that CJ Spiller will be a bust?
Chris Mortensen (11:06 AM)
No way. CJ Spiller has a chance to be an impact player from the get-go. He is explosive, versatile and I hear very good things about his character.
I was very impressed withthe way Reggie Bush ran the ball against the Cards this past weekend. He ran through players, moved north and south. Do you think he noticed the difference and think he will bring that level of intesity each game?
Chris Mortensen (11:08 AM)
I spoke to a wise NFL man about this yesterday (Tuesday) and he said those smaller quick guys truly benefit from some extra rest. I don't think Reggie got too beat up last week so he should be sharp again vs. Vikings. And if the Saints beat the Vikings, guess what? Bush would get an extra week of rest before the Super Bowl.
Hey Mort----Why don't some ESPN analyst's like Hoge and Dilfer admit publicly they messed up their predictions and assessments about the Vikes? I think us fans would respect them more.
Chris Mortensen (11:09 AM)
I haven't paid attention to everything they've said but usually they will admit they're wrong. I know I admit I was wrong about Brett Favre this year.
What are the chances the Rams pass on Suh for Clausen and he falls to my Lions?? Can we get that fortunate after nearly 2 decades of hell?
Chris Mortensen (11:12 AM)
Some teams doubt that Clausen will be the first quarterback or that any of the QBs will be rated worthy of the No. 1 pick. But this is unique because both Clausen and Sam Bradford are coming off injuries. They have a chance to show what they're about, beyond the games they've already put on tape. Two decades of hell? Did you forget the Super Bowls in the middle of that?
Mort I valued your opinion long before twitter or Adam Scheffler showed up...So what's with the ESPN pushing you guys to "act like you're on the phone/computer" right before your segment...seems a bit corny/fake.
Chris Mortensen (11:15 AM)
yeah, we talk about it, laugh a little, too. Actually, this past week, I didn't even know they were taping me while I WAS on the phone. And we are working frequently when you watch the other guys on the other set. Those are called teases or "bumps."
Chad Henne - Buy, Sell or Hold? I am a strong buyer!
Chris Mortensen (11:17 AM)
Buy but I have to admit I believe they have a very viable insurance policy with Tyler Thigpen.
Thanks Mort---Anyway...Do you see Favre having more time to pass and playfake given the Saint's D-Line is not as quick as the Dallas D-line? Not saying they are worse, just not as quick.
Chris Mortensen (11:19 AM)
I think Favre probably gets a little less time because the Saints do create some havoc and the crowd noise will work against the Vikings' O-line. I believe Adrian Peterson has to be more of a factor this week and the defense can't let the Saints jump out in front too quickly.
I know the Jets love to blitz. Is it a smart thing to do against the Colts and Peyton Manning in particular? Peyton is so good at seeing it coming and getting rid of the ball. Won't all of these blitz packages eventually leave the Jets open to big play after big play?
Chris Mortensen (11:20 AM)
As Tedy Bruschi just said on TV, you have to give Manning different looks each time you play him. Tedy doesn't believe the Jets can play it the same way as last time. That's the best chess match of the weekend - Peyton Manning vs. Rex Ryan & the Jets.
Mort, there is no doubt that the Ravens need to revamp their Wide Receiver Core. Being one of the top 8 teams, I know that they will be limited on how they can approach free agency. Do you see a trade for someone like Marshall or Boldin? Or do you think a scenario of signing Terrell Owens for a year and drafting a WR looks likely??
Chris Mortensen (11:22 AM)
I can see a trade for either Boldin or Marshall because the price shouldn't be as prohibtive from a draft pick perspective. I don't think so on TO; maybe a WR is drafted, too, but there are some defensive holes (believe it or not) that need to be addressed in the draft.
Do the Redskins take a QB with the 4th overall pick or look to another position like offensive line?
Chris Mortensen (11:24 AM)
I believe if Bradford or Clausen sells themselves well, the Redskins will take a QB. If not, then an O-lineman or a trade back. Probably a QB in first or second round but I do expect Jason Campbell to be around at least one more year.
Wow...I think the Bills really settled on Gailey...I think this is a dreadful hire for both the fans and the organization.....your thoughts? Any idea how much they are paying this guy given nobody else seemed to want him?
Chris Mortensen (11:26 AM)
I don't believe this is a dreadful hire. If Mr. Wilson and others will leave Buddy Nix and Chan Gailey alone, I think it can work. Since Nix wanted someone with head coaching experience and on the offensive side, Gailey has worthy qualifications.
Should the niners put thier first and second together for Berry? He kinda reminds me of someone we once had. Where could they go with both firsts
Chris Mortensen (11:27 AM)
That's a high price for a safety, especially when you consider all the needs. But he is a heck of a player.
Matt (San Diego)
Morty, please tell me that you are smarter than others and believe the Vikes are overall a better team than the Saints and will win this weekend! Much better defense (no contest) and better Special Teams. The Vikes offense is every bit explosive as the Saints if not more due to we have AP! Thanks for your response.
Chris Mortensen (11:30 AM)
Sold! Except that the game is in New Orleans. Saints secondary is better than Vikes. As you know, the key will be a very good Saints O-line vs. the Vikings D-line. The Vikes probably have the overall edge in talent and there may be some injury issues with Shockey and Meachem for the Saints. I don't know who's going to win.
If the Vikings go onto win the SB, I believe Brett will actually retire this time around. But that leaves the Vikes where? What do they do for next season at QB?
Chris Mortensen (11:35 AM)
Under a scenario you presented, I think they go with Tavaris Jackson or see if they can pry Donovan McNabb loose from the Eagles.
The Pats HAVE to use one of their 3 second round picks on a back, right? Dwyer, McKnight, Matthews, Gerhart... someone like that.
Chris Mortensen (11:37 AM)
They have to address defense, maybe some O-line, perhaps a WR and a RB, yes.
Katelyn (Syracuse, NY)
Any chance Buffalo makes a play for Vick or McNabb? I know Reid said McNabb is their guy, but I am sure they will listen to offers and McNabb is still loved in NY for his days at Syracuse.
Chris Mortensen (11:38 AM)
Knowing Gailey, he's going to prefer a QB with some degree of athleticism so I wouldn't rule out those guys.
Mort, what the heck is Al Davis doing? Interviewing assistant coaches before deciding on keeping Cable? What do you think his goal is and who do you think he "wants" to hire if he lets Cable go? Thanks and God bless.
Chris Mortensen (11:40 AM)
This is SOP - standard operating procedure with Al. He's done it a lot in the past. If he fires Cable, then I would guess you're looking at the offensive guys like Trestman, Fassel, Gilbride, Hue Jackson...who knows?
will the jets get any sacks on manning and that stingy colts o-line?
Chris Mortensen (11:43 AM)
Maybe not the sacks, but making him move, get out of position, some hits, yes.
Katelyn (Syracuse, NY)
If Buffalo goes QB at some point in the draft the guy is going to have to have some mobility due to the o-line weakness. Not including Tebow, who is the best mobile QB in the draft?
Chris Mortensen (11:44 AM)
Colt McCoy has more mobility than Tebow but is smaller and has questions about arm from some NFL scouts.
What is the ideal SB matchup as far as headlines/story lines go?
Dolphins at #12: Dez Bryant or Rolando McClain?
Chris Mortensen (11:49 AM)
First that Super Bowl "headlines" answer: Favre vs. Manning. Now on the Dolphins' question, both make sense. Dolphins have big need at ILB and McClain comes from similar scheme with Nick Saban. Bryant is a big, gifted receiver. It would be nice for Dolphins if both were still on the board then.
Mort, some Skins fans are afraid that Snyder will still be pulling the strings behind the scenes, my take is there's no way Shanahan would have come to DC unless he was 100% sure he would be running the show with Allen, what do you think?
Chris Mortensen (11:50 AM)
Snyder will not be pulling the strings. He did not pull them with Gibbs, other than to say, "What do you need?" That's what he'll do here.
Mike (San Diego)
Mort-Any chance that Early Doucet has supplanted Steve Breaston as the Cardinals 3rd reciever(maybe #2 if Boldin goes)? He looked good in the playoffs.
Chris Mortensen (11:51 AM)
I think the Cardinals are committed to the 3 WR look so it was obvious they are in good hands with Fitzgrald, Breaston and Doucet no matter how you cut it with Boldin presumably on his way out.
Liam (Pleasanton, California)
Why do you think Norv Turner is getting such a long leash when AJ Smith fired Marty after his playoff collapse? If Marty had stayed, do you think he could have gotten better results? Would Brees still be around?
Chris Mortensen (11:54 AM)
AJ and Marty had a personality clash and the owner chose the GM over the coach. I'm on the record I thought it was ridiculous that Marty was fired but I did not criticize the hiring of Norv. Would Brees still be around? Given the seriousness and timing of his shoulder injury - and it was remarkable serious - I think the same result would have been Brees leaving and Rivers taking over.
Pete Carroll takes over in Seattle. I think Matt Leinhart might be, but I know reggie bush, lendale white and Dwayne Jarret are all free agents. Any chance of reuniting?
Chris Mortensen (11:55 AM)
I'm sure we'll see some of that with former USC guys but none of those guys are scheduled to be free agents.
how does Shaub go over Big Ben in replacing Brady for the Pro Bowl? am i missing something?
Chris Mortensen (11:57 AM)
Maybe that Schaub statistically had the best season and the Steelers lost some bad games during a critical stretch of voting? I can't argue with it even though Ben is certainly worthy and may have to step in, too, if Manning goes to the Super Bowl.
Brandon (Milwaukee, WI)
Should the Bears try to interview Mike Nolan before he ends up in Miami?
Chris Mortensen (11:58 AM)
Hey Mort.. For the past 3 seasons the Chargers have been a heavy pick for the SB in the beginning of the season.. But still havent made it.. Do you think that will happen next season..?
Chris Mortensen (11:59 AM)
I think you're exaggerating a "heavy pick" for the Super Bowl. One of five or six teams you had to like with their chances. Next season? I expect them to be in the race. That's all.
Is the saints defense able to stop a high powered offense like the vikings?
Chris Mortensen (12:00 PM)
The key with the Saints defense is their ability to create turnovers. They have a knack for it. The Vikings have to avoid the fumbles and interceptions.
Mort, if you covered this I apologize but how do you see the Josh Cribbs situation in Cleveland playing out?
Chris Mortensen (12:02 PM)
I see Cribbs playing with the Browns in 2010, probably with a new contract.
can u explain restrictions for teams still playing on signing UFAs this spring??? Mike & Mike brought it up this week but didn't explain it.
Chris Mortensen (12:03 PM)
The final eight teams that played this past weekend can only sign an unrestricted free agent if they lose one for similar value.
Is LT a foregone conclusion in San Diego? Does that mean they should be looking for a RB in the draft or free agency?
Chris Mortensen (12:04 PM)
I didn't consider it a foregone conclusion going into Sunday but it sure felt like one afterwards. Regardless, the Chargers will be looking for a young every-down running back...maybe they can find a Shonn Greene, like the Jets did.
I agree with you on the Jets having to show different looks, but this is still a Rex Ryan defense and Manning has owned Rex Ryan's defenses for a long time. Any thoughts?
Chris Mortensen (12:06 PM)
Manning has had some nice days against Rex's defense. Some of those days weren't comfortable, though.
Coach Tuesday (NYC)
Mort: an anoymous source inside the Bills' organization swears that ESPN's report is wrong, and that it wasn't Ralph Wilson who nixed Marty but someone else (most likely Buddy Nix). Care to weigh in?
Chris Mortensen (12:07 PM)
I didn't know ESPN reported that Ralph Wilson nixed Marty Schottenheimer. I just know they decided they would not pursue Marty even though Marty was very interested.
Mort, one other Browns question. Any chance of drafting a QB in the first round if Holmgren isn't sold on Brady Quinn?
Chris Mortensen (12:09 PM)
I kind of doubt it, considering Holmgren's success has been with Joe Montana (3rd rounder), Brett Favre (2nd rounder, via trade), Matt Hasselbeck (6th rounder).
Mike (San Diego)
Is there a chance that CJ Spiller could be a Chris Johnson type player? He looks so explosive in games.
Chris Mortensen (12:09 PM)
Yup. Spiller did suffer a few more injuries in college but played through them the best he could.
why is quarterbacks greatness determined by superbowl rings? it is still a team game, quaterbacks arent the only ones who play in the game.
Chris Mortensen (12:11 PM)
You are right. Dan Marino was good enough to win six Super Bowls but his defenses weren't up to it. We forget it's a team game.
Chris Mortensen (12:12 PM)
Gotta run and get better prepared for the weekend. Thanks for the time. Catch up with me on Twitter.com @mortreport. ESPN Radio on Friday night. Sunday NFL Countdown at 11 a.m. ET, SportsCenters, NFL Lives, etc. God Bless!
