Chuck Bartowski (Burbank)
I love your show on ESPN! Give me your Elite Eight "Sleepers" (you know, teams that aren't projected to be a top 8 team) as of right now.
Andy Katz (11:04 AM)
Hmmmm. Let's say out of the A-10: Temple; BYU (MWC); Kansas State (Big 12); Vandy (SEC), Gonzaga (WCC).
Jazzy (Albuqerque )
What up Andy! Come tourney time where do you see my Lobos getting seeded?
Andy Katz (11:05 AM)
Not sure yet. Not sure but I have a feeling UNM could end up in a 7-10 or 8-9 game.
is Cuse ranked 4 and KY 3 because of it's narrow win over Depaul? If so how about all of KY's narrow wins?
Andy Katz (11:07 AM)
I look at who played the best basketball last week. Syracuse didn't play well in the first 30 minutes against DePaul but found a way to win in the final 10. So, for last week, I would have put Kentucky behind Syracuse since the Orange won twice and Kentucky split the week.
Chad W. (High Point)
As of today....Do you have North Carolina making the tourney?
Andy Katz (11:08 AM)
It's hard to put them in today. But the good news is the Tar Heels have plenty of opportunities in the next few weeks. I'm not sold they can win on the road at Virginia Tech, Wake or Maryland. But the opportunities exist. The bottom line is the Tar Heels' guards aren't as talented as projected. It happens. And the frontline has been been dealing with injuries and battling inconsistent play.
So, we all see the latest poll results, with Kansas in the top slot, but who would be the first overall seed according to the criteria important to the selection committee? Who will be #1 by the end of the year?
Andy Katz (11:10 AM)
Kansas. I just don't see the Jayhawks losing more than maybe one more time in the regular season. I don't think that will be the case with Kentucky, Syracuse, Michigan State and Villanova.
Evan Turner is player of the year and a far better player than John Wall. Anybody can look good with a team full of pros on the squad. Look at 05 Carolina. Not much noise from any of those players in the NBA but in college they all excelled. Put John Wall on Ohio State and I doubt he would have them winning like Turner does.
Andy Katz (11:12 AM)
It will be an interesting vote. I'd say the competition is pretty close right now. I'm not sure who I would vote for if I had to today.
Tom (Northern VA)
Andy-Give me your All-ACC team right now? Landesburg has to be on there, don't you think?
Andy Katz (11:14 AM)
Landesberg, UVAScheyer, DukeVasquez, MDLawal, GTechBooker, Clemson
David (Washington DC)
Why do you hate Villanova?
Andy Katz (11:19 AM)
I find this somewhat comical. Why would I hate Villanova if I have the 'Cats in the top five? Yes, originally I thought West Virginia would beat out Villanova by two games. But I had 'Nova second. I was wrong on that one. Maybe I'll be wrong on Syracuse beating out Villanova by a game. But 'Nova still has the personnel to get to the Final Four but I would lean slightly toward Syracuse in the frontcourt. I have given plenty of love to Scottie Reynolds on various platforms. So I would have to say this is completely misdirected. By the way, I don't "hate" any team, or anybody.
Matt (Syracuse )
Andy, with Siena having the longest winning streak and can pull of 6 straight more to end the regular season do you think Siena has a chance to get an at large bid without winning the MAAC tourney?
Andy Katz (11:22 AM)
To have a chance the Saints will have to beat Butler.
Andy, The last three games Jimmer Fredette has gone off and averaged over 30 ppg while he also leads the MWC in assists. What does he need to do to get some All-American love?
Andy Katz (11:27 AM)
Well, he's the frontrunner for MWC player of the year. I would be surprised if he's not at least on one of the all-American teams.
Peter (Madeline Island)
What are the Badgers going to have to key in on tonight to knock off Sparty in Madison?
Andy Katz (11:29 AM)
Rebound. The Badgers must rebound against Sparty. The atmosphere should be a classic Kohl game.
How can a team with only 1 top 50 win (if Siena beats Butler) get in the tourney? That would tell teams to schedule some cupcakes to pad the win total.
Andy Katz (11:31 AM)
The question was if Siena were to run the table and then lose in the conference tournament title. If htat happens then the Saints would be in the mix. I would hardly say playing St. John's, Georgia Tech, Northern Iowa is hardly cupcakes, either.
What is your biggest shocker this year of these two choices? Kentucky losing a game, or Cornell making the top 25?
Andy Katz (11:32 AM)
Neither.I'm not surprised that either occured. I was sure Kentucky would lose at least one game. After I saw Cornell play Kansas on television I was convinced that the Big Red was talented enough to be ranked.
Michael (Evansville, IN))
Andy I noted in your blog post about Charlotte that you don't think Dayton has the resume' for an at large. I'd suggest that this year's bubble so far is EXTREMELY weak and that Dayton compares pretty favorably to other bubble comparators. Dayton has 2 RPI top 50 wins and has 4 more chances on the schedule. Here are some other buble teams' Top 50 records: California (0-4) (with no opportunity for a top 50 win left on their schedule); Texas Tech (0-7); Mississippi (1-3); Maryland (1-5); Louisville (2-6). I hope you don't have any of those teams in ahead of Dayton, because I don't see how the committee could justify it.
Andy Katz (11:39 AM)
I'd say right now if Maryland were to stay in the top three in the ACC the Terps will be ahead of Dayton. For that to occur the Terps will get more quality wins. Dayton isn't done yet. But losses like at St. Joe's don't help the Flyers' cause. Separation is occurring in the A-10 and the Flyers are on the wrong side of the top group right now. That can change quickly in the coming weeks.
Jay (Bloomington, IN)
Indiana has improved a lot this year from last. Do you think it is unfair to expect at least an NIT berth for the Hoosiers next year? Is that asking too much?
Andy Katz (11:43 AM)
No I wouldn't say that's unfair. Indiana can certainly make a play for an NIT bid.
Andy- Do you see Marquette getting into the tourney? With alot of close losses, and the schedule getting much softer, what are the odds they end up dancing?
Andy Katz (11:43 AM)
Got to keep winning. The wins over Georgetown at home and at Connecticut help but the Golden Eagles need more.
guinness (New York)
I think the talent is UNC's backcourt is there but what's making UNC lose games is mental errors. The kids keep making mistakes, whether it be trying to be too fancy or turning the ball over way too many times. How does Roy Williams fix this problem?!?
Andy Katz (11:44 AM)
I agree the decision making is not going well in late-game situations, let alone earlier when the game is not in jeopardy. How do you fix it? Well, if the players can't figure out the right decisions then ultimatley they will be replaced.
andy,im curious who do you have in your final four?
Andy Katz (11:45 AM)
The candidates are:KentuckyKansasTexasMichigan StateVillanovaSyracusePurdueI'm more likely to lean toward Kentucky, Kansas, Michigan State and Syracuse. That could change here soon but that's what I'm feeling right now.
Matt (Bethlehem, PA)
Who has been your biggest disappointment to this point in the season?
Andy Katz (11:49 AM)
I originally had Oklahoma and Michigan topping this list. But now I would have to put North Carolina in the first slot. I wasn't as high on Connecticut so the Huskies' inconsistent play doesn't surprise me.
Best non-Big 6 conference?
Andy Katz (11:51 AM)
Mountain West over A-10. The bottom of the A-10 is still drek. I would take going to Clune Arena at Air Force over Rose Hill at Fordham as a tougher road game.
hey andy.have you heard anything recently regarding the ncaa opting out of its contract with cbs, opening the bidding to other networks which might push the tourney to add teams (65+)???
Andy Katz (11:57 AM)
Way too early. There is a process to this that will involve the conference commissioners, the NCAA board of directors and the NCAA hierarchy. Is it true that the NCAA has sent out queries to all interested broadcast partners about bidding for it and what they might want to see in a new tourney? Yes. Is there any decision? Not even close. The conference commissioners would likely take the given money now of the next three years in the final time of the CBS deal then opt out. But there are a number of people who will decide on this before there is any change. The NCAA didn't decide on 68 or 96. The choice was given to the broadcast partners to see what they would do if given the rights. This is a fluid process. And CBS is still the rights holder. Nothing has changed.
Andy Katz (11:57 AM)
Thanks for the questions this week.
