Ted Miller (1:01 PM)
Howdy... staking out USC and NCAA meet and greet. Grand fun.Shoot.
Ted, love your insight and your telling the TRUTH (i.e. PAC-10 versus SEC). If USC had no knowledge of the Bush situation why would they have to vacate wins as most people are predicting will be the minimum they get? I am sure you recall that with the OU Bomar incident the NCAA reversed their initial decision of vacating wins for using ineligible players because it was unfair to the other players AND the OU situation even included BOOSTERS? Thanks in advance for answering my question!
Ted Miller (1:04 PM)
Don't know if I tell the "truth." I sometimes try to enlarge perspective.Every case is different. USC could lose wins because when Bush allegedly accepted extra benefits he became ineligible. And trust me... USC would rather get an "*" in the record book rather than have the future damaged with scholarship and post-season hits. We'll have to wait on what the NCAA ultimately finds.
Sweatervested1 (Titan, Saturn)
Ted, Good day to you sir! Why have my comments been getting deleted on your blog? I don't use bad words, and I always have something kind to say about all teams. Is this friendship, Ted?
Ted Miller (1:05 PM)
Titan!I don't oversee the comment section. I always appreciate your special contribution. I have never deleted a comment.
Hi Ted, Do you like the Dawgs chances this yr at BYU and at home v Neb?
Ted Miller (1:07 PM)
Would I pick them right now? Maybe not to win both. At BYU is tough, though the Cougars take some personnel hits. And Nebraska might be a top-10 team. If the UW figures some stuff out on D, it could win those games and be a factor in the Pac-10.
I've seen Dennis Erickson's name of the list of coaches on the hot seat by some reporters. What is your assessment?
Ted Miller (1:08 PM)
I'd say his seat is warm, not hot. After a fast start, the Sun Devils have posted two disappointing seasons under Erickson. Things need to pick up this year, though most folks see ASU falling into the bottom half of the conference. But if you look at the roster, it looks like a nice perk could happen in 2011. I'd advise patience.
Jim (Torrance CA)
Now that USC's dominance of Pac-10 football appears over, do you think that makes it even more difficult for a Pac-10 team to make it to the BCS championship game?
Ted Miller (1:11 PM)
Over? Not sure about that. USC has officially been challenged, but I wouldn't write them off. As for the BCS title game: it's the same deal.Win all your games. If USC fall, I'd expect a new Pac-10 team to enter the title hunt. Keep in mind, the two years before USC broke through in 2002, the Pac-10 had a national title contender (Washington and the Oregon).
DO YOU THINK OREGON WILL BE ABLE TO KEEP LAMICHEAL ON THE TEAM AND NOT SUSPENDED FOR ANY GAMES? IF SO DO THEY HAVE A BCS TITLE SHOT?
Ted Miller (1:14 PM)
James isn't irreplaceable. Recall he only became a star because LeGarrette Blount went down. The Ducks have good talent at RB and an impressive group coming in with this year's recruiting class. As for James arrest, we've heard the initial reports and charges. Now we have to see how it plays out. Will Kelly kick him off the team? If James is guilty, I'd guess he might, though keep in mind James was charged only with misdemeanors.
Mike (Iowa City)
TED! Iowa the best team in Big Ten going into the new season?
Ted Miller (1:14 PM)
Sorry Mike... Ohio State is LOADED. Bucks might make another NC run.
Hayden (New Haven)
Why does everyone act as if the sky is falling at Oregon? As far as I know, there was only one real crime committed by a UO football player, and one who was was involved in a fight (which isn't necessarily that irregular for a large state school. Everything else is alleged, and neither have particularly compelling initial evidence suggesting they are true. Isn't it kind of pathetic people instantly assume guilt and then use these fallacious conclusions to describe the football program as out of control?
Ted Miller (1:17 PM)
It's the ole "smoke and fire" deal. Lots of stuff happening at one time. It's not good PR for the program. Things might work out in the end. Or things could end up bad. We shall see. You would think that Kelly is going to give his team a get-tough policy.
The PAC-10 seems to be serious about expansion this time. Do you think CU and Utah are the likely targets or would they look for bigger game since the TX to the Big 10 rumors are out there? Also just go to 12 or go big for 14 -16 teams?
Ted Miller (1:19 PM)
My take for a while has been Colorado and Utah... if the Pac-10 could get Texas, it would jump at that... Texas is in a nice position. Lots of love for the Horns out there. I think 12 teams makes sense, but it who knows? Maybe new commish Larry Scott has a grand idea about a super-conference. Not sure how that would go over with stodgy Pac-10 presidents, though.
James (Orange County)
How do you think Oregon will do traveling to Knoxville next fall? Cal was embarrassed a few years ago when they came in ranked in the top 15.
Ted Miller (1:21 PM)
I've thought about that. That's a big reason I picked Tennessee to beat UCLA this year.. and was wrong. You can't prepare for the atmosphere in Neyland. It's just awesome (in the real sense of the word). But the Vols are going to be down in 2010. Oregon is a lot more talented. Unless the Ducks throw up on themselves, they should be OK.
J T (B'ham)
Is the big 10 talk of adding teams the main driving force behind the Pac 10 doing the same?
Ted Miller (1:23 PM)
Pac-10 folks won't say that but it's certainly part of it... the Pac-10 is in danger of falling behind. The conference doesn't want expansion but it may have to in order to remain competitive.
Mike (Iowa City)
what was a smarter move? pete carroll going to Seahawks or Kiffin going to USC?
Ted Miller (1:24 PM)
Kiffin to USC. Carroll's got a big rebuilding job in Seattle. But I think both moves represent what Kiffin and Carroll wanted. Carroll wanted another shot at the NFL so he can re-write that previous failure, while Kiffin got his dream job.
Eric (Fort Worth)
Give us your prediction of the oregon state vs boise, tcu games.
Ted Miller (1:25 PM)
Tough... both on the road against top-10 teams. I won't pick the invididual games, but I'm going to throw out that the Beavers get a split...they have a lot coming back next year, though a new QB is a big question mark.
Who do you think Cal goes after for DC to replace Gregory?
Ted Miller (1:28 PM)
another chatter says it's Clancy Pendergast... I'll check when the chat ends.... former AZ cards DC.
CMoney (San Francisco)
Ted - Do you see Kevin Prince taking a good step forward in year 3 of Norm Chow's offense? or will his production be substantially hindered by questionable O-line play?
Ted Miller (1:29 PM)
Short answer, yes.And the Bruins need him to because the defense is rebuilding. Of course, Prince's supporting cast also needs to step up.
Do you think Norm Chow might be over rated or possibley needs great talent to do something special?
Ted Miller (1:30 PM)
No.Chow's career speaks for itself.Has he lived up to his reputation in two years at UCLA? Not yet. So it's fair to say he's due.
Who do you see as being the breakout tailback at USC this year? I have a strong feeling that USC will surprise a lot of people this year. USC was a team in need of a change. Pete Carroll, as much as I love the guy, his act was getting a little too old and they really have been off on recruiting the last couple of seasons; targeting the 5 star player instead of a meats and potatoes guy that will bust his rear-end. What do you think?
Ted Miller (1:33 PM)
The RB coach Todd McNair just walked in front of me... maybe I should ask him?My guess is Bradford gets a shot to be the primary guy... but Gable will get back into the picture... and I like Curtis McNeil, too.
Bernard (San Antonio)
I was suprised to see how low Kevin Thomas and Josh Pinkard are rated in upcoming draft. Should they have left prior to the 2009 season.
Ted Miller (1:34 PM)
We'll see... sometimes guys are rated low by draft guys but end up getting drafted earlier than expected... Pinkard has to overcome a long history of injuries.
What are the chances Bill Moos will the next Cougar AD? Also, how do you see it panning out for them>
Ted Miller (1:35 PM)
It would be a great hire... Moos did an outstanding job at Oregon. It's up to Moos. He's got easy money coming from the Ducks with his buyout. Will he sacrifice that to go to his alma mater.
mikey (south bend)
how do you think Notre Dame will do with new coach Brian kelley
Ted Miller (1:36 PM)
I think Kelly awakens the echoes. Think he's a great coach and a good fit for the program.
Hayden (Logan, Utah)
Is the Mtn West a stronger conference than the Pac-10? im starting to think so
Ted Miller (1:37 PM)
no. but the MWC has some good teams that can consistently compete with the Pac-10.
Saam (Los Angeles, CA)
Is it just me or do you also find it to be asinine for the NCAA to TRY to erase history by forcing teams to vacate wins/relinquish championships and act like the games/accomplishments never happened? It is like trying to abort a baby that is already born and living in the world. Unfortunately for the NCAA, they don't have a time machine or that MIB flashstick. What happened in the past can't be undone. Shouldn't they just give future punishments such as reducing scholarships and no postseason?
Ted Miller (1:40 PM)
it's pretty embarrassing to have past glory erased, even if it is symbolic. But, yes, penalties that affect the present and future are more painful. IF the NCAA finds USC guilty of serious violations, they'll go after both... if not, they might just go after the past.
What's your guess on what the NCAA will do to USC? Slap on the wrist? or will they come down hard? Any potential recruiting impact for the rest of the conference? I personally think nothing is going to come of this. Nothing important anyway.
Ted Miller (1:41 PM)
Middle ground: They will do something, but it won't be crippling. My guess is it will be significantly less than Alabama got a few years back.
Is Colorado the number one expansion target of the PAC 10? When all is said and done who do you see them adding?
Ted Miller (1:42 PM)
Well, Texas is the plum everyone wants. But, realistically, Colorado is the best catch -- a good fit in myriad ways.
Randy (State College, PA)
Ted, what are the chances that the ACC could actually get two teams into BCS games for once? With question marks at Florida and Penn State (I'm not sold on Iowa either), it would seem to be the conference's best shot in some time...
Ted Miller (1:44 PM)
V-Tech, FSU, UNC, G-Tech, Miami...there are some rising teams there. It would really help the ACC if Jimbo restores the FSU glory. And you're right: There seems like there will be an opportunity to break through next year. Lots of "top dogs" across the BCS conferences but questions at No.2.
Ryan (Medford OR)
Why do you answer so many non pac-10 questions? I have sent 2 Pac-10 questions you haven't answered but you answer ND questions *which had a chat all by themseves yesterday* and ACCC questions.
Ted Miller (1:45 PM)
Does this count? Sorry... it's mostly luck of the draw. I take the question at the top of my page... too many to read through each one.
CMoney (San Francisco)
Dark horse to win the conference?
Ted Miller (1:45 PM)
Ted, thanks for being a believer of Mike Stoops and the Arizona football team in the last two years...until this Spring, when you ranked the Cats 7th in the Pac-10? With a favorable home schedule, do you think AZ has a shot to win the conference next Fall?
Ted Miller (1:47 PM)
Those rankings didn't take account of schedules. They were all about right now. And right now, I see holes on defense. After I see the Wildcats this spring, maybe those holes won't look so gaping.
Ted Miller (1:48 PM)
And keep in mind that the middle of the Pac-10 is very crowded... UCLA? Arizona? Washington? California?Stanford? it's hard to set a pecking order.
Bruce (Virginia Beach)
Paul Wulff...doing an under-appreciated job in rebuilding the Cougs. What do you see as a reasonable benchmark for the coming season?
Ted Miller (1:50 PM)
Three wins is about where I see things. Don't know if that will be enough for a new AD. If he gets four wins, I think he would be secure. And I do think Wulff has done some good things... but wins are what matter to fans. And new ADs.
is ohio state goood
Ted Miller (1:50 PM)
Ted, if the Pac-10 expands, when do you expect it to occur? Within 6-12 months?
Ted Miller (1:51 PM)
We may get an announcement, but it's possible it will take more than a year (or two) to establish the new configurations.
Teddy, what are the chances the USC probe brings out enough dirt to keep Henderson from signing?
Ted Miller (1:52 PM)
Decent... but it seems like he wants to go to USC... so unless the penalties will knock the Trojans out of the spotlight, I think he'll end up in LA.
Josh (Lincoln, NE)
I'm torn on Colorado leaving. On the one hand, they're an easy win. On the other, no one likes them.
Ted Miller (1:53 PM)
You can't tell me you don't like road tripping to Boulder...And I'm glad to see a 'Husker chime in.. I'd always heard the rivalry was a bit one-sided.
bryan (tulsa ok)
why does everyone critic Matt Barkley so hard? he was a true freshman with 3000 yds and 20 tds if u include his running tds. mind u he was playing the most important position in sports history! i would think this is a great start to whats going to be a great career! especially with all those WR recruits they got in dillin baxter, kyle prater, robert woods, xavier grimble, randall telfer, and markeith ambles!!!
Ted Miller (1:56 PM)
You make a fair point... and part of it is the way Carroll talked about Barkley, as if he were superhuman, which he clearly is not. By the end of the season,Carroll's constant and seemingly unquestioning defense of Barkley may have colored fan (and media) perspective. He's a talent, no doubt. But Barkley isn't the second-coming.
Bobby (Houston, TX)
Lache Seastrunk. Will he give Oregon another PAC10 Freshman offensive player of the year? He's good. Real good.
Ted Miller (1:56 PM)
He might.... you already looking ahead?
Is there another conference with more talent at the QB position returning? I say no.
Ted Miller (1:57 PM)
I'd say you are correct. At least in the preseason, it appears the conference will be outstanding at QB. And a lot of defensive talent was lost, so that might help them look even better.
Ted Miller (1:58 PM)
Folks... I need to go check in with USC and the NCAA and get back to the day job. I appreciate you stopping by. Lots of good questions.
