Andy Katz (1:09 PM)
Bit of a crazy day. Squeezing in some questions.
Daniel (Panama City, FL)
When do you consider your bracket "busted?"i am confident that my bracket is unfortunatly busted, but I would like to have a definite defintion.
Andy Katz (1:10 PM)
I guess I would say when you lose one or two of your Final Four teams.
Andy...who do you see as the next head coaches at St Johns and Seton Hall?
Andy Katz (1:14 PM)
Based on what I've been told Seton Hall is likely to go with Fran McCaffery (Siena) or Chris Mooney (Richmond). That's of course assuming both would do it as well. St. John's isn't going to get the blockbuster name. If the Red Storm make a significant play for Seth Greenberg (Va Tech) or Paul Hewitt (Ga Tech) they might get a good listen and steal one of them.
Andy, How far can KSU go? Is Jacob Pullen a preseason All-American next year?
Andy Katz (1:16 PM)
The Wildcats can reach the Final Four. If Pullen and Clemente make shots and the role players board this team can win two to get to Indy.
How do you see Baylor matching up with St. Mary's, and then either Duke or Purdue? Do you think they have a good chance at the final four?
Andy Katz (1:19 PM)
I might be partial to Saint Mary's here. I've seen both teams in the past two weeks. I like what Saint Mary's has done with the inside-out combo of Omar Samhan, the ability of Ben Allen to stretch the defense and the free-wheeling shooting of the guards. Baylor presents its own set of offensive issues for Saint Mary's. The question will be can Saint Mary's get the entry passes to Samhan into the post. If the Gaels can then they have a great shot to win.
How impressive did Wes Johnson look on the first weekend!? Is he good enough to carry Syracuse to the finals? People are trying to draw comparisons of him to Melo around here.
Andy Katz (1:19 PM)
He was extremely impressive. But Wes is a fourth-year junior. So it's hard to compare him to Carmelo. Melo was just one year removed from high school. Wes has been playing at this high a level for years while in the Big 12.
Who do you have coming out of the Midwest region now?
Andy Katz (1:23 PM)
I had Kansas. I'm now torn between Northern Iowa and Ohio State. The Buckeyes should win, but the karma with the Panthers is too good right. They certainly have the personnel, the size the shooters to bother Ohio State.
J.B. (Dunmore, PA)
How about a comparison of Rautins to G-Mac? Fair or not?
Andy Katz (1:25 PM)
Sure it's fair but I would say Rautins does more for Syracuse. GMAC was more valuable with his big shots. But he was more limited than Rautins.
Mike (San Diego)
Andy, good to hear you on Mike & Mike this morning. Is it just me or have there been a LOT of guys who have killed their draft stock in the tourney with poor perforances? Scottie Reynolds, James Anderson, Luke Harangody, and Greg Monroe just to name a few.
Andy Katz (1:26 PM)
Thanks.I'm not sure Reynolds' stock was very high. He wasn't a lock for the first round. I'm not sure Gody was, either. Anderson and Monroe should be just fine.
J.B. (Dunmore, PA)
Mr. Katz: With so many lower seeds and mid majors doing well, doesn't this give the committee a good (although ill advised) reason to expand to 96 teams?
Andy Katz (1:28 PM)
I would say the quite opposite. I'd like to see it stay the same or go to 68. Having a smaller field than 96 allows for more drama.
Alright Andy, so as of this morning, who's your pick to win it all? Kentucky or Syracuse? Or are you going out on a limb and picking someone else?
Andy Katz (1:33 PM)
As of this morning, I'm leaning Kentucky. The Wildcats were just too daunting in the first two rounds. The Wildcats are playing at such a high level and can count on four different players to win a game. They can also play at multiple speeds.
Bad showing from the mountain west huh? They all lost to sweet sixteen teams that are hot, but in the overall perspective not a strong showing I would say. BYU played tough, but New Mexico got hammered. Any thoughts?
Andy Katz (1:35 PM)
I didn't say it was a bad showing. I just said that the MWC needs to break through with a Sweet 16 team. That's all.
Andy, when does ESPN come clean on the Big East....I mean, you were ALL wrong. Losses to Xavier, St. Mary's, Ohio, Washington, Cal, etc.... They have one more team alive than the woeful Pac-10!!
Andy Katz (1:39 PM)
There is no conspiracy here. The Big East did perform well during the season. The Pac-10 did not outside the league. We weren't the only ones wrong. But let's examine this shall we: Syracuse and West Virginia cruised into the Sweet 16. Pitt, which was picked ninth, lost to a quality Xavier team. Notre Dame never should have been seeded six and lost. Louisville was flawed and lost. Marquette overachieved and lost to a more talented Washington. Georgetown was the one major disappointment. No question. The Hoyas let the league down. Villanova shouldn't have been a 2 and got beat by a quality Saint Mary's. I'll give you Hoyas and Nova. Pac-10 was still down overall. Cal and Washington were the most talented but underachieved. Ohio was ninth in the MAC. I wouldn't change a thing said prior to the tournament.
who do you think will be in next years final 4?
Andy Katz (1:39 PM)
Can we wait until we see who declares for the draft?
If the field expanded to 68 teams, what seeds would those play in games be for?
