Jesse Rogers (5:02 PM)
Hey all. Thanks for joining me for our weekly chat. We changed times this week because of some other things going on but ready now. Huet will start tomorrow. Final 10 games with the Hawks in first place in the conference. Lets get started!
is buff going to stay on defense? hes been great there and it seems like he plays with more fire on d.
Jesse Rogers (5:03 PM)
Certainly for the near future. He stayed there even with Seabrook's return and has played well. I think Q is going to ride him there as long as he can..unsure of what happens when Johnsson returns but for now, hes there.
Is it just me or does Eager need an impresive fight? Hasn't seemed to have a good fight since the Olympics Break....
Jesse Rogers (5:03 PM)
I would agree with that thought
Chioke Hassan (Baltimore,Md)
Dear JesseCould you see the Preisdent comming to Blackhawks games?
Jesse Rogers (5:04 PM)
If/When they play the Caps in the finals, I defintiely see it. I mean, he lives right there. :)
Josh (Arlington Heights)
How much effort is put into grouping forwards with particular D-pairings in the heat of battle? For example, when Toews and Kane are on the ice you would want someone who could carry the puck out of their own zone rather than try a 75 foot pass that typically gives the puck back to the opponent.
Jesse Rogers (5:05 PM)
Its more about whos on the ice for the other team when it comes to the Hawks D being out there. I dont think it plays a part in terms of forwards for the hawks matched up with their D.
Mike (Lake Bluff)
Right now what is the Hawks injury situation?
Jesse Rogers (5:07 PM)
Well, Sopel is perenially limping but hes still hanging in there. we know about campbell. JOhnsson has been out since the philly game. its definitely concussion type thing...i dont recall, and i cant find anyone that does, when the hit happened...Q said today it was more of a "collision" and he has not been on the ice since...so dont know when he returns...thats about it for injuries
Last year the roster of guys dressing for games in the playoffs was constant until some injuries crept in. If everyone is healthy except Campbell at the start of the playoffs who do you think are the healthy scratches and what will the lineup look like?
Jesse Rogers (5:09 PM)
good question. i cant believe fraser isnt getting a chance in there. maybe tomorrow. Q is going back, sort of, on his word about a rotation on that 4th line...i dont see anything from kopecky and eager that says they have to play every game, though i know kopecky scored twice against L.A. i cant predict that 4th line...matchups with the other team might play a part...i assume Burish is safe...ill say buff stays on D now...so if johnsson is back...then i think hendry and boynton would sit with maybe a sopel rotation when need be...
Looks like I predicted the Hossa at the point on the PP. From what I've seen, he's a good fit. He's been very decisive with the puck. How do you think he's done at the point, and will he continue as the point man?
Jesse Rogers (5:11 PM)
well enough....but i kind of like him in other places..he has that quick wrist shot..not sure if as effective from the point...but he can play anywhere. hes that good..so maybe for now but i htink he'll move around
Eric T. (Oak Lawn)
With niemi playing so well why take away his momentum and start huet against columbus. I say start him until he plays poorly then give huet his turn.
Jesse Rogers (5:13 PM)
Im sure a lof of people are wondering that. Q had a plan, I believe, form the beginning of the week and that had huet playing thur. he comitted today, basically, to deciding on a guy in the final 5 games of the reg season so until then it might go back and forth..im with you, i think niemi needs every bit of confidence and playing time cause its hard to see him NOT the guy come playoffs...but fine, let him play those final 5 games and hopefully he'll be ready...remember they're not fighitn for the 8th seed so you can play around a little bit i guess..
Dave (Glendale Heights)
Hey Jesse...if the Hawks decide after this season that Niemi is their guy moving forward and decide to buy-out Huet's contract, how would that affect the salary cap?
Jesse Rogers (5:15 PM)
his cap hit would be cut in half but cover double the length of his contract...so over 4 years instead of the next 2...would still hurt to have it count without a player on the roster if u know what im saying
Dan (St. Charles)
Do you think the Johnnson trade ever would have happened if Coach Q knew what a solid defensemen that Buff was? Clearly, that transition never should have happened just because Savard's Hawks were desperate for a big forward. He was a non-issue on offense, but has shown his impact on defense. What's your opinion on the initial transition under Savard, his impact on the playoffs at D, and if this would have drastically changed our trading scheme? Thanks
Jesse Rogers (5:17 PM)
Sometimes things happen and you dont expect them or see them coming...i dont have a prob with savy moving him up front..he was not excelling there...and then had a 19 goal season at wing...hes had some moments there. playoffs last year? but i think hes been re-energized cause he was playing 4th line, sometimes not touching the puck for shifts at a time...now hes part of the mix, big time...we'll see if it lasts...but i dont have a prob how its all gone down...even buff is surprised by his play...still early
How impressed are you with the Hawks' fans reaction to Otto's article insulting the UC's style of the national anthem? To me, it sends chills down my back and as each individual person cheers, they're truly letting out their appreciation and respect in a spectacularly unique way. I've heard former and current soldiers have differing views on it, but I think it's no question one of the best traditions in sports. What's your take?
Jesse Rogers (5:18 PM)
The intent is respect. That is what matters. I love it
When will Kim Johnsson be back, and who will he be paired with when he returns? I presume Byfuglien will move back onto the forward lines...
Jesse Rogers (5:19 PM)
As I said earlier unsure when he will be back..hasnt been on ice since march 13. im not positive buff goes back to forward...johnsson could slide back in with hammer and if buff keeps it up, he goes to a 5 or 6 and plays special teams..they are pretty good up front, though a bit smaller without buff there..all depends on how he plays
What do you think of Q's decision to start Huet the game after Niemi's "goalie win". Isn't that almost insulting to Niemi? At the very least it seems like a lack of confidence from Q especially after starting Crawford in Anaheim last week.
Jesse Rogers (5:20 PM)
Pretty much agree with you on that. I dont love it, but if Niemi falls apart cause of it, its also on him (niemi). Take this as a challenge and when back in there, get another shutout.
Andy (Old Town)
Jesse, If Buff is playing D, who is going to bother Luongo and get in his head?
Jesse Rogers (5:21 PM)
Still could go there for pp time. Thats basically when Buff did his damage
So random question, but which set of road roomies is the most odd couple-ish?
Jesse Rogers (5:22 PM)
hmmm..maybe steeg and boynton, cause he's new and you know steeg is steeg
I know Q won't admit to it yet, but did Niemi just cement his position as our playoff goalie with his performace last night? He was outstanding.
Jesse Rogers (5:22 PM)
May have done that before last night but i would think so...
What was the most impressive thing you saw in last nights game?
Jesse Rogers (5:24 PM)
several things...first of all, my fav recent stat im going to mention until it no longer applies, the hawks have not trailed after the first period in a game since 1/30 in carolina. so i continue to like how they establish themselves well early in games...and then of course I liked Niemi...those 2 things from last night
Jenna (Downers Grove)
What's your prediction for the win-loss record for the remaining games?
Jesse Rogers (5:25 PM)
10 games..3 playoff type opponetns...2 sets of back to back...4 home , 6 road...hmmm....no worse than 6-4
Will the real Chicago Blackhawks please stand up? Which team will we see going forward, the one that had shutouts against LA and Phoenix or the one that only plays 40 minutes a night?
Jesse Rogers (5:27 PM)
L.a. and Phoenix with a little 40 minute games in there but not 4 out of 7 bad ones...even that first phoenix game, how do we know thet dont win that one in ot in the playoffs? they're ok. i like getitng leads...they'll shut it down come playoff time when they need to, i believe.
Adam (San Diego)
Last night is the first game I can recall watching this season where our goalie actually "stole" the game from the other team. I'm 100% sure we will see Niemi in the net come playoff time.
Jesse Rogers (5:27 PM)
You and about a million other fans believe that...
Jenna (Downers Grove)
Where do you think Detroit will end up in the play-off standings? Something tells me they'll shoot higher than the 8th seed before the end of the regular season...
Jesse Rogers (5:27 PM)
yeah. higher than 8
Your boy pierre lebrun is picking vancouver over the hawks to go to the cup? is he all hopped up on the canada koolaid?
Jesse Rogers (5:29 PM)
probably cuase hes thinking louongo over what the hawks will have. c'mon, its not totally crazy. im going to tell you right now, the west will be upside down before its said and done. 5 young goalies in the playoffs, new teams, old teams, hot teams, cold ones...it will be nuts, i believe
If we convert Buff back to D, won't that solve some of the issues of finding a new D for next year since Barker's gone and Johnsson won't be back?
Jesse Rogers (5:30 PM)
It is quite possible. lets ot get ahead of ourselves but based on willingness back there and his play so far im sure Q is thinking it as well...but no rush on those kind of decisions..he made a couple of up the middle passes the last 2 games..he needs to be careful...the more hes back there, i dont want to see him get lazy with his game..hes on top of it now cause he knows everyone is watching and its new, etc. i think he can do it if he puts his mind to it. i sound like his dad or something
Hi Jesse,If it weren't for the flu, it seemed as if Huet would have started at least one game on the recent West Coast trip. Now he is getting the nod in Columbus tomorrow. Coach Q has stated that he wants to give both goalies a good look, but do you think he is skeptical about starting Huet at home? I'm at every game and the home crowd is brutal even when he makes a good save, it's all sarcastic applause...
Jesse Rogers (5:32 PM)
Maybe. Im pretty sure that weekend against Philly and Wash, there was some thinking that went into that. if wash had put up like a crazy 8 spot on him or something, the place would have gone nuts so i do think there is something to what you are saying but not the overiding decision
Burnsy (Regina, SK)
Why is Coach Q bouncing back between Neimi and Huet? With 10 games left dont you think we should ride ONE and solidify a playoff goaltender for our team?!?!
Jesse Rogers (5:33 PM)
basically, yes, i agree..last year he waited until april and it worked out pertty good. last 5 or 6 is fine...huet does have to be ready in case niemi falters...i bet osgood gets a game or two down the strecth for same reason in det.
If Huet flops again against Columbus will the Hawks look to him anymore?
Jesse Rogers (5:34 PM)
Cant tell you for sure he wont play again but sure, hes on thin ice for playing time
With the season winding down, have the Hawks performed better or worse than you thought they would at the beginning of the season, or are they right where you thought they would be? What factors, if any, do you attribute to the difference between your predictions and where they are now?
Jesse Rogers (5:35 PM)
Good question..at their best they have perfomred better...the differnece in shots for and against has been amazing at times..and the puck posession they have played is reminiscent of det over the last few years...so i would say they have exceeded what i thought they would be in the reg season...
Prediction for where the Hawks finish in the West and who their first round opponent will be?
Jesse Rogers (5:37 PM)
Hmm.I'll say second. I say san jose finds their mojo now that theyve broken their losing streak..and they play mostly at home after they finish this 6 game roadie...ill say they end up with nashville..just a guess
If the playoffs started today and we played the Wings first round, how do you think the series would play out?
Jesse Rogers (5:38 PM)
at least 6, maybe 7 gamnes...hard to say the winner..but ill go with the hawks..they are deeper and the trade of hossa from their team to the hawks tilts it our way!
Are the Hawks at all concerned with getting the #1 seed in the conference, or will they start to rest some key players once the division title is locked up?
Jesse Rogers (5:39 PM)
They want the number 1 seed...they'll still scale back a little in the final week or so but they want that home ice throughout ..who wouldnt?
Obviously the final standings not yet complete, overall, who do you think is the best matchup for the Hawks in the Western Conference playoffs and who would be the most concerning? Taking this further, who would be the best matchup for the Cup Finals and who would be the most concerning?
Jesse Rogers (5:40 PM)
Calgary would be the best matchup in my opinion. washington would concern me for finals..too much offense..i guess NJ would work for a decent matchup
Jesse, One thing I clearly noticed last night was the energy and determination to finish off the game in the last 4 minutes. I mean they battled hard in the corner until last second. Do you think that is the result of a Madden speech of needing to play playoff type hockey now?
Jesse Rogers (5:41 PM)
Nah, I think its a result of blowing all these leads and knowing they cant take leads for granted
ben (the office)
Aside from the obvious answer of goaltending, what one area do you foresee as a stumbling block for the Hawks in the playoffs?
Jesse Rogers (5:41 PM)
Coverage in their own zone...its not as good as it needs to be at times...they need to play in the offensive zone. thats their game
If the Hawks had pulled off the Huet/Vokoun swap, do you think the Hawks would have a solid answer in goal? Or would it still be a question of Niemi or Vokoun?
Jesse Rogers (5:42 PM)
Is it just me or has Burish been somewhat invisible lately? Great out of the gate after his injury, but.....
Jesse Rogers (5:43 PM)
Little quiet. Not unusual for a player starting his season this late...only thing that matters is playoffs.
Admit it, the Hawks really hope the Wings don't get the 7 seed. They would be much happier with them at 8, playing San Jose.
Jesse Rogers (5:43 PM)
Probably bt they will tell you they think they will have to see det at some point. so what the diff when you see them?
Any idea what the Hawks' brass thinks of Kyle Beach right now? He's dominating in juniors. Near the top of the league in points and PIMs, if I'm not mistaken.
Jesse Rogers (5:44 PM)
they like him. tweaked a knee recently. i see him making the team next year...maybe.
It seems like Eager is taking a lot of heat for his play recently. Why do you think more attention is on him that Burish and Kopecky?
Jesse Rogers (5:45 PM)
burish and kopecky didnt take two after the whistle penalties the other night inclduing a double minor and they werent on the ice when seabs got hit..he was (im told..dont remember seeing him myslef) but if he was, would have been nice for him to go after wiz...thats why the heat
Is Hossa a vocal guy, or just a true "professional". The guy is a monster, and should be on the ice more, but doesn't say boo about being on the #2 line or inexplicably not being included in every shootout possible.
Jesse Rogers (5:46 PM)
quiet as far as i can tell and yes a pro..he'll talk privately with guys
So after an overtime or shootout winner, which player would you least want to see bearing down on you for the postgame celebration? Toews looks like he can be pretty aggressive with those celebratory hugs...
Jesse Rogers (5:47 PM)
Buff. he never gets knocked down. i see guys bounce off him in practice all the time
ben (the office)
Being another year older, do you see Toews and Kane's playoff beards filling in any better than last year? Who gets your vote for best April/May facial hair?
Jesse Rogers (5:48 PM)
toews looks like hugh jackman as wolfman or whatever from the x-men movie...kane will alwyas look 12 in my opinion...best? hmmm..sopel, maybe. looks mean. i dont know.
John (Iowa City)
Which Hawks are free agents after this season? Which guys will likely be gone?
Jesse Rogers (5:49 PM)
Really? Now? I cant start that up again. next week or in 2 months
Best part of last night? The standing O that Seabs got after the Fiddler hit/skirmish was pretty great.
Jesse Rogers (5:50 PM)
Yeah, i liked that too. good hit and repsonse from crowd
Brent Zartler (Tinely Park)
why in the shoot out loss to phoenix why wouldn't hossa shoot instead of sharp?
Jesse Rogers (5:51 PM)
not sure...Q said something about sharp being right handed but i didnt understand it. hossa's shoulder was hurting a little recently, its why he missed a game so maybe he didnt feel comfortable..sharp has been better in shootouts lately..i like hossa in there every time as well
For a team that is so talented offensively, what is their problem with shot accuracy? The first period (PP) last night was horrible? I think they must have taken 10-15 shots that missed the net.
Jesse Rogers (5:52 PM)
Agreed. Trying for the pefect, top shelf goal. Thats where you score in the nhl but sometimes you just need to get dirty, with traffic, you can get a puck "through" a golaie or what not...theres the answer. trying for the perfectly placed shot.
ben (the office)
Is Hossa cool with being a "star" but not getting the marketing push behind him that Kane and Toews do? They're the ones throwing out first pitches and in commercials, etc. Is part of the reason Hossa came here for the big market and marketing potential, or did he just like the 10 year future of this team the best?
Jesse Rogers (5:54 PM)
I cant answer that but i will tell you ive never seen any jealousy or anything like that from him...im sure they would have him doing that stuff if he wanted..hes very respected in there
What do Hawks do on April 11th. Beat Detroit, Finish #1 and play them in first round. Or have a few upper body injuries, lose, and let somebody else deal with Detroit. Seems risky to temp the hockey playoff seeding gods!
Jesse Rogers (5:55 PM)
Yeah, thats come up. No one will admit to tanking a game but im all for it! If its for first in the conference than they play to win...i mean, you do get rewarded with home ice so there is incentive.
I miss you on the post game, any chance you could replace the guy on WGN?
Jesse Rogers (5:56 PM)
My man Judd Sirott? He's terrbile. Kidding. Good friend. I miss that job but love this one...hey, i was at the pool in phoenix for 6 hours then saw a hockey game..didnt get to do that doing pre/post! stuck in a studio.
You ever tune in to Sharpy's segment on Eric
Jesse Rogers (5:57 PM)
If it doesnt happen on espn, its not happening. no, i havent but i dont know what station they are on. :) not kidding.
Jesse Rogers (6:00 PM)
Thats going to do it for this week. Thanks everyone. Appreciate it. email me at firstname.lastname@example.org if you want. and follow me on twitter @espnchihawks. and check out my blog. new stuff everyday..talk to you next week from minny, i believe...thanks again!
