I guess the weather is way too nice today because nobody is in the office. We're tracking down Matthew now and hopefully he'll take some time away from the sun to join us in chat.
Matthew Barnaby (4:12 PM)
One final playoff race still in tack. Playoffs right around the corner, let's get to your questions.
Are the Coyotes a legit Stanley Cup contender?
Matthew Barnaby (4:13 PM)
I don't see them as one. There are just too many strong teams in the Western Conference. They have been a great story all year long and if they can win one playoff series, I think that will be a success.
Kyle (Iowa )
Mike Green for Norris?
Matthew Barnaby (4:14 PM)
I would say yes. Most of the time this goes to an offensive defensemen and this gay has proven to be the best in the league offensively.
With the last regular season game being played in Pittsburgh tonight, do you have any "Mellon moments" you'd care to share?
Matthew Barnaby (4:16 PM)
Yes, I was actually supposes to be at the last game. I was invited by the Penguins and that would have been very cool. My favorite memory is a 5-OT loss to the Flyers. One on the games that will always stick in my mind as it was just a great battle.
Matthew, the western conference is so strong compared to the east. The west could end up with 7 teams over 100 pts in the east you could have maybe 3. Is it time to change up the conferences?
Matthew Barnaby (4:17 PM)
No I don't think so. I like the way it is. The Western Conference is stronger. So I guess it's up to the GM's in the East to start doing a better job.
jason (sacramento ca)
how realistic is it for san jose and chicago to meet in the conference finals and if they do who would you pick and why
Matthew Barnaby (4:18 PM)
I think they are the two best teams in the Western Conference. Since I picked San Jose to win at the start of the year, I'm going to stick with that bet. Chicago looks very tough to bear though.
Your thoughts on Buffalo's rookie Tyler Ennis? Looks like Tim Connolly will be out for awhile. Can Ennis continue to fill the void?
Matthew Barnaby (4:19 PM)
I love the way that he has played. He brings energy and passion and it's no fluke that he's putting up points. Very good in the AHL and I do not see them sending him anywhere.
Who is/was the best fighter in the league this season?
brett (west chester)
if the flyers make the playoffs - how afraid should NJ be - the flyers handled them this year (5-1 record against them)?
Matthew Barnaby (4:20 PM)
Wow! I still think the toughest player in the league is Derrick Bogart. He doesn't fight that much because he his just way too tough.
Matthew Barnaby (4:21 PM)
I don't think they should be afraid at all. The Flyers have been inconsistent all year long and in a seven game series, I think New Jersey will handle them pretty easily.
Do you think the Caps can lock it down in goal/blue line to make a serious charge for the cup?
Matthew Barnaby (4:23 PM)
I think they can make a serious charge for the cup. They can score with anyone, they have a great power play which is very important, and defense is all about competing. If they can dedicate themselves to that, they can win it all.
Matt (Fresno, CA )
Matty B, how do you see the 5th-8th seeds shaping out in the West?
Matthew Barnaby (4:24 PM)
Detroit 5, L.A. 6, Nashville 7 and Colorado 8.
Caps fan, who should I be most worried about in the Eastern Conference playoffs?
Matthew Barnaby (4:26 PM)
I would say the Devils. If there is a team that has the capabilities of shutting down a good offense, it's a Lemaire coached team.
How far do you see the Devils going in the playoffs?
Matthew Barnaby (4:27 PM)
I actually have them getting to the Stanley Cup Finals. I really think Kovalchuk was a piece they we missing and they play so well defensively that they give themselves a chance to win every game.
Who is your pick to win the Cup?
Matthew Barnaby (4:28 PM)
San Jose Sharks. I think Joe Thorton is sick and tired of post season failure and he will have a strong playoff.
Do you think the Capitals 7-2-1 record without Ovechkin hurts his chances at the Hart? Also do his suspensions hurt his chances?
Matthew Barnaby (4:30 PM)
Not at all, he has been a dominate player. After approximately missing 10 games, this guy is always at the top of the list.
Do you see the Avalanche as a legitimate contender in the first round?
Matthew Barnaby (4:32 PM)
I don't know. This is a team that I thought was over achieving all year long and would come back to reality. And they have. These kids have played hard all year long and they should be very proud of themselves just getting into the playoffs. They are going to play San Jose or Chicago in the first round and I would think it would be a quick series.
Rangers or Philly for the Playoffs?
Matthew Barnaby (4:33 PM)
I'm going to pick the Flyers. The Rangers have a home and home but I just don't see them winning back-to-back against the Flyers. They have been way too inconsistent all year long.
Larry (Nashua, NH)
What do you think will be the biggest surprise (player or team) during the playoffs?
Matthew Barnaby (4:34 PM)
I think the New Jersey Devils. All the talk has been about Washington and Pittsburgh but I really feel New Jersey is going to make a run. I'm either going to look really smart or really stupid.
Matthew Barnaby (4:35 PM)
Good luck to all the Rangers and Flyers fans out there. Next time we talk, our matchups will be set. Talk to you next week.
