Chat with Tyson Alualu
Alualu was third on the Bears with 65 total tackles in 2009.
Welcome to SportsNation! On Friday, we're going to talk NFL draft when DT prospect, and former Cal player, Tyson Alualu stops by to chat.
Alualu led the Bears in sacks in 2009 with 7.5 and fumbles recovered with two. After a great senior season, this Hawaii native was picked to represent Cal at the 2010 Senior Bowl.
Scouts Inc. ranks Alualu as the sixth best defensive tackle in the draft based on his durability - he has played in every game of his collegiate career - and his profile says that he "plays with an edge and looks to drive offensive linemen back when he gets under their pads."

Tyson is here!
Growing up who was your favorite team
Tyson Alualu (4:21 PM)
Growing up I didn't really have a favorite NFL team. I had favorite players. I played RB and LB in Pop Warner. I looked up to Emmitt Smith. He was my favorite player. Him and Priest Holmes. I didn't have a favorite team.

Who was a football player that you always wanted to be like?
Tyson Alualu (4:22 PM)
When I started high school football, that's when I started to play D-line and I started watching NFL film. I liked the classics. I liked watching Reggie White. Howie Long. Those are some great players. LBs like Lawrence Taylor. There are a lot of players I enjoyed watching and make my game after.
HEy Tyson, How will you be watching the draft
Tyson Alualu (4:23 PM)
On draft day, I'll be with my family, the people that have always been with me in Hawaii. I'll be with them and my church family in Hawaii. Nothing big, just have a barbecue, have a good time.
Which team do you hope to join?
Tyson Alualu (4:24 PM)
Not really. I'm just excited to be in this position. I'm blessed. Any team that picks me up, that will be my favorite team. I don't have any preference to where I want to go. I just want to get a shot to play in the NFL. Any team will be great for me.
do you play video games? How excited are you to see yourself in Madden next year?
Tyson Alualu (4:25 PM)
I play a little bit of video games. Not too much. Just being a part of the NFL and having the opportunity is a blessing all its own. I just can't wait to be a part of the NFL. Having yourself in a video game is a blessing. I'm excited.
Tyson my dude Giants need DT help hope they pick you early...Do you see yourself fitting in a 4/3 defense. Would you like to play in NY with Tuck and Osi
Tyson Alualu (4:28 PM)
If the Giants picked me up, I would be happy. Any team would be a blessing to be a part of. As far as schemes, I've been talking to a lot of teams both in the 3-4 and 4-3. A lot of them see that I fit in both. Some see my playing nose in a 3-4 and some as a DE in a 3-4. In the 4-3, some see me as a DE and on third down moving in to rush the passer. I'm just looking forward to the opportunity. Whatever it is, I will make the most of it.

What would you consider is your strength and what do you feel you need to improve to help you in the nfl?
Tyson Alualu (4:29 PM)
I think my strenght is my versatility. Being able to play a lot of positions, I owe it to my coaches and teammates at Cal. To find success at those positions. I think I have solidified myself as a run stopper. The physical part, that is what I like. I feel like I can work more on my pass rush. That's a big part of the NFL, getting after the QB. That's something I want to get better at throughout my career.

Why did you pick Cal instead of your native country's college Hawaii?
Tyson Alualu (4:31 PM)
I had a lot of offers coming out of school. Most of the Pac-10. The reason I chose Cal was that it was my best all around offer. A chance to play football, but also to go to a great academic school. I chose to take advantage of it on and off the field. I did consider going to Hawaii. Growing up, I watched all of their games. My uncle went there. But out of high school, I didn't think it was a fit for me. I thought Cal was my best choice. I would have liked to go to Hawaii, because my family could have watched me play, but I chose Cal because it was my best all around offer.

what you gon buy your moms wit your first check?
Tyson Alualu (4:32 PM)
Oh man. I haven't really thought about it. I definitely want to get something for my parents. They've always been there for me. They did a great job of raising me. They made me the man I am today. I'm not sure yet, but there's something coming in for them. Bless them for blessing me for the years that they've taken care of me. It will definitely be something good.
Tyson. Do you have any pre-game rituals.
Tyson Alualu (4:33 PM)
Right before every game, I have to say my prayers. I pray to God that when I play on the field that everything I do is giving glory to his name. So many people listen to music to pump them up, hard music, rock music. For me, it's the opposite. I listen to music to calm me down. It helps me relax and then let loose on the field. Before every game, I have to call my wife and talk to her before the games and check in with her. That's basically it.
Tyson Alualu (4:35 PM)
I want to say thank you to everybody that's been supporting me throughout my career. Thank you guys. Once I get this opportunity to play in the league, I don't want to dissapoint anybody. Shout out to anybody that's been there for me. Much love. I appreciate it.
