Chat with Matt Williamson
Welcome to SportsNation! On Wednesday, Scouts Inc.'s Matt Williamson will stop by to chat some NFL.
Williamson has been scouting football players at different levels for six years. Before joining ESPN and Scouts Inc. in 2005, he was both an NFL and college scout for the Cleveland Browns. Before that, he spent three seasons as assistant recruiting coordinator at the University of Pittsburgh and followed J.D. Brookhart from Pitt to the University of Akron, where Williamson was the director of football operations.
Send your questions now and join Williamson Wednesday at noon ET!
Matt Williamson (12:00 PM)
Happy Draft Day Eve to all! Sleeping tonight will be difficult. Too excited to open all the presents under the tree tomorrow. Gettyup!
Do you think the Browns would give up a few of their 3rd round picks to move from 7th to 1st in order to draft Bradford. Feels like the Rams want to wiggle out of the first spot....
Matt Williamson (12:03 PM)
Overall, I think the Browns need to move out of 7-one way or another. Lets get this out now: The first 6 players selected are going to be Bradford, Suh, McCoy, Okung, T Williams and Berry. Then, there is a drop off for the Brownies. No Man's Land. Bradford would be great-but very expensive in many ways. I think the more logical move for Clev is to move up to #5 to get Berry. KC could then take Bulaga. If they can't move up for Bradford or more likely Berry, moving back has to be the move-if possible. Was actually on the Cleveland ESPN affiliate yesterday talking about this. So who is
Richard (Greensboro, NC)
Is it reasonable to expect any team to get more than 2 players who play significant roles in 2010 in the draft?
Matt Williamson (12:05 PM)
To expect it? No, but it certainly happens. Happens every year I guess. Look at Jax last year-got a ton from their draft class. So, yes, I guess you can expect it from a several teams, but predicting which ones is obviously very difficult.
Hey Matt,Do you think Bruce Allen will be able to trade for another Day 2 pick?
Matt Williamson (12:05 PM)
No. I think he would be wise to stay pat at #4 and take his favorite OT-Okung or Williams. That need is just too massive and it works out well for them to get the top OT on their board.
Anthony (San Antonio)
Who do you see the Cowboys taking with the 27th pick tomorrow? Is it likely that they try to trade up to the 10th, 11th, or 12th picks?
Matt Williamson (12:07 PM)
The Cowboys are not an easy one to predict. I think their home run pick would be Earl Thomas, who will never last that long. Maybe you get real aggressive to go get him though if he falls a bit. Could see them taking Taylor Mays-and I see why some are enamored with him-but I don't like it at all. That probably leaves OL. C Brown, M Iupati, B Campbell. Of those choices, Iupati would be the one I wanted most for Dallas.
John, Austin [via mobile]
can the Texans get enough in the draft to take the final step into the playoffs? They really didnt do much in the off season other than re-sign some of their own.
Matt Williamson (12:09 PM)
I tend to think not. Could certainly see them completing their offense by getting a very solid RB prospect to add to the mix, but that secondary needs at least one starter-maybe two. I do like their present crop of no name CBs better than many do though. I also tend to think that a big run stuffing DT is a big need for them too. How do they get all these items?
Hey Matt, is Jason Pierre Paul really worthy of a top 10 or even 15 pick? to me this guy is being drafted more on potential than production and could become a vernon gholston.
Matt Williamson (12:10 PM)
I am with you on him. Let someone else take him. He does play hard though and isn't lazy, which is a big plus for him, but wow, he scares me.
matt (Grand Rapids)
Any chance Spiller is around for Dolphins first pick (12th), and if so, do they at least think about it?
Matt Williamson (12:11 PM)
The only way I think they consider it is if they have a deal in place to move R Brown-which is possible. But without a 2nd rounder, their D needs are just too gaping to take a luxury guy like Spiller. FS is a very big need, as is adding a young NT. OLB is right up there too. I see a better chance that they trade down to try to recoup a 2nd rounder.
Any way the Eagles get Earl Thomas without trading up?
Matt Williamson (12:12 PM)
No. But maybe if they trade up. On the Monday and Tuesday podcasts (check them out) we held a Super Fan Mock of the first round. Was a lot of fun and good stuff overall. But the Eagles traded up to #12 and snagged Joe Haden. Could see that happening for real (more or less) with Haden or Thomas.
Daniel Williams (San Diego)
Matt, Big Ben to the raiders for Namdi and their 2nd Round Draft pick? Namdi and Troy in the Secondary would be pretty scary!
Matt Williamson (12:13 PM)
It sure would! From what I understand though, Nnamdi's contract is insane and that makes him nearly untradable. Good thoughts though.
Matt Williamson (12:14 PM)
Side Note: Shame on me for six weeks, but I missed the Sportscenter with Jon Gruden doing his QB coaching/analysis. Does anyone know where I can catch that still? Much appreciated. Whoever finds it gets a gold star on their forehead.
Hey Matt, your the GM and you're choosing between Suy and McCoy....who do you take and why?
Matt Williamson (12:16 PM)
It would be somewhat dependent on which system I was running, but in all reality, it would prob be Suh no matter what. I just see much less downside. McCoy is great-don't get me wrong. In fact, the 2nd best player in this draft, but if/when his amazing quickness starts to go, he would worry me. Suh just has it all. Much more powerful. More versatile in where you can line him up. Only started playing football in 10th grade...still a puppy in terms of learning the game.
Mike, can you please tell me Singletary will knock some sense into the niners new GM and forbid hiim from taking Clausen.
Matt Williamson (12:17 PM)
My name is Matt. So you are on your own with that quest.
You can find anything on Youtube!!!!!!
Matt Williamson (12:18 PM)
That is probably true. I am 36 years old, but live in the Stone Ages a bit with such things. No Twitter/Facebook/etc. Gold star for Chris...although I would prefer to watch it on my 52" flat screen.
Matt Williamson 2.0 (Iowa)
What is the only way the chiefs can screw up the 5th pick?
Matt Williamson (12:18 PM)
Well MW, they sure did screw up the 3rd pick last year at this time. Just an FYI-Not sold on Pioli here.
The Bills HAVE to take an offensive lineman with their top pick, don't they? Is there a chance they could get a top OL and then get a guy like McCoy in the second?
Matt Williamson (12:19 PM)
Not a McCoy fan to begin with, but really don't like him in a poor weather environment. But I do agree with OT in round one, but never forget, the Bills have massive and many needs. Dan Williams makes sense. As does Dez Bryant. 3 OTs should already be gone-maybe 4, as I think Oak will take Davis.
Give me some names that make sense for the Bears when their 3rd round pick rolls around...
Matt Williamson (12:21 PM)
We talked about this on the podcast as well and I would look at two positions: OL and Safety. This is a deep safety draft, so quality might fall to that point. And, like in just about every draft, you can find tough mauling heavy footed productive guards at that stage of the draft who end up playing in the league for a long time. That should be what they look to accomplish with this draft.
Brian (Fisher, IN)
Sounds like you're pretty sure the Chiefs won't draft Berry--your thoughts as to why?
Matt Williamson (12:22 PM)
Didn't say that. I def think they should and they very well could. I have him penciled in with that pick, but like I said, not sure if I am on board with Pioli and he very well could do something that I disagree with like take Bulaga.
kevin (Casper Wy)
what do you think about the fourty niners getting ginn will he help at all or be a bust?
Matt Williamson (12:23 PM)
This is the way to look at that trade: SF traded a late round pick for an elite kickoff returner, which was a massive need for them. It just so happens that this kickoff returner plays WR as well. If you get much out of him as a WR, it is gravy. But there is upside there and he certainly can stretch the field. A change of scenery can't hurt him in this regard either. Worth it.
Josh (Flushing , MI)
what should indy focus on in the draft?
Matt Williamson (12:25 PM)
I have Roger Saffold penciled in to Indy. LT potential, but surely would play for them at RT or OG if that doesn't work out. C Brown would be a home run as a future LT. A backup DE is required, but there are a fair amount of undersized fast edge rushers in this draft. Wouldn't object to a DT like Price from UCLA. CB also could use one more guy.
Robert (Monrovia, Ca)
As a Browns fan the I would love it if the Steelers traded Roethlisberger out of the division. Roethlisberger to the Raiders for this year's 1st rounder and 2012 1st rounder.
Matt Williamson (12:26 PM)
Of course you would. He screams of being a Raider to me. 2012 though? I know they don't have a 2011 #1, but wow. This year's
Robert (Latrobe, PA)
Rumor is now that the Steelers are contacting teams about a Roethlisberger trade. What is the fair market value, even with his off-field issues? I would think if Cutler could bring in two firsts, a third, and a starting QB, Roethlisberger would command something similar, even with his issues.
Matt Williamson (12:29 PM)
I tend to lean towards what you said too, but it sounds like Ben will be suspended 4 to 6 games this year-that doesn't help his immediate value! Still, I seem to be in the minority though and most tend to think that PGH won't get nearly that much-which, in the end, prob means that he stays. It wasn't like Cutler was a Saint though-he had his critics with off the field behavior and wasn't nearly the winner that Ben is. Frankly, Ben is just a better player-and is still very young. Could get 8 to 10 years of him as your starting QB. That Raiders' O would be quite strong with #7 added to it.
What teams are interested in dealing for Jason Campbell??
Matt Williamson (12:31 PM)
Have said this a lot-many should be. Teams who should consider it: Jax, Car, STL, Oak, Buf. Gailey like more mobile guys, but still, he fits the conditions. I am prob missing a few teams. Maybe Pittsburgh if Ben goes. He isn't a West Coast style QB, but if you want a downfield passer with upside and experience, Campbell could be that guy at a discounted rate. Disclaimer: Not saying he will be a star, but I see him as a very good BUY right now and could resurrect his career under better circumstances and with more stability in the coaching staff than he has ever had.
I remember that you did a great piece on the building blocks of the Lions a while back (maybe a year ago). Any chance for an update on that story comparing where they were vs. where they are now?
Matt Williamson (12:33 PM)
Note to Editors: I am up for it if you are! Could be a real good post-draft piece. Maybe do that for a handful of the terrible teams in the league, but I do remember that Lions Building Blocks article. Would have to dust it off and see what I wrote, but it was right after they went 0-16. Name 10 guys to build around: Obviously Calvin J was at the top. The bottom of that list wasn't pretty though!
would kyle wilson be a good fit for the colts
Matt Williamson (12:33 PM)
For sure, but he won't last that long. Sorry Bro.
Any thoughts on the ESPN rumor that the Steelers are "actively seeking" a top 10 pick for Big Ben? I hope it's nothing more than a scare tactic to scare Ben straight, because otherwise that'd be an outright disaster.
Matt Williamson (12:35 PM)
Been hearing the same things as well here in Pittsburgh. Very torn on the subject. But I tend to think that with this significant suspension, Pittsburgh will be able to say "We looked into trading Ben (to Oakland/Buffalo/Somewhere Awful) but due to his suspension, we were not able to get ample compensation-but we might look into it again next off season."...if that doesn't scare Ben straight, nothing will.
Adam (East Lansing, MI)
What are your thoughts on the Lions possibly trading their 3rd Round Pick to Washington for Haynesworth and drafting Suh at #2? This would definitely give Brett Favre a reason to seriously consider retirement wouldn't it? Vanden Bosch-Suh-Haynesworth-Avril...scary thought!!!
Matt Williamson (12:37 PM)
Adam-you are relentless. All in all, I can't criticize Detroit for giving up a 3rd for Big Al. Schwartz knows exactly what he would be getting-which is a fantastic football player. But then I would shop that #2 pick. I love Suh and all, but there would be a real log jam at DT...and needless to say, Det has other needs!
The Eagles have a decent amount of picks this year what position should they try to address first in the draft?
Matt Williamson (12:38 PM)
Ideally, they need to get a real legit CB and/or FS prospect. More reinforcements on the OL seem to be in the cards too, esp considering how Reid drafts. They have options on the OL though, so I don't think they are pigeon holed into one specific position there. Still think they could use another DE and maybe yet another LB. Secondary is the biggest need though.
Matty, if Dez Bryant falls to the steelers can they pass on him?
Matt Williamson (12:40 PM)
Nope. I assume they have sit down with the young man and if he is just an immature person, then you take him. If he is a bad person, then you pass. I can't comment one way or another with that-but most tend to say that he is a hard worker who is just immature. If so, "Dez, Welcome to Pittsburgh. You go hang out with Hines Ward."
Mike (Boca Raton)
A few of the dopes that masquerade as sportswriters are stating that the steelers need OT help in round 1. Please affirm my position that interior Offensive Line is the true need and that Pouncey or Iupoti would be a solid pick at slot 18 in round 1. (as Ben says: "Thank you and God Bless")
Matt Williamson (12:41 PM)
Crushing my home town team here-sorry. Not trying to be a homer, but yes, OT is not the problem at all. Colon is a very good RT. I think they are stuck with Starks. He is average, but that will do. Center is a huge problem and RG could surely use an upgrade. Pouncey should be their guy.
dukeovdank dayton ohio [via mobile]
will troy smith be a starting qb in the nfl?
Matt Williamson (12:42 PM)
No, but I like him a lot. Super tough. Very good athlete. Throws it well enough. Still a lot of work to do as a passer, but would like to see that guy with a shot to be a starter somewhere (Oakland?). But, if I am Balt, I am not just giving him away.
Let me write the Chiefs building blocks article for you. Jamaal Charles, Brandon Flowers, and Tamba Hali are pro-bowl level players; Brandon Albert could be at guard; Bowe is overrated; and every other player shouldn't be higher than 2nd or 3rd on any team's depth chart.
Matt Williamson (12:45 PM)
Like I have said-have my concerns about Pioli. Are the Chiefs any better off right now than when he took over? And I agree with your building blocks. I also like D Johnson-but not in this scheme. Would love to see Dorsey in another D as well. As for Albert, I do think he needs more of an opportunity to say if he is truly a LT or not, but overall, I think adding a LT would be great-move Albert to OG or more likely, RT.
Matt - I ranked the top 50 corners in football...I found 30 corners that I think are better than DeAngelo Hall. Thoughts?
Matt Williamson (12:45 PM)
Wow-good for you. I bet I could come up with 30 as well. Actually, probably more.
Mark (Santa Ana)
Any chance this will be a boring first round?? Seems like the most anticipated draft in years.
Matt Williamson (12:46 PM)
That is an impossibility. Best day of the year. Nothing is boring about it-ever. Tread lightly Mark. Tread lightly.
Jared Barker (New York)
Big Ben is so overrated. The Steelers won their 2 Super Bowls because of defense. Ben was good, but not great.
Matt Williamson (12:47 PM)
Wrong. He is an elite QB. Sure, his supporting cast had something to do with it! But, if I am ranking the QBs in this league right now, I only put Peyton, Brady and Brees ahead of Roethlisberger.
Hayden (Logan, Utah)
any chance the niners trade to get berry? what would they have to give up?
Matt Williamson (12:48 PM)
For their sake, I hope they don't. That isn't a knock on Berry, but SF MUST get a big time OT prospect from this draft. To get Berry, that probably doesn't happen.
Matt I think Adam may be on to something...I we have Suh and Haynesworth that would make for a killer goal line defense too.
Matt Williamson (12:49 PM)
Of course it would! I love both players. But what I am saying is that I just don't know if a team with so many needs can dedicate such resources to one position.
Robert (Latrobe, PA)
I know that reaching for need is not Belichick's style, but does he realize that Alge Crumpler is the only NFL-ready TE on his roster? If Gresham is on the board, don't they have to take him?
Matt Williamson (12:51 PM)
The Pats TE situation is very intriguing to me. Even with adding Crumpler, he is WAY more of a blocker now than receiver. Seem him lately? He is 280! NEng also played a ton of 6 OL sets last year. Are they just more or less doing away with the TE? They do prefer to use the spread with WRs. To be THIS light at the position is just very puzzling to me-and clearly BB has a plan. Of course, it must be noted that this is a good TE draft and Gresham in round one would make sense, as would many options with one of NEng's 3 2nd rounders.
Why shouldn't the Browns take Earl Thomas at 7 if Berry is gone. Trading down and not getting him may be too risky and it seems to me if you think a guy is a pro-bowler you take him wherever you are.
Matt Williamson (12:52 PM)
I am with you for the most part. But I do think there are four or five other players who would present similar value as Thomas for Clev. Once again, it isn't like the Browns are without their share of needs. How about D Morgan or R McClain? Dez Bryant? Clausen? All in trade down scenarios.
Pete Carroll is tweeting "hints" about who the Seahawks are planning to take in the draft... his hints are mp3 songs.Anybody STILL think he should have left the NCAA?
Matt Williamson (12:53 PM)
Is that fact? Seems like a recruiting trick to me. Odd.
Matt (The Jungle (Cincy))
Thoughts on the Bengals needs or potential picks? Everyone has us locked in on Gresham but I'm not so sure. Also need a playmaker at FS and depth at WR/CB.
Matt Williamson (12:55 PM)
But-think about this: Isn't this just SO different than most Bengals' drafts? Their needs are really pretty minor all things considered. I do agree with your assessment and getting younger at WR makes sense. But overall, I would take the best player available approach. I just think though, in the end, that Cincy ends up with Taylor Mays.
Mike (Boca Raton)
PLEASE REMIND US ALL HOW TO FIND THE DRAFT DAY CHAT THAT YOU WILL BE HOSTING. I HAVEN'T SEEN IT IN THE PAST.thanks and god bless.
Matt Williamson (12:56 PM)
Oh-thanks. Actually, this is terrible, but I don't know the link off the top of my head. But it is called Cover it Live and I will be on (with several other hosts) more or less during the entire draft starting at 6PM tomorrow. You gotta stop by.
Steve (Prosser, WA)
If the Broncos don't draft Dez Bryant, are there any 2nd round WR's that can help them, or is the talent in the 2nd round not strong enough to make a difference?
Matt Williamson (12:58 PM)
Nice deep WR draft overall, but I would think that G Tate or A Benn would be the guys they would really want in round 2. Might have to move up a few spots to grab one of them in the 2nd round round though.
Matty!!!!!! Sorry for missing the vast majority of the chat. Happy Christmas Eve, Chat King!! No sleep at Casa de M-Dubb tonight.
Matt Williamson (12:58 PM)
Got that right Brother. Better late than never! Glad you arrived.
If the top 4 tackles are taken by the time the 49ers pick at #13, dosent given up a 2nd rounder for Gaither make a lot of sense?
Matt Williamson (12:59 PM)
For sure-if he can be had for that. If so, SF could leave this draft with Gaither, Haden and Kindle (for example)...not too shabby.
Matt Williamson (1:00 PM)
Folks, I am out. Great chat today. Really enjoyed it as always. I am also chatting again Friday and like I said, doing the Cover it Live all through the draft as it happens. Check out the podcasts from the past two days and we are also doing new podcasts on Thurs and Friday...busy week! Take care and try to get some sleep tonight. Won't be easy.
