Sean Burns (1:04 PM)
Hey lax fans, it's a big weekend coming up with the NCAA tournament kicking off at campus sites on Saturday and Sunday. We've got a trio of the key players for that big weekend joining us today for our weekly ESPN/IL chat, as we start with Stony Brook's Jordan McBride and newly-minted Tewaaraton Finalist Kevin Crowley and are later joined by Delaware Tewaaraton finalist Curtis Dickson. Jordan and Kevin are just settling in, so fire your questions and we'll get them going.
Nicole (LI)
What are your most favorite memories of this season so far?
Kevin Crowley (1:05 PM)
Definitely winning the America East championship... it meant a lot to everyone. but Saturday's game on ESPN is going to be awesome
Ben Davies (New Westminster, BC, Canada)
This question is for all three of you beauties. Individualy, what has been the most contributing factor to your success down south? Also, what do you feel makes Canadians in general effective goal scorers?Good luck in the tourney boys!cya soon
Jordan McBride (1:08 PM)
Having a group of guys that are great to play around and their able to put me in good positions to be successful. The size of the net is big too. In box the nets are 4x4 but in the outdoor game they are much bigger.
Kevin Crowley (1:09 PM)
Growing up playing box lacrosse helped immensely. playing the game from such a young age instilled a work ethic that helps me today. Deceptive shooting is the key. Being able to throw the goalie off makes scoring easier.
Sarah (New York)
Who were your biggest influences when you first started playing lacrosse? Did you play other sports growing up? What are some of your goals post-college, do you intend to play professionally?
Kevin Crowley (1:10 PM)
My grandfather was my biggest influence. I grew up playing basketball, golf, hockey and soccer.
Jordan McBride (1:10 PM)
Both my parents, and I played hockey
Jim (New Brunswick Canada)
I am a big fan of both of you and Stony Brook University. What do you think is the key to beating Denver this weekend?
Jordan McBride (1:11 PM)
We just gotta play our game. We got some guns but we have to be smart with the ball and maximize our opportunities.
Kevin Crowley (1:11 PM)
We just have to make sure we do a good job of possessing the ball and playing an intelligent game.
Roger (Freeport)
Congrats on your excellent year both personally and team. Good luck in the playoffs. With the exception of Stony Brook, the America East had a down year. What other America East players and team do you expect to give Stony Brook some competition next year.
Kevin Crowley (1:13 PM)
Vermont and Binghamton have some terrific young players to look out for.
Jordan McBride (1:13 PM)
Albany has a lot of injuries, but those guys will be back.
Rich (Riverhead LI)
McBride - what has affecting your scoring in the past four games? are defenses playing you differently, are you injured?
Jordan McBride (1:13 PM)
A lot more attention has been paid to shutting me off. It's not affecting the team though, it's making my teammates more effective.
Joey (LI, NY)
Any recommendations for camps to send my son to this summer where he can get recruited?
Jordan McBride (1:14 PM)
The Top 205 camp is always the best one, in my opinion.
Ben Davies (New Westminster, BC, Canada)
Hey Guys, congrats on getting this far! Having played with all three of you im not suprised. Whats the one aspect of box you have taken over back east and utilized in the field game?Good luck in the tourney guys! see ya soon.
Jordan McBride (1:16 PM)
My quick release and shooting because you're put in the tight areas. I just grip it and rip it.
Kevin Crowley (1:17 PM)
My vision and ability to find people who may not be open but I can find them and put it in the open stick.
salmon belly (BC)
Kevin, does it bother you that all the Salmon Bellie fans back home are going to be cheering on their new found star Payton Sanders and the Denver Pioneers over you and Jordan?
Kevin Crowley (1:18 PM)
Hahaha, hopefully I'll be a Salmonbellie soon enough. Rumor is Payton isn't coming north this summer, so you can cheer for me.
eric (Burnaby, B.C)
What do you miss the most about Canada when living in the states?
Kevin Crowley (1:19 PM)
We miss snowboarding. We also miss colored money.
rob (Long Island)
What makes this Stony Brook team special?
Kevin Crowley (1:19 PM)
WE have a close knit group as we're all friends with each other - coaches included.
Jordan McBride (1:19 PM)
A bunch of us live together and that helps too.
Tom Foolery (NY, NY)
Did you notice 2 of the 5 Tewaaraton Finalists are from BC? Congrats!
Kevin Crowley (1:21 PM)
Yeah, it's funny too because Dickson and I were on the same box lacrosse team back home this summer.
Ben (Coquitlam)
What do you guys think about players holding out from the teams they are drafted to in Senior Box? How are these leagues supposed to become more legitimate if top draft picks refuse to play for the teams they are drafted? If top players refuse to go to developing teams how the will the league ever become more competitive and how will lacrosse become as respected as sports like hockey if players think their too good to play for certain teams. Would a true competitor and star lacrosse player not take on the opportunity to be an important building block in a organization that is trying to build something with them? What are your takes on this?
Kevin Crowley (1:24 PM)
A lot of people wouldn't understand, but lacrosse is more than a game for me. The city of New Westminster has done so much to support and they've given me so much especially after the Mann Cup. All i want to do is give back to the community that's been so good to me.
Lauren Brown (Stony Brook, NY)
What is your favorite food?
Jordan McBride (1:25 PM)
Anything with Canadian bacon in it.
Kevin Crowley (1:26 PM)
Poutine (It's a french dish with fries, cheese curds and gravy)
Peter White (West Virginia, Mountain Mama)
How awesome is poutine? What is your favorite Canadian beverage? Who is your favorite hockey team
Kevin Crowley (1:28 PM)
Poutine is no joke. We're both Canucks fans.
rob (long island)
JordanWhat is the key to your shooting accuracy?
Jordan McBride (1:37 PM)
I've practiced so much that even though I may not see the net, I just shoot it and hit spots without knowing it
il Consigliere (li)
Whats the incoming recruiting class looking like at SB?
Kevin Crowley (1:37 PM)
Defensive-oriented
Ricky Lucas (Stony Brook)
Which of your teamates do u feel is the most underated player? your unsung hero?
Kevin Crowley (1:38 PM)
Chris Gignillat and Steven Waldeck
Jordan McBride (1:38 PM)
Charlie Paar and Michael Sopko
Freddie (NY)
Do you think having already played Denver this year will be an advantage to the team?
Jordan McBride (1:39 PM)
Anytime you play a team twice it helps.
Kevin Crowley (1:39 PM)
We had an early lead on Denver so we know we can score.
Rich (RiverHead)
what are your thoughts on the stony brook fan support. i.e students, the community, alumns
Kevin Crowley (1:41 PM)
Over the three years the support has increased year by year. The alumni and the fans have shown a lot of support.
Jordan McBride (1:41 PM)
Other student-athletes from Stony Brook and coaches are coming up to us wishing us good luck.
Adam (New York)
Does the ranking mean anything to you guys? Stony Brook has rarely fielded a team in any sport that has ranked so high nationally, or garnered so much national attention. That's gotta feel good, doesn't it?
Jordan McBride (1:42 PM)
It shows we've worked hard and well as a team.
Kevin Crowley (1:42 PM)
It's nice to get recognized, but at the end of the day it's about getting it done on the field.
Sean Burns (1:43 PM)
Alright folks, Kevin and Jordan have to head off to class, so we'll take a quick break and Delaware's Curtis Dickson will be by in about 15 minutes to take some questions from you guys, so post away and we'll get them in the mix as soon as he's here. If anybody has any general questions for IL staff, we'll happily answer them while we're waiting for Curtis.
Sean Burns (2:02 PM)
And Curtis is getting settled in. I've got a few questions for him to work on, so shoot your other ones whenever you can and we'll have him answer as many as he's able to before he has to head to class.
Sean Burns (2:11 PM)
We're gonna start with a few questions that were for everybody that Kevin and Curtis already answered:
Sean Burns (2:12 PM)
eric (Burnaby, B.C):What do you miss the most about Canada when living in the states?
Curtis Dickson (2:12 PM)
I definitely miss playing box lacrosse. It is what I grew up playing and when I have to go 9 and 10 months without it i start to go through some withdrawls.
Sean Burns (2:12 PM)
Chris (NJ):What do you think of Syracuse's recruiting for the 2010-2011 seasons?
Curtis Dickson (2:13 PM)
Syracuse always has great recruiting classes. They are such a highly regarded program they get a lot of the top recruits from all over the country wanting to go and play there. I am not too familiar with this particular class but I am sure it is nothing short of spectacular as usual.
Sean Burns (2:13 PM)
Ben Davies (New Westminster, BC, Canada):Hey Guys, congrats on getting this far! Having played with all three of you im not suprised. Whats the one aspect of box you have taken over back east and utilized in the field game?Good luck in the tourney guys! see ya soon.
Curtis Dickson (2:13 PM)
Whats up Benny. Definitely playing in tight spaces playing box has translated to good stick skills for the outdoor game.
Sean Burns (2:14 PM)
Nicole (LI):What are your most favorite memories of this season so far?
Curtis Dickson (2:14 PM)
Winning the CAA championship was definitely the highlight of our season so far. 5 weeks ago nobody expected to even see us in our conference tournament so to be able to get on a roll like we did and win it was pretty special.
Sean Burns (2:16 PM)
Joey (LI, NY):Any recommendations for camps to send my son to this summer where he can get recruited?
Curtis Dickson (2:16 PM)
The top 205 camp is definitely one of the big ones. Hot beds run out of right here in Delaware is also another good one that my coach runs.
Sean Burns (2:17 PM)
Ben Davies (New Westminster, BC, Canada):This question is for all three of you beauties. Individually, what has been the most contributing factor to your success down south? Also, what do you feel makes Canadians in general effective goal scorers?Good luck in the tourney boys! cya soon
Curtis Dickson (2:17 PM)
would say the biggest contributing factor is just practicing everyday and really getting a feel for the field lacrosse game down here. It is a lot different than box and it definitely takes some getting used to.
Sean Burns (2:17 PM)
Sarah (New York):Who were your biggest influences when you first started playing lacrosse? Did you play other sports growing up? What are some of your goals post-college, do you intend to play professionally?
Curtis Dickson (2:18 PM)
My biggest influence on me was definitely my father. He grew up playing and was a great player in the WLA back home in BC. He got me started at a very young age and have had a stick in my hand ever since. I played hockey soccer and baseball growing up as a kid I rarely ever had any free time. Yes I do hope to play professionally when I am done with school I think getting paid to play the sport you love is a pretty unbelievable opportunity.
ryan (long island)
who are your favorite teams to play against? least favorite?
Curtis Dickson (2:23 PM)
My favorite teams to play against are definitely all of our conference rivals like Towson and Drexel. It is impossible not to get up for games like those because we cant stand losing to each other and every game is always a war. I have to throw UMBC in there too I have had some pretty good success against them in my career for some reason. My least favorite teams to play against would have to be Georgetown because I went 0-4 against them in my career here at Delaware, we always seem to come up short against them.
Casey (Mass)
What are you and your team most looking forward to this weekend? Good Luck, score some goals.
Curtis Dickson (2:23 PM)
I think we are all just very anxious to actually play the game. All this hype and anticipation is killing us we just want to get out there and play.
Amanda (Long Island)
how r yu nd yur team getting ready for this big gamee?
Curtis Dickson (2:31 PM)
We are taking this just like any other game on our schedule. We come out and practice hard every day, watch a lot of film and try and know our opposition the best we can. We know this is going to be a very good North Carolina team we will be up against and need to be ready for anything.
Jon (DC)
What's the biggest difference between BC and Delaware
Curtis Dickson (2:32 PM)
The biggest difference between BC and Delaware is definitely sales tax and scenery. 0% sales tax here in Delaware compared to 13% I believe it is back home. Also Delaware isn't the most beautiful place in the world (no offense to our Delaware readers), but BC is definitely considered one of the nicest places to live with the mountains and everything else it's awesome.
Carter (Oregon)
How long have you been playing lacrosse? How much of that has been indoor and how long did it take to adjust to outdoor?
Curtis Dickson (2:33 PM)
I have been playing lacrosse since I was about 4 years old. It has been indoor since the day I started playing and have played ever since. It took me a little while to get used to the American outdoor game. I didn't actually see the field until halfway through my freshman season so it took me the whole fall and the better part of the spring to really get the hang of it.
Jon (DC)
Are you proud to be one of TWO Canadians nominated for the Tewaaraton? Do you think it legitimizes the box game to see guys like you have success in field?
Curtis Dickson (2:34 PM)
I am absolutely proud to be nominated. Canadians are just starting to break into the college field lacrosse scene and this just shows that we really can be impact players in this league and will be for many years to come. I hope me and Kev are just the first of many Canadians to be nominated in the near future. I do think it legitimizes the box lacrosse game and gets it some respect from people in these areas that are not really familiar with it.
Sean Burns (2:38 PM)
Alright everybody, Curtis has to head down for some other interviews at the Delaware field house - thanks again for taking the time to chat, and be sure to follow along on ESPNU and InsideLacrosse.com all weekend for coverage from every NCAA tournament game.
