AJ Mass (10:59 AM)
Good morning, gang. We're ready for the next hour of fantasy chattage. How about you? We'll get to as many questions as we can... who is up first?
Kris (st louis)
Is Stanton or Posey the more likely top 50 player in 2011?
AJ Mass (11:00 AM)
I'm thinking Stanton. Part of Posey's appeal is the fact he's a catcher, but if the Giants are already moving him around the field a bit down in the minors, perhaps he's not going to be a full-time backstop in the bigs.
Good Morning. Now that Rollins is back I need to clear a spot by dropping a player. In a volume of empty matter space, who would you recommend dropping out of Smoak, Beckham, and Chris Perez?
AJ Mass (11:01 AM)
I think you can safely send Beckham packing here. Rollins will cover your MI spot.
AJ.......what's your take on Kevin Slowey ? Most websites have him rated a top 40 pitcher but his periphials just do not impress..
AJ Mass (11:02 AM)
Completely agree. At best he's a spot-starter, with no business on a roster in 10-team mixed.
From TODAY forward, Lackey or Strasburg? Doumit or C. Santana?
AJ Mass (11:04 AM)
From TODAY forward, Lackey and Doumit. Until they arrive, they haven't arrived.
Chris Fiegler (Latham,NY)
Who do you think is the worst pitcher of 2010?
AJ Mass (11:06 AM)
I'd say the one who has hurt your team the most for being in your lineup so far is Ryan Rowland-Smith.
What's up AJ? Will guys like Leake and J.Garcia have an innings cap if their teams are competing for the NL Central crown in September? Should I "sell high" on them in June?
AJ Mass (11:09 AM)
You might want to sell high based on the "second time around" syndrome that usually rears up to bite novice starters who start strong... but if anyone thinks the Reds know what the words "pitch count" mean, you don't know Cincy. Similarly, Garcia is not your typical newcomer.
Do you think Strasburg will be on an innings count when he gets called up...and do you think he gets shut down towards the end of the season? Thanks AJ!
AJ Mass (11:11 AM)
I think I remember reading the number 150 in the preseason as the total number of IP the team was targeting for him this season... but you always have to see how stressful each inning is. There's a huge difference between a 9 pitch inning and a 30 pitch inning. If the Nats are out of it in September, sure they might call it quits a few weeks early, but if they're in a wild card race, then no.
Thoughts on Joel Piniero? Would you rather have him, Matusz, or Pavano?
AJ Mass (11:12 AM)
Take away those tow incredibly bad outings and Pineiro has been as good as I thought he would be. I'd rather have him, with Matusz a close second.
Phil (Phoenixville, PA)
Lost Asdrubal last night, deep 7x7 who do I want: Valbuena, C. Guzman, Betancourt, Brendan Ryan? Or should I just jump off a bridge?
AJ Mass (11:14 AM)
Guzman isn't going to hurt your batting average, but offers little else. Might take the chance with Valbuena.
Johnny Cueto had another great start last night, are you buying his return?
AJ Mass (11:16 AM)
Not totally. Certainly he's working his way back into a fantasy possibility, and if you have him you want to keep him on the mound while he's hot, but he's not yet back into "completely trustworthy" territory.
What kind of value do you expect trading a top closer for a hitter?
AJ Mass (11:17 AM)
I'd expect a top hitter in return. If you're trading a closer you're probably sending him to someone who needs saves badly. Don't settle for less in return.
Reasonable expectation for marlon byrd?
AJ Mass (11:19 AM)
Finishing the year at .300 or so, 20 HR.
AJ, rank the top Third Basemen for the rest of the way. Longoria, A-Rod, Zimmerman, Pablo, anyone else....
AJ Mass (11:21 AM)
Evan's my pre-season MVP pick, so I rank him at 1. A-Rod next. Wright may enter the discussion if/when Beltran returns but there's a dropoff there.
Time to drop Asdrubel? Any underr the radar MI types you recommend?
AJ Mass (11:23 AM)
It does not look like he'll be back again. Valbuena gets immediate PT boost, but Jason Donald looms in the minors and may well be called up this week.
Evan isn't THAT different from Zimmerman, is he?
AJ Mass (11:25 AM)
He has more speed and a better overall supporting cast. Is he THAT different? Maybe not. But there's a definite tier between the two.
Bryan (Pittsburgh, Pa)
Whats up AJ!! Do you like Medlen this week as a 2 start guy vs NYM and PGH?
AJ Mass (11:27 AM)
I do. Two starts from a borderline top 50 so far... weak hitting Pirates. Yup.
Steve (New York)
So you are saying a top closer is worth a top hitter? Am I reading this correctly or are you just trying to say try to get a top hitter. Any competitive league not over 12 teams is not going to do such a deal.
AJ Mass (11:30 AM)
I'm saying that there's no need to help out another team to the level that giving them a top closer will help them without getting something in return. It makes no sense to give up Francisco Cordero to a team who stands to gain six points in the standings as a result for Edgar Renteria. If you're not finding takers, then don't deal.
Boesch or JD Drew
AJ Mass (11:33 AM)
Absolutely dealing with an incredibly small sample size here. Certainly Boesch has looked good so far, but I need to see more to feel comfortable with him for a two-month stretch. Still, the fact he's still in Detroit and Sizemore is not is a very good sign for his staying power.
What's up AJ? What do you think of Chacon tonight? He scored a perfect 10 on the match-up rater but is 19th overall on the list.
AJ Mass (11:35 AM)
The matchup rater is flawed when you're dealing with small sample sizes, so a lot of rookies or other pitchers with only a few starts over the past few years often come up as all or nothing, 10 or 1. So don't read too much into that number for those pitchers.
Hey AJ whats your take on J. Ely? I think Duchsherer and his hip have surgery written all over it, and I have a chance to pick him up.
AJ Mass (11:37 AM)
I agree. Duke is looking quite feeble and talking about the similarities to how he felt the last time. Ely didn't impress me in his first start, but has rebounded well. Certainly going to get you better numbers than a goose egg...
Ellsbury a 1st round pick?? Can we now admit that was crazy?
AJ Mass (11:38 AM)
No we can't. This is one of those we won't ever truly know because of the injury. I'd be happy to admit I was wrong if he were hitting .200 with 1 stolen base in 150 AB. But, nobody can ever predict injuries.
Shaun Marcum: Sell high or can he keep it up?
AJ Mass (11:40 AM)
I'm a believer. I think some pitchers will fall farther than him and some will surge ahead of him in the overall rankings as the season moves on, but he'll be able to maintain his level of performance.
DD (Ann Arbor)
Out-of-body experience for E-Jax last night? Numbers look pretty good in the last two outings. . sign of things to come?
AJ Mass (11:43 AM)
I don't think Edwin is truly nearly as bad as he was in April, but I also want no part of him going forward. I just don't think he's a fit in that ballpark and while I might throw him in there on the road from time to time... just no.
Ryan (East Lansing)
Which OF do you trust more, Cody Ross or Jose Bautista? Dropping Beckham for one of them.
AJ Mass (11:45 AM)
Bautista. I was really high on Ross in the preseason, but he's just not giving the power I expected.
drop beckham for jose lopez?
AJ Mass (11:47 AM)
No I wouldn't. Lopez has been just as dreary, if not more of a disappointment.
Rodny (Boston, Mass)
What about Johny Gomes? - he's looked good all of May would you drop Smoak for him
AJ Mass (11:48 AM)
I'd stick with Smoak for now. Gomes doesn't have a whole heck of a lot of growth left in those numbers, and Justin does.
Corey Hart (Brew Crew)
Anyone noticed what I have done the last couple of days? Is this a sign of things to come?
AJ Mass (11:50 AM)
Hart will be OK, but he's always been a 4/5 OF in my mind and nothing more.
AJ, thoughts on Wandy Rodriguez? Can he be trusted going forward?
AJ Mass (11:52 AM)
Houston is not going to win too many games going forward, and if Roy goes elsewhere, that's going to also impact Wandy's success as teams won't have to make adjustments from game to game. I am concerned here.
Shaun Marcum (Toronto)
What current starters would you compare me to value wise?
AJ Mass (11:53 AM)
Phil Hughes, Brad Penny.
Matthew (Columbia, NJ)
Should I drop Brad Lidge? I am concerned he won't be healthy at all this year.
AJ Mass (11:54 AM)
Without a DL spot to stash, I'd definitely not waste the roster room here.
Joe (Cape Cod)
A. McCutchen or J. Upton for 2010 and BEYOND?
AJ Mass (11:55 AM)
McCutchen. Especially once he gets traded to Boston or New York in two season when the Pirates decide he costs too much to keep.
Is HanRam a bum? I thought he played tough, but how can he try and excuse that half hearted attempt last night?
AJ Mass (11:57 AM)
I don't think he can. However, he's not the first player to get benched for lack of hustle and he won't be the last. Once he gets back in the lineup, he'll either put up or completely shut down... I'm trading him now myself just in case it is the latter.
What do you mean "teams won't have to make adjustments from game to game" with regard to Oswalt leaving Houston? Do day-to-day lineup changes really have that much impact since most of the better players are everyday players? Maybe I'm misunderstanding. Just curious. Thanks.
AJ Mass (11:59 AM)
There's the lefty/righty adjustment as well as the fact that sometimes a pitcher is successful because they are so different in repertoire from the person before them in a rotation. A guy with an 85 mph fast ball looks like 100 mph if Tim Wakefield pitches the day before, for example.
Old, young: Leake or Pavano? Who do you like going forward?
AJ Mass (12:00 PM)
Leake, at least until Dusty makes his arm fall off.
AJ Mass (12:01 PM)
Thanks all. We're out of time. I enjoyed the chat and I'm sorry we can never get to them all. I try and answer as many on Twitter as I can, though this week, well, we'll be OD'ing on LOST. Until the next time, be seeing you...
