Bruce (2:04 PM)
Hey.. thanks for dropping by.. slow morning here in LA. Or I should say not the most productive morning.. anyhow.. glad you're here.
They're saying "Boooooooooo".
Bruce (2:05 PM)
yeah, they're always doing that.
What are the chances Mark Ingram wins the Heisman again?
Bruce (2:06 PM)
Longshot.. only Archie G has done it before and he didn't have Trent Richardson nabbing some of his carries.
Hey Bruce, Is it crazy for me to think Purdue has the best QB in the Big ten?
Bruce (2:07 PM)
Not crazy.. maybe misguided... I like Marve and think he has good skills but Wisconsin, OSU and Iowa all have more proven QBs.
Jesse (Lincoln, Nebraska)
In your opinion, what do you think the conferences will look like in 5 years? Do you think Nebraska will still be in the Big 12, or will we have moved to the Big 10? Or will all this shaking up really cause a shake up and the Big 12 gets dissolved in the process?
Bruce (2:07 PM)
My guess for now, this week, is that Nebraska will be a Big Ten team.
Chris Fiegler (Latham,NY)
Who do you think will be the best College Football team Overall in 2010 after the players went to the NFL?
Bruce (2:08 PM)
My #1 is going to be Alabama.
Max (Ocala, Fl)
Bruce, Heather Dinich the ACC blogger recently posted the best/worst case scenario for FSU, for the best she thinks FSU will 11 games but still lose to Florida at home, do you believe that FSU is gaining on Florida? With no Tim Tebow anymore Urban Meyer will show that he is mediocrity at best, like what happened to Billy Donovan after he won 2 titles and his players left.
Bruce (2:10 PM)
Heather and I are on a similar page I think.. I think FSU will be very good. I like FSU's chances to beat UF this year. I don't expect UF to drop that far (in the Billy D analogy) because you can get better faster and worse faster in hoops because 2-3 guys make so much more of a difference in that sport. UF still has a lot of talent.
Stevey Nipas CA [via mobile]
Best sophmore Linebacker in the Nation is... Kid from BC,Vontaze Burfict, Manti Teo? Or other?
Bruce (2:12 PM)
Like all three and glad you meantioned Luke from BC. He is super productive. I'm writing about him in the blog today... If Burfict becomes more disciplined I think he has the biggest upside. Matt Lubick who coached at Ole Miss when Patrick Willis was there and was with ASU last year said he's a lot like Willis only with a bigger mean streak when he plays.
Sean (Oklahoma City, OK)
How do good is Cincinatti going to be this year? They lost their head coach and starting QB, but my Sooners have to play them on the road. Do we need to worry?
Bruce (2:14 PM)
Yeah, I'd be worried just because OU has struggled away from the state.. Cincy still has a good experienced QB and Butch Jones is a good coach with a good staff. They have experience following Brian Kelly and there's something to be said for making that transition.. still, I am not ready to call a UC win here. I think OU is being undervalued some in the preseason talk. They have a lot of gifted guys who could've left for the NFL back.
If offered, should Boise State accept the invitation to the MWC even though Utah and Possibly TCU and BYU may be on there way out? If yes, is it possible to put some sort of escape clause in the contract in case the MWC's big three leave?
Bruce (2:17 PM)
Yeah, if those three were to bolt that would not be good... I guess anything is possible with escape clauses.
wat do think are the chances that mizzou goes to the big ten
Bruce (2:19 PM)
Very good. I think Mizzou and Nebraska will eventually be in the Big Ten or whatever they call Delanyland.
Steven (Knoxville, TN)
Bruce, Who will have the better first year? Derek Dooley or Lane Kiffin?
Bruce (2:19 PM)
Wins wise? Kiffin. I think Tennessee may go 6-6. I'll be surprised if USC doesn't win at least 10.
Joshua (Memphis, TN)
Hey, Bruce. Quick two-part question: Can the University of Memphis succeed under Coach Larry Porter? And if Memphis gets into a BCS conference, do top local recruits in the Southeast consider Memphis a legitimate place to play?
Bruce (2:21 PM)
Memphis is a tough place to build a football program. No one has really done it. I'd heard Porter may a really good run at Lache Seastrunk but ultimately he still picked Oregon... Memphis is lacking in facilities big time. There's too much uncertainty with it. You're not going to outrecruit SEC schools who are all surrounding you for bigtime players.
Will (Tampa, FL)
Now that Randy got his extension at The U lets look back to the field. You previously stated this Miami team has a ton of talent. Is Shannon the man to get them to the next level? He has proven himself off the field (grades, APR, no trouble) but is that enough?
Bruce (2:22 PM)
I think it is. It was a smart move by UM to give him the extension. Now we have to see if his recruits who are sophomores and juniors now can prove he's got a program ready to make the next step and that's to go to a BCS bowl. I think they have the personnel to win a BCS title in the next two years.
Jared (Atlanta, GA)
Bruce, love your work my man. What are your thoughts on the Oklahoma/FSU game in week 2? Is it too much to expect Jimbo Fisher to win that game on the road?
Bruce (2:23 PM)
Thanks! No it's not too much to expect since you have a solid, very experienced OLine and a proven big time QB in Ponder.
With USC getting eraly commitment do you think Lane Kiffin is making an early statment about recruiting?
Bruce (2:24 PM)
Yeah, he is. He's a good recruiter with a great recruiting staff.
Michael (Salt Lake City)
If you were to vote on a national champion to replace USC in 2004, would you take Auburn, Oklahoma or Utah?
Bruce (2:26 PM)
Tough call.. honestly, it'd be hard to give a title to a team that lost 55-19 in a title game. Aside from blowing out a suspect Pitt team in a BCS bowl, I don't recall that much about that Utah team with Alex Smith.. It's so long ago now. I know Auburn had that stacked backfield...Do you give it to anyone? I wonder if Auburn would've still pushed Tub out had he led them to a "national title"... weird all around.
Blick (Salt Lake City)
What is your perception of Tyrod Taylor as a passer? If Boise State gears up to stop VTs great running game will he be able to burn them with the pass?
Bruce (2:27 PM)
He's inconsistent. But he had been working with very inexperienced WRs for the most part too till now.
Chris (Myrtle Beach)
If Kyle Parker returns and Clemson's defense plays to their ability, do you think they have a shot at the ACC championship?
Bruce (2:27 PM)
Sure.. The ACC is going to be strong at the top with VT, Miami, FSU, UNC and also GT and Clemson.
Bruce,Any chance that the NCAA is going to make a ruling today on the USC case? Thanks!
Bruce (2:28 PM)
Who knows? There's been so much speculation about this is the day or this is the week and we still haven't heard anything.
Hey Bruce,Obviously, conventional wisdom says that Coach Kelly doesn't turn ND around in a season. But is it at least POSSIBLE that the Irish return to national prominence in the next 5 years? Or are they doomed to eternal mediocrity?
Bruce (2:29 PM)
Why not? ND can still be a powerhouse. It just takes the right head coach. I think they have that now.
Which team has the best staple of RB's in the nation?
Bruce (2:30 PM)
VT or Alabama.
Predict the NCAA sanctions?
Bruce (2:32 PM)
Probation, 12-15 scholarships taken away over four years, wins taken away from the 2005 season. The interesting part in this is IF the NCAA can prove Bush had done things to jeopardize his eligibility, HOW FAR back does it go? It's one thing if it's 2005 because Texas won that title and yes Bush won that Heisman, but if its 2004.. different story...
Bruce (2:34 PM)
If your USC and Bush was found guilty, do you fret so much that he could have HIS Heisman taken away? After all, he'd also have risked the program's standing with his action, assuming the NCAA can prove it. Yeah, that Heisman trophy is something the school touts, but a BCS title is obviously a much bigger deal.
Bruce (2:35 PM)
Otherwise taking away wins from seasons years ago doesn't really seem to matter much.
Bruce, why doesn't Tom Savage get more pub compared to some other young QB's? He seems like he has all the tools (size, arm, smarts, leadership) and got better during the year. If he was on ND, USC or Texas would he be the next coming of Dan Marino?
Bruce (2:36 PM)
It's early in his career.. also he's going to have to do it against top competition. But yeah there are reasons to be excited about him.
ryan (beverly hills)
who would you say are the top 5 powerhouse programs in the last decade obviously teams like nd haven't been winning so they wouldn't be included
Bruce (2:37 PM)
Top 5 programs this decade... USC, Texas, Ohio State, Florida and LSU I'll say.
If you were the NCAA, what would your penalties be for USC?
Bruce (2:38 PM)
It's hard to say because I don't know what the NCAA can prove. Remember they dont have subpoena power.
How hot is Les Miles' seat right now?
Bruce (2:39 PM)
It's moist. It will get toasty if LSU loses to UNC in the opener in ATL. Expectations are sky high there. FWIW the Tigers are recruiting really well so far though.
Heidi (Las Vegas)
Pat Forde argued for the Big Ten to just add one school like Nebraska. Wouldn't that just open up criticism by some that the Big Ten made all this fuss and didn't go big with expansion? Isn't this a can't-win situation (more/less)?
Bruce (2:41 PM)
I don't know if the Big Ten made all of the fuss or they just let the media trip all over ourselves to do that (and in the process remind people that, yeah, while the SEC has won the last four BCS titles, the Big Ten is king when it comes to making money per team).
Anthony (Baton Rouge)
Is Alabama's front seven good enough to help hide a young/inexperienced secondary early in the season?
Bruce (2:41 PM)
I think so.. Josh Chapman, Dareus and Dont'a Hightower by the way have plenty of experience.
Is Ohio State at a disadvantage with the number of sports the athletic department supports (most in the NCAA)? For example, Ohio State has the No. 2 budget in the NCAA, but twice as many sports as Texas and the same for those SEC schools. Disadvantage?
Bruce (2:42 PM)
Honestly, I never thought about it. OSU seems to do everything in a big way though so my gut feeling is the Buckeyes don't operate at a disad.
Can the offense of Arkansas out-gun it's way to an SEC Title? They have the best stable of WR's in the country and the best arm in the country in Mallet, along with a nice, top 10 stable of RB's
Bruce (2:43 PM)
Possible but that D is really shaky.. They're a little like A&M only without a Von Miller.
Rob (Boise, Id)
Which team has the best WR Tandem in the nation?
Bruce (2:43 PM)
Your school is in the mix with Pettis and Titus.
Baffled how you pick Texas instead of OU for top 5 of the decade considering OU won the conference twice as much as Texas, had the same national titles, more title game appearances, more Heismans, etc.
Bruce (2:45 PM)
Nothing that ever happens in a chat should be "baffling"... it all moves so fast. I think it comes down to the last five years in my mind. OU's title seems so long ago now.
Patrick (Mobile, AL)
Bruce, please justify to me how Lane Kiffin is worth $4 mill a year. He is not even remotely the same caliber of Saban, Meyer, or Brown.
Bruce (2:48 PM)
He's is NOT making four million a year. I reported that this week. That figure was wrong. He's not making close to four million either. If Kiffin has a big run at USC in the next 4-5 years, he's going to end up making probably more than $4 mil a year though. But we'll see. You're right about what the other three have already proven. Put Stoops and Tressel in that group too because of how they rebuilt those places.
Bruce, whats a good year for ND in 2010?
Bruce (2:48 PM)
Should Boise State fans be worried about Kellen Moore because he has struggled during the Fiesta Bowl and again during the 2 scrimmages this spring??
Bruce (2:48 PM)
Spring scrimmages??? No. The guy had a 39-3 TD-INT ratio.
bruce- i want to be sports journalist- i am in HS.. i am trying to decide Mizzou or Texas?
Bruce (2:49 PM)
You can't go wrong with either. Just try and make good connections and get good internships.
Assuming no injuries, who will have the better defense in the LSU/UNC opener?
Bruce (2:50 PM)
UNC. No one has more talent on D.
Can UCLA win 6 games next year?
Bruce (2:50 PM)
Yeah, they have a couple of outstanding players on D and Kevin Prince should be better at QB.
Matt (Grand Rapids)
Can Michigan win enough games to keep RichRod around?
Bruce (2:51 PM)
Yes, I think they will win at least 7 and probably go something like 8-4.
joe (Charleston, SC)
Bruce do you think usc gamecocks can ever get over the hump with spurrier? at what point does the annual 7-5/6-6 no longer cut the grain?
Bruce (2:53 PM)
I don't know.. that's a good question. I thought this could be a good spot for them but they looked awful in end of the season. Does Stephen Garcia finally make a big jump? They also stepped up and really paid some of their assistants. Expectations are higher and UF has taken a step back. If there was ever a shot for Carolina to win the East it's now.
Tyrod Taylor inconsistent? Last year he led the ACC in Pass Efficiency...
Bruce (2:55 PM)
Yes, inconsistent. He was under 50 percent in four games last season.
Bruce -Not to get technical, but I don't think Tressel rebuilt tOSU; Cooper had a winning percentage of over .800 before Tressel came in
Bruce (2:56 PM)
Thats a good point. He definitely elevated OSU but he didn't have to do the overhaul that Stoops did at OU.
Is this the year Pitt overcomes Cinci and wins the Big East?
Bruce (2:57 PM)
I think so. They have two fantastic players on offense in Dion Lewis and Jonathan Baldwin and there's still some playmakers on D.
You clearly prefer one line questions - understandable. What do you expect from Miami's O line this year?
Bruce (2:58 PM)
It should be improved. It'll be much more athletic than in years past. Center is a question mark because Tyler Horn is inexperienced and who knows if Brandon Linder, the hyped OL recruit can overtake him. The biggest reason for optimism is RT Jermaine Johnson, who is probably the most athletic OT they've had there in years.
What are the chances TCU makes it to another BCS bowl game this year
Bruce (2:59 PM)
Pretty good. The offense should be explosive.. expect a big season from QB Andy Dalton.
In your opinion, who are the top five WR's in the nation?
Bruce (3:00 PM)
Mike Floyd, AJ Green, DeAndre Brown, Jon Baldwin, Ryan Broyles, Julio Jones..
Pat(Carson City, NV) [via mobile]
How will Booby Hauck do in his 1st year at UNLV?
Bruce (3:01 PM)
I think it'll take a few years to get that program in bowl contention.
Richard (Greensboro, NC)
Who has a better chance of overtaking the Hokies for the ACC Coastal: UNC or Miami?
Bruce (3:03 PM)
Miami has more balance and more firepower on offense. Also I think it'll be asking a lot for VT to win back to back road trips to UNC and then Miami. It's better to get them the second stop than the first.
Joey (Florence, AL)
So you think UNC has more talent than Bama on defense? Just trying to make sure thats what you said...
Bruce (3:04 PM)
It is. I like Bama's D and I think it'll be better than people think but they still have a bunch of unproven guys out there.. UNC will have the fastest LB crew in the country and arguably the best DE in Robert Quinn.
Trey (Dallas, TX)
Bruce, you left Oklahoma off that list of powerhouse programs. Went to 4 NC games, won 1 and went to 3 other BCS games. I know the struggled to win but those are pretty impressive numbers.
Bruce (3:04 PM)
I know. I covered that a bit ago..
Bruce (3:05 PM)
Three more questions...
Is there any chance that Oklahoma recieves that national championship for 2004? I was watching that game while donating some time to the Oklahoma D.O.C. and I caught all kinds of flack from everywhere. I'm just curious.
Bruce (3:07 PM)
I would really, really doubt it.
Bruce (3:08 PM)
I don't think anyone would get the national title awarded. As for the AP title, the AP voters just let Brian Cushing stand as Rookie of the Year, granted this would be a different group of voters, but who knows.
Bruce (3:09 PM)
Glad to see it happening again and was sad to see it end years ago. It's good for college football. More matchups like this are great for the game.. We talk about Boise-VT almost every week. That's a great thing.
Love your blog Bruce. Do you think ND will be in contention for the National Championship within 4 years under Bruce Kelly?
Bruce (3:10 PM)
Thanks James.. In contention in four years? Yes. I think so. I think Brian Kelly is the right guy there.
Allan (Los Angeles)
Given the chance what do you think sc runs the score up on stanford?
Bruce (3:12 PM)
It's the given the chance part. Stanford will really miss Toby, but they still have a lot coming back. Blowing them out of their own stadium won't be easy.
Bruce (3:13 PM)
Thanks for all of the questions. If I didn't get to yours, send it to me via Twitter at BFeldmanESPN.
