Chat with Katie Smith
Smith signed with Washington in March.
Welcome to SportsNation! On Wednesday, we'll be visited by 12-year WNBA veteran, and Washington Mystics guard, Katie Smith to chat about the new season.
Smith joined her third WNBA team in March when she signed a free agent contract with Washington. She spent the last four and a half seasons with Detroit, winning two titles, including 2008 when she won the WNBA Finals MVP.
Smith has averaged 15.7 points per game over her career, while shooting 36.6 percent on 3-pointers and 86.3 percent from the free throw line. So far this season, Smith is averaging 14 points per game in two Washington wins.
Send your questions now and join Smith Wednesday at 3 p.m. ET!

Mystics' guard Katie Smith will stop by shorty to chat about her new team and what we can expect from the WNBA this season.
Katie Smith (3:10 PM)
I'm really excited to be back for another season. Excited to be in a new town and on a new team. Let's start!
Katie, Do you have any pre-game rituals?
Katie Smith (3:10 PM)
I usually grab a cup of coffee before I hit the gym. That's my only real ritual.
Why Washington over Tulsa? Your leadership is missed!
Katie Smith (3:12 PM)
I wanted to go somewhere where I was familiar with the coaches and that was close to home. It's a great place for me to ride off into the sunset and end my career within the next year or two.
what is it like playing with such an outstanding player like marissa coleman
Katie Smith (3:13 PM)
Marissa came back this year ready to go after working hard in the offseason. It's real easy to play with her and I'm looking forward to getting to know her on and off the court.
kevin (macon ga)
You had a great rivalry with Sheryl Swoopes. Do you think she'll be back in the WNBA someday?
Katie Smith (3:14 PM)
I hope so. We had a great rivalry from college on and I would love to see her come back. It would be great for the fans to say goodbye and send her off in the right way. You never know, she might pop up somewhere if the situation is right.
kevin (macon ga)
Who's a better player, Katie Smith today or the Katie Smith of 2001 who led the league in scoring?
Katie Smith (3:15 PM)
(Laughing) That's a good question. I can't say one is better than the other but they are different. In 2001, my job was to score and be that threat but now my job is to do a little bit of everything.
Ron Berry (Baltimore, Md.)
Will you try to actively recruit both Cheryl Ford and or Deanna Nolan to sign with the Mystics. (I'm a season ticket holder) Best Wishes Katie, Welcome to D.C.
Katie Smith (3:16 PM)
(Laughing) I've asked some of my teammates from Detroit already and I would love to play with them again. I loved playing with Deanna and would love to see her back on the court playing in the WNBA.
Katie being in dc what should the fans see from the mystics this year? A playoff appearance?
Katie Smith (3:18 PM)
I really do believe that we should be in the playoffs. We have the ability and the talent to do that. We have to stay consistent and play on the defensive end. If everyone is willing to do their part on a night-to-night basis then we should make a playoff run.
What is it like playing professional baseketball? Any nice perks?
Katie Smith (3:19 PM)
I'm a Nike athlete so that's a nice perk. Meeting people and being around celebrities is always a nice perk too. It opens doors for you a allows you to do different things.
Hey Katie, Congrats on a great start to the Mystics' season! What was the hardest part about deciding not to follow the Shock to Tulsa and going through free agency instead?
Katie Smith (3:21 PM)
The hardest part was leaving my teammates. The people who I've had a great ride with and have developed friendships with. But the coaches weren't going to Tulsa and some of the players weren't going either so the best thing for me to do was to find a place that I would be happy and can end my career.
Who's your favorite player to play against? It's always fun to watch you battle players like Diana Taurasi and Tamika Catchings.
Katie Smith (3:22 PM)
(Lauging) I have to say DT is one of my favorites to play against. It's tough but fun at the same time. Catch is also a battle but a fun player to play against. I think the fans like it more than we do.
Gwen Carrow (Warren, MI)
Hi Katie,Congratulations on going to the Washington Mystics. My daughter and I will surely miss seeing you play in person. We wish you the best during this season. My daughter will be going to high school next year and she's a pretty good 3 point shooter. She wants to go to college and hopefully play in the WNBA. What advise can you give her to reach this goal? PS We will miss watching you and Deanna play together but look forward to this new season. You may not remember but the day you signed and actually took the time to look at my daughters Detroit Shock scrapbook was the coolest day for her. Thanks for being a great role model for young girls. Thanks!Gwen Carrow
Katie Smith (3:24 PM)
Thank you for all the support over my years in Detroit. To your daughter, just work hard. Be versatile and be able to do a lot of things on the court. And most of all just enjoy it and have fun with the game.
Do you think a woman will ever play in the NBA?
Katie Smith (3:25 PM)
I think we are physically talented enough and that we have the skill to but I don't know. That is a big question mark.
Hey Katie, welcome to DC. I grew up there and miss it so much. How are you adjusting to it? Any crazy getting lost stories? Cant wait to see the team when you come to San Antonio!
Katie Smith (3:26 PM)
(Laughing) I love DC, there's always a lot going on. I've gotten lost plenty of times so thank God for GPS.
What's gotten into Monique Currie? She's been on fire the first two games.
Katie Smith (3:27 PM)
She came back shooting the ball really well but her attack mentality has gotten better. That will be crucial for the rest of the season.
Ellen (Lusby, MD)
Katie, welcome to the Mystics! What has surprised you the most about the team thus far?
Katie Smith (3:28 PM)
I can't say I'm surprised about anything so far. I think how we've adjusted to each other so far and that we have come together to play well is a great thing but I'm not surprised by it.
Katie Smith (3:30 PM)
Thanks for chatting. Follow the Mystics; we're excited about the season! I hope everybody stays healthy and enjoys their season.
Buzzmaster (3:30 PM)
