AJ Mass (10:58 AM)
FIP FIP Hooray! We're back for another hour of fantasy chattage. Who's going to bat leadoff for today's shenanigans?
CK (San Diego)
Drop Max Scherzer or Anibal for Gio?
AJ Mass (11:00 AM)
I'd drop Anibal. Scherzer will be erratic, but the K-factor keeps him around.
Figgins or Jose Lopez the rest of the way? I'm not desperate for SB's
AJ Mass (11:02 AM)
Figgins will have more value, but that's only because of the steals. If you don't need them, and are looking for some HR help, then Lopez is the guy.
TK (Rochester, NY)
Is Rios a legit top 5 outfielder this year? Can he maintain this pace?
AJ Mass (11:04 AM)
Absolutely a top 5. I think he won't maintain this pace, which has him as No. 2 overall player in baseball... but he's not going to slide too much.
Greinke or Josh Johnson for the rest of the season?
AJ Mass (11:05 AM)
Double J. Zack isn't winning, and unless we finally abolish that category from fantasy, that's too much of an albatross for him to overcome.
From today forward how would you rank Liriano, Price, Bucholtz?
AJ Mass (11:06 AM)
You have them in the right order, but I'd put Francisco way ahead of the other two.
Tomas Perez (Chico, CA)
Jasyon Werth/Cliff Lee for Ryaun Braun/Shaun Marcum -- which side do you like?
AJ Mass (11:08 AM)
Lee a little bit better than Marcum. Braun a lot better than Werth.
How should we value Reyes going forward in 2010?
AJ Mass (11:10 AM)
I think he's going to continue to have a so-so season. There will be a few stretches where he improves his overall BA, but generally speaking, we're looking at an 8th-9th Rounder if we redrafted today.
Strasburg! Strasburg! Strasburg! Strasburg! Strasburg! Strasburg! Strasburg! Strasburg! Strasburg! Strasburg! Strasburg! Strasburg! Strasburg! Strasburg! Strasburg! Strasburg! Strasburg! Strasburg!
AJ Mass (11:11 AM)
Never heard of him.
After the big names in SS (Tulo, HanRam, DJ, JRoll) who is really showing you something worthwhile?
AJ Mass (11:12 AM)
Nobody really. Andrus is all steals and I'm not buying Gonzo's power. Stephen Drew would be next, but there's a large gap.
Injured pitchers - who would you stash in an open DL spot? Bedard or Webb?
AJ Mass (11:13 AM)
I think Bedard has a better chance of actually pitching this year.
Is Chapman droppable? I don't see him helping out this year?
AJ Mass (11:15 AM)
This is the problem with the youngsters... very few come up early, and fewer still make an impact. I never saw Chapman helping fantasy teams in 2010.
I'm sure this is a popular question. What are your expectations of Michael Stanton? Worth owning in standard 10 team, mixed leagues?
AJ Mass (11:17 AM)
I see a lot of K's. I'm not optimistic for this season with the jump from Double-A. In shallow leagues, I want no part. Of course, odd man out will likely be Maybin, so you can send him packing.
Is Lincecum going to be a top 5 pitcher from here on? His last four starts have me very nervous!
AJ Mass (11:18 AM)
He's fallen in my rankings, but only to No. 14. That's not too bad, and I expect him to work it out and return to top-10 form, minimum.
AJ: Parker Posey can rake. Keep him over last year's models, Wieters? Montero?
AJ Mass (11:19 AM)
House of Yes.
What do you watch now that LOST is over? Which starting pitchers would you target for Utley? Utley for C Lee fair deal?
AJ Mass (11:21 AM)
I guess Fringe would be my show now, but other than that, I'm sticking to reality shows like Big Brother when it returns. I think if you could get Lee for Utley I don't hesitate to do so.
You said Lee isnt that much better than Marcum. Who are some SP in Marcum's value-range? Romero, Hanson, Nolasco?
AJ Mass (11:22 AM)
That was to be taken as a compliment. I think both are top 10 fantasy options right now. I love the fact that the Blue Jays let em throw and aren't sticking to pitch counts.
Pat [via mobile]
Wainwright is a top __ pitcher the rest of the way.
AJ Mass (11:23 AM)
Is Fringe any good?
AJ Mass (11:23 AM)
Surprisingly so. Found its way after the first few episodes, though I did not love the Season 2 finale.
What do you project for Jaime Garcia? Obviously he cannot keep up this pace, but how far does he fall?
AJ Mass (11:24 AM)
Right now I have Garcia projected as a mid-range No. 3 starter.
Popular opinion among your colleagues is that Morneau will disappoint in the second half of the year, and that we should unload him. First of all, do you agree with that thesis? Second, what level SP would you target for a talent like Morneau?
AJ Mass (11:26 AM)
If you're expecting .370 you will be disappointed. However, I don't see why he can't hit .330 and remain a top-10 hitter. Personally, I am not trading him for anything less than an ace.
Lou Pinella (Wrigleyville)
Who the hell is this guy, and what has he done with Carlos Silva?
AJ Mass (11:26 AM)
He comes from the alternate universe and must be stopped.
Whaaaaaa? Marcum a top 10 pitcher from this point forward? How can you be confident in that? Couldn't he have 2 poor starts in a row and look a lot more like the top 40 starter he is than a top 10? Isn't that far more likely than him remaining top 10? What do you base your confidence on?
AJ Mass (11:29 AM)
Of course it's far more likely he fails. Couldn't Ubaldo give up 5 runs in each of his next two starts? Sure. The top has more of a chance not to stay there than to stay there. I base my confidence on the fact I like what I've seen when he pitches. Just because a player hasn't done it before doesn't mean he can't continue to do it.
Mike (Guilderland, NY)
AJ, will Braylon Edwards provide okay value in drafts this year as a later round pick in football drafts?
AJ Mass (11:31 AM)
I was very vocal on liking Braylon in the ESPN Rankings summit. My feeling is that he sees a one month window to earn a contract for next season and he will seize it. Then you can trade him for value when Santonio comes back.
Michael (Orange, CA)
Hudson or Hamels for the rest of the year?
AJ Mass (11:33 AM)
Hudson. I do not like Hamels, never did and never will. Gives up far too many HR the second and third time around the lineup if his curve isn't working.
Doug (Tampa, FL)
Thoughts on Matt Garza for the rest of year?
AJ Mass (11:35 AM)
I feel better about Shields and Price. Garza is a little too wild and prone to the longball for my tastes.
Who are some other Marcum-like pitchers that you like what you see but others are skeptical?
AJ Mass (11:37 AM)
I believe in Jered Weaver, Phil Hughes and Jon Sanchez probably a bit more than I've seen from others.
Thoughts on Sandoval from here on out? Any improvement coming?
AJ Mass (11:38 AM)
I think he can get the average up to .300 and if he can get around 15 HRs, that wouldn't be the worst season in the world, would it?
A.J's Biggest Fan (A.J.'s House)
I love you man!!!! Rank the following....CJ, MJD, and Ray Rice
AJ Mass (11:39 AM)
Right now I lean more to Rice than MJD, but CJ is my No. 1.
Strassy get the win tonight?
AJ Mass (11:40 AM)
As my friend, and Pirates fan, Charles said: Strasburg gets his final start against a Triple-A lineup tonight.
Braun is not producing quite at the level I expected...are my standards too high, will he turn it around?
AJ Mass (11:42 AM)
If we kept everything else the same only gave him 11 HR and 8 SB, instead of 8 HR and 11 SB, would you be happier. Probably so, and yet the other way around is probably a little more valuable in terms of fantasy. Relax.
How do you put Liriano way ahead of David Price?
AJ Mass (11:43 AM)
I think Liriano's K/BB rate is far more sustainable than Price's .216 BAA, for one.
What are your thoughts on Brandon Morrow? Own able in a 14 team league?
AJ Mass (11:46 AM)
Barely, but unless he can find the plate more consistently, there's no way he can succeed at the major league level, especially in that division.
What are your thoughts on xFIP as a tool compared to your article on FIP yesterday?
AJ Mass (11:48 AM)
I think x-FIP (which is based on expected HR/fly ball rate rather than actual HR allowed) has its place, but again, if a pitcher isn't changing stadiums, then using a stat to eliminate the ball park factor is disingenuous. However, if a pitcher is moving to anew team in the off-season, then it can be used, in conjunction with other stats to paint a clearer picture. But as an isolated stat, it really has zero value, IMO.
Jim (Vegas Baby)
Am I stupid for thinking about trading Adam Lind for Delmon Young?
AJ Mass (11:49 AM)
Not at all. I'd pull the trigger.
Mike (Los Angeles)
How much attention do you pay to FIP and xFIP when evaluating relievers? More or less than starters?
AJ Mass (11:51 AM)
Zero. Not enough of a sample size, and doesn't factor in the fact relievers rarely start an inning with a clean slate. Strand rate is a far better tool for RP. And if you believe FIP is some sort of predictor for ERA (which I don't) then it is completely useless for relievers since they can give up runs without hurting their own ERA and still "look good".
How can you say Andrus is all steals...don't BA and Runs count?
AJ Mass (11:53 AM)
Of course they count, but just halve his SB totals and he drops from borderline top 50 to borderline top 100. Without any power, you are relying on the SB total for his value.
Alex Trebec (Jeopardy)
Answer: Who has been the greatest surprise this year?
AJ Mass (11:54 AM)
Dude, that's a question.
Pirates fan Charles is incorrect, Strasburg also has Cleveland on Sunday.
AJ Mass (11:54 AM)
Would you drop Nyjer Morgan for Drew Stubbs?
AJ Mass (11:55 AM)
Don't love either guy, but lesser of two evils, I go with Stubbs.
If the draft was held today, who would your top bat be?
AJ Mass (11:57 AM)
Hard to look further than Miggy.
Alex Trebec (Jeopardy)
Answer: This player has been the greatest surprise of the year.
AJ Mass (11:58 AM)
Better. Who is Carlos Silva?
Choppa Choppa (Cake City)
I wanna trade Wieters...how long till C Santana is up?
AJ Mass (11:58 AM)
I say a couple of weeks still.
Sean Connery (Jeopardy)
The Pen is Mightier
AJ Mass (12:01 PM)
Sorry. Sorry. That's the buzzer and we are out of time. The correct answer was Haiti. Haiti. Anyways, we'll be back next Tuesday. If you wan to track me down on Twitter, feel free. Until then, be seeing you!
