Beano Cook (3:04 PM)
Good afternoon and welcome. I am happy to report that I am 1-0 on my picks, thanks to Michigan's win over Connecticut. I will give you my next prediction at the end of this chat...fire away.
Don (Sugar Land)
with Boise States's weak schedule over the last decade, how does on justify their lofty ranking with one win over an ACC opponent? Their "body of work" does not seem to warrent the position - what say you?
Beano Cook (3:06 PM)
They were number three in preseason so if Boise keeps on winning, the school will stay in the top three. That's just the way it happens. People will complain about Boise State all season long. All I can say is, let the season play out and see what happens. Oregon State is not going to be an easy opponent.
Were you surprised that Washington and Jake Locker lost at BYU?
Beano Cook (3:08 PM)
It was a road game and playing there at Provo is not easy. For Locker to win the Heisman, and he is a contender, he has to win games. Washington should beat Syracuse and then comes a pivotal game against Nebraska.
Giancarlo Toffoli (st. Jean, canada)
Mr. Cook, now that the Irish have won their first game, is it safe to say that hope springs eternal and there is a glimmer of hope on the horizon?Thank you
Beano Cook (3:10 PM)
I have been saying for years that Notre Dame has material and they will start winning big again. As I said before the season began, if Notre Dame wins its first six games, based on the schedule down the stretch, the Irish will be play for the national title. If they win this weekend, watch out.
Isw USC's defense in trouble after giving up a lot of points at Hawaii?
Beano Cook (3:10 PM)
See me Saturday night.
Hi Beano. Did you know that the Pirates set the professional record for futility a couple of weeks ago when they guaranteed to have their 17th straight losing season (and still made a 5 million profit!)
Beano Cook (3:11 PM)
What am I supossed to do? I am not getting any of it.
cayce (Pensacola, FL)
Why does everyone keep talking about how USC sent back their Bush Heisman trophy as if they had a choice? It was part of the NCAA ruling that they had to separate themselves from anything Bush related. This includes the trophy doesn?t it?
Beano Cook (3:12 PM)
That is your opinion.
Beano Cook (3:12 PM)
The only person who has a bigger mess than Pat Haden is BP.
Beano Cook Sr. (Ocean City, MD)
What your thought on Kirk Ferentz new contract and salary till 2020?
Beano Cook (3:13 PM)
That is great. Iowa is smart to keep him. It is not an easy place to win and somehow he manages to do that often. He is one of the best coaches in college football.
What do you think of the UGA - So Carolina game? This is going to be good.
Beano Cook (3:16 PM)
This is one of the most interesting games of the day. South Carolina is home and has Steve Spurrier. Georgia has more talent. This series usually has close games and this should fall into the category. I don't have an opinion on which team will win.
Does Mark Ingram get back in time for the Alabama-Arkansas game? Does it change the outcome?
Beano Cook (3:18 PM)
I am not a doctor nor do I play one on TV. For Alabama, it would help, but Arkansas is going to be tough with Ryan Mallett whether Ingram plays or not. Richardson is a capable back if Ingram is stlll out. Right now Alabama is only concerned with Penn State on Saturday night.
Rod (SEC Country)
What did you think about Ole Miss losing to Jacksonville State? It was 31-10 at half, so did Mississippi let up?
Beano Cook (3:20 PM)
To me, that is an amazing upset. Is is not easy to win in Oxford. I would say they are not happy at Ole Miss these days, though fans in Starkville have a different opinion. By the way, isn't it amazing that LSU almost lost to a shorthanded North Carolina team?
Luis (El Paso, TX)
I haven't seen you answer one Texas A&M question.....what are your thoughts on them? Can they be a darkhorse in the Big 12?
Beano Cook (3:22 PM)
Yes, the Aggies can be, but I don't see them beating out the likes of Texas or Oklahoma. The Sooners did struggle with Utah State and the Longhorns did not exactly blow out Rice.
Do the Vols have any chance of stopping Oregon? The only thing they have going for them is they play in Neyland.
Beano Cook (3:23 PM)
Ivan Maisel of espn.com thinks Oregon will win easily. I don't. I think it will be closer than the experts think. He was right on his pick last week, Arizona over Toledo big.
Chris (San Diego)
With all the love fest for Boise State, what about the other non-AQ team that sits only 1 spot below at #4 in the polls. With games still to come against 2 more likely ranked teams (Utah and BYU) what are the chances they get into the National Championship Game discussion?
Beano Cook (3:24 PM)
TCU is ranked fourth, so the Horned Frogs are in great shape. Boise State and TCU fans, just keep winning and quit complaining and things will work out.
Sean (Jupiter, FL)
Should I be worried about my Gators?
Beano Cook (3:26 PM)
It is one game with a new QB. You won the game, didn't you. Miami got killed in its opener in 1983 and ended up winning the national title.
Beano still think Pryor and OSU are overrated?
Beano Cook (3:27 PM)
I was wrong on Pryor. I don't think he is overrated now. He is an outstandign college quarterback and I don't think Ohio State is overrated now. I don't think Pryor is a pro quarterback necessarily.
Roberto (Beaumont, ca)
why does everyone hate USC so much?
Beano Cook (3:28 PM)
Jealousy. The Song Girls.
Better game...Alabama's goal-line stand against Penn State in the '79 Sugar Bowl or Ohio State beating Miami in 2OT in the '03 Fiesta Bowl?
Beano Cook (3:29 PM)
Alabama's goal-line stand.
What do you think about the Heisman committee's supposed decision to take away Bush's Heisman. I think what Reggie did was wrong, but unless you are going to take back OJ Simpson's, this smacks as selective prosecution.
Beano Cook (3:30 PM)
I happen to think it is wrong. That is just my opinion.
pookybear (Des Moines)
Beano, based on your comments about LSU and Ole Miss, are you ready to admit that the SEC isn't all that powerful this year?
Beano Cook (3:31 PM)
No. It is a little early but maybe this will be a down year for the league...we will have to see. I am shocked that Mississippi lost after leading by three TDs at halftime and LSU should have put away UNC earlier given the number of players the Tar Heels were missing.
Chris Fiegler (Latham,NY)
Who do you think is Best College Football Quarterback so far this year?
Beano Cook (3:31 PM)
It is a little early. Week one, Denard Robinson could make a case but really, it is too early.
anthony (okemah, ok)
do you think the trojans can go undefeated?
Beano Cook (3:32 PM)
I think they ca but I don't think they will.
I've asked this question before in other chats, and nobody has yet to answer. So beano what would be a bigger story at the end of the season, another NC for BAMA or Boise St being the first non-AQ team to make the NC game and winning it?
Beano Cook (3:34 PM)
Boise State would be the bigger story. We will have to see if it happens. By the way, they play Fresno State and Utah State and both of them had good showings last saturday. Fresno had a nice win over Cincinnati.
One name I haven't heard mentioned to replace Les Miles is Sarah Palin, she is hugely popular in Louisiana!
Beano Cook (3:35 PM)
I have no comment. I am not going to get Bill O'Reilly mad at me. Miles is on the hot seat.
Hey Beano, where does the hail mary at the end of the ECU-Tulsa game rank all time in the history of fantastic finishes?
Beano Cook (3:37 PM)
I saw the replay and it was unbelievable, especially those who had East Carolina plus two. I think about Flutie, Kordell Stewart...this was a good one.
Beano, brutal week for the Big East. Is there any doubt who the worst BCS conference in America is? Just a horrible, brutal conference.
Beano Cook (3:38 PM)
I have said that for years. It is the weakest conference. Connecticut was a disappointment and Cincinnati led early and lost. There will always be a conference that is weak.
Mike (NE Ohio)
If OSU runs the table and wins a title, do you think The Vest rides off into the sunset on a high note? If so, who replaces him?
Beano Cook (3:39 PM)
No, I don't think he will retire...why would he? I do know he likes going down to Florida, but I don't know about retiring.
Cosmo (Anytown, USA)
Do you, or did you ever, gamble on college football games? If so, any bad beat stories to share?
Beano Cook (3:40 PM)
I make small friendly bets with friends. I also do something on the Super Bowl with friends and usually lose.
Why the love affair with randy edsall by the media? He hasn't won anything (yet) of significance at UCONN.
Beano Cook (3:41 PM)
Did win a bowl game last yera and handled adversity with the Jasper Howard tragedy.
kelly (HOG NATION)
after seeing that arkansas defense has stepped up do you think they have a shot at beating bama
Beano Cook (3:42 PM)
Every year I try to find one upset early and I think Arkansas over Alabama is a possibility. I thought Mississippi would beat Alabama last year and I was wrong and I could be wrong again this year.
Do my Bulls have any realistic shot at UF this weekend
Beano Cook (3:44 PM)
Tom (Destin, FL)
What are your thoughts on Georgia Tech this year? Can they be as good as last year or did they lose too much talent to the draft?
Beano Cook (3:46 PM)
They lost talent but they have the potential to eb very good in the ACC.
Jay (Pine Moss, FL)
FSU vs Oklahoma. Does FSU have the edge? They certainly did well traveling to BYU last year.
Beano Cook (3:48 PM)
Oklahoma has won 31 straight at home, so is there an edge. Watch it on ABC. We will see what Christian Ponder can do...this is not like playing against Samford...no kidding.
Joe (West palm bay, FL)
How many games do you think the Wolverines can win this year, will they be bowl eligible?
Beano Cook (3:49 PM)
I think they will be bowl eligible...if not, I will be shocked. I will say this, if Michigan is not bowl eligible, there will be a new coach in Ann Arbor next season.
Don Richards (Atlanta, Ga)
Beano, how can we get baseball off TV when college football starts?
Beano Cook (3:50 PM)
College football started. Baseball on TV is a form of torture..the games are simply too boring.
Beano Cook (3:50 PM)
This is the most interest I have seen going into the college football season in years.
Gregory (Delmont, Kansas)
Wow, we are really disappointed in Kansas' loss this past weekend.
Beano Cook (3:52 PM)
North Dakota State, yeah I would say so. Turner Gill's debut was not what was expected. You cannot lose those games. Well Jayhawk fans, basketball season is right around the corner.
Kim ((Happy Valley))
Penn State loses by 3 pts or less to Bama on Saturday. Do they drop in the polls?
Beano Cook (3:53 PM)
If Penn State loses by only three, that would be impressive.
Beano Cook (3:53 PM)
Just play the game.
Beano Cook (3:55 PM)
Ok time for the pick. We started with a win last week. UCLA is getting around a TD against Stanford. I think this will be close...Stanford 28, UCLA 27...see you next week. Enjoy monster Saturday.
