Andrea Adelson (12:01 PM)
Hello and welcome!
Mike (Reno, NV)
Nevada has proved itself the past two weeks at home vs. Cal and on the road at BYU. So why isn't Colin Kaepernick in the Heisman talk?
Andrea Adelson (12:02 PM)
Hi Mike,I think there are a few reasons. First, he plays for a non-AQ school, and it takes much more to distinguish yourself when you are not in a power conference. Second, a lot of people probably think he is a "system quarterback" and perhaps discredit his stats. Third, his team has not had the name recognition as Boise State, where folks know all about Kellen Moore. So that hurts as well. He really is having an outstanding year, and hopefully more people learn about him.
What can we as fans do to help destroy this hidious BCS system and get a playoff system. Counting the Mt West and the WAC we have 8 major conferances, why not an 8 team playoff?
Andrea Adelson (12:03 PM)
Andrew, there are 3 other conferences, too, let's not forget about them. Unfortunately, there is nothing fans can do to get rid of the system. You are going to have to live with it.
Sam (Las Vegas)
Andrea, love your work. What factors do you think will decide the top 10 matchup this weekend between my Ducks and Stanford? I am expecting a very high scoring affair. Thanks!
Andrea Adelson (12:05 PM)
Sam, I am really interested to see how Stanford responds to the high-powered attack. If you look at who the Cardinal have played, you would not call any of those teams offensive juggernauts -- not even UCLA given the past two weeks. Oregon had a big test last week and survived. The Cardinal have yet to be tested against a good team. No, I am not counting Notre Dame as a good team.
Ryan Ullman (Miami)
Hey Andrea,So I noticed your projection is Boise State playing Ohio State in the National Championship. I'm curious who do you think it will be that takes Alabama out of the equation?
Andrea Adelson (12:06 PM)
Ryan, That is a good question. I think Alabama has a chance to lose 2 games this season. I did not say they would, just a chance. I was very impressed with the way the Tide came back against Arkansas. They showed the mark of a champion, no question about it. But some weaknesses were exposed, and they are not invincible. There are some tough games ahead. I went out on a limb with the projection. I have no idea if it is going to happen, I am just guessing here.
Chris Fiegler (Latham,NY)
What are the Penalties in College Football If a player gets ejected for on Field altercations after the President of the NCAA sees that? Will there be fines, suspensions or what?
Andrea Adelson (12:08 PM)
I believe it is up to each school to determine penalties. Last year in the LeGarrette Blount situation for example, the NCAA did not step in. Oregon handled the punishment.
Utah has been the best non BCS school over the past decade, their undefeated again and I hear no mention of them at all. if they run the table and beat TCU, they will be a BCS lock right?
Andrea Adelson (12:10 PM)
You hear no mention? Have you checked the rankings? But yes if Utah runs the table the Utes should be in a BCS bowl game -- of course that all depends on Boise State. If the Broncos are in, there are no guarantees that 2 non-AQs would make it in again. The schedule is very back loaded. You could probably say the easiest part of it is now over and the tough part begins following the bye.
I think that all the criticism and frustration with the BCS is misdirected. The real problem with college football is the preseason polls. They skew so badly where teams end up and how teams are perceived. Polls should not come out for at least first 3 weeks. What say you?
Andrea Adelson (12:11 PM)
I agree that polls should come out in October, but I do not think that would clear up the critcism and frustration with the BCS. Because if there are 3-plus undefeated teams in the country, somebody is going to get left out. Preseason polls have nothing to do with that.
Jared (Sandy Creek, NY )
Hey Andrea i want to know what you thought of Syracuse's performance over the last 4 weeks ????
Andrea Adelson (12:13 PM)
The Orange have more wins than I thought they would this season, so that is a plus. But maybe best not to get hopes too high considering the opponents. Nassib is playing better than I expected, and Carter is having a good start to the season, too.
The Gators remember all too well the defeat they suffered in the SEC championship game. This is why the Gators will win big this weekend. However in the real world where revenge rivalry will not trump skill and coaching, what must the gators do to win?
Andrea Adelson (12:15 PM)
Line Trey Burton up on offense and defense? Just kidding. But boy was he a revelation last week. I think Florida has to take advantage of that weak Alabama secondary. Brantley has not really been unleashed in the way Gator fans were hoping to see, and part of that could be the inconsistent WRs. I am not sure Florida can do what Arkansas did in the passing game for that reason. I think the Florida defense is more than capable of forcing McElroy into making mistakes. That is an opportunistic bunch. So those would be my two keys.
Over/Under BYU finishes 7-6
Andrea Adelson (12:16 PM)
Kevin, Great question. I did not have BYU in my preseason power rankings and got lots of hate mail from Cougars fans, but I feared what has happened. The QB situation was a mess, the defense looks shaky and the start to the schedule was one of the toughest in the country. I am projecting 6-6 right now unless something dramatic changes.
Dr. Lou (Bristol)
Are you as tired as I am of hearing the "if Boise State or TCU were in the SEC, they would never make it through unbeaten"? Do these fools realize that if Alabama were in the WAC they would not have the SEC money nor the SEC talent and stadium? That is the lame argument that the BS, uh I mean BCS conference folks love to use - not realizing that if Boise State or TCU were in the SEC, they'd have the money, talent, and stadiums to compete with the Alabamas of the world. Ron White is correct. You can't fix stupid.
Andrea Adelson (12:18 PM)
Well, I am not going to go calling names. But I will say that is the most consistent argument I hear against Boise State and TCU. I have to explain the financial disparity and nobody wants to believe any of that, and I understand. Fans will passionately support and root for their team. But you are absolutely right. When you look at the money Boise State has and the recruiting budget the Broncos have compared to Alabama, it is not even close. Yet they consistently win.
I think of the Heisman as more like a glorified popularity contest anymore. Ryan Mallot all but forgotten after Saturday. Unbelievable! Forgotten is his performance throughout the game and not remembered that it takes a team to win a game not just one player. If the Hogs defensive unit would have played the second half of the game, like they did in the first half, there would not have been a question as to Ryan Mallot still being the front runner for the Heisman trophy. As far as McClroy is concered watch his performance of interceptions. It was great wasn't it. The Heisman goes to the best player on the best team that is not right. In my opinion!
Andrea Adelson (12:19 PM)
Sorry, Jerad, but unfortunately it is a popularity contest among the players on the very best teams in the country. I will say I took Mallett off my list for one very simple reason -- his two interceptions cost the game. You can say what you will about the Arkansas defense, but he did not show what it takes to be a "winning QB" on those two drives. McElroy is not on anyone's Heisman list, not that I know of. He wins, yes, but his backfield mates are far more impressive. You can't deny that.
After Nebraska's tough win against South Dakota State where SDSU had 2 TD's taken off the board due to penalties, will any FBS team schedule a team form my state or the one from the North again?
Andrea Adelson (12:20 PM)
Tim, Great question. Those Dakotas have certainy wreaked havoc this season, haven't they! But folks keep scheduling Appalachian State so ...
Keith Jones (Michigan)
I know Denard Robinson's nickname is shoelace, but I propose a new nickname...... The doctor, he puts defenses into a coma, tears them apart with surgical precision and, his initials are D.R. .... Doctor Robinson
Andrea Adelson (12:22 PM)
Hey, maybe that will stick. And plus, he has to see the doctor this week after getting hurt.
Joel (Buffalo) [via mobile]
Hi Miss Adelson, Did anyone see the "Final Verdict" segment on Saturday's College Football Final ? It was drop-dead hilarious, cleverly well-done and sufficuently over-acted by those three hams, Davis, Holtz and May. If the program is shown again, you'll want to see it.
Andrea Adelson (12:22 PM)
We thank you for the compliment! Those three guys do a great job.
Kyle (Reno, NV)
Both teams have a long ways to go, but how huge would an undefeated BSU @ undefeated Nevada be on the Friday after Thanksgiving?
Andrea Adelson (12:23 PM)
Huger than huge. Ginormous would be my word. It certainly seems like it is setting up that way, doesn't it?
Casey (Fort Worth)
Does the clunker of a season by the Big East help the new MWC get an auto-bid? Seems like the computer ranking average may not hold them back. How do you like their chances?
Andrea Adelson (12:24 PM)
Casey, I would say the chances are 50-50 at this point. The Big East is not going to weigh into the decision, it is all about the 3 criteria laid out. And it also takes info from a four-year cycle. Nevada is going to help out if it is able to finish in the Top 25. San Diego State is also going to help, but it needs some improvement from the bottom of the conference as well.
Chris (Fullerton, CA)
Any love for Bobby Hauck on his first win (a convincing one against a horrible UNM squad) before he is brought back to reality with games against Nevada and West Virginia in the next two weeks?
Andrea Adelson (12:25 PM)
Sure, but, I mean, he should have won that game, right?!
So Iowa loses to a ranked *Arizona team, on the road on the west coast.. and a night game to boot... while Texas gets smoked at home by a poor UCLA team.. and Texas is still ranked higher. How does that work?
Andrea Adelson (12:26 PM)
Hey, I am with the writers. On my power rankings Iowa is also head, same as the AP poll. I can't speak for the coaches.
TCU seemed to have some issues with a power running game this past week...and Utah has that in abundance. What are the chances the Utes take down the Frogs later this year?
Andrea Adelson (12:28 PM)
Yes that was very uncharacteristic for the Horned Frogs. I think Utah has a good chance. The game is at home, so that is good for the Utes. I think the way everybody is playing this season, nobody is a sure bet to go undefeated.
My biggest beef with the current BCS system are the AQ bids. If they did away with these completely and just took the highest ranked teams in the current system, I dont think people would have as much of a problem with it. Your thoughts? Also, how did Oregon jump my Horned Frogs this week in the polls?
Andrea Adelson (12:29 PM)
Of course they would, because if you have multiple undefeated or multiple one-loss teams there would be an outcry over who gets into the championship game. ... Oregon looked more impressive and that is how it jumped the Frogs. Not in my power rankings, though. I still have TCU at No. 4. But your coach did say he would have voted Oregon ahead of him, too.
JD (Hot Springs, Ar)
Can Arkansas rebound and beat Auburn, LSU, USC and get into a BCS bowl if the east contender is not worthy if 2-3 loses after championship game
Andrea Adelson (12:31 PM)
Wow, JD that is a lot to chew right there. I think it is going to be really tough for Arkansas to run the table. The games against Auburn and South Carolina are on the road, and so is Mississippi State, which is better and plays very well at home. Texas A&M is not going to be easy, either. Arkansas has to find a running game to help Mallett out, and the defense has to improve, too.
Is there a bigger fraud in college football than the Big 12? Texas gets spanked at home by a poor UCLA team.. while Nebraska squeaks by an 0-2 FCS team at home. Nebraska has the easiest schedule in America.. if they make the NC because of this, I may vomit.
Andrea Adelson (12:32 PM)
Hey, I thought that title belonged to Boise State! Badum-bum. I think your argument is going to fall on deaf ears here. Have you looked at the Big East?
Scott (West Virginia)
Chances of the Big East losing it's AQ status after this weekend.
Andrea Adelson (12:33 PM)
It is only one season!! AQ status is judged over a four-year cycle, and I would find it hard to imagine the BCS taking it away from somebody who already has it.
Corey Draheim (Flushing,MI)
What do you think about michigan making a run and beating ohio state possible if they keep the way there playing and defense gets better ?
Andrea Adelson (12:35 PM)
It all depends on the defense. I am a huge D-Rob fan, but I am trying to temper expectations because we have yet to see Michigan play a Big Ten game. The game this weekend at Indiana is going to be a huge test. Can the Wolverines slow down Ben Chappell, who is having a terrific start to the season? That one could be a shootout. But right now I have Michigan behind Ohio State, Iowa and Wisconsin, and right there with Penn St. and Michigan St.
Andrea, why does a team like Oklahoma who hasn't exactly been dominant or Nebraska after struggling with an FCS opponent get harassed and denigrated like TCU or BSU?
Andrea Adelson (12:36 PM)
Nate, I think you know the answer to that. Nobody likes to see an outsider crash the party.
Zac (Pine Bluff, AR)
After hearing a lot about Alabama following this past Saturday's game, the thing on most fans in the state of Arkansas is where does Arkansas go from here?
Andrea Adelson (12:38 PM)
Zac, I don't think there is any reason to lose faith. Certainly that was a tough loss, but your team was very close to beating the No. 1 team in the country. As I said to JD, the remaining schedule is really hard, and it is going to be difficult to win out the rest of the season. But it's not impossible when you have Ryan Mallett at quarterback. I am waiting on this improved defense, and while we saw flashes last week, it could not hold when needed. Also, there is no killer instinct here.
Dave (St. Louis)
It's Air Force/Navy week -- any thoughts?
Andrea Adelson (12:40 PM)
Going to be a great game, and I hope everybody is looking forward to it as much as I am. Been very impressed with all the service academies so far this year. I think this could be the year Air Force beats Navy. Hasn't happened in the last seven games, but I think Jefferson, Tew and Clark are playing well, and so is the defense. Ricky Dobbs has been hobbled and has not looked as dominant as he did a season ago.
Is there any way Denard Robinson can last the entire Big Ten season? I understand he has been carving up his non-conference schedule, but if he carries this much of the offense, Ohio State, Iowa, Wisconsin, MSU might kill him.
Andrea Adelson (12:41 PM)
Brodie, It is a great question. We have already seen him get dinged up in two of the non-conference games. Forcier looked good last week, but it was Bowling Green. That is why I said earlier a lot of this is going to rest on the defense.
Casey (Fort Worth)
Does Kyle from Reno forget that it would not be as huge as TCU@ Utah, possibly a matchup of two teams in the top 7-8.
Andrea Adelson (12:43 PM)
Casey, That would be ginormous, too. I don't think he was comparing those two games, I think he was just saying the game would have huge implications if Nevada continues to do well.
You mentioned the other day that Gene Bleymaier was "trying to get good games scheduled". Could you please list the teams which he has contacted and why they turned him down?
Andrea Adelson (12:46 PM)
Rett, I know you and many others blame Boise State for its schedule. He has never given me a list of teams he is trying to schedule, so I just take him at his word. But I am not sure you have an argument when they played Virginia Tech on the road this year, at Ole Miss next year and just finished up a home and home with Oregon and played Oregon State this year. I guess that means nothing.
Jim Crozier (Boise, Idaho)
Why the double standard with regards to BSU's victory over Oregon State vs. TCU's? After TCU's win, it was a gritty, hard fought victory against a ranked team showing TCU's legitimacy. But everyone is rushing to downgrade BSU's two TD victory over the same school. With TCU, it was a back and forth affair that was in doubt until deep in the 4th. With BSU, they were never really threatened.
Andrea Adelson (12:49 PM)
I just think there are a lot of people out there who are tired of hearing about Boise State and are going to scrutinize everything. Boise State, and not TCU, has become the poster child for non-AQs trying to bust into the system. Based on comments I have heard from fans, they believe Boise State is whining about it position, when that is not even the case. Their coaches and players have not talked at all about that. But there is a perception out there that Boise State is not satisfied with where it is and should be put in its place. The same perception does not exist for TCU simply because it has not gotten as much attention this season.
Why can't Pat Hill ever seem to get Fresno State over the hump? Instead, it does well, and gets all Fresno State-y when it has a chance to kick it to the next gear...
Andrea Adelson (12:51 PM)
Ryan, that is a great question, and one I know that frustrates many Fresno State fans. I know people think Fresno State should have won that game because Ole Miss is so bad, but first it was a tough trip going from West to East, and second, you know Ole Miss was going to come out with something to prove. I will say I never envisioned Fresno giving up 55 points and reverting back to form. Injuries have hurt on offense, too. Now the top 2 backs are hurt. But I am going to withold judgement on Hill until the season ends.
Andrea, is Dwight Dasher back now from suspension?
Andrea Adelson (12:52 PM)
Yes he will be available for the game against Troy next Tuesday.
Miami at Clemson. Last 3 games have gone to OT. Who do you think wins?
Andrea Adelson (12:53 PM)
Robert, Man that is going to be a tough game. Considering I have Miami as the ACC winner, I am going with the Canes in this one. The defense looked great last week, so I expect to see more of the same ... BUT if Jacory Harris keeps throwing it to the opposition, it could be a long day.
Chris (Fullerton, CA)
Don't you think the best way to bring about a playoff is to have 4 or more undefeated AQ teams in the same season so that several do not make the championship game?
Andrea Adelson (12:53 PM)
It happened in 2004 with 3 and nothing happened.
The Bear (Boise)
How do you think OSU will do against its first real test against a non cupcake team in Wisconsin comin up. Just like Oregon they will have to prove they can handle a real team.
Andrea Adelson (12:55 PM)
Are you calling Miami a cupcake? Tough crowd. Wisconsin is going to be a really difficult game, but the Badgers usually fall short against the top tier teams, right? I am going with Ohio State.
Quick question.. How can USC be ranked, when they can't go to any bowl games? Aren't they taking a up a poll spot where some other school could be ranked?
Andrea Adelson (12:55 PM)
Brian, they are only ranked in the AP poll. The AP says as long as USC plays games, it will be eligible for inclusion.
Andrea, Since Budget disparity is such a problem for TCU and BSU. Wouldn't college football be better off if they split the FBS by budgets? BSU/TCU could play against the other non-AQ teams for a "national championship" while the AQ teams could play for the FBS National Championship". Wouldn't that be Wonderful?
Andrea Adelson (12:56 PM)
Won't be surprised if that happens. There's been plenty of talk about the elite programs breaking away and forming their own division.
Did it seem like the refs were out to get Boise State? There was as much taunting from the Beavers as there was from Boise, it's football, words are always exchanged. I'm not saying it's okay, but those penalties kept Oregon State in the game.
Andrea Adelson (12:57 PM)
Um, no. Boise State deserved those penalties.
Andrea, do you think Iowa could end up being the most overrated team of the pre-season? Losing to Arizona, then maybe to Penn State, Northwestern (again...), and Ohio State, maybe Michigan, and maybe Wisconsin?
Andrea Adelson (12:57 PM)
Umm, I think Texas has that right now.
How much did kellen Moore's stock go up in his heisman hunt after tearing apart the Beaver secondary? So far this year i haven't seen anyone as accurate or with as much pocket awareness and pressence. Whats your take? Am i just bias? He seems to be at a mindset far above the rest!
Andrea Adelson (12:58 PM)
I don't know that his stock went up. He was already in the conversation. But I will say he is able to make throws many other quarterbacks can only dream about making. He looks better than he did last season in terms of that. But again, he plays for a non-AQ team so his chances of winning it are remote.
David (Athens, GA)
Andrea, my world's been turned upside down following the last three weeks... but I think I had an epiphany, Georgia has to be the best 3 loss team in the nation, right??
Andrea Adelson (12:59 PM)
Umm, if that makes you feel better, go for it.
I will believe that Utah is legit this year after they beat someone of worth. Pitt has proven to be pretty bad, and wins over SJSU, UNLV, and NM mean absolutely nothing. That being said, I still dont think they lose till Oct 30th against Air Force in Colorado.
Andrea Adelson (1:00 PM)
Brett, fair point. As I said before, the schedule is totally back loaded starting with that Air Force game.
Andrea, do you think Boise would even stand a chance against Bama or Ohio State? I hope they go to the title game just so I can see them get destroyed...
Andrea Adelson (1:01 PM)
Of course I think that. Do you have some type of Magic 8 ball that lets you know the outcome of games before they are played? Alabama doesn't beat people because it is Alabama, and the same for Ohio State. Last time I checked, the Buckeyes had a pretty bad showing in their last 2 national championship games.
Andrea Adelson (1:01 PM)
