Terry Blount (2:00 PM)
Hello folks. Here's a tip for you: A Segway does not double as a hang glider. Now, what's on your mind?
Matthew (Columbia, NJ)
Hey Terry do you think Allmendinger will win a race before the year is over? The 43 car looked real good on sunday
Terry Blount (2:01 PM)
AJ is improving every week and the team is starting to gel. i would not be surprised to see Dinger win one down the stretch.
Nick Rolando (Orlando)
Terry, read the article about RPM. The only thing I disagree with you is that RPM isn't "quality" equipment. I mean if not for some bad luck he would be higher in points and it isn't like the RPM cars are slouches as we saw with Dinger, Kahne and Menard this season at times. My problem is the adaptaion of going to a new race team and adjusting, he finally seems to be finding his groove at RPM.
Terry Blount (2:02 PM)
RPM is vastly improved, no doubt. But it isn't on par with RCR, so we should see Paul make a jump forward in 2011.
With the fact that Bayne and Scott are out of rides this week and Allgaier is probably out at the end of the year...do you think NASCAR needs to do something about these cup guys like Kyle ruining the NW series and taking all the sponsors? The fact that these young guys are out of rides while Kyle and Carl continue to ruin the series is an injustice!
Terry Blount (2:03 PM)
I agree Tracy. NASCAR needs to set limits on Cup driver participation. It is huurting driver development and that damages NASCAR in the long run.
Jake (Irving, TXq)
Hey Terry, Wasn't it Boyer who started the whole mess with Denny by questioning the integrity of the post Loudon height sticks on the #11 and #48?
Terry Blount (2:04 PM)
Yes, in a way. But Clint was really just rtrying to make a point that some cars didn't meet the height requirement at the track and the 33 did.
John (Troy, MO)
As a gay man who loves NASCAR, do you see any possibility that there will be broader acceptance of openly gay athletes within the sport, or do you think that time just hasn't come yet? Thanks!
Terry Blount (2:06 PM)
It shouldn't be an issue in any sport, but the sad truth is many sports don't have a real acceptance of it.
Ricky (Yuba City)
Guess Who???!!! Biffle. Well, the Biff is sitting in the 9 slot in standings - do you think he has an opportunity to go to the slate with power and make a move up the standings with the remaining races during this season? Smile.
Terry Blount (2:07 PM)
Biff might win a race. He's always good a Kansas, but his chances of winning the Chase are over.
Terry, so based off your odds & ends piece, do you think France will implement an elimination system?
Terry Blount (2:09 PM)
I think NASCAR is on the fence about it. If JJ easily wins a fifth straight title, I guarantee it will happen. If this Chase ends up being a really close battle at Homestead between three or four guys, it probably won't happen.
During the race last Sunday, I'll bet Jimmie Johnson was humming that old Jim Croce song...You don't tug on superman's cape....and you don't mess around with Jim. Oh darn, now I have to go get my album and play that song.
Terry Blount (2:11 PM)
You left out "You don't spit into the wind. You don't pull the mask off the old Lone Ranger ...
Do you think that maybe Dave is going to conservative with his setups for Rowdy going for consistency instead of wins?
Terry Blount (2:13 PM)
No. Dave knows Kyle is excellent are controlling a loose race car. But Dave also doesn't want to do anything stupid at this point that would knock them out of contention. They are right where they need to be to make a run at the title.
kimberly (new york, ny)
who do you think has a shot at winning a race who is a non-chaser?
Terry Blount (2:14 PM)
Good question. The answer: Jamie McMurray, Dinger, Newman, Mark Martin.
Terry, any idea where Sadler will be driving in 2011?
Terry Blount (2:16 PM)
No, but it's unlikely Elliott will end up with a quality ride unless he has a sponsor that will come with him.
Chris N. (Crestview, FL)
Why is it that whenever Kyle Busch is talked about, we have to here all about his 81 wins but whenever anyone else is talked about only their Sprint Cup wins are counted as a total. Kyle has 19 wins. Who cares if the guy can win in the minor leagues? Like when Bowyer won it was "3rd win for Clint Bowyer" and not "12th win for Clint Bowyer". Do we count A-Rods HRs from the minors? Nolan Ryans strikeouts from the minors? No. This talk about Kyle beating Pettys 200 win total is a media created sham IMO.
Terry Blount (2:18 PM)
You are preaching to the choir Chris. I don't care that Kyle is the Master of the Minors. But I do think he has the talent to win the Cup title.
Rosa (San Antonio)
Hi Terry, There were 10 full time Cup drivers in the NWS Dover race so why do the fans only bash Rowdy and Carl for racing in NWS?
Terry Blount (2:20 PM)
The problem is that Cup drivers have better equipmenet and crews and are bullying a league where they don't belong. In Carl's case, he'sunning the entire schedule, as is Brad K, who will win the title. Cup drivers always have raced in NW, but only the last few years have they raced the whole season to try to win the championship.
I have been noticing in the past couple of races EGR drivers qualify real well but they fall off during the race. What do you think might be the reason?
Terry Blount (2:22 PM)
There's a big difference between qualifying fast and racing fast. It's two entirely different setups. It's easy to run fast for two laps, much more difficult to make adjustement on the fly and have a car do that for an entire race.
In your opinion Terry, if NASCAR dropped the Chase (we know they won't, but let's pretend) how would that change the racing, not only in the last 10 races, but all year? I just can't help thinking we'd have more competitive races because the top drivers wouldnt be in test mode for 2 months.
Terry Blount (2:25 PM)
For the most part, I think the races this year have been pretty competitive. If there wasn't a Chase, the same guys would be winning races, but we wouldn't care much about the guys who ranked below the top five spots. All the Chase does is give more guys a shot at winning the title. It doesn't change who runs up front.
Tonya (Longview, TX)
Do you think that HMS and especially #48 have more engineers, more quality people, pay higher salaries and simply outspend Gibbs, Roush and Penske?
Terry Blount (2:27 PM)
In some areas, yes. Money talks. The best people go where they can make the most money. But they other teams you mentioned all have top people who can get the job done.
That 43 car was fast and has been fast lately do you think RPM has put their focus only on that team since hes the only one staying next year?
Terry Blount (2:27 PM)
Wouldn't you do that? Sure they have.
Ryan (The Beach, Ventura CA)
Will we get a sneak peak of the new cot nose before 2011
Terry Blount (2:29 PM)
They're going to havwe to test it in January, but don't look for any dramatic changes yet like we've seen in thje new NW cars. It's coming, but not in 2011.
Frank (New Orleans)
Was it NASCAR President, Mr. Helton that decided on the penalities for the #33?
Terry Blount (2:30 PM)
It's a competition board of several people and he's included.
Frank (New Orleans)
Can NASCAR reverse the #33 penalities without losing credibility?
Terry Blount (2:32 PM)
They could, but they won't. Te appeal board is independent, but don't look for this penalty to get overturned.
After recovering from a strong 4th at the Monster Mile, where he isn't even really that great, where is Kurt Busch looking ahead towards the championship?
Terry Blount (2:33 PM)
Kurt definitely is in the hunt. He was my darkhorse pick when the Chase started.
Peter (Denton, TX)
With all those empty seats at Dover do you think that might be the next Atlanta and lose a race?
Terry Blount (2:35 PM)
I wouldn't be surprised if that happened in 2012. The question is, where do you put that race? The truth is Cup has too many events. It's a simple case of supply and demand. The supply is more than the demand. A 32-race sked would be better, but that's not going to happen anytime soon.
Since when does Rowdy Burns race in NASCAR and why do all of these people talk about him?
Terry Blount (2:36 PM)
Rowdy is Kyle Busch's nickname. But Rowdy Burns in that Exxon car would be fun to watch.
Terry, your early pick to win this weekend?
Terry Blount (2:38 PM)
I think Carl might get that first win Sunday. And I think Reuti might be good here. But JJ will be up front, as will Denny.
I'm not knocking or hating on anyone, as I think diversity in this sport is great, but at the end of the year when we look at the overall results of the Danica Patrick Experiment, will we look at it as a failure?
Terry Blount (2:39 PM)
It's a failure in my book at this point. You can't do it the way she's trying to do it on a part-time basis.
Janie (Monroe, LA)
Were you supprised to hear The Biff throw in the towel and say his chase is done and do you think Rowdy and Denny have the best shot at challenging #48?
Terry Blount (2:40 PM)
Biff was just mad, but his chance of winning the title probably are done. And yes, I do think the JGR boys are the ones who could end JJ's streak.
will scott speed keep his ride for next year and if not where will he be racing?
Terry Blount (2:41 PM)
I would be surprised if Scott keeps his job. I don't know if he'll be in Cup next year.
john (auckland new zealand)
with scott dixon driving aussie v8 supercars this weekend, any chance he moves to nascar?
Terry Blount (2:41 PM)
Thomas (Milledgeville, GA)
Any word on who will take over the RPM 19 car?
Terry Blount (2:43 PM)
The bigger question is whether they will have a 19 car next year.
Connie (Lufkin, TX)
Assuming that #88 goes winless again what can Dale jr or Hendrick say to make believers out of us for 2011?
Terry Blount (2:45 PM)
Nothing unles Rick makes big changes to the team, which I don't see him doing. Junior needs to post some more top 5s down the stretch to keep hope alive.
Aren't other people supposed to give their friends nicknames? We just read that Kyle was the one that started calling himself Rowdy. How is that a nickname?
Terry Blount (2:46 PM)
Jake, you seem to have Kyle issues. He can call himself whatever he wants. And in this case, it fits.
what up with letting trevor bayne go? he was doing a good enough job. do you see him getting another gig because i think he's earned it?
Terry Blount (2:47 PM)
Bayne definitely will get another ride. MWR is making room for Ryan Truex.
I assume by reading one of your other answers you dont think Jr will win a race this year. True or False?
Terry Blount (2:48 PM)
True. I don't think he will win this year, but Dega is the one wildcard where he might get it done.
Connie (Lufkin, TX)
Do you think that JJ and Chad mess with the heads of #24, #5 and #88 more than they do Rowdy, Kurt, Carl and those guys?
Terry Blount (2:48 PM)
No, but I know it's frustrating for Jeff that his team can't win the way the 48 does.
Terry, I remember you did your own championship odds before the chase started. Out of the 8 that are still in contention, have their odds changed? If so, what are they?
Terry Blount (2:50 PM)
I don't think they've chance much at the top. Kyle might be a little better than 10 to 1 now.
Mark (Mount Airy,MD)
Afternoon Terry, I liked your article on Paul Menard. I think he will show even more improvement next year. Thanks for pointing out that he has ability in addition to sponsorship.
Terry Blount (2:51 PM)
Thanks Mark. I just felt Paul gets unfairly criticized sometimes because of his father's money. Paul isn't the best driver in Cup, but he's far from the worst.
john (auckland new zealand)
Do you think that sponsorship is now far more important than driver talent?
Terry Blount (2:54 PM)
Sponsorship always has been important at the highest levels of racing, but both are important. The hope is teams owners can convince a sponsor to back someone because of this talent. That has become increasingly difficult for up-and-coming drivers.
hey terry, love your chats! where do you think justin allgaier will drive next year?
Terry Blount (2:57 PM)
He could drive for my team anytime. Oh wait. I don't have a team. But those who do would be crazy not to take him. As always, It's about sponsorship dollars and who has them. Right now, that's a tough thing to come by. Ask Jeff Gordon.
Earl (Wilmington, NC)
Terry, do you think that Harvick's practice stunt with Denny backfired on #29 with his 15th placed run and Denny in the top 10 and still leading pts.?
Terry Blount (2:59 PM)
No. I applaud Kevin for standing up for RCR's honor. That's have-at-it-boys they way it was meant to be. Send a message without endangering anyone. And Kevin and Denny are fine now. They're actually good friends off the track.
Chris Nulty (Crestview, FL)
"Paul gets unfairly criticized sometimes because of his father's money"Couldn't it also say be said that Junior gets unfairly criticized sometimes because of his father's legacy? Agree?
Terry Blount (3:00 PM)
I absolutely agree Chris. If his name was Dale Jones Jr., expectations would be much lower.
With sponsorship tight in NASCAR do you think we might see some of these NASCAR drivers ending up in INDY Cars?
Terry Blount (3:01 PM)
We might see Hornish back there next year. And it could be on Scott Speed's agenda.
Terry Blount (3:03 PM)
Gotta clock out folks. Have a great week. Shannon Spake and I will be reporting on NASCAR Now this weekend at KC, but she doesn't have to write columns like me. She's busy enough raising twin boys. Take care. Peace.
