Chris Mortensen (11:05 AM)
This league is so boring. So let's spice it up and make some stuff up about Randy Moss being traded by New Engand back to Minnesota to be with Brett Favre, after all...oh, that happened? Let's talk!
Mort! I am totally SHOCKED! In my opinion, Moss is still worth a 2nd to mid-1st round pick! I wish my COLTS would have made that kind of move ... 1/2 the rookies, espcially at WR never make a splash until year 2-3, Does this lower the Chargers asking price? Maybe the Pats have a scheme to use the MIN pick, and a 2nd rounder to land Vincent Jackson? Better long term upside than Moss, and the 3rd rounder is basically a free pick for the Pats to use ... Thoughts???
Chris Mortensen (11:09 AM)
As Cris Carter says a team won't really get the best of Randy Moss unless it satisfies his contract expectatons. Since a team gets him for only 3/4ths of a season, a 3rd rounder was not a shocker. I would be more surprised by the Pats making a play for Vincent Jackson than them dealing Moss... unless they try to rent Jackson for the rest of the year. Jackson is a personal conduct/substance abuse strike away from getting sat down for a long time and he wants $30 million guaranteed money.
Brian C (Orlando)
What happened to the Saints offense? Is Sean Payton's determination to run the ball using practice squad players more of a reaction to the defense or really his new philosophy of having a balance offense?
Chris Mortensen (11:11 AM)
It's always tougher for SB champion. Maybe there are some trends that Payton will adjust to...and Reggie Bush is his ultimate chess piece. The Saints have a big, physical O-line and I'm sure Payton is adjusting to whatever is happening. Long season.
Bigger surprise, KC 3-0, or Colts 2-2?
Chris Mortensen (11:13 AM)
I'll say KC 3-0 (and I don't want to hear argument about who they've played).... The Colts always seem to struggle in one of their games with Jaguars and the Texans took it to them. Plus, the injuries on defense (and O-line)....Peyton Manning can keep them competitive. I did speak with someone I respect greatly with the Colts before the year and he did not think anybody in the division, including his team would win 12 games this year.
With all the young guys on this team there is no way Belichick was going to tolerate one guy complaining endlessly in the locker room about lack of catches, especially after a win like Monday night's. The timing is surprising but the trade itself? Not really. Thoughts?
Chris Mortensen (11:17 AM)
Agree. That, plus the way the Patriots won the game was reminiscent of their first Super Bowl year, except that Brady is now a season pro. That first year, the Patriots were 24th in total defense and scored just 3 offensive TDs in 3 playoff games and 3 TDs in the playoffs via defensive turnovers/special teams. Who were the Patriots' receivers - good, smart, smaller guys. Plus, I don't know it's realistic to say Patriots are a Super Bowl contender but every team has its flaws.
MORT FAN (FL)
Hey Chris, Do you see Lesean Mccoy playing this week ?
Chris Mortensen (11:18 AM)
When I checked yesterday, the Eagles thought it was still possible and, by the way, they did not really get engaged in Marshawn Lynch. The Bills called them; the Eagles had no real interest.
How much longer will Dolphins stick with Henne?
Chris Mortensen (11:22 AM)
What I was told is that Henne showed enough improvement vs. Jets that he has bought himself some time. The Pats' game was mixed, obviously. This goes back to off-season practices training camp, preseason, early season concerns of accuracy. It's not a move I personally endorse but if it breaks down over the next month, I know discussions have occurred about a Pennington move and then Thigpen. But Sparano ultimately makes that decision.
Mort: My cards have been awful on defense, is it the loss of players, the scheme,what?...also what do you see them doing after this year to fix the Q.B. situation? thanks
Chris Mortensen (11:25 AM)
Karlos Dansby was a huge loss and the additions of Joey Porter and Clark Haggans has done nothing to help a scheme they wee familiar with. After this year, it's difficult to project on the QB. Maybe Max Hall gets enough starts to grow some confidence. It's difficult for me to get into next year. They also need to clean up that offensive line and obviously get some receivers healthy.
Carson (High Point,NC)
Will the Packers regret not going after Marshawn Lynch?
Chris Mortensen (11:27 AM)
I think so. The coaches and players (some) were disappointed to hear Lynch went to the Seahawks for just a 4th rounder and a conditional pick in 2012. He's only 24 years old; the Packers were going to pounce on him with the 16th pick of the first round when theBills took him at 12. But GM Ted Thompson just didn't want to part with draft picks. It sure puts a lot of pressure on Aaron Rodgers. I don't count them out but I think TT should have pulled the trigger.
Mort,Reports are starting to come out about Moss issues in the locker room and specifically on the plane ride home from Miami the other night. Did the Pat's take "less" ( 3rd rounder)to get rid of a growing cancer?
Chris Mortensen (11:29 AM)
Well, Moss has made himself pretty clear about how he felt. And we know the Patriots' way. He wouldn't have been a cancer but a distraction, yes.
with the addition of roethlisberger, is Pitt now the most dangerous team in AFC??
Chris Mortensen (11:30 AM)
I'd say yes but Ravens & Jets...and maybe the Chargers make their late-season run again... look like a handful right now.
Mort: all things being equall...who's the best player in the N.F.L?
Chris Mortensen (11:33 AM)
Peyton Manning... Troy Polamalu there, too. I'm basing it on current play and history. There's about 10 guys I could mention, almost evenly split among offense and defense.
Regarding the Packers, if there's one guy you want to put pressure on...isn't it Aaron Rodgers?
Chris Mortensen (11:35 AM)
Well, he's special but it's a big burden - even with the great plays he made vs. Lions, he also threw a couple of costly picks.
Hector (Edinburg, TX)
What do you think of Dez Bryant's play so far this season?
Chris Mortensen (11:36 AM)
The glimpses we've gotten of Bryant are pretty impressive. If he stays healthy, I believe his impact will be considerable and he'll help everyone around him.
You like Polamalu more than Patrick Willis, DeMarcus Ware, and Nmandi Asomugha?
Chris Mortensen (11:38 AM)
See, that's like splitting hairs and Troy has more hair! But, yes, I think Polamalu impacts run and pass defense for Steelers. Those others are all great, all part of that mention of saying there are 10 players we could debate and it's fairly split among offense and defense.
Harish (Fargo ND)
Chris, The pats would have gotten 3rd rd pick in 2011 even if moss left via free agency. Why did they settle for 3rd rounder? Was moss becoming a huge distraction that they just had to get rid of him? Minnesota got lucky!
Chris Mortensen (11:41 AM)
Yes, I love the trade for the Vikings. But it's uncertain about what the Patriots would've gotten in terms of compensatory pick for Moss. It's a mystery formula and if Moss had shut it down the rest of the year, his command on an open market in an uncertain 2011 didn't guarantee any 3rd rd compensatory pick.
Hey Mort do you think the Rams have a chance to take the NFC West? Bradford looking like Ryan a few years back!
Chris Mortensen (11:42 AM)
I have a chance to win the NFC West. But, yes, they have a chance. Bradford is a real gem but we're missing how well they're playing on defense, too, and then there's the beast, Steven Jackson. Will 8-8 win the division...7-9?
Panther Fan (Charlotte,NC)
Alright Mort, the Panthers obviously aren't going to make a splash next year and that means no John Fox in 2011. So who's taking over next year?
Chris Mortensen (11:46 AM)
When you find out, send me a message. Obviously, Bill Cowher is a name people have focused on even though I've heard mixed there. All in all, it's really early to start going down this path of speculation.
Is Hillis full time starter in Cleveland now or do you see Harrison and Davis stealing touches from him? thanks!
Chris Mortensen (11:48 AM)
As long as Hillis stays healthy, I see his status remaining the same
Mort - is Chris Petersen's name gaining any steam as a potential NFL coach? Thanks-
Chris Mortensen (11:51 AM)
Never heard of that. Doubt we will. Love him as a college coach, though, and he seems very content at Boise St, which is refreshing.
Mort, I know you enjoy fantasy football. Please talk about the impact of the Moss trade on Welker's value. Do you think his production will increase, decrease, or stay about the same. Thanks and keep up the great work.
Chris Mortensen (11:54 AM)
I think Welker is a 100-catch guy. They'll utilize those tight ends. So I think it stays the same.
Keith H (Seattle)
Good morning Chris. It seems the Seahawks are running a revolving door every week. I don't see it helping with their consistency at all. Bottom line, I see a good home team and a dreadful road team for them and 7-8 wins max. Your thoughts?
Chris Mortensen (11:57 AM)
The Seahawks' roster was so thin when GM John Schneider and Pete Carroll came on board, this constant roster turnover is not surprising. Remember, Schneider has some of his former boss Ron Wolf's DNA - use every means possible to improve the team and I think that's Pete's philosophy, too. Your win-loss projections applies all the NFC West teams.
What's Ray Lewis like off the field?
Chris Mortensen (11:58 AM)
Charming. Really. Treats people with respect. Based on what I know, he has grown into a great man, not just a great player.
Chris (Syracuse, NY)
How long before Buffalo releases the disappointing Aaron Maybin?
Chris Mortensen (12:00 PM)
Not now. He has some level of talent even if he was taken a little high. You have to develop him for a couple of more years, in my opinion.
Mort, you tweeted a couple of weeks ago that you were drinking the jets' kool-aid, Still drinking it? and how big a game is this Monday night for jets to prove their offense is legit?
Chris Mortensen (12:03 PM)
Yes. I feel better about saying it back then because it's easier to drink the Kool-Aid now. As for Monday night, it's a great game vs. Vikings but I don't judge teams based on one game. That being said, even with Moss now with the Vikings, I'm picking the Jets.
Bob (San Diego, CA)
Mort - regarding Tomlinson and the Jets. As a Bolts fan, I wish him well. But it was also time for him to leave. So instead of this - is he washed up, not washed. Lets just move forward - Chargers made a team decision best for them; Tomlinson seems to be helping the Jets - so it seems to be a win win. But Bart Scott - you can - well, ,, shut up please!. Thanks
Chris Mortensen (12:06 PM)
I think you're right, though I'm not going to tell Bart Scott to shut up. It was time to move on. LT said it himself. I did think the Jets commitment to run and quality of O-line would allow LT to be more productive but the Chargers' offense is in good hands.
Chris Mortensen (12:07 PM)
Yes, good reminder from Brett in Boston about players with 10 accrued seasons (like Moss) means Patriots couldn't have gotten better than a 5th round compensatory pick.
ryan (california )
Mort... Do you think landing Moss will solve the vikings problems There seems to be more issues then just the Wr position and bringing someone in like Randy Moss who is very outspoken and when he doesnt win he does not perform to his ability.
Chris Mortensen (12:10 PM)
He's not going to solve them all but he sure as heck helps. Defenses can't stack box for AP. If O-line can clean up its act, then this is pretty signficant, I think. As a player on another NFC North team told me last night, "This (trade) is not good news for us."
Hi Mort, are McDaniels and Orton right? Are the Titans and Fisher dirty?
Chris Mortensen (12:15 PM)
Look, the Titans have an identity. It is aggressive, physical, chippy, edgy. Jeff Fisher played and coach for Buddy Ryan. DC Chuck Cecil played that way. DL coach Jim Washburn is as good as they come and he just flat out coaches his guys to play to the whistle and to punish. A guy like Cortland Finnegan has had to fight all his life to prove himself - and he's a great guy off the field! McDaniels praised his team for staying disciplined and not engaging the Titans whereas Tom Coughlin had warned the Giants about it the week before and couldn't believe it when his players lost their composure vs. Titans with 5 unsportsmanlike conduct penalties.
