Andy Katz (4:05 PM)
Here to chat for a bit prior to our Midnight Madness special on ESPNU 9 p.m. to 1 a.m.
Zack (The EL)
Predicted final four and champion???
Andy Katz (4:11 PM)
Just don't hold me to it. DukeMichigan StatePurdueWildcard.....Pitt, Syracuse, Today I'll go with Duke, but I'm starting to lean toward either Sparty or Purdue.
Steve H (Cincinnati)
Who do you think will have a better freshman year, Kyrie Irving or Harrison Barnes?
Andy Katz (4:13 PM)
There is more pressure on Barnes than Irving. Duke would still be picked to win the ACC without Irving. Barnes has to deliver for the Tar Heels to be back in the NCAAs and a factor in March.
Brandon (Austin, TX)
Which Duke guard gets the most minutes this season behind Nolan Smith and Kyrie Irving?
Andy Katz (4:16 PM)
I would think Seth Curry unless Andre Dawkins is hot from the perimeter. But it's a good problem to have for the Blue Devils. That's four quality players to rotate on the perimeter.
JOE (LAS vEGAS)
As an UNM fan, what will it take for Steve Alford to recruit players that fit into his system and elevate UNM to a consistent to 25 team with a shot of getting to the Sweet Sisteen? Why does UNM have trouble getting top 15 teams to go to the Pit? If Duke and UNC can play other top teams at their places, why won't they come out west? Thanks.
Andy Katz (4:21 PM)
He's doing it the right way with a collection of high school seniors and four-year transfers. Top 25 teams aren't going to go to the Pit unless the games are on major television. Not having the games on ESPN hurts home-and-homes from the power six conferences save the Pac-10 and bottom of Big 12. I could see a lesser known SEC doing it not a Big Ten, ACC or Big East. That's the unfortunate reality.
Adam R (Connecticut)
Andy, could we see a repeat of last year's National Title game this year?
Andy Katz (4:25 PM)
Doubt it. That would be quite a feat if Butler were to get there again. Can't see how losing Gordon Hayward doesn't knock them down a few pegs. It's not the same when a school like Butler loses an NBA lottery pick.
jordan (louisville ky)
what do you think kentucky will be ranked with and without kanter at the start of the season
Andy Katz (4:28 PM)
Kentucky will be a top 20 team without Kanter. With him you could make the argument that Kentucky is top 10. Not sure when we'll get an answer.
Andy, can Juan Fernandez from Temple lead the Owls to another A-10 title?
Andy Katz (4:31 PM)
He should. But he won't do it alone. He needs a monster year out of Lavoy Allen. Temple will be seriously pushed by Xavier, Richmond and won't find an easy time dealing with Dayton or Rhode Island, either.
How many NCAA births does the Pac-10 get?
Andy Katz (4:32 PM)
Washington. And then I could see any number of teams competing such as: Arizona, UCLA, Washington State, USC.I'll say it will end up as three, one better than a year ago.
Michael Baldwin (Seattle, WA)
How many Tournament tickets are touted by the WCC?
Andy Katz (4:34 PM)
Gonzaga.Saint Mary's could be a bubble team with a decent non-conference schedule.
Nathan H (Queens)
Whats your thoughts on St. Johns in the next couple of years with Lavin. Im heading to Midnight Madness in a couple hours.
Andy Katz (4:37 PM)
Obviously Steve was a part of our team here at ESPN and did a great job. But I would say this regardless, he is the best person for this job at this time. He has the drive, the energy, the personality and the name to start pulling in recruits. I would be stunned if the Red Storm aren't a top eight Big East team under Lavin. I didn't say win the league but at least be in the discussion for bids.
How realistic are Kstate's chances of dethroaning KU in the Big 12?
Andy Katz (4:39 PM)
Very. KState has more experience returning. But how do the Wildcats handle the expectations now of being the favorite. Not knowing Josh Selby's situation makes it harder to pick KU.
Chris (Brooklyn, NY)
Will Kalin Lucas and Durrell Summers end up being the best backcourt in college hoops this year?
Andy Katz (4:44 PM)
Hard to project that as well. Lucas' Achilles injury makes it hard to bank on that tandem. But when healthy they're in the top five.
Donovan (Dallas, TX)
Do you think that the extended tournament will cause more upsets?
Andy Katz (4:46 PM)
The coaches seem to think there will be more upsets with the higher seeded teams taken out by the lower seeds that don't play in the First Four. We'll see if that's true.
How close is IU to being respectable again?
Andy Katz (4:48 PM)
Tom Crean is certainly trying. Crean is working his tail off attempting to revitalize Indiana. But I can't see the Hoosiers moving up beyond eighth this season.
Why are the Tarheels even a Top 25 team if they were not even top 65 at the end of last season. It's not like Branes is LeBron James!
Andy Katz (4:49 PM)
There is still talent and it's relative to what is left in the NCAA.
What could happen to Dunn of Baylor? Is it possible that he will miss playing time?
Andy Katz (4:56 PM)
If the case is dismissed then he could play immediately. If the case is ongoing then he could easily sit games until it is resolved.
Adam (Portland, OR)
Who wins the LOADED Big Ten?
Andy Katz (4:57 PM)
I'll go with Purdue.
Jon V (Indianapolis)
Do you think the Crossroads Classic (Butler, ND, IU, and Purdue) will be a good thing? Will it stick?
Andy Katz (4:57 PM)
Yes and yes.Great idea. How can you start this and then pull back?
WCC (San Bruno)
You're obviously not considering anyone else after St Mary's and Gonzaga. Watch out for Loyola Marymount.
Andy Katz (4:58 PM)
Not true. I do think Loyola will be a factor in the WCC.
James (Houston, TX)
Last year the NCAA at least let UK know Wall would be suspended 2 games before the season. Do you believe the NCAA will let UK know something about Kanter before the season? With or without it would just be easier to move forward with some kind of answer.
Andy Katz (4:58 PM)
I do think the NCAA will have a decision on Kanter prior to Nov. 1. Of course, I thought Renardo Sidney would know his fate last season prior to the end.
Andy Katz (5:00 PM)
Thanks for the chat.Watch on ESPNU our Midnight Madness show from 9 p.m. to 1 a.m.
