Chat with Andrea Adelson
Welcome to SportsNation! On Thursday, College Football Nation blogger Andrea Adelson stops by to chat about the season.
Adelson came to ESPN.com after serving as the Orlando Sentinel's college football blogger. She'll be keeping up with the national blog, while hosting Cover It Live events, as well as keeping track of the non-BCS teams.
Send your questions now and join Adelson Thursday at 4 p.m. ET!
Andrea Adelson (3:59 PM)
Hello and thanks for joining me today for another live chat. I want to let you know I may have to end around 4:45 -- expecting an interview with Boise State WR Austin Pettis. Now on to the questions!
Mike (So Cal)
So was AFA looking ahead last week against SDSU or does this look like an ugly Saturday against TCU? Kinda disturbed about so many trips to the red zone and settling for field goals.
Andrea Adelson (4:01 PM)
No, I think San Diego State is a very solid team, with an excellent run game and that seems to be an Achilles' heel for AFA this season. The red zone offense is disturbing, and I am not sure there will be much improvement in that area this week against a very tough TCU D. Also wonder how big an impact Jared Tew's absence is going to have. I do expect a close game, though. AFA has lost its 2 games by a combined 5 points. I know that hurts.
Chris Fiegler (Latham,NY)
Will the NCAA ever follow the NFL Footsteps by Suspending Players who Flagarantly Helmet to Helmet Hits that Causes Concussions or Players Paralyzed?
Andrea Adelson (4:04 PM)
Every helmet to helmet hit has to be reviewed by the each league office, and it is up to that league to determine whether there should be additional punishment. I can give you two examples from teams outside the power conferences this year in which this happened. Boise State S Winston Venable was suspended by the WAC for a half for flagrant hit on James Rodgers; East Carolina DB Derek Blacknall was suspended one game for a helmet-to-helmet hit against Southern Miss.
Andrea, I know the season isn't over, but is there anything good that BYU can take from this poor season to help them as they go into independence?
Andrea Adelson (4:06 PM)
Gret question, Kevin. I really hope BYU has done enough to develop Jake Heaps moving forward without shattering his confidence. JJ Di Luigi has been a tremendous bright spot. I also think the change at DC is going to be good for the team going forward, and having Mendenhall more involved as well. But what has to be disheartening is the lack of development of playmakers on offense. This is a team that usually reloads, so you have to wonder whether the talent is there to make a run next season.
Oregon wins 48-17 over UCLA tonight?
Andrea Adelson (4:06 PM)
Sure, that sounds about right. Can I mention that in our live chat of the game tonight?
David (Pacific Northwest)
Who's got the better shot at taking down Boise St. as of today: Hawaii or Nevada? Also, what about LA Tech? They come over to Boise on a Tuesday night, and look surprisingly good this year. Any chance? Thanks.
Andrea Adelson (4:08 PM)
Wow, you guys are throwing out the tough questions early today! Hawaii has to go to Boise, so I think I would give the edge to Nevada simply because it is the regular-season finale in Reno and the Wolf Pack are going to be really motivated. I do think Hawaii has the potential to give Boise State fits. Will be a big test of the secondary. I don't think there is any shot for Louisiana Tech. They have only looked good recently. Early in the season they had major QB problems. Jenkins is a great fit for that offense and is doing well, but I don't see it happening. Now all that said, I still think Boise State runs the table.
What do you think is the most memorable game of the season so far?
Andrea Adelson (4:09 PM)
Wow, now I have to scroll through the memory banks. I have to say my most memorable game is the way the LSU-Tennessee game ended for the sheer lunacy of it all.
Daniel Kittrell (Greenville, NC)
What about them Pirates?? What are your thoughts of ECU now? Knowing, historically, that UCF has a hard time against us; Do you think they will be able to beat us? after seeing ECU beat USM and NC State(2 very good defensive teams)
Andrea Adelson (4:11 PM)
Great question, Daniel. I give UCF the edge this year because the game is in Orlando, but it's not going to be easy for the Knights. I just think the UCF defense is better and will be able to slow down Davis. But I wouldn't be surprised if ECU won. I will say I have counted ECU out a lot this season. I see a question in my queue from ECU Pirates asking if I am ready to jump on the bandwagon. The Pirates have definitely been one of the most pleasant surprises of the season, and those two wins are very impressive. Just give the home team the edge.
How can non AQ teams (Boise State, TCU, Utah) gripe about their rankings when they don't play top competition? Their league schedules are weaker and then they aren't playing top teams in their non conference games. These teams aren't having as tough a road to end undefeated and aren't risking key injuries when their starters are out by halftime.TCU Non Conference:Oregon StateTennessee TechBaylorSouthern MethodistBoise State Non Conference:Virginia TechWyomingOregon StateToledoUtah Non Conference:PittSan Jose StateIowa StateNotre DameWith exceptions of Pitt and VT and arguably Oregon State and Notre Dame these aren't non conference schedules that make up for cupcake conferences. at least AQ programs that schedule weaker non conference schedules usually have a much tougher conference schedule that makes up the majority of their games. Can we please quit saying how great these teams are and how unfairly they are treated until they either schedule all non conf powerhouse teams or get in a more competitive conferece?
Andrea Adelson (4:14 PM)
Cory, Your gripes are the same as many fans out there. First off, you cannot start making "exceptions" for the non-conference teams that they play. Second, Utah has gotten itself into a more competitive conference with a move to the Pac-10, but let's not forget Utah was invited to join. I don't see anybody inviting Boise State and TCU. Third, Boise State is also making a move to a more competitive conference, joining the Mountain West over the WAC. Again, this was the only move Boise State could make. If the Broncos were content with beating up on WAC competition, they would have stayed in the WAC. The argument these teams don't "man up" and play anybody is a tired one. When they do schedule tough non-conference games, they are slapped down for not having enough of them. When they beat those non-conference teams, they are slapped down for only having to play 1 or 2 tough games a year. But when Oregon beats 0-6 New Mexico, the Ducks jump six spots in the polls. When Oklahoma beats Iowa State, the Sooners jump over TCU. But when Utah beats the same Iowa State team, the Utes drop a spot. Double standards everywhere.
John (Los Angeles)
Miss Adelson, first let me applaud your efforts towards our bid for a BSU national shot. Yes I am a bias fan from Idaho, but was educated in the Pac-10, and would like to set all statistics aside and look at the bare bones match up. I humbly believe BSU is the team to beat in this BCS football nation. Getting the brief opportunity to be recruited by Coach Peterson in high school, I can say from experience he is the best there is at what he does. My question to you is, if Virginia Tech wins the ACC, is Boise a shoe in for the title? How about a so so OSU beating #1 Oregon. Its hard to see two major programs both defeated by BSU in front, but there is a lot of season left. My prediction, Bama vs. BSU....
Andrea Adelson (4:16 PM)
John, I have nothing to do with whether Boise State makes it into a BCS title game. I have no vote in the Harris poll. I just write what I believe. That being said, I think Boise State needs help to get into the title game. I have always said that. The Broncos are not going to get in there if 2 power conference teams are undefeated. They need everyone to have at least one loss, and they need to go undefeated, and they probably need to be voted No. 1 in both human polls. I think there is an outside shot that happens, simply because I think there is no dominant team in college football this season.
Andrea, not sure if you can help with this or not, but maybe you know someone from ESPN who is more of an expert. You know that Massey's computer rankings are part of the BCS formula. However, if you go to his website, his numbers have changed in the last couple days since Sunday when they were posted for the first BCS. The rankings are the same, however, the data is now all different. Obviously being the first BCS poll, it isn't a life and death situation. But really raises a red flag that the numbers can, and now its proof that they are, being tweeked or changed, whether from mistakes, or whatever else you want to speculate.
Andrea Adelson (4:18 PM)
Jarrett, I received an e-mail about this as well. There was an article a few weeks ago in the Birmingham News that cited a mistake in Colley's rankings from a few weeks back as well. Very enlightening stuff that essentially says nobody is checking the work of the guys who do the computer rankings.http://www.al.com/sports/index.ssf/2010/10/fuzzy_math_by_the_bcs.html
Justin Williamson (Tennessee)
Do you think UCLA can make a game of it tonight against Oregon?
Andrea Adelson (4:20 PM)
Which UCLA team is going to show up? The one that beat Texas or the one that scored 7 against a California team that gave up 50-plus to Nevada? If Kevin Prince is out, it could be a long night.
Michael Pakkala (East Lansing,Mi)
Given MSU's schedule, with only Iowa and possibly Penn State being the real challenges (not saying an upset couldn't happen), do you think MSU can make it to #1 in the BCS? The BCS is so complicated with the varibles in creating its standings that I have no idea what to expect.
Andrea Adelson (4:21 PM)
It all depends on what happens with everybody else. The computer rank is No. 4, which is really good for the Spartans. They are going to need to finish ranked 1-2 without a doubt, because the polls are 2-3 of the formula.
Jake (Honolulu, HI)
Thoughts on the Pac 12 home field Conference Championship game?
Andrea Adelson (4:23 PM)
I actually like the idea. We have seen the ACC conference championship sometimes struggle to attract fans. I am not saying that I think that would happen in this case, but I like rewarding the team that has the best season. They should get a chance to win the championship at home.
After the release of the BCS standings, how do you feel about Boise State's chances of playing the NCG?
Andrea Adelson (4:23 PM)
My thoughts have not changed. I still have Boise State in the title game, but it is a long-shot prediction, and has been a long-shot prediction since I made it before the season started. It is going to take a lot for it to happen, but I do not think it is impossible.
Blaine Gabbert (Missouri)
Will I be walking or crawling off the feild Sat night?
Andrea Adelson (4:24 PM)
I think you will be walking, Blaine, but your team will have lost.
Shawn (Austin, TX)
How do you see the SEC race shake out and what are the odds of Texas winning the Big 12 South?
Andrea Adelson (4:26 PM)
I think Bama still wins the SEC in a game decided against Auburn on Nov. 26, then wins the SEC championship game over South Carolina. But I reserve the right to change my East pick because that champion has changed every week with the mess that has ensued in that division ;)Texas is going to need a whole lot of help for that to happen, including Oklahoma to lose twice since the Sooners won the head-to-head. I still think Oklahoma wins it.
Zach (Boise, Idaho)
Where will BSU be in the rankings on Sunday?
Andrea Adelson (4:27 PM)
Wish I knew. We thought Boise would be at No. 1 at this time last week but ended up No. 3. Too many variables to figure out, not only with how teams play but how their opponents play, too. If Auburn wins, there is a chance the Tigers overtake them, but it depends on how the pollsters vote.
Chris (P-I-T-T) (Pittsburgh)
should pitt win out and get the BCS bid for the big east?
Andrea Adelson (4:28 PM)
Do I think Pittsburgh is going to win out? No. I think West Virginia wins the Big East.
What CUSA team has been the biggest surprise this year?
Andrea Adelson (4:30 PM)
I am going with East Carolina on this one. I know ECU fans are well aware that I did not have the Pirates going to a bowl game in my first projections of the season. I simply did not expect the Pirates to be able to overcome the loss of 14 starters, especially with a new head coach coming in implementing a new system. Give Ruffin McNeill credit for the job he has done. Same for Dominique Davis, who has to be the newcomer of the year.
Which of the following two teams are more deserving THIS season if all are undefeated-TCU,Utah,Boise ST?
Andrea Adelson (4:31 PM)
They can't all be undefeated, TCU and Utah play each other. But right now I have Boise State and TCU ranked higher than Utah.
Can Okla St catch me?
Andrea Adelson (4:32 PM)
There is a very good chance of that. I wonder how that game is going to impact you from a mental aspect, having to recover from a subpar came and being benched.
Ryan (Salt Lake City)
Are you going to make it out to SLC for the TCU v Utah game? The house is gonna be rockin' for that one!!
Andrea Adelson (4:32 PM)
Don't know yet, Ryan, but I would love to go. All depends on the assignments that week. Going to be an awesome game!
Andrea I was wandering where would Missouri land on BCS if and when (fingers crossed) they knock off Oklahoma?
Andrea Adelson (4:35 PM)
A lot of that depends on where the voters put Missouri in the polls, and who loses ahead of the Tigers. We have to watch and see if voters are going to keep the Sooners ahead of them, too. That has been known to happen (already happened this year with Bama being ranked ahead of South Carolina despite losing head-to-head. Non issue now of course since South Carolina lost). The computer rank is already strong, at No. 6, and that would improve as well. The computer rank is what has Mizzou at No. 11 in the BCS because the poll ranking is so low.
Jake (Honolulu, HI)
What are the odds of Utah running the Pac 12 South (and with USC Being ineligible) to play in the inaugural Conference Championship game?
Andrea Adelson (4:37 PM)
I think Utah would be the favorite right now. Utah does have a veteran team, but the Utes would be returning Jordan Wynn, DeVonte Christopher, five of the players on its front seven and nearly its entire secondary.
Ryan (Salt Lake City)
Who is the better qb in utah, Cain or Wynn?
Andrea Adelson (4:38 PM)
Great question, Ryan. I am going to go with Wynn on this one, though I know he had struggles last week against Wyoming. I just think he has more of a chance to put up big points with his arm and consistently move the ball down the field.
Bama Fan (Denver)
Andrea if only one team emerges undefeated from the Pac 10, Big 10 and Big 12, and Alabama runs the table, does Alabama get into the title game over an undefeated Boise or TCU?
Andrea Adelson (4:40 PM)
That could happen, and I think that is the big question makr everyone wants to have answered this year. Alabama is at No. 7 right now and has every opportunity to move on up if it keeps winning.
Andrea Adelson (4:44 PM)
I am chatting with Austin Pettis on the phone now, stay right there I will be back in a few minutes!
Andrea Adelson (4:49 PM)
OK here I am, let's get back to your questions.
Mark (Orlando, FL)
Will Cam Newton win the Heisman Trophy this year?
Andrea Adelson (4:49 PM)
If he continues the way he is playing, then yes I would say he is the front-runner.
How about the ND Navy game? Who do you think will win and why?
Andrea Adelson (4:50 PM)
I picked Navy to win in an upset special. Notre Dame has struggled against the option offense, and is missing some playmakers on its own offense. Navy has also struggled on offense at times, too. So I picked a low-scoring game, Navy wins 20-18.
Andrea: Wen are we going to hear news on WAC expansion? Wouldn't it be in their best interest to take all five schools in consideration (UTSA, Texas St. Montana, Denver, and Seattle)? The should take the two football for 2011-2012 to help towards the 5-6-7 rule should LA Tech or Hawaii decide to leave in the near future and then the other 3 for 2012-2013 after Fresno and Hawaii leave.
Andrea Adelson (4:52 PM)
We should hear something pretty soon. I know last month WAC commissioner Karl Benson said some on-campus visits would be scheduled and then they might have some news this month. I think a lot of what we are waiting on is what happens with Nevada and Fresno State. The league wants them to stay through 2011-12. Those teams want to go. The WAC needs to know how many teams it is going to have before it can move forward, I think, though none of the football playing schools you mentioned would be eligible for FBS play next season.
How much impact will Boise have to absorb from not being on ESPN next year? They are on a lot and talked about a lot, but how about when they are no longer contracted with ESPN, especially light of past comments about the MWC and their TV package by analysts like Herbstreit...
Andrea Adelson (4:54 PM)
It is a great unknown at this point, Matthew. I think Boise State would be on ESPN for some of its marquee non-conference games, but that certainly did not hurt TCU last season. The Horned Frogs were the highest non-AQ team to finish out, and had a chance for a national championship if things had turned out differently between Texas and Nebraska.
Wisky @ Iowa who wins?
Andrea Adelson (4:55 PM)
I have got Iowa winning out.
Andrea, you cannot possibly believe your argument that teams with the same record are equal. Just admit it, you made a mistake writing that piece.
Andrea Adelson (4:57 PM)
You want me to admit that I think Oregon is better than Boise State? Not going to happen. The teams that both have played to this point today are not that far from each other. Let's see, New Mexico, Porltand State, Washington State -- heavy hitters like New Mexico State and San Jose State for Boise State. Stanford and Va. Tech were both Top 10 teams when they played 'em. Tennessee is a train wreck.
Why is nobody giving Utah any love this year? Has TCU's performance been that much more incredible that nobody gives Utah a shot at home in a few weeks?
Andrea Adelson (4:58 PM)
Every Utah fan must read from the same script. I cannot tell you how many times I have heard Utah gets no love. I think the fact that TCU has beaten Oregon State and Baylor has given the Horned Frogs more "cred" than Utah, which has wins over Pittsburgh and Iowa State in non-conference.
Andrea Adelson (4:58 PM)
Also, a reminder that you will have a better chance to have your question answered if I have not answered it already on this chat.
Chris (Fullerton, CA)
Does anyone know if Gary Patterson knew that Ed Wesley had been knocked unconscious or did he think he just took a big hit?
Andrea Adelson (5:00 PM)
Good question. The facts appear to be murky, and now TCU has put out a statement saying there was a miscommunication with Patterson and the team doctor. I don't think we will ever know, because Patterson says he can't comment completely based on privacy laws.
Why isn't New Mexico in your bowl projections? Do you realize that they will be bowl eligible if they win their next 6 games?
Andrea Adelson (5:01 PM)
You're right. I can totally see New Mexico beating SAn Diego State, Air Force, and TCU. What am I thinking?
Andrea Adelson (5:03 PM)
OK thanks for joining me today on my live chat. Join me again tonight as I chat the UCLA-Oregon game live with Pac-10 blogger Ted Miller. See you then!
