Stephania Bell (3:01 PM)
Welcome to the Friday chat friends: Plenty going on in the world of injuried heading into Week 10! What has you talking today?
Steve (colorado springs)
Can you please let me know the latest on the health of the Indy RB's?
Stephania Bell (3:03 PM)
Hi Steve: Looks like Donald Brown will be at the helm this week with Addai likely OUT and Hart prob not playing either.
Do u think Steve Smith (NYG) will play this week being that he is having to deal with his pectoral muscle/
Stephania Bell (3:04 PM)
Bobby: No - word is Smith will be out - and may miss extended time. Don't know much in the way of detail yet but fantasy owners should be making backup plans right now.
Johnny Boy (tim-buck-two)
Stephania, great work on the injury front. I keep hearing Drew Stanton and not Shaun Hill this week? And, I hear Goodson has been given the start in Carolina? Does that mean we won't see D Williams?
Stephania Bell (3:06 PM)
THanks Johnny Boy! Well - last I heard the plan was Hill unless there was a setback - have not seen anything different yet...And yes, Goodson starts - both Williams and Stewart already OUT this week.
do you think the harvin and or rice will play this sunday?
Stephania Bell (3:09 PM)
Mike: Looking like Rice has a chance. He has been activated from the PUP list to the 53-man roster and is officially listed as questionable. He could show up on the field - probably only for limited action. Harvin will be listed as questionable. Interesting b/c Minny beat writers reporting that Childress had said Harvin would be doubtful. Apparently he's some better than that. Have to believe if he's feeling better, he will play. And FYI, Berrian also listed as questionable b/c of groin.
Arnold (Los Angeles)
Is Beanie Wells going to play, and will he start?
Stephania Bell (3:11 PM)
Arnold: Not sure yet if he'll play -haven't heard whether he was able to do anything in practice today. But Kent Somers of the Arizona Republic, who has the pulse of the team, thinks Hightower gets the start, in particular b/c Wells has missed so much practice. Clearly Wells is not fully healthy, whether he plays or not - and I think all the missed practice time prevents him from getting more opportunity to be on the field, period.
What would be a typical time for a strain/partially torn pec muscle to heal? Is this really painful?
Stephania Bell (3:14 PM)
Chuck: All depends on the degree of strain. If it was a complete tear, might be surgical. Sounds like it's not that, but still a lot of variability in terms of what the injury is. Could be multiple weeks - and yes, tearing tissue like that definitely painful.
I listened to your convo with Gates on Football Today. It sounds like he's optimistic he'll return next week. What was your take away from it?
Stephania Bell (3:15 PM)
Austin: Thanks for listening! Yes, he certainly sounds encouraged and based on how he's improving, I think there's reason to believe he COULD get back...but it may be harder when he tries to run. He was very truthful talking about the healing process and just seeing how it responds daily. Very fortunate for him to have the bye week now.
jeff (cambridge ma)
hows tamme doing?
Stephania Bell (3:17 PM)
Jeff: Back in full practice Thursday so I suspect he will play.
How is Vernon Davis looking?
Stephania Bell (3:17 PM)
Glen: Not on the injury report this week so I like that going into a game.
Stephania, please help. What is the status of Torain? I have either him or Thomas Jones as my flex and I don't know if I want to risk waiting on Torain.
Stephania Bell (3:20 PM)
Max: I think you answered your own question really. It will be a waiting game until Monday night. He was limited Thurs, although did more than the day before, need to see how his hamstring responds to a couple of days work back to back...the extra day works in his favor but may not be enough to be totally over it. Bit of a gamble, esp if you don't have backup on Mon night.
Bill (Fort Atkinson, WI)
Based solely on health, would you start Mike Goodson over Ryan Torain? Torain's injury and his head coach worry me.
Stephania Bell (3:23 PM)
Bill: As a follow, yes I prob would. I made the decision to start McGahee last night instead of wait for Torain - and I got a 0, so maybe I will watch Torain put up at least single digit fantasy points and be a little bummed. But it would have been worse - for me - to wait on a guy who might be cancelled out b/c of injury and have no options. Can't always make the right choice - McGahee got me 11 last week and I would never start him over a healthy Torain - but everyone who knows me knows I am risk averse. Prefer healthy and known and taking my chances that way.
What's the situation with M. Williams(Sea.) I thought I heard something about a bad finger. Will he play?
Stephania Bell (3:25 PM)
Jeff: Finger limited him in Thurs practice. So far there is no indication that he's in danger of missing. But since it's west coast we don't ahve the practice report in yet. Would like to see that he was out there again today.
What's the situation with Matt Schaub? He's probable but how serious was the "injury" sustained in week 9? Any chance of aggravating it?
Stephania Bell (3:27 PM)
Aaron: He took a really hard shot in the ribs/abdominal area. Definitely has been sore this week but obviously not keeping him out of the lineup. Yes, a good shot to the area could potentially aggravate it but they might have him wear extra padding to help protect him.
Dave (Charlottesville, VA)
From one Princeton Tiger to another, what's the word on Carson Palmer's shoulder
Stephania Bell (3:28 PM)
Dave: Hello fellow Tiger. Team has only been calling it soreness and he was expected back throwing today. Sounds like the Bengals were not concerned about him missing the game but more about getting him adequate rest on a short week.
do you think Stafford will be out for the year with his shoulder injury?
Stephania Bell (3:31 PM)
Chris: It certainly looks like he'd be out at least a few weeks. So much depends on just how much damage there is this time around. If the injury is the same degree of damage or worse, then I suspect he might be done. If less, then maybe he returns. But the fact he was out 6 games and then re-injured is not a great indicator. He's expected to see Dr. Andrews on Monday and we should know more after that.
Will I get Floyd back next week?
Stephania Bell (3:32 PM)
Jeff: Not a lock - but signs are encouraging that the team hopes to have him.
Vince Young's ankle is still limiting him and they are saying game time decision. Could this just be a ruse and he's good to go? Seems like the bye week should've let him heal. Is Favre a "safer" play? I've already lost Romo and Stafford, seems like I'll be using injured QB's for the rest of the season.
Stephania Bell (3:34 PM)
Josh: Don't believe it's a ruse at all. Bad sprains can take weeks or months to heal. I imagine that they are limiting his activity in the week in the hope that he can go Sunday and actually feel better doing so. And it's hard to find any fully healthy players at this time of year - so you try to go with the healthi-"EST"
Blair White - will he play? he is my back up and i dont need him this week. should i drop him?
Stephania Bell (3:36 PM)
Eric: Certainly appears to be in doubt right now. He didn't practice today or yesterday, will probably be listed as q and come down to gametime.
What does it take to get a question answered around here!?!I have been offered Andre Johnson for Ahmad Bradshaw. I am concerned about Andre Johnson's ankle. Is their a legitimate risk of him missing time this season due to it?
Stephania Bell (3:39 PM)
Patrick: Usually, manners. Secondly - proper spelling. But we'll make an exception for both since a lot of folks wonder about Johnson. He missed one week - but in the absence of a significant setback, I doubt he misses more time. He is managing the ongoing swelling and pain by limiting his practice. And he will play this week for sure. But as is the case with any injury, if there's a setback, then sure, he could miss time. But so could Bradshaw. I don't think the risk is huge.
Owen Daniels OUT, right?
Stephania Bell (3:39 PM)
Travis (Spring Lake, MI)
How is S-Jax's finger coming along?
Stephania Bell (3:41 PM)
Travis: Still limited in practice through Thursday but that's not altogether a surprise. Avoid too much work Friday and allow him to save it for Sunday.
Stephania Bell (3:43 PM)
FYI: Hearing now that V Young did less in practice today compared to Thursday and the call for QB will be a gtd. Certainly don't like the decreased activity on a Friday, especially when you have a new star receiver in the mix. We'll see if there are any hints Saturday morning, but we may be stuck with a last minute decision.
Steve (San Jose)
How's Austin Collie doing? I haven't heard anything about his test results or if he's even gone through them.
Stephania Bell (3:44 PM)
Steve: They've been quiet. He was ruled out so early that I imagine he is spending most of the week resting. We will not likely hear anything until a couple of days into next week.
Following up on the Torain questions, what's the word on Portis? If he plays and takes carries thats just one more issue.
Stephania Bell (3:46 PM)
Dan: Good point. I have a hard time seeing him playing knowing the Washington Post reported yesterday he was having some swelling and soreness in the groin after increased work Wednesday. They may not make the decision until Monday making it tough on all fantasy owners, but I would not be confident counting on him - even if he does play - as I doubt they give him a ton of work when he first returns.
Dear Ms. Bell, might I trouble you for some information and expert advice? What exactly is Driver's injury, and what is his status? Do you think he is still worth a roster spot?
Stephania Bell (3:48 PM)
Raymond: Now there are some manners! Happy to oblige...Driver has a quad strain. It was bad enough to have him on crutches a few days ago, but the team is still saying they're hopeful of having him Week 11. Like all muscle strains you have to see how he responds to increasing activity after a period of rest. If it were me, I'd be looking for an alternate, but would possibly still keep him on my bench as long as it wasn't keeping me from having other roster needs met.
Any update on McCluster? He has lots of value in my return yardage + ppr league. Thanks!
Stephania Bell (3:50 PM)
Ernie: Doing slightly more work in practice - but he was doing so little before that this is not a huge improvement necessarily. I'm guessing he might be listed as q, but not play for another week.
when will reggie bush be back?
Stephania Bell (3:52 PM)
Trevor: Probably next week.
Ryan Vanatta (lebanon, tn.)
49er's were my childhood favorite team, with Rice and Co. Now I live in Titan country so am a Titan. With that said what about Brady he is on the injury report every week?
Stephania Bell (3:54 PM)
Ryan: He is! But usually it's his shoulder, now it's his foot. The report is a sprained foot and while Brady has been back doing some work, this certainly could affect his mobility. Not that he's a huge running QB, but it hurts his escapability, not what you want facing the Steelers. So while it won't keep him out, it could impact his game a bit.
Rock Chalk Stephie! (The Phog)
One Last try! Didn't know you worked at KU... Sports management grad here! Is Pierre Thomas worth trading for a stretch run?
Stephania Bell (3:57 PM)
Yep - was there for 5 years - would love to get back for college hoops this year...Anyway - I thought you were asking about trading him away - and I wondered who would take him. I'd probably wait another week before making the trade if you're thinking about acquiring him. He is reportedly improving, but before you give something up to get him, at least see him return to the practice field. Sounds like the team hopes to get him back in practice next week...but there might be a bit longer before he could return to play, if all goes well.
Kim Deal (CA)
Stephania, and word on the health of the Seahawks o-line? I've have to choose between Beanie and Lynch. Thanks!
Stephania Bell (4:00 PM)
Kim: Okung was back in limited practice - still not sure if he plays, but it's encouraging. And for what it's worth, I'd take Lynch over Wells. I just have not seen enough from Beanie to feel at all confident that he can do much of anything.
bob (by the bay)
Is Reggie Bush going to be worth picking up or is his leg going to be an issue for a while?
Stephania Bell (4:01 PM)
Bob: Worth a pickup. Think he's chomping at the bit to come back and the time off has been good.
Chris (Via mobile)
Ms. Bell sorry but 3 torain questions got answered, please talk to me about Heath Miller. Thanks
Stephania Bell (4:03 PM)
Chris: True - but Torain much more fantasy interesting for most, unfortunately. He had not practiced through Thursday b/c of fluid on his knee but have not heard yet whether he was able to go today. Will have his update on Saturday in my blog.
The dreaded Ryan Mathews question. Is he going to be ok for next week or time to drop him?
Stephania Bell (4:04 PM)
Travis: I think the bye came at a really good time for him. Believe he'll be back and starting in Week 11 but we'll know more middle of next week. And if you haven't read the story on him and his mom on ESPN.com, check it out. He's probably a lot tougher than most of us gave him credit for...
Stephania Bell (4:05 PM)
OK everyone - thanks so much for coming to the chat. Time for me to move along. I appreciate all of your awesome questions. Will have the latest updates in tomorrow's blog on ESPN.com. Hope to have you in the viewing audience on Sunday when Fantasy Football Now is on ESPN2. Good luck in Week 10!!!
