Beano Cook (3:05 PM)
Good afternoon and welcome. I had a winner last week with Texas Tech and am 5-5 right now. We have four Saturdays left and I need to get three of them to have a winning record. Unlike college football, a .500 record doesn't get me bowl eligible.
Travis C. (Lake Highlands)
All right Beano, it's the question everyone wants to ask you. What's your take on the Cam Newton news? Should he be ineligible for the Heisman or even kicked off the team? Is this just dirty tricks by other SEC schools?
Beano Cook (3:07 PM)
I want to see what happens. Right now, I would vote for him but a lot is going on and I want to wait and see how this plays out. The obvious question is, if not Newton, who would I vote for? If not Newton, I have two players from the Pac-10 high on my list...you can figure it out.
Dolores (Rego Park)
Do you think Alabama cares about the rest of its season after falling out of the national championship picture?
Beano Cook (3:08 PM)
If Auburn wasn't on the schedule, I might say yes. Sure they care. They will still show up against Mississippi State this week and I guarantee they will be fired up Thanksgiving week. They could be 0-10 or 0-11 and they would be fired up for that one.
Does TCU go into Norman, Stillwater, Lincoln, The Swamp, Tiger Stadium and win?
Beano Cook (3:09 PM)
Neither would the Steelers... Look, all TCU do is play the games on their schedule. If they qualify number one or two, they have every right to play for the national title. Winning by 40 at Utah is still pretty impressive.
Jeff (cincinnati,oh 45239)
Hey Beano, what are the chances Ohio State passes Wis in the BCS if both teams win out. Wis plays no more ranked teams and the Buckeyes still have to play Iowa.
Beano Cook (3:11 PM)
I have been asked that. It will be close but I don't think Ohio State or Wisconsin can get far enough up the BCS standings to play for the national title, which is what I think you are getting at.
Daniel (Pasadena, CA)
Beano, its been over a week since the last baseball game was played. Im anxious for some hardball. Cant wait for spring training. Any tips on how I can calm my nerves till then?
Beano Cook (3:12 PM)
You should see a doctor if you miss baseball.
Beano -- let me play devil's advocate for a second. Cam Newton was caught buying stolen computers and possibly was cheating at Florida, this is fact. Now he and his father are accused in a pay to play scheme. Why should we believe the Newtons and give them the benefit of the doubt, knowing Cam's history at Florida?
Beano Cook (3:13 PM)
The stuff in Florida...whatc an I say. I am more concerned if money was involved in the recruiting. If it is proven that money exchanged hands, I would not vote for him for the Heisman Trophy.
Do you believe Stanford could win 11 games and end up in the Alamo Bowl...seems pretty unfair to me. They can talk about TCU and Boise and the BCS, but there is something wrong with this scenario.
Beano Cook (3:15 PM)
I understand that if Oregon plays in the national championship game, there is a conflict because if Stanford is 11-1, they will be picked for a BCS bowl as an at-large. They will get a wild card in my opinion, at the very least.
If I'm a Heisman voter, I'm not too happy about the 2005 award being vacated earlier this year. I'd be extremely wary about voting for Newton. After all, its not like Kellen Moore is a bad player or undeserving, right? If Boise gets left out of the national championship game yet again, would Heisman voters consider voting for Moore as a sort of consolation prize for the school?
Beano Cook (3:16 PM)
No, I don't see that. I may vote for him, but right now I have him below a few guys, but he is on my list to consider. I don't think people would vote for him as a consolation prize.
Beeno, Do you really think there is any game remaining on the Ducks schedule that Oregon doesn't win by 20?
Beano Cook (3:19 PM)
Arizona and Oregon State can be more competitive. This is college football. I don't think anyone will beat Oregon, but there have been bigger upsets in colllege football. Let me give an example. In 1942, Boston College was undefeated and had a shot at the national title. In the last game of the season, an average Holy Cross team beat the Eagles 55-13...I rest my case. OK, another one, 1950. Army had not lost a game since 1947 and was #1 in the country. Navy was terrible. Navy 14, Army 2. I rest my case a second time.
Dave (Euclid OH)
Hi Beano---Not a question, just a comment. I have long been a proponent that Joe Pa should retire, until i saw his post game speech last week. He is what college football should be about. God bless him. Stay as long as you can Joe-----DT
Beano Cook (3:21 PM)
I think next season will be his last, though I am like you...if he thinks he can still coach, than he should coach.
What do you think of the way Virginia Tech has responded after a slow start? You should go to Blacksburg to see a game as the fans are really great down there.
Beano Cook (3:23 PM)
I have never seen a game down there and I know I am missing something. I give Frank Beamer a lot of credit as he and his staff have kept the team together after the 0-2 start.
Hey Beano,Do you think Les Miles will ever come back to Michigan? Les being a Michigan guy understands the Big 10 and their rivalries. I would love to see Les come back home and give us a chance to beat Ohio State. Thoughts or comments. Thanks.
Beano Cook (3:24 PM)
I can't answer that...I don't know. The pressure at LSU is a lot greater than the pressure at Michigan. Coaching football in the SEC is the otughest job in sports, pro or college.
Do you think Bobby Bowden is laughing watching the Noles struggle and seeing the stadium not nearly sold out?
Beano Cook (3:25 PM)
I don't think he is mad at the football team, but mad at the way he was treated by the Florida State administration.
What would be the point spread on the 1983 Nebraska team vs 2010 Oregon team? I would think Oregon by 10 1/2? After the game, the Cornhusker players would think- wow, never seen plays like that. And Oregon would say, "They were small but really talented."
Beano Cook (3:26 PM)
I think Oregon would be favored, but no way it would be 10 1/2. The 1983 team lost to Miami 31-30...that was still a pretty good team to say the least.
Beano - Better job Colorado or Minnesota???
Beano Cook (3:27 PM)
You are better off working for the state. You cannot win on a consistent basis at either school, and the fans should understand that.
Beano you think the bowls would pick Standford as an at-large over say Ohio State to play in a bowl other than the Rose. You might want to take the advice you gave to the individual who misses baseball right now.
Beano Cook (3:28 PM)
We have to see how it plays out. There are still a lot of games to be played to determine the bowls.
Walt (San Diego)
Auburn's response to the Cam Newton cheating allegations are that he has done everything asked of him since he enrolled at Auburn. That is fine, but it doesn't change the fact he allegedly committed academic fraud several times and was going to be expelled. He's a fine football player but his transgressions should be acknowledged and considered before annointing him sainthood, as well as the Heisman Trophy, which does and should consider off-the-field issues. It's not one source - it's 4 or 5 saying the same thing.
Beano Cook (3:29 PM)
You used the word alleged. I think that is very important to note. There are also privacy laws and the stuff linked is interesting, but what has truly been proven.
Tom (South Bend)
Do you think Brian Kelly is in any trouble at ND?
Beano Cook (3:30 PM)
No. I don't think he is in trouble. This is his first season, so give him some time.
Let's assume Auburn loses and TCU gets into the Title game against Oregon. What does that say about College Football, that a team that has won 27 straight games and 39 of its past 40 gets shut out of the National Championship (and perhaps the BCS altogether) in favor of two teams that it beat the year before?
Beano Cook (3:33 PM)
That was last year. The system in place tskes into account this season. I understand Boise would have a complaint if it goes undefeated and gets snubbed from the national title game. I don't feel Boise State would be left out of the BCS altogether, no way. I hope they don't put TCU and Boise State against each other like they did last year, if Auburn and Oregon play for the title.
Mike (Pageland, SC)
The Gamecocks travel to Gainesville this weekend to try and win their first SEC East title. How do you like their chances after the beat down from Arkansas last weekend?
Beano Cook (3:35 PM)
Number one, that game meant nothing. I agree that South Carolina should have played a little better. I am rooting for South Carolina and Steve Spurrier, but I think Florida will win. It would be ironic if Florida and Auburn met for the SEC title!
Beano, With recruiting being so National now for most schools, why can't Colorado maintain a winning program?
Beano Cook (3:36 PM)
I am not saying they can't have a winning program, I am saying they cannot do it consistently. It is a state school in a state that doesn't have that many great football players.
Dolores O' Riordan (Limerick, Munster, Ireland)
Wouldn't it be more fitting if Notre Dame played Syracuse rather than Navy in Ireland in 2012? Do you think Notre Dame & Syracuse should become permanent rivals for the sake of Ireland? Fighting Irish vs. Orangemen = Catholics vs. Protestants
Beano Cook (3:36 PM)
Matt W (San Francisco, CA)
Who do you see the Big East adding to the conference (in football) over the next couple years?
Beano Cook (3:38 PM)
Villanova for sure. Central Florida would be a logical choice. I still feel that no matter who the league adds, it will still be the weakest of the BCS conferences.
Do you really think oregon will go undefeated? they hav some tough games vs az who got run ovr by standfrod but just got bak there qb, and the civil war vs oregon st
Beano Cook (3:39 PM)
California this week in Berkeley may not be easy too. The Golden Bears are a different team at home. We will see what happens on the field. As I said earlier, stranger upsets have happened.
Nick M. (Atlanta, GA)
Beano, lost in the shuffle this week is whether Georgia can pull an upset at Auburn this Saturday. They've won 4 in a row and 5 of 6 against Auburn...can they do it?
Beano Cook (3:39 PM)
It is a rivalry game. Auburn is playing at home, which is one advantage. I think the Tigers will concentrate on the game.
Eamon (Evanston, IL)
Beano--We won't see a rematch of the TCU-BSU this year; if Auburn and Oregon play for the title, TCU gets picked for the Rose Bowl, as is mandated for the highest ranked non-AQ. The other slot goes to the Big Ten champion, as per the bowl contract.
Beano Cook (3:40 PM)
Good point. A relief since I did not want to see TCU-Boise again.
I know Mark Richt (Georgia) has been on the hot seat from early losses this year. However, do you think he will be back at UGA? I am hoping yes, because I believe the change should happen on the offense side. If yes, will he be allowed to make adjustments to his offense staff, since the offensive coordinator is married to Vince Dooley's daughter?
Beano Cook (3:41 PM)
If I had to make a prediction, then I would have to say yes. The pressure would really be on him next year.
Chad (Las Vegas)
@Eamon-But IF AU and Oregon both lose we could see TCU/BSU in Glendale.
Beano Cook (3:42 PM)
Yes, that is true too. Lots of football to be played. That would be something if TCU-Boise State met for the title. It would be an interesting game.
Mike (Los Angeles)
How do you think Lane Kiffin is doing? I had my doubts about him, but his demeanor and USC's awesome offense leads me to believe that the Trojans will be back sooner than later.
Beano Cook (3:43 PM)
There will still be a few rough years due to scholarship limitations.
Jermaine Norfolk,Va [via mobile]
Do Auburn & Oregon both has a ligit chance at running the table and meet in the BCS Championship game?
Beano Cook (3:44 PM)
They have a shot, but there are roadblocks too. Auburn has to go to Alabama.
Is Oklahoma State underrated?
Beano Cook (3:44 PM)
Yes, I would say so. Blowing out Baylor last week was a good statement. Losing to Nebraska was a bad statement. The Texas game will be intriguing.
Todd (Austin, Texas)
Beano, should Jimmy Johnson gone for the tie versus Notre Dame in 1988?
Beano Cook (3:46 PM)
Maybe he should have.
Beano---Simple question really: Have you been more impressed with the body of work of TCU or Boise this season. TCU owns the more impressive victory at Utah, but Boise has not had one down game and TCU looked less than impressive against SMU and Colorado State (6-0 at halftime)?
Beano Cook (3:47 PM)
I have been impressed with both, especially the way Boise State came back and beat Virginia Tech.
Do you think Chris Peterson will leave Boise State for a coaching job else where this year?
Beano Cook (3:49 PM)
I would say no. He has had chances to go elsewhere and he seems happy at Boise. I think that ADs would want to go after him. Look, Dan Hawkins left Boise for Colorado and look what happened there.
BC - where does al golden end up?
Beano Cook (3:49 PM)
Al Golden should be somewhere. If these ADs don't interview Golden they should be fired. He has done a great job at Temple.
Heads up today does TCU beat Alabama in the Sugar Bowl?
Beano Cook (3:50 PM)
I don't know. If they meet, I will give an opinion.
Laurie (Alabama )
What does Nick Saban mean when he says Alabama is too results-oriented right now and it hurting their game? Could there be something else, in particular, wrong with Alabama right now?
Beano Cook (3:51 PM)
They lost to two good teams ont he road in the toughest conference in the country.
Beano Cook (3:52 PM)
South Carolina had an open date before the Alabama game. It was a huge game for Spurrier. The LSU game was a must win in a way for Les Miles. It happens, especially in the toughest conference in America. Toughest pro or college!
Everyone keeps pointing to Boise's impresive 1 touchdown win against Va Tech. If Ohio State, Michigan State, Wisconsin, Alabama, LSU, Nebraska Missouri.....had won that game, would any one see it as that significant?
Beano Cook (3:53 PM)
Boise State had something to prove to many people, and that is the difference.
Joe (Port Chester, NY)
Do you think voters will be affected by the Cam Newton situation if they think there was cheating involved?
Beano Cook (3:54 PM)
Maybe. Coaches may feel upset about this situation.
Chad (Las Vegas)
What's this weeks pick? You're 5-5 and would get no love, or comps, in Vegas with picks like that.
Beano Cook (3:56 PM)
I agree with you, I know that. So I am trying to go above .500. Utah is at Notre Dame on Saturday and I am picking Notre Dame 28, Utah 24. The Irish are an underdog by about a touchdown. Thanks for your questions, see you next week.
