Chris Sheridan (1:59 PM)
Greetings from New York, where Rony Turiaf may be the only thing that can save the Knicks right now. Not quite how they envisioned things, eh? We're spanning the entire NBA universe today, looking to touch on as many items and teams as possible. So onward we go ...
Why do NBA writers say the Spurs are too old to win when Lakers and Celtics both have more players over 30?
Chris Sheridan (2:02 PM)
Well, for one thing Tim Duncan has been playing like an old man for the past week, looking well, well past his prime. But their strong start as taught those paying attention that they are sneaky deep, more so than they've been in years. Like several teams out West, I think they could giv the Lakers a battle in a seven-game series but would not emerge victorious. I still maintain the Scola trade doomed to for a half-decade of being a top tier team, but not an elite one.
Aren't the C's a little too proud to be walking out of Miami with a win... not too often Ray Allen is going to hit 7 3's
Chris Sheridan (2:04 PM)
How can you fault them for taking pride in that win. They are 2-0 against the team everyone spent the summer focusing on, and they look as though they have an axe to grind -- especially Rondo after being the last cut for Team USA,
Hey Chris, How much of an impact do you think Delonte West will have on the Celtics bench? I think he could end up being the "steal" of the season. Thanks.
Chris Sheridan (2:06 PM)
Put it this way: Exactly one year ago, the Celtics were insistent that Maquis Daniels would suffice as the backup PG. Now they have Nate Robinson and are about to add Delonte West, and they've added Semih and the two O'Neals to the center spot. This is the deepest they've been, by far, since KG and Ray Allen arrived.
William (Baton Rouge, LA)
The Hornets seem to be winning games via defense. Will they be able to sustain the defensive intensity over the full 82?
Chris Sheridan (2:07 PM)
Next two games against Dallas will be a good measuring stick moment for them. If they emerge 10-0, they've become the best story of the first three weeks of the season.
What's wrong with the Knicks' offense? Is it the P&R? Amare Isos? Gallo's shooting? What's going on?
Chris Sheridan (2:09 PM)
All of the above, but more so than anything the defenses are collapsing on Amare, forcing him to go to his left and making him put the ball on the floor. They are not shooting 3s well the past five games, and that is making the focus on stopping Amare all the more potent.
Chris Sheridan (2:11 PM)
BTW, for chapter and verse on the Knicks woes, I am doing a Knicks-only chat every Friday at 2 p.m. EST on the ESPNNewYork site. I'll be with them in Denver tomorrow night and am curious to see how flirtatious 'Melo wants to get when discussing NY. Check for news on that in the Wednesday Daily Dime.
Rhonda (Clifton Park, NY)
Realistically, how many losses before D'Antoni is fireable? And if fired, who do they turn to? Mark Jackson a possibility?
Chris Sheridan (2:13 PM)
A 10-game losing streak puts him in jeopardy. Nothing short of 10, though. Dolan still sees this as the infancy of Year 3 of the 4-Year plan Donnie Walsh sold him on. I would not look for J.D. to show any impatience.
What's the issue with Kevin Love's erratic play time in Minnesota?
Chris Sheridan (2:16 PM)
It's been an issue for more than two years and it was an issue, too, on Team USA this summer when K.Love was averaging a rebound per minute but couldn't get any consistent burn. I have no suitable explanaton other than he had been caught playing behind Al Jefferson the past two years, and sometimes Beasley this season. If he had Wilson Chandler defending him every night, he'd be Wilt Chamberlain.
Jesse (SLC UT)
Hey Chris, a quick question. What positives and negatives do you see from the Jazz moving forward this season compared to previous years with Booze/Korver/etc?
Chris Sheridan (2:18 PM)
They changed on the fly without taking a dip, which is what can happen when you have a player like Millsap waiting in the wings behind Boozer, and when you get Al Jefferson for nothing. Can't say enough about the perseverance they showed though that four-game in five nights Eastern swing.
Kaufman (Depends, FL)
What are the odds Bosh gets traded? I know it's early, so I'm saying in a couple months if they are still struggling. He just doesn't seem like he fits and he doesn't appear happy at all.
Chris Sheridan (2:20 PM)
99-1. Folks got to give that team some time to settle in. It's mid-November.
Is it me or did the Cavs have a better supporting cast all these years for LeBron than they got credit for? They could legitimately win 35 games this season whereas everyone wrote them off as a 15 win squad without LBJ
Chris Sheridan (2:22 PM)
Certain guys have stepped up their games, Daniel Gibson most notably, with 25 shots per night now being shared. With the way the East is, 35 wins might get an 8 seed.
Rich (Sacramento, CA)
What are the chances that, in two years, the Kings franchise - whatever city they're in - are in the midst of yet another "rebuilding" project?
Chris Sheridan (2:24 PM)
100 percent. Better qustion: are they in Kansas City again, or San Jose? Or St. Louis?
Josh (Milwaukee, WI)
The Bucks are finally playing at their potential. If they continue to play tough "D" and BJ and Bogut keep their shooting percentage up, do you think they could get that fourth spot in the east and have home court in the playoffs, then mabey even win a playoff series?
Chris Sheridan (2:27 PM)
Glitch there. Answer didn't post. In a nutshell: Ilyasova's weak start to season looks like an aberation, defensive eficiency is No. 2 in NBA, and I'm still confident in my preseason pick of the Bucks as East's No. 4 seed.
Are B-Roy's better years behind him? He sounds like an old man already.
Chris Sheridan (2:29 PM)
There is only so much bone-on-bone irritation a player's knee can take, so it would seem at a certain point he is going to have to consider microfracture surgery.
Ridiculous Technicals (Staples Center)
Lamar Odom gets one for complaining. One play later Josh Childress complains and throws his hands in the air but does not get one. What's the difference? Just the degree of demonstration? Such a slippery slope with emotion - when are the refs gonna let up on this? It's killing the game this year
Chris Sheridan (2:33 PM)
It is mindboggling to me that the NBA instituted this zero tolerance rule after so many continuous years of focus on the refs, from blown calls to expanded replay rules to the Donaghy fiasco. They should be doing everything they can to make these guys likeable, yet they have instituted a rule that refs are applying quite unevenly, which is infuriating the hard-core fans. It's stupid, and I just don't get it.
Suns need a big man, Kings want to get of jason thompson. Why havent these two teams talked? Earl Clark + 2nd pick for Thompson?
Chris Sheridan (2:34 PM)
Kings would want someone the caliber of Robin Lopez if they did that deal, but they don't really need a Lopez type with Dalembert and Cousins in the middle.
Travis (SLC Utah)
Besides the lakers who else are the other top 3 teams in the west?
Chris Sheridan (2:37 PM)
Stein does the power rankings around here, but I'll answer your question. My top 4 right now, in order, are LAL, Utah, NO, SA. Western team I am most down on: OKC.
Any of chance of Nash to NY at the deadline? Who would the Knicks have to give up?
Chris Sheridan (2:41 PM)
When Knicks traded 2012 pick for McGrady, they took themselves out of the loop for a lot of possible deals. Their best-case scenario is being a .500 team this yar, then getting Carmelo as a free agent without surrendering anything. That could leave them with enough pieces to put togther in a Nash deal (Gallinari, Felton, Chandler) over the summer.
Alex (Denver, CO)
It seems Melo has softened a bit in his trade demand now that the team is playing well and the front office situation is being clarified. With how good the Nuggets they have been playing (excepting the Indiana game) with some of the new additions (Harrington, Williams, Forbes) what do you think the teams prospects or ceiling might be once Anderson and Kmart return to the lineup?
Chris Sheridan (2:43 PM)
Their ceiling has always been high, and this year's success is one of the thing they are banking on in their hopes that Carmelo changes his mind and signs that extension. But I haven't seen his soften his public statements, only more of the same "I'm keeping my options open" talk. I'll have a btter reading after speaking to him myself tomorrow night in Denver.
What can the Sixers get for AI9?
Chris Sheridan (2:46 PM)
I continue to believe that the trade that makes sense for them if they strictly want a salary dump is to OKC for Collison and MoP's expiring contracts along with Jeff Green and a No. 1.
If the knick fired D'Antoni who do u see as possible replacements?
Chris Sheridan (2:48 PM)
If the Knicks fired D'Antoni before March, I would see it as a clear sign that the are not picking up Donnie Walsh's fourth year option, which comes up in March. The guy who would serve out the season would be Herb Williams. But again, I think it would take a 10-game losing streak at a minimum to put Mike D in jeopardy.
Melo's gone....don't sugarcoat it. He would have signed if he were staying. Same as D-Will...he's gone too when his extension comes up. Small markets can't keep big-time players?
Chris Sheridan (2:51 PM)
Disagree on Deron, and on your larger point. Pacers kept Reggie Miller for his entire career, didn't they? Depends on the player and his personality. Every case if different. Durant is staying in OKC, so there's another example to debunk your theory.
Is Melo really willing to go to NJ or was DEN trying to get other teams to up the ante? It seems to me DEN would have just dealt with NJ directly if he were really willing to go there. And whats up with Brook?
Chris Sheridan (2:54 PM)
There was a point whre 'Melo was ready to sign off on going to Jersey and being the centerpiece of the move to Brooklyn. Wouldn't surprise me if Jay-Z himself sold Melo on the idea. Not so sure he'd sign off on it now. And Brook? He is learning that life under Avery is not like it was under L.Frank. Avery goes through that with all his players.
How is Deng, Gibson and picks (Including Charlotte's) not enough for Melo? He will only accept trades to Chicago and NY.....he wont sign extension with NJ and they dont want NY's players....what will they decide if Denver struggles in the 1st half?
Chris Sheridan (2:55 PM)
Could end up being enough if that's the best deal on the table at trade deadline and Denver is resigned to moving him. But if Carmelo is dead set on playing in NY next year, the Bulls won't do that deal.
Are the Bulls the 3rd best in the East barring any deals when Boozer returns because they look pretty good without his 20 and 8?
Chris Sheridan (2:58 PM)
They could end up right there with Orlando, behind Boston and Miami, but I still am a bigger long-term believer in the team 90 miles up the road, the Bucks, than I am in the Bulls. Pity that first Chi-Mil game isn't until after Christmas.
Chris, what are your thoughts on the recent power rankings.
Chris Sheridan (3:00 PM)
Stein Line HQ seems a little down on the Wiz, eh?
Chris Sheridan (3:01 PM)
That's a wrap, folks. Off to Denver now, will speak to Melo tomorrow and get my first upclose look at the FreeBird tattoo. See y'all back here in a week.
