Chris Low (1:02 PM)
Hello. Hard to believe only two weeks remain in the regular season.
Hank (Myrtle Beach)
If the Gamecocks win out with Lattimore turning in solid performances in each of the next three games, does he get invited to New York?
Chris Low (1:05 PM)
I would think he would have a shot with what he's meant to that team. Actually, he and Alshon Jeffery could end up taking votes away from each other. Jeffery has also had a huge impact on South Carolina has been able to do. Still, I think Lattimore would need some big, big games down the stretch and would then have to to really blow it out in a win over Auburn to make it to New York.
OK, with all the stories going around the Cam Newton saga what are the chances we will have any closure prior to the end of the regualr season?
Chris Low (1:09 PM)
I think that is everybody's goal, to have some resolution prior to the Iron Bowl and certainly prior to the SEC championship game. The NCAA continues to talk with people concerning the matter, and it's hard to say how long this probe will last. The bottom line is that Auburn has made an institutional decision to play Newton. To this point, there are no allegations linking Auburn to any kind of solicitation of money or any improprieties involving the recruitment of Newton.
What's your take on how soon there will be a resolution on the Cam Newton Play For Pay scandal. As this onion peels back, it's beginning to smell more and more. I'm not one quick to judge, but it's not looking good for Chizik, Auburn, or the Newtons.
Chris Low (1:12 PM)
Again, I think there will be some type of resolution prior to the Iron Bowl. Yes, there are a lot of allegations out there. As SEC commissioner Mike Slive said, let's wait and see what all shakes out before any judgments are made.
I'm curious why you think that a 3 loss (maybe more than that by the end of the year) SC team in the SEC championship game is "good" for the conference, but if the same thing happens in the ACC, it's not good, and only highlights the mediocrity of the conference.
Chris Low (1:13 PM)
I disagree. I think it highlights that this is not just a two-team league. Sure, the East was down this season, but part of that is because the West was so strong.
D Holmes (Killen, AL)
Hi Chris...you are obviously very well connected in the SEC...so I ask you...to your knowledge...has anyone produced a proven factual allegation that would render Cam Newton ineligible for the remainder of the year, or that would threaten Auburn University with any type of NCAA rule violation?
Chris Low (1:19 PM)
If Auburn had what it felt was hard-core evidence that Newton had taken money or anybody in his family had taken money, there's no doubt in my mind that Newton would be sitting out right now. Unfortunately, I don't think it's that simple. At the crux of what's been alleged to this point, that Newton's father tried to solicit money for his son to sign with Mississippi State, is the interpretation of whether or not that jeopardizes Newton's eligibility if he was unaware of the scam. According to the NCAA, it is a violation, though, if anybody on an athlete's behalf solicits money in turn for that athlete to sign with a certain school.
Samantha (Dothan, AL)
Hi Chris. Thanks for looking at my question. Chris do you not find it at all suspicious that the ONLY school or people that claim Cecil Newton sought money is from MSU and that they admit they continued to recruit him even if they knew if would be ineligible if their accusations are true? I mean, Auburn, Oklahoma, Tenn., all said they were never approached with any of this. Why does everyone just believe MSU? Thanks
Chris Low (1:24 PM)
Honestly, the whole thing is strange. The reason it's coming out about Mississippi State is that a former Mississippi State player (Kenny Rogers) is the one who said he was representing the Newton family and Cecil Newton in this whole deal and Rogers contacted several former teammates of his to inquire about the money.
Can the NCAA punish Cam Newton for the actions of his father if he didnt know what was happening?
Chris Low (1:26 PM)
Technically, yes. However, if Cam Newton didn't know any of this and was totally innocent and it was purely a case of his father trying to shop him to a school, then I would hope that would be enough of a mitigating circumstance that would allow him to continue playing.
Chad (Las Vegas)
I just welcomed the next great LSU Tiger fan into the world last night so please answer this for me. I know the NCAA doesn't work that fast but what if they do find Cam ineligible before the SEC Champ game? Does the LSU/Ark winner then get the shot at that game?
Chris Low (1:31 PM)
If for some reason the SEC deemed a team ineligible to play in the SEC championship game, the team finishing second in the division would go. So in your scenario, it would get down to the tiebreaker between Alabama, Arkansas and LSU. That said, I don't envision a scenario where Auburn would be kept from playing in the SEC championship game this season.
Hey Chris-I'll give you a break from the Cam Newton questions...Mine's simple....Give me a Auburn/Bama prediction (assuming #2 suits up)!
Chris Low (1:34 PM)
With the way Newton has responded on the field like a champ through all this, it's hard to pick against him. But with the game in Tuscaloosa (Auburn's first really tough game away from home this season) and the Tide's ability to stretch the field with the passing game, my early feel is that Alabama will win. I also wouldn't be surprised if Alabama is favored by a point or two in the game.
Hi Chris, I really wish we could get back to the good ole days of talking football. But we have this huge story that has really taken on a life of it's own. Do you think this will give the SEC a blackeye regardless of the outcome?
Chris Low (1:34 PM)
Stephen ( Knoxville)
Chris, with Tyler Bray leading the offense now do you think the Vols can win out and go bowling?
Chris Low (1:36 PM)
Yes, I believe Tennessee will win its next two games and go to the Music City Bowl.
Jeff (Pine Bluff Ar)
What's your Prediction on the Arkansas Mississippi State Game?
Chris Low (1:47 PM)
I think the Hogs will pull away in the second half. I just don't see Mississippi State being able to score enough points to win this game. Plus, Arkansas' defense is playing a lot better this season.
Non-Cam Newton Q: Is it your belief that Addazio should be fired if the Gators wanna turn it around next year?
Chris Low (1:49 PM)
I'm not going to pin it all on Addazio because it's Urban Meyer's offense. I think the Gators were stubborn this season trying to run the same offense they did with Tebow and do it with a drop-back passer, John Brantley, at quarterback.
True or False- Richt needs to win 9 games next year to keep his job.
Chris Low (1:51 PM)
I would say nine would be a safe number for him. Anything less would mean three pretty average seasons in a row and would at least open up the possibility that Georgia might make a change. I don't see any way they make a change this season.
webb (gadsden, al)
Why in the world would Cam "not knowing" about the pay to play plan matter? The solicitation is the NCAA infraction.....what? will Cecil have to sit 6 games?
Chris Low (1:52 PM)
It could be a factor if we got to a point where Newton was ruled ineligible and then Auburn was seeking to have him reinstated.
Heisman, best player on the field. As a sports analyst how do you feel about all the closed minded reporters/analyst/media that are smearing a kid who to everyone's knowledge has not done anything wrong?
Chris Low (1:55 PM)
I'm not going to pass judgment on anybody else in my profession. But I'm a Heisman voter, and as long as Newton is eligible and playing, I'm going to vote for him. He's clearly the best player and most valuable player in the country this season. If there are other developments that come forward and/or the NCAA or SEC takes action, I reserve the right to change my mind.
Jake (Kauai, HI)
Chris, what do you think the odds are on Cam going to the NFL? Does all the controversy surrounding him make his decision for him or was his performance on the field going to lead him in that direction anyway?
Chris Low (1:56 PM)
I felt like even before all this stuff heated up with the NCAA investigation that he would be a one-and-done guy. He's been out of high school now for four years, and I just feel like he wants to go ahead and take his shot at pro ball.
I apologize in advance for a Cam question but I'd really like an answer.Several of these Newton articles don't show who wrote them and several have multiple writers, yourself included. It almost seems as if one person doesn't want their name on it alone. Why does it take 3 bloggers to write an article that consists mostly of material that has already been written?
Chris Low (1:59 PM)
Everything that has been reported by ESPN.com has a byline on it. Some of the stories have multiple bylines because several people contributed in the reporting of that story.
Jeff F (Baton Rouge, LA)
Is there any shot whatsoever of Houston Nutt knocking off LSU 4 years in a row this Saturday?
Chris Low (2:00 PM)
Put it this way: If he does, it would the most unlikely of all his wins, even more so than an unranked Arkansas team knocking off No. 1 LSU in 2007.
Do you think Florida's gonna choke and lose to App State Saturday?
Chris Low (2:04 PM)
Ummm .... no
Jeff F (Baton Rouge, LA)
I know you regret not picking Spurrier this past week when a championship was on the line, but are you going to make that same mistake when they take on Auburn for the whole shebang?
Chris Low (2:05 PM)
I don't know. I have some time to think about it. How's that for a cop-out?
Chris Low (2:07 PM)
Hey, thanks for the questions. I know a lot of people want to know what's going to happen with Newton. The truth is that nobody knows for sure at this point, and I'm not going to speculate. Hope everybody has a great week!
